Phoronix IRC Log: 2010-08-11

cowoods: Hi. I have an xrandr question. Please let me know if this it the wrong channel. I have Fedora 13 install on a laptop with a montior plugged in. By default the LVDS and VGA are shown left right or each other on the same desktop. However the usability is not very good as the LVDS is the primary interface and everything needs to be specifically dragged over to the VGA. Is it possible to use xrandr to configure LVDS and VGA to be different desktops?
mikeplus64: cowoods: If you're using Fedora then I think you want to be in #fedora for your problem.
cowoods: ok. will try that. Thanks.
Flyser: wonders why phoronix didn't report about the release of 2.6.35-ck1 ...
Flyser: michaellarabel: ↑ ?
Samuel-NotAFK: Flyser: What does ck1 mean?
Flyser: con kolivas
Flyser: a kernel patchset which improves responsiveness on desktop systems
Samuel-NotAFK: Flyser: Isn't he some cunt who wants to reduce Linux's performance?
Flyser: what?!
Samuel-NotAFK: Flyser: Yeah, at the expense of performance on every other system.
Flyser: uhm. do you have any proof for your statements?
Samuel-NotAFK: Flyser: No, just lots of FUD.
Flyser: well. some patches might decrease performance on many CPU systems, but many of them just add Kconfig options
Flyser: so users of such large systems dont have to enable his patches
Ivanovic: cowoods: uhm, what you want sounds like some zaphod config, two seperate X11 sessions, one per each display attached
Ivanovic: not what xrandr wants to provide (some merged, enlarged desktop that spans over several screens or a desktop that is mirrored)
cowoods: The best solution I have found so far is to disable the LVDS and just use the VGA1 only. The other option is to clone, but that has the downside of lower res on the VGA.
Ivanovic: i don't think that there is some way to have different "virtual workspaces" of your DE on different displays (as in "workspace 2" mapped to display 2)
RambJoe: are they releasing physx on linux?
Tigge: seems like it
Tigge: Also: "There's also more gaming-related news to be announced shortly, but if you follow us on the various social networks, you should already know there's announcements pending."
Tigge: Steam? :)
RambJoe: :D
RambJoe: hm i might buy an nvidia card
RambJoe: my ati card was getting pink and green dots all over the screen
RambJoe: so im getting a refund :D
RambJoe: i think someone should make something like steam for linux
RambJoe: if valve aren't going to
Tigge: As of 10.7, my ATI is actually approaching decent in Linux
Tigge: just bugs out on flash.. might be something else though
RambJoe: what is nvidia like
Tigge: Better
RambJoe: doe the 470s support opengl 4?
RambJoe: oh gawd then i'll be able to play steam games in wine
Tigge: I could even play Starcraft II with my ATI card with wine.
RambJoe: is this because of the new drivers?
Tigge: I think so yes
Tigge: at least in some part
RambJoe: oh
RambJoe: a few months ago
Tigge: I would still go for Nvidia though
RambJoe: i couldn't even play cs 1.6
Tigge: ahh
Gnurdux: blarg, #ubuntu is actually too crowded
Gnurdux: so the question i just asked there, which is relevant to Linux graphics drivers: So, I'm using the fglrx driver and I'm getting graphical glitches in Thunderbird. It's like some surfaces aren't repainting when they are supposed to be, for example when you unminimize thunderbird there are sometimes grey/black boxes that, if they are buttons, go away when you hover over them (forcing them to repaint)
maligor: yep
maligor: aticonfig --set-pcs-str=DDX,Direct2DAccel,FALSE
maligor: will probably fix it
maligor: you'll need to restart X11 after it
maligor: Gnurdux, ping
Gnurdux: pong
Gnurdux: thanks
Gnurdux: maligor, so what is the cause, and why isn't that the default?
Gnurdux: is thunderbird doing something questionable?
maligor: all mozilla apps are infected with it
maligor: not a clue what causes it
Gnurdux: i havent had the issue in firefox
maligor: I just don't use any
RambJoe: its the new 2d acceleration engine on the new ati drivers
Gnurdux: does your fix have any performance issues?
Gnurdux: oh, i see
Gnurdux: it's disabling 2d acceleration
maligor: might have
maligor: no
RambJoe: it came out like 2 months ago or something
Gnurdux: it's disabling some 2d acceleration
Gnurdux: it sounds to me like XUL is just not handling some kind of event that shoudl force it to repaint
RambJoe: do you use compiz?
Gnurdux: disabled
Gnurdux: lemme try that fix
Gnurdux: brb
Gnurdux: hmm, maybe X didn't restart, but problem isn't gone
Gnurdux: do i actually need to restart gdm, is logging off not enough?
