Phoronix IRC Log: 2010-06-29
FliPPeh: God damn it
FliPPeh: Losing the wallet sure uscks
FliPPeh: Windows 8 due to 2012
FliPPeh: The apocalypse is true after all
FliPPeh: Login via webcam, user accounts in the cloud, ...
FliPPeh: I wonder what the hell they're smoking in redmond
FliPPeh: It's not even fun anymore
AdrianBroher: login via webcam?
AdrianBroher: hrm
GNU\colossus: that's awesome. I'll ask some windows users I know for A4 sized portrait photos of themselves right now.
AdrianBroher: hrm, the idea of tf2 spy face mask... amuses me.
FliPPeh: AdrianBroher: I liked it, too
FliPPeh: Everything on TF2 is nice :)
FliPPeh: has to find a new flaregun for his pyro
AdrianBroher: FliPPeh, where did you read about the features of Windows 8?
FliPPeh_: German news report
AdrianBroher: Irgendwas mit url? :)
FliPPeh_: http://www.golem.de/1006/76071.html
FliPPeh_: :)
AdrianBroher: thx
mikeplus64: Bleh; my brother is saying "And that's why Linux sucks." because I had to get WINE to run native Windows programs. :| I asked him to run native Linux binaries but he just said "I don't need to because it's basically all compiled for Windows anyway.". :[
mikeplus64: He doesn't notice how broken his logic is but oh well.
FliPPeh_: Heh.
FliPPeh_: I rather have fewer good applications than a large pool of the shit MS produces.
FliPPeh_: Why do I love console applications so much?
FliPPeh_: Irssi, Mutt, ncmpc
FliPPeh_: nethack
FliPPeh_: vim
Sleepy_Coder: Because they don't annoy the fuck out of us as much as x gui toolkit.
FliPPeh_: Well said :)
FliPPeh_: And they always look similar
FliPPeh_: Because the terminal renders all colors the same, when one changes all do change
FliPPeh_: I just fell in love with mutt after finally managing to set up a good mail retriever
djura-san: o/
FliPPeh_: \o
nyxkn: how does linux indexes the various hard disk devices? as in, how does it choose one to be sda and one to be sdb?
GNU\colossus: kernel names are assigned according to the order the devices "show up" in the system
GNU\colossus: so if your PATA controller's drivers are loaded before the drivers of your SATA controller, and you use libata for both, thedrives on the first will have lower indices than the latter
GNU\colossus: and vice versa, of course
GNU\colossus: luckily, there are other means to consistently address a blockdevice (or rather filesystem) these days than kernel-named device nodes
nyxkn: i see
nyxkn: however, i'm seeing that grub indexes them in a different order than they appear under device names
nyxkn: like, hd1 and hd2 would be sdc and sdb
FliPPeh: Yes
FliPPeh: Because grub is not linux and has different naming conventions
FliPPeh: It's independant of linux
nyxkn: hmm. grub's indexing does however correspond to port numbering on the motherboard, while linux' doesn't
FliPPeh: Yup
FliPPeh: I think this is because grub directly accesses those drives
FliPPeh: While linux waits for more stuff to load
FliPPeh: And some stuff loads earlier
nyxkn: i see
nyxkn: any way to manually affect linux' naming?
FliPPeh: I think not, but you can always use the UUIDs to access the drives regardeless of how linux calls them
FliPPeh: "blkid"
FliPPeh: run it as root and it'll list you the UUIDs of each device
nyxkn: all right
nyxkn: thanks :)
GNU\colossus: nyxkn: GRUB accesses drives in the order the BIOS provides it those devices with. the Linux kernel doesn't necessarily.
nyxkn: so linux doesn't really follow any specific ordering
nyxkn: well no, it probably does, as they're always indexed the same way
GNU\colossus: as I said, module/driver loading order dictates kernel naming order.
nyxkn: but being them all sata, shouldn't they be loaded one after another in bios' order?
