Phoronix IRC Log: 2010-06-27

mikeplus64: I don't like it how there is no details to the X server, X driver etc. on the Arch description in the 5 way benchmark...
mikeplus64: When every other distro gets the detail.
mikeplus64: The thread for it makes me cry inside.
mikeplus64: ;.;
mikeplus64: " but Arch Linux results are not available for the OpenGL tests due to problems with the system"
mikeplus64: Maybe the reason he never stated the X server is because he never installed it...
giselher: http://blog.wolfire.com/2010/06/Lugaru-comes-to-the-Amiga
mikeplus64: For Phoronix's sake I hope that Valve at the very least directly /hints/ at Steam on Linux by the end of Winter(Summer for all you people in the Northern Hemisphere :P )
mikeplus64: But I doubt it.
mikeplus64: No one has even gotten a reply to an email sent to someone at Valve, have they?
asraniel: mikeplus64: phoronix invented the story, what makes you think that valve would care about invented stories?
mikeplus64: asraniel: I don't think they care about it at all.
mikeplus64: But for the Phoronix's reputation ( which is going downhill imho ) it would be good if the "Official Confirmation" wasn't just outright lies.
asraniel: mikeplus64: ah, phoronix still has a reputation?
mikeplus64: If you look hard enough there's the occasional hardware benchmark..
asraniel: mikeplus64: yeah, that at 50% of the times get destroyed in the comments because they made stupid measures or compared stuff that can't be compared
mikeplus64: Yep
mikeplus64: On that recent 5 way distro benchmark the details about his Arch installation was very very scarce compared to the verbosity of the other distros, no details about the X server and driver etc.
mikeplus64: " but Arch Linux results are not available for the OpenGL tests due to problems with the system" makes me cry inside.
mikeplus64: Did he fail to install X or something?
asraniel: mikeplus64: my point. phoronix has no more reputation to lose. they just invent stories with no sources to get ad revenue
mikeplus64: Yep.
meGenius: mikeplus64: because arch sucks :P
mikeplus64: groans.
mikeplus64: hopes you're trolling.
meGenius: :D
mikeplus64: All distros left in their "stock configuration"
mikeplus64: The closest thing that Arch has to that is the live CD
mikeplus64: Other than that there is none.
meGenius: what is your distro, mikeplus64??
mikeplus64: meGenius: I run Arch. ;-)
meGenius: oh! damn :D
meGenius: why everybody he run either gentoo or arch??
mikeplus64: No idea.
mikeplus64: On the forums everyone seems to run Ubuntu
asraniel: kubuntu here
meGenius: is there any fedora user here??
mikeplus64: I used to run Fedora
meGenius: asraniel: at least we both use KDE :P
meGenius: mikeplus64: so??
mikeplus64: meGenius: So I'd just like to waste a few bytes of bandwidth on IRC.
meGenius: mikeplus64: i meant, what happened??
mikeplus64: Oh right
mikeplus64: lol
mikeplus64: PulseAudio happened. ;)
mikeplus64: And kept reinstalling itself after updates.
meGenius: i see!
meGenius: a lot of people faced problems with it, i didn't :)
mikeplus64: I'm sure on hardware that plays nice with PA it's wonderful but on this it's crap.
meGenius: i guess
mikeplus64: I also wanted to run something with a rolling release system
mikeplus64: I didn't want to have to download 13 and then 6 months later 14
meGenius: +1
meGenius: i hate this too
meGenius: i would prefer a one year cycle
mikeplus64: ( which was another thing I didn't like about that 5 way benchmark thing; he gave Arch a version number >:[ )
meGenius: let's hope fedora does the same ;)
mikeplus64: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Release_Lifecycle_Proposals
mikeplus64: I don't think they'll emply a rolling release cycle any time soon
mikeplus64: But that's just me.
mikeplus64: I suppose you could run rawhide though
mikeplus64: lol
meGenius: i will not
meGenius: i provide support for fedora users
meGenius: using the rawhide will confuse me ;)
mikeplus64: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qCRae5mRoRE
mikeplus64: This channel has 106 people in it and most of the time it's dead. :[
meGenius: you are right!
meGenius: will die for sometime :P
meGenius: brb...
djura-san: hai :)
mikeplus64: Hello.