Gnurdux: eh whatever, i'll try that
Gnurdux: nope, problem is definitely not gone
Gnurdux: aha, i got it using ForceXAA
Gnurdux: that's one problem down
Gnurdux: now i just need to get certificates working in Chrome(ium)
Gnurdux: or switch to firefox i guess :(
Gnurdux: oh, one more issue (this is less relevant for phoronix, but someone might know it all the same) -- i'm using a laptop, and I have a mouse hooked up to it. sometimes, the mouse won't click, and then i have to click with the touchpad, after which the mouse will be able to click again
s_20: "There's also more gaming-related news to be announced shortly, but if you follow us on the various social networks, you should already know there's announcements pending." what is this mysterious statement supposed to mean?
monreal_: s_20: source?
monreal_: not as in "source engine" btw :)
Daekdroom: That looks like follow-bait to me
s_20: i think it was the phoronix article on physX
monreal_: yes... but nothing special on twitter etc during the last days
Gnurdux: he wants to make it sound like steam, when it's something about like LGP most likely
Gnurdux: also, "shortly" could mean in 1,000 years
Gnurdux: doesn't approve of this tantalization thing
Nevtus: I'm getting sick of this endless Steam farce
s_20: Nevtus: now already.....?
Gnurdux: well, to be fair, michaellarabel hasn't mentioned it for a while
Gnurdux: he just never retracted his earlier statements
Gnurdux: imo it was irresponsible to make statements like that theat he couldn't back up
Gnurdux: and without concrete information that could be verified
riisen: steam ?
Nevtus: what else
riisen: oh nvm..
Gnurdux: although
Gnurdux: actually
Gnurdux: wasn't steam supposed to come "shortly" at some point?
Gnurdux: or was it merely "imminent"
Gnurdux: if it was supposed to come shortly, I should point out that "more gaming-related news to be announced shortly" means a wait of a few months, since this is way after he said that about steam
riisen: they only said "will hopefully come this summer" .. what i saw
riisen: but i did almost only read the phoronix and its "source" :P
Gnurdux: well, i guess there is still some time left in summer
riisen: yea..
Gnurdux: but
Gnurdux: i find it fairly difficult to believe
Gnurdux: you know what would suck?
Gnurdux: steam but not source
riisen: but the good news is they still recruit "Port Windows-based games to the Linux platform."
riisen: Gnurdux, yea
Gnurdux: riisen, and that might still mean dedicated servers
riisen: to port windows-based games ?
riisen: cuz just port the server they shouldnt really need so much.. what in a server does use any directx or stuff that can be a bitch to port ? :P
monreal_: i wish someone at LGP would fix their games to actually run :/
monreal_: I bought jetsnguns and both shadowgrounds games. jets segfaults on start and the other two run, but only without sound
riisen: =/
riisen: that sux
monreal_: what really sucks is that they don't even respond to bug reports
riisen: :O
riisen: really ?
monreal_: riisen: yeah
monreal_: still waiting for my support reply from.... april 5 :/
djura-san: o/
meklu: monreal_: don't forget about valve-time
meklu: ^ whooops
monreal_: meklu: LGP working on valve time as well? :)
meklu: perhaps :)
meklu: i forgot about the lgp part of this discussion :P
monreal_: the difference is, valve delivers solid stuff and generally supports its games very well... but LGP sells sh*t (for overly high prices!) and does not support at all :/
meklu: yeah
meklu: LGP is pretty much a mess nowadays from what I've heard.
monreal_: really a shame
meklu: indeed
monreal_: they could at least send out a mail to open support requests saying that they don't have the capacity atm or something like that
monreal_: or post a blog entry
monreal_: anything...
meklu: perhaps they don't have enough capacity for that either ;)
meklu: weren't they working on some new titles though?
monreal_: no idea... I won't buy from them again
christian_lappy: michaellarabel: what do you mean eith..following ud on various social networks.. ?
christian_lappy: meklu: looks like
christian_lappy: meklu: some games they can't announce yet or something that way
meklu: if their support is of the level monreal_ claimed, I doubt they'll be able to sell much (unless it's/they're (a) AAA title(s))
meklu: ^ awful brackets there
monreal_: meklu: they have some games in "beta" for like 5 years
meklu: is bandits: phoenix rising still in beta, btw
monreal_: yes
Hertta: No one has touched the source code for years, I bet
meklu: ?
meklu: Hertta: any clarification
monreal_: it's better to buy the windows games for 10% of the price and live with wine
meklu: not with my ATI
Hertta: meklu: Actually no. Just a random thought.
meklu: Hertta: I should rephrase that
meklu: Hertta: Which project were you talking about?
monreal_: bandits
meklu: mkay
mesula: Any Steam users here that want to help me with something?
meklu: If having an account counts, yes.
mesula: meklu: Hi.
mesula: meklu: I'm in a right pickle.
mesula: meklu: I want to buy Nation Red because it's 50% in price 'til tomorrow.
mesula: meklu: However, I don't have enough money in my bank account and don't want to pay an overdraft fee.
mesula: meklu: Lloyds TSB banking websites says that as long as I deposit more money by 15:30 the day I go overdrawn, they won't charge me for going overdrawn.