GNU\colossus: you should not RELY on your drives getting named that particular way, there's no guarantee that a future kernel version or distro will name it the same way as you current config
nyxkn: i see
RambJoe: http://www.favbrowser.com/ie6-is-safer-than-chrome-or-opera/
FliPPeh: Whoo
FliPPeh: A half-featured chat server
FliPPeh: Multiple clients, account data in SQLite table
FliPPeh: It's fun to know C
RambJoe: apparently IE6 is safer than Chrome and Opera
FliPPeh: Oh yes it is
RambJoe: :|
FliPPeh: Well. It's as safe as they are.
FliPPeh: When run on linux
RambJoe: http://www.favbrowser.com/ie6-is-safer-than-chrome-or-opera/
FliPPeh: Only people who can't protect themselves need browser protection!
RambJoe: a bank stopped supporting chrome as it's not safe
FliPPeh: EVERYONE ELSE DESERVES IT!
FliPPeh: Burning sun
FliPPeh: Burning light
FliPPeh: take take take take take take it awayyy
RambJoe: http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/29/htc-expect-desire-legend-and-wildfire-to-get-froyo-beginning/
RambJoe: nice
RambJoe: beginning of Q3, that's july aka when i get my desire
FliPPeh: I'm gonna get an Eee PC in July ;x
FliPPeh: This government ist so fucked up
FliPPeh: I just played Counterstrike Source to check how it runs and noticed how they censored it
FliPPeh: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkUuABNnTC0
FliPPeh: What's up with that?
FliPPeh: Get hit in the freaking head with your blood all over the wall but just falls on your knees, calmly put your hands on the back of your head and lying down, surrendering?
FliPPeh: How is that supposed to "protect" kids?
FliPPeh: They're just going to think this is what happens in REAL LIFE
RambJoe: that's a glitch isn't it
RambJoe: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1320530
RambJoe: FliPPeh try verifying cache
FliPPeh: I doubt it's a glitch
FliPPeh: That's typical german
FliPPeh: I remember how they replaced enemies with robots in HL1
FliPPeh: And the models they did not replace had screws inside of them instead of blood
RambJoe: oh
FliPPeh: Because of some school shootings our politicans raged about FPS-games
FliPPeh: How they turn us teenagers into aggressive beings
FliPPeh: Threat to the society
FliPPeh: That's what happens when 90% of the government and 60% of the folks are over the age of 60
FliPPeh: You damn everything you don't understand
FliPPeh: And the folks like it and keep on voting and approving
FliPPeh: The computer's the devil!
FliPPeh: But the same people go and have fun in their marksmen clubs
FliPPeh: Shooting with REAL guns
RambJoe: try downloading from a UK server
FliPPeh: Nah, CS:S is not worth it
RambJoe: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1329815
RambJoe: oh
FliPPeh: BRB BBQ
RambJoe: ok
s_20: RambJoe: it doesn't make a difference, it's a different game internally, when you buy censored games in germany the actual title of the product is something like "Orange Box (DE)"
s_20: what you *can* do though is order it overseas and use the foreign cd key in germany
s_20: it's also cheaper that way..
FliPPeh: It's amazing how apple fans go "NEW IPHONE LASTS 2 DAYS WITHOUT RECHARGE WOWWWW"
christian_lappy: hehe
FliPPeh: While my phone hasn't been charged for two weeks :/
christian_lappy: lol
christian_lappy: yor phone likely wasn'tt 1k € ..hehe
FliPPeh: 98 €
FliPPeh: SE S8500i ;x
FliPPeh: S500i*
FliPPeh: I don't understand how "normal" non-business people have to buy $1000 smartphones when a normal phone does all that
christian_lappy: no idea, really
FliPPeh: My brother has an iPhone 3G
christian_lappy: i don't understand the apple hype
FliPPeh: He's got all the iconic and innovative apps on there
FliPPeh: Gun shooting
FliPPeh: Fart
FliPPeh: Boob shaking
christian_lappy: lol
FliPPeh: Apple people suffer from a severe case of stockholm syndrome
christian_lappy: lol
FliPPeh: I mean seriously
FliPPeh: Someone posted a video here yesterday...