Daekdroom: I wonder if I should move from pulseaudio to OSSv4 on Ubuntu..
Daekdroom: pulseaudio is working alright as of now, but it seems so hated..
monreal: fud, mostly
Daekdroom: Probably
nyxkn: i didn't go with oss because basically every application is set to work with alsa by default. using oss would mean a bit of configuring
Daekdroom: nyxkn, OSSv4 can work with ALSA API.
nyxkn: hmm
Daekdroom: But I never had any high latency issue, so I'm fine with Pulseaudio and alsa
nyxkn: wouldn't working with alsa api not take advantage of all oss capabilities?
Daekdroom: nyxkn, apparently, OSS + Alsa API still gets lower latency and better audio.
nyxkn: i see
Daekdroom: There was an article on audio on linux that I read.
Daekdroom: let me try to find it
Daekdroom: nyxkn, http://insanecoding.blogspot.com/2009/06/state-of-sound-in-linux-not-so-sorry.html
Daekdroom: But I never tried to check all those possibilities myself, in fact, I'd like if there was somebody here that could confirm or deny.
nyxkn: interesting
nyxkn: i'll maybe switch to oss and try
RambJoe: anyone know anything about bind9?
GNU\colossus: enough not to use it.
RambJoe: oh
RambJoe: whats better
tkmorris: http://www.maradns.org/ ?
RambJoe: thanks :D
tkmorris: I guess valve can't be waiting Apple for clearance for mentioning GNU/Linux
tkmorris: since PS3's got the lights now
tkmorris: maybe it's waiting for sony now xD
monreal: insert favourite steam coming on linux joke
tkmorris: I honestly hope Xbox is not the next, Valve would have to wait M$ forever
tkmorris: monreal: done
RambJoe: inb4 steam for wii
RambJoe: then steam for bsd
tkmorris: right, bsd, I hope steam comes there in GPLv3, so FreeBSD can strip it too xP
tkmorris: oh wait, it's not "open" enough
RambJoe: tbh they should release steam on an open platform like the ipad and iphone
RambJoe: wait wut
Azerthoth: tkmorris, BSD is a portable license, GPLv3 ... not so much
Azerthoth: or not at all, rather
RambJoe: http://g1.globo.com/English/noticia/2010/06/not-even-fbi-can-de-crypt-files-daniel-dantas.html
riisen: so wheres the party ;D
riisen: fest o.O?
guest000000: hi, ive got two videocards and i would like to know which is the best for linux, ati radeon 4850 or nvidia gt220
nyxkn: i was just about to press enter when he quit :(
guest000000: anyone?
Daekdroom: nyxkn,
Daekdroom: there you go
nyxkn: lol :P
nyxkn: welcome back guest000000
guest000000: thanks
nyxkn: i'd say you go for the nvidia. ati drivers for linux are in quite a bad shape
guest000000: ive already got both
nyxkn: then use then nvidia
nyxkn: the*
guest000000: ok
guest000000: how are the 256 drivers?
nyxkn: yeah, go for those
guest000000: which card do you have?
nyxkn: unfortunately, i'm stuck with an ati :P
guest000000: i used to hate it
guest000000: my 4850
guest000000: with a phenom 9950 (first gen) and they were good for gaming in windows but not much in linux, besides the power consumption of the cpu
nyxkn: ati drivers crash on me even on windows
guest000000: and now ive got an i5 750 with the 220 and i tought to switch them but it seems things havent changed much
nyxkn: on linux they do not even work, since they're not supporting latest xorg versions
guest000000: hahahah
nyxkn: yeah...
guest000000: thing is, the radeon was indeed faster to game and im not sure about 400
guest000000: nvidia 400 series
guest000000: i guess i should have waited a bit more for the 240
guest000000: i dont like g92 much
nyxkn: hmm, i believe the h4850 is superior to the gt220, yes
nyxkn: you can always try and see how it goes :)
guest000000: but you say things are just as bad eh
nyxkn: what distro are you using?
guest000000: right now none
guest000000: im about to install
guest000000: but ive used sabayon and suse mostlu
guest000000: *mostly
guest000000: i tried arch but, you know, ati...