mesula: meklu: However, the price reduction for Nation Red will go some time tomorrow.
meklu: mesula: I'm afraid I can't help you with that, sorry :(
mesula: meklu: So I need to go overdrawn after 00:00
mesula: meklu: I haven't gotten to the question yet.
meklu: mesula: Okay
mesula: meklu: What time of day do Steam deals end?
meklu: mesula: Don't know.
mesula: The offer says it's -50% in price until Thursday but is that US time?
mesula: meklu: I thought you said you used Steam?
meklu: mesula: Well, in WINE a bit.
meklu: It might be UTC though, which would be later.
meklu: Or it's dependant on your timezone.
mesula: meklu: I'm happy as long as I have five minutes after 00:00 GMT to make my order.
mesula: meklu: I wish I sorted out my student account now and my planned overdraft.
meklu: mesula: Well it says through Thursday to me. That's odd.
mesula: WTF if they don't agree to give me an unplanned overdraft tonight they'll charge me £20 whereas if they do agree they'll charge me £6 a month unless I deposit money into my account before 15:30.
mesula: meklu: That means until Thursday.
mesula: meklu: "To celebrate the new update, Nation Red is now on sale until Thursday, August 12th, 2010." http://store.steampowered.com/news/
mesula: meklu: I thought "through Thursday" meant until Friday. Damn Valve and they poor choice of wording.
mesula: FFS I guess I won't be buying the game unless I deposit money into my account tomorrow THEN buy the game (if it's still at a reduced price).
meklu: mesula: It said "through" in Steam though. Wish you luck in the purchase.
mesula: meklu: What does "through" mean exactly in this context?
meklu: I guess (if my comprehension of English is somewhat correct), it should be available for the rest of tomorrow.
mesula: meklu: That's what I thought!
mesula: meklu: But they contradict themselves elsewhere on the site.
mesula: meklu: Or maybe they mean until late on Thursday.
meklu: ...and if they don't sell you it at the discount price, you can always sue them. Bwehahahahaa!
meklu: At least here in Finland it says through Thursday. Assuming you live in the UK it should be sold half-price over there.
meklu: I mean for the rest of tomorrow.
mesula: meklu: Look on the Steam News page.
meklu: Pretty odd their news section thing.
meklu: section thing entry*.
mesula: meklu: Do they not say "until Thursday" on the news page?
meklu: They do.
meklu: "To celebrate the new update, Nation Red is now on sale until Thursday, August 12th, 2010."
mesula: meklu: Which would mean it won't be half price when I get the chance to order it.
meklu: That is odd. But the front page says "through".
meklu: I suggest you click the button a second after midnight.
meklu: Sounds crazy but might work.
mesula: meklu: I think going overdrawn might be a bit risky; I don't know if I'll be charged for it or not.
meklu: Yeah. Perhaps you should go camping in front of your bank :P
mesula: FFS this is the second time I've wanted to deposit cash into my bank account at night.
mesula: meklu: The annoying thing is I need to stay home tomorrow because I'm expected a parcel to fix my gaming PC.
mesula: meklu: It's been broken for weeks now and I'm starting to suffer from really bad withdrawal symptoms.
mesula: meklu: I really REALLY don't want to miss the delivery man.
meklu: mesula: Understood.
meklu: Could you get a "loan" from someone you know so that you could stay home and pay them back later?
mesula: meklu: That would only work if they let me borrow their debit card tonight.
mesula: meklu: The problem isn't that I don't have money, it's that my money isn't in my bank account.
meklu: mesula: Well, it's worth a try. Ish.
mesula: meklu: I'm going to meet with two of my friends in a minute.
mesula: I'll ask them if I can borrow their debit card and pay them in cash for doing it.
meklu: Sounds like a valid idea.
mesula: meklu: Laters. xxxx
meklu: mesula: Laters.
dandel: michaellarabel, look at the following test results: defaultuser-9761-32450-30266
dandel: that's showing the bug i put on the forum.
sdfgh: Is FGLRX good enough to recommend yet?
dandel: sdfgh, yes, but it still has bugs from time to time.
sdfgh: dandel: Is it good for gaming?
dandel: Yes, but not all programs are perfected tho.
sdfgh: dandel: I remember FGLRX used to have issues running games using Wine.
dandel: some games have problems with fglrx when ran through wine.
dandel: unreal tournament 3 being one of those.
dandel: however, source powered games run fairly well with fglrx and wine.
sdfgh: dandel: I like Source games. :)
dandel: some issues with text exists on some games (like alien swarm and left 4 dead), however wine v1.3.0 fixes performance for the most part.
Samuel-NotAFK: dandel: Yo add me on Alien Swarm.
Samuel-NotAFK: As a friend on Steam rather.,
Samuel-NotAFK: dandel: Do you have all the speedrun achievements?
dandel: no
Samuel-NotAFK: dandel: I have 6/7 but my PC caught fire whilst getting the last one. :(
dandel: ah... pc catching fire is no good