FliPPeh: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFvD0LXYlws&feature=channel
RambJoe: that would have been me
FliPPeh: NetHack \o/
RambJoe: anyone know how to change what stuff opens in in chrome
RambJoe: when stuff downloads, i click it, then it downloads again as it opens it self in chrome lol
FliPPeh: Yep
FliPPeh: I suppose it calls "xdg-open"
FliPPeh: And xdg-open opens files by their mime types
FliPPeh: You can modify which mime is openend by which application
FliPPeh: But I don't remember how!
RambJoe: ok thanks
tkmorris: altitude is actually fun xD
FliPPeh: NOOO WEREWOLVES
FliPPeh: 2 3722 lukas-Tou-Hum-Mal-Neu died in The Dungeons of Doom on
FliPPeh: level 8. Killed by a werewolf. - [65]
tkmorris: http://altitudegame.com/
tkmorris: OS: Linux xP
FliPPeh: tkmorris: Linux support?
FliPPeh: ASJDKALJ
FliPPeh: Gotta buy
tkmorris: yay
FliPPeh: 10 USD?
tkmorris: their installer is JRE based xD
FliPPeh: That's 8 EUR for me
FliPPeh: Alcohol costs more
FliPPeh: Gonna buy it next month :)
FliPPeh: Thanks for the tip
tkmorris: you're welcome
FliPPeh: I like native linux games
FliPPeh: They're somehow cute and fun and pretty
FliPPeh: Unlike the all serious windows stuff
tkmorris: it's available through steam also
FliPPeh: But you can install it normally?
tkmorris: through steam?
tkmorris: probably not
Daekdroom: So, is there any decent eye-candy for GNOME other than conky, gdesklets, screenlets and those dockbars?
Daekdroom: I feel like cluttering my screen.
tkmorris: yes, KDE
Sir_Brizz: ^
FliPPeh: KDE is fine
FliPPeh: It's getting finer every day
ech0s7: d
Daekdroom: KDE has some horribly done menus that I'll never get used to o.o
Sir_Brizz: I haven't seen them
tkmorris: the icons in 4.5 RC1 are pretty good
Sir_Brizz: since 4.3, KDE has been really good
Sir_Brizz: 4.4 made it even better
FliPPeh: yup
Sir_Brizz: I'm waiting for the RC1 packages to come on Kubuntu
Sir_Brizz: for 4.5
Sir_Brizz: it looks nice and solid
FliPPeh: I'd go and say KDE is the fastest improving project right now
FliPPeh: probably installs KDE netbook on his.. netbook
tkmorris: netbook plasmoid xP
FliPPeh: yep
tkmorris: http://static.arstechnica.com/assets/2009/07/netbook-newspaper-thumb-640xauto-7233.png
tkmorris: I'm waiting for a Qt based smartphone
tkmorris: KMail mobile interface is shiny xD
FliPPeh: I thought there was
FliPPeh: Qt is developed by Nokia
FliPPeh: Sooo
FliPPeh: They probably have something
tkmorris: http://steveire.wordpress.com/2010/04/30/kdepim-on-mobile-whats-going-on/
tkmorris: no, n900 is maemo based, which is still GTK+
ech0s7: byez
Sir_Brizz: the thing I like baout KDE is you can basically install kdebase and you have everything you need
Sir_Brizz: then you can get stuff you want
Sir_Brizz: kde-look is so frustrating
tkmorris: lol
FliPPeh: The only thing annoying me about Qt is the "need one get all" runtime
Sir_Brizz: they have a crapload of stuff, but they don't have any versioning restrictions or anything
FliPPeh: You can't have a lightweight Qt program
FliPPeh: You always need the full runtime
tkmorris: well, ncurses is lightweight
Sir_Brizz: well it's not like Qt is as fat as, say, Mono
FliPPeh: Arrgghhh mono
FliPPeh: Whole .NET is damnation
FliPPeh: .NET wasn't meant to be portable so it shouldn't be ported
FliPPeh: It was and is announced to be portable, but that's bullshit
Daekdroom: Mono should only be used for porting from Windows, not for starting something from scratch..