guest000000: i guess ill install gentoo
nyxkn: i've heard nicely about sabayon. how is it?
guest000000: it actually quite fine
guest000000: its my favorite so far
nyxkn: i'll maybe have a go one day :P
guest000000: because of ati and an odd monitor (reports its 7" and DPI gets huge) i tried pretty much all i could when i was a noob
guest000000: debian, ubuntu, fedora, slackware, suse, sabayon, mint, arch
guest000000: and sabayon works great for ati
nyxkn: i see
nyxkn: well, if you plan on trying the ati, absolutely avoid fedora
guest000000: the free drivers are not there yet?
guest000000: ive read a lot about them at phoronix
nyxkn: they are, but work quite badly with my hd3400
guest000000: is the propietary still better?
nyxkn: and there's basically no way of installing the proprietary ones
guest000000: oh i see
nyxkn: fedora keeps xorg to the latest version, always one step ahead of ati developers :)
guest000000: which distro do you use?
nyxkn: i kept fedora till a few days ago, until i finally got fed up, and got on archlinux
nyxkn: which i already had on another computer anyway
nyxkn: i really like it
guest000000: but they dont support propietary ati do them?
nyxkn: they do
guest000000: thats good news
nyxkn: :)
guest000000: i liked them but by the time i used it (august 09) they were unsupported
nyxkn: hmm
nyxkn: wouldn't know
guest000000: and had to install from an untrusty repo
guest000000: which then went down
guest000000: so i quit arch hehee
nyxkn: usually AUR has basically everything one could think of
guest000000: you know, arch and sabayon are the best for me
guest000000: i like more sabayon corecd
nyxkn: it's gentoo-based, right?
guest000000: yes but binary
nyxkn: oh
nyxkn: interesting
guest000000: yep its quite similar to arch
guest000000: but more focused to their snapshots
guest000000: its a rolling release too
nyxkn: i see
guest000000: but i think arch requires more attention to the system
guest000000: you just cant upgrade blindly
guest000000: and in sabayon, well almost
nyxkn: upgrades are not a problem. it's usually just a bit of sorting out the configuration files
guest000000: well yeah
guest000000: i gues i wasnt so experienced back then
nyxkn: :P
guest000000: you ve almost convinced me to go back to arch hehehe
nyxkn: go go :D
guest000000: but i dont know, id like to try gentoo
nyxkn: yeah
nyxkn: same here
guest000000: i dont like the braches though
guest000000: stable is quite old
nyxkn: they release weekly snapshots now
nyxkn: minimal installations
nyxkn: pretty much like arch
nyxkn: or so i gathered
guest000000: sorry for leaving a whitle
guest000000: yes it seems
guest000000: but i mean the braches
guest000000: i know distrowatch is not completly accurate but
guest000000: http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=arch
guest000000: http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=gentoo
guest000000: as you can see the stable and unstable branches of gentoo are too distant
guest000000: at least for me
guest000000: nyxkn: what about frugalware?
nyxkn: no idea :P
guest000000: you saw all the above i posted?
nyxkn: mhm
guest000000: http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=arch http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=gentoo as you can see the stable and unstable branches of gentoo are too distant
guest000000: i know distrowatch is not completly accurate
nyxkn: well, i don't really know about gentoo
guest000000: there in gentoo link
guest000000: below there are the package versions
nyxkn: hmm, yes, they're a bit behind with stable, according to that
guest000000: and unstable is just too bleeding edge right?
guest000000: and sabayon is somewhere between those branches, like arch
nyxkn: i see
guest000000: well you really got me thinking about going the arch way
nyxkn: ;)
guest000000: im also intrigued by http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=frugalware
nyxkn: can't say about it, just heard the name here and there
guest000000: check the package
nyxkn: judging from the packages, it's pretty much around gentoo's stable though
guest000000: yes, a bit behinf
guest000000: what about chakra?
nyxkn: never even heard :)
guest000000: based (used to) on arch
nyxkn: ohh, yes, arch with kde
nyxkn: didn't recall the name
guest000000: well, thanks for all
guest000000: ive got to go
guest000000: was great to talk to you
nyxkn: all right :)
guest000000: see you
nyxkn: bye!