Daekdroom: curses at Tomboy.
GNU\colossus: FliPPeh: so? if all your apps use it, it's quite clever to use the same runtime - even if it's _somewhat_ obese
FliPPeh: Isn't Tomboy this note program?
Daekdroom: Yeah.
tkmorris: F-spot too
tkmorris: uses mono
Daekdroom: F-spot needs it too
GNU\colossus: mono should be thrown out of the window
Daekdroom: But I think Ubuntu is replacing F-Spot.
FliPPeh: GNU\colossus: I won't allow any mono program on any system that belongs to me only a little
GNU\colossus: most distros are, yes
Daekdroom: Not sure if they'll ditch Tomboy in GNOME 3
GNU\colossus: they already did?
Daekdroom: Did they?
GNU\colossus: there's some reimplementation of tomboy, using gtk-mm
Daekdroom: Awesome..
tkmorris: GNOME is using vala now
tkmorris: http://live.gnome.org/Vala
GNU\colossus: vala, however, is interesting
tkmorris: as is shotwell
Daekdroom: Great.
FliPPeh: Okay, I can't decide people, please select a letter from the following list: abchkmprRstvw
Daekdroom: R
FliPPeh: k
FliPPeh: hego?
Daekdroom: It definitely drew attention because it was the only letter in upper case..
FliPPeh: ;D
FliPPeh: h, e, g or o?
Daekdroom: e
FliPPeh: m f
Daekdroom: m
GNU\colossus: f
FliPPeh: Thanks :)
Daekdroom: No u
GNU\colossus: dammit dammit dmamit!
FliPPeh: Male elven Ranger
tkmorris: .NET: http://www.walyou.com/blog/2010/06/27/java-4-ever-geek-movie/
Daekdroom: FliPPeh, really? O.o
GNU\colossus: but rangers need such high wisdom and charisma!
FliPPeh: Daekdroom: Yup
Daekdroom: still plays AD&D with some twisted and changed rules.
FliPPeh: Nah, this is NetHack
Daekdroom: I haf a drooid :D
Daekdroom: NetHack, what is that?
FliPPeh: http://www2.cs.uidaho.edu/~jeffery/courses/428/nethack.gif
FliPPeh: A 1985 game :)
Daekdroom: O.O
Daekdroom: Good lord.
FliPPeh: It's fun, really
adrian_broher: needs moar 3d
adrian_broher: :P
FliPPeh: When you don't focus on graphics and pay attention to story...
FliPPeh: fun
Daekdroom: Needs a ASCII-less GUI o.o
FliPPeh: That's what makes it fun!
GNU\colossus: Daekdroom: there are several
Daekdroom: Because the lack of graphics drive me nuts :(
FliPPeh: Also, there ARE 3D guis for it
tkmorris: I play xjump while gentoo is compiling xD
FliPPeh: But I don't need em!
Daekdroom: 3D? Not cool.
FliPPeh: xjump?
FliPPeh: ;o
FliPPeh: Ah wait
FliPPeh: The icy tower clone
tkmorris: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f4/Xjump.png
FliPPeh: :)
Daekdroom: installs nethack-gnome package
FliPPeh: NOOO
tkmorris: lol
Daekdroom: Chaotic Male Monk
tkmorris: there is noegnud-nethach too
GNU\colossus: TOurist rules supreme
GNU\colossus: Tourist*
tkmorris: http://images4.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20060807114336/nethack/images/e/ed/Noegnud1.jpg
Daekdroom: I'll definitely need a gui
FliPPeh: Tourist is fun until you run out of darts
Sir_Brizz: http://basket.kde.org/
tkmorris: "Ported to Qt 4 and KDE 4", nice
Sir_Brizz: I can't find a plasmoid that wraps it though
Sir_Brizz: if I were to use a note taking app it would need to have a plasmoid
Sir_Brizz: I don't ever have free desktop space
Daekdroom: Plasmoids = gadgets for desktop?
Sir_Brizz: kind of
Sir_Brizz: plasmoids are plugins for plasma
Sir_Brizz: and plasma is pretty much the UI of the KDE desktop
Sir_Brizz: so you can stick plasmoids on your desktop, in toolbars, etc
tkmorris: you can share they online too
FliPPeh: You are a lawful dwarven Caveman.
Daekdroom: I'm wondering if I should install kubuntu-desktop metapackage and fill up my entire system with doubled functionality for the sake of it o.o
Sir_Brizz: I used to do such things
Sir_Brizz: that was back when KDE4 was brand new and not great
Daekdroom: Well, I'm going to check apt-get documentation to see if it's a mess easy to fix..
Sir_Brizz: basket sits in the tray
Sir_Brizz: so close
Daekdroom: Yay.
Daekdroom: Found a list of Kubuntu-only packages.
Daekdroom: Time for madness
tkmorris: is there a problem mentioning Paypal on steam forums?
tkmorris: xD
Sir_Brizz: should there be?
tkmorris: well, they're competitor
tkmorris: *competitors
Daekdroom: Are they?
Sir_Brizz: Paypal and Steam?
tkmorris: for me yes
Sir_Brizz: Steam is integrated with Paypal
tkmorris: very well then xD
tkmorris: now I have to rephrase my post
tkmorris: ty
tkmorris: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?p=15710452#post15710452
tkmorris: maybe it's good if we keep pushing
Daekdroom: So, how well does GTK+ integrate with KDE?
Sir_Brizz: pretty well
Daekdroom: What about PyGTK+?
Sir_Brizz: I haven't had any problems with it
tkmorris: I only have problems with wxwidgets here
tkmorris: I can't send aMule to tray, if I do I can't get it back open
FliPPeh: "You are caught in a bear trap"
FliPPeh: "You enter a leprechaun hall"
FliPPeh: Oh oh
FliPPeh: nice
FliPPeh: 50 leprechauns vs me
FliPPeh: Dead
RambJoe: anyone on firefox 4
RambJoe: wow ati need to fix this shit
RambJoe: firefox 4 doesn't really have artifacts in the actual page view
RambJoe: yet
RambJoe: take that back
dandel: RambJoe, what driver release and video card.
RambJoe: 4870
RambJoe: ati 10.6
RambJoe: its becaues of the new 2D rendering engine
dandel: i see a few artifacts on my system with notifications, however, it's not too bad, just toggle between applications.
RambJoe: what browser do you use
dandel: firefox v3.6.3
RambJoe: wonder how long till firefox 4 is in the repos
dandel: although, are you on a 32 bit or 64 bit kernel.
RambJoe: you know if the 10.6s fix resizing windows in compiz?
RambJoe: 64
dandel: i have compiz disabled
RambJoe: oh
dandel: one sec, enabling compiz.
dandel: I see some tearing when i move windows around.
RambJoe: oh
RambJoe: aticonfig --set-pcs-str=DDX,ForceXAA,TRUE
RambJoe: that's how you disable it apparently
dandel: i haven't done any special configuration tweaks though.
RambJoe: oh
dandel: but i'm using an evergreen gpu tho
RambJoe: sucks i also get pink and green dots all over my screen lol
RambJoe: think my pcs overheated =/
RambJoe: whats a good program to check temperatures in linux
dandel: aticonfig has a temperature reader
dandel: first off you gotta enable overdrive: aticonfig --od-enable
RambJoe: oh yeah lol
RambJoe: thanks
dandel: oh wait, no need to enable it.
dandel: just run: sudo aticonfig -odgt
RambJoe: ok thanks
RambJoe: show how do i check
dandel: so what's the temp reading then?
RambJoe: um
RambJoe: i cant find where it says it
RambJoe: its not in amdcccle
dandel: open up the terminal and run that command.
dandel: that's how you get access to the temps
RambJoe: i did it said Using dgt
RambJoe: Saved back-up to dgt.fglrx-1
dandel: oops... forgot a -... it's aticonfig --odgt
RambJoe: Sensor 0: Temperature - 46.50 C
dandel: that means your not overheating at all 0o'.
RambJoe: maybe its my cpu
dandel: the command i use to check that is: sensors
RambJoe: lm_sensors?
dandel: yes.
RambJoe: CPU Temperature: +40.0°C (high = +65.0°C, crit = +95.0°C)
RambJoe: hmm
dandel: that's well within safety parameters for most chips
RambJoe: well im not getting dots now actually but that's probably as its night
RambJoe: i was 10 mins ago though :S
dandel: try switching to a virtual terminal and back the next time that happens.
Sir_Brizz: http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/29/twilight-eclipse-as-8-bit-youtube-video-game/
Sir_Brizz: LOL
Kano: hi michaellarabel
Kano: who has got a i5/i7?
Kano: i found an interesting problem, especially on ubuntu
Kano: the kernel is set to ondemand
FliPPeh: Sir_Brizz: I lost the game :(
Kano: but ondemand does not scale with my i5-680
Kano: conservative scales
Kano: performance is max speed
FliPPeh: VICTORIA STRIKES
dandel: Kano, i don't have an i5/i7 but i have a athlon II, and i notice similar output on my cpu also.
Kano: there is no athlon ii
Sir_Brizz: FliPPeh: lol
Sir_Brizz: I lost too
dandel: kano, wanna bet?
FliPPeh: Sir_Brizz: Now I killed Edward AND Jacod.
FliPPeh: Jacob.
FliPPeh: I love killing them. I hate twilight.
Kano: dandel: something new?
dandel: kano, Athlon II is the latest gen of athlon chips, and i have one... it's an Athlon II x4
dandel: os[Linux 2.6.32-22-generic x86_64] distro[Ubuntu "lucid" 10.04] cpu[4 x AMD Athlon(tm) II X4 630 Processor (AuthenticAMD) @ 800MHz] mem[Physical: 3.9GB, 61.2% free] disk[Total: 1.4TB, 29.4% free] video[ATI Technologies Inc Juniper [Radeon HD 5700 Series]] sound[HDA-Intel - HDA ATI SB1: HDA-Intel - HD-Audio Generic]
Sir_Brizz: hehe yes FliPPeh
Kano: dandel: maybe you need .34 kernel, when it is similar to x6
Kano: dandel: does it scale up when you compile things
dandel: i'm currently doing a bisect on the 2.6.35 kernel
dandel: stupid broken onboard keyboard.
dandel: i just wish i could fix the kpkg build
dandel: it's tacking on a "+" to everything i make
Kano: dandel: try
dandel: on demand does scale.
Kano: http://kanotix.com/files/fix/cpufreq-conservative.sh
Kano: sudo sh cpufreq-conservative.sh
Kano: if it would not scale...
dandel: conservative scales.
dandel: it hit each stage during my build of wine.
Kano: on demand scales for you too?
dandel: yes
dandel: i usually have this set to on demand.
FliPPeh: lol
dandel: but, what i see is it jumps from 800mhz to 2.8ghz when i compile
FliPPeh: Edward died of a broken heart.
dandel: one cpu maxed (configure) with on demand stays at 800mhz with an occasional jump to 2.8ghz
dandel: i don't exactly see it jumping to 1.6 and 2.1ghz very often tho.
Kano: thats normal
FliPPeh: won ^____^
Kano: conservative does not jump, it uses steps inbetween
Kano: but my cpu stays at lowest level...
dandel: might not be recognizing the cpu capabilities properly.
Daekdroom: What an absurd!
Daekdroom: Somebody just said Athlon II doesn't exist!
Kano: i dont buy lowend cpus
dandel: now if i set the program to power saver, it'll stay at 800myhz.
dandel: *800mhz
Kano: so athlon ii does not really interest me...
Daekdroom: The difference between a Athlon II X4 and same frequency Phenom II X4 is the extra L3 cache, which will give you better WinRAR performance and, who knows, 5%.
Kano: phenom x6 ok...
Daekdroom: Excuse me if I'm not rich >.>
dandel: athlon II might be lower end, however, it's important to test against the lower configurations.
Daekdroom: Well, switching to KDE
Kano: well i really hate when a fast cpu behaves like a very slow one
dandel: true enough.
dandel: i've tested my system with 720p h264 video and with cpu decoding my cpu stays at 800mhz with very few dropped frames (maybe one every 30 to 60 seconds)
Kano: well i try to use vdpau or vaapi
Kano: the vaapi results with i5 are a bit disappointing right now. no correct solution
dandel: vaap/vdpau works on my system, although the results with h264 720p on that is disappointing (screen garbage)
Kano: the code also changed, something that was a patch against 2.6.34 used differnt defines
Daekdroom: Good lord. KDE4 looks so much better than GNOME
Kano: ON_RENDER_RING / ON_BSD_RING was in the first patch
Kano: I915_EXEC_RENDER / I915_EXEC_BSD is now in libdrm 2.6.21 / kernel 2.6.35
dandel: fun 0o': xbmc/addons/AddonManager.cpp:175: undefined reference to `CStopWatch::CStopWatch()'
Kano: dandel: which gpu?
dandel: radeon hd 5770
Kano: haha
Kano: ok, i have got a 5670 too
Kano: but thats crap
Kano: get something from nvidia for vdpau
dandel: i have an 7300gs
JEEBcz: that IIRC doesn't have a VP2(+) chip
Kano: vaapi via xvba is something for ati, but that only partly works up to hd 4 series
JEEBcz: video decoding works on specialized hardware, which the card needs to have
Kano: dandel: g210 or bettter
JEEBcz: yah, a g210 would be good enough atm IIRC (VP4 n' all)
dandel: kano, if i had the funds for that, i would get one, but sadly, i don't.
Kano: dandel: thats a very cheap card
JEEBcz: anyways, if no money then you'll just have to wait :/
dandel: i'm lucky tho... i can install two video cards at once, but i won't bother because last i knew nvidia drivers didn't play well with ati drivers on linux.
JEEBcz: Too bad ATi played hurfy durfy games with video decoding for so long :V
JEEBcz: (not like it still isn't playing, but it's getting gradually better at least)
Kano: dandel: i know how to switch drivers on lucid
Kano: i wrote a script for ati
Daekdroom: JEEBcz, if you're running a UVD2-patible card..
Daekdroom: Good bye UVD1
JEEBcz: Of course
Daekdroom: Which kind doesn't make sense, but whatever, right? :P
dandel: anyways, i also have a card that lacks uvd2... radeon 3100 lol.
Kano: dandel: if you used my script or the default fglrx driver it is a thing of 5 commands
Kano: 3200 you mean is onboard
Kano: that works with uvd
dandel: can't change the onboard for that ^.^ without buying a new machine.
Kano: dandel: onboard will work
Kano: at least up to h264 l 4.1
Kano: 5.1 not
dandel: it's a RS780MC chip
JEEB: and even the L4.1 limit is so-so. I'd only feed it streams that are within the bloody BD specs
Kano: thats fine
Kano: dandel: use my script to install 10-6 driver
JEEB: (BD specs are a "tighter" set of specs within Level 4.1 and lower)
Kano: and it will work as much as possible
Kano: do not use the ati-installer directly
Kano: that wont work
Kano: http://kanotix.com/files/install-fglrx-debian.sh
Kano: DISPLAY= sudo sh install-fglrx-debian.sh -z
Kano: then reboot
Kano: and remove card ;)
Kano: or did you install 10-6 already?
Kano: you need at least 10-5 to get rid of color change problems
dandel: I already have 10.6 installled
Kano: which way
Kano: ati-installer.run pure will NOT work
dandel: buildpkg
Kano: ok
Kano: that works
Kano: then get rid of the 5770 ;)
dandel: i always use the buildpkg route.
Kano: good idea
dandel: however, i managed to royally screw up the upgrade from 10.5 to 10.6 on the laptop lol
Kano: my script adds a .34 patch but thats not that critical when you use .32 only
dandel: had to do a ton of commands to fix the left over data on it. (switched to radeon graphics for that system so i can test the latest kernels)
Kano: dandel: no
Kano: you just did not get how to do it right
Kano: you dont need to uninstall fglrx
Kano: you do
Kano: update-alternatives --config gl_conf
Kano: update-initramfs -u
Kano: ldconfig
Kano: rm -f /etc/X11/xorg.conf*
dandel: i didn't know that.
Kano: if you switch to nvidia then you would all
Kano: call
dandel: I want to run both nvidia and ati at the same time tho :(
Kano: nvidia-xconfig
dandel: just use separate displays.
Kano: if you switch to fglrx you call instead
Kano: aticonfig --initial --nobackup
Kano: basically lucid is just like gentoo
dandel: ><; that's no fun.... I actually have two pci-e2.0 16x slot on this system (that run at 8x when in dual card mode)
Kano: you always have to reboot after switch
dandel: i figured that... although, i know how to pull and remove modules without failure, and also restart the xserver on lucid so i can probably do the switch without a reboot.
Kano: if you manage to do that without ssh access let me know
Kano: well with 5770 it might work
Kano: as kms is not usedb
Kano: but as soon as kms is involved you will be out of luck
Kano: it is possible to unload those modules
dandel: i remove kms anyways.
Kano: kms does not work with your card
dandel: that's why.
Kano: at least not with .33 drm
dandel: i had to do research just to get 10.04 to install from the cd on this card, wheras 9.10 worked from the cd.
Kano: radeon.modeset=0 ?
dandel: no, i forced vesa graphics.
Kano: using which option
dandel: add the command: xforcevesa
dandel: to the boot parameters.
Kano: that still works? i thought it did nothing
dandel: ubuntu 10.04 still includes xf86-video-vesa in the drivers.
Kano: ok, but the cheat...
dandel: if you have kms and the radeonfb driver, now that causes interesting problems.
dandel: i haft to block radeon and radeonfb from loading to guarantee that the kms is not loaded at all on the laptop.
Kano: as soon as you install the fglrx package radeon is blacklisted
dandel: Kano, do you know how to make the kernel build packages build for i386 on a 64-bit machine? (dual core laptop takes too long to build)
Kano: well you could use a 32 bit chroot
dandel: 32-bit chroot?
Kano: be sure you fake 32 bit
dandel: I'm following the instructions here (and these need to be updated, apparently): https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/GitKernelBuild
Kano: dandel: linux32 is a tool to do that
Kano: after that uname -m
Kano: shows i686
Kano: when you chroot then it will be perfect
Kano: you can use debootstrap for a chroot
dandel: linux32 then the make-pkg command then right?
Kano: in a 32 bit chroot it would definitely work
dandel: ok... that helps a lot, now i can speed up the compiling a ton.
dandel: the laptop takes about 40 min each kernel building it.
bicchi: Is there a way to run a test and pass the parameters for that test as a command line option? For example, to save the results to a specified folder name and do send the results to the Phoronix Global.
