Phoronix IRC Log: 2010-06-19

giselher: hi :D, any steam news ?
FliPPeh_: STEAM??ßß
FliPPeh_: No. No there is not.
FliPPeh_: I'd know
FliPPeh_: :(
Kano: michaellarabel: are you sure you did not benchmark crap with vaapi
Kano: michaellarabel: you used it WRONG
Kano: in 2 cases even
Kano: when you use the vaapi patched mplayer you use vdpau like
Kano: -va vdpau -vo vdpau
Kano: and vaapi like
Kano: -va vaapi -vo vaapi
Kano: you can not use a vc override for vdpau
Galaxy|: does anyone in here use pyrit ?
Galaxy|: I am having a hell of a time getting it to recognize both GPUs on my 5970
Galaxy|: it seems to only recognize one
bluekoala: Hello
bluekoala: Hmmm 5970
bluekoala: That's sexy hardware
eNTi: if only the drivers weren't such utter crap
bluekoala: Yeah
bluekoala: But still
bluekoala: a 200mt nuke is still a 200 mt nuke even if it's just in a museum
bluekoala: Sexy
bluekoala: Makes me wish I was an assembly guru
bluekoala: And billionnaire
bluekoala: Doing free work for ATI
eNTi: i wished there were more than two players in the consumer graphics market
eNTi: or processor
eNTi: those two market segments have a lot in common with the american "democratic" voting system, where you got two parties to vote for and need at least a few million bucks to enter the competition. it's all rather odd and expensive. i don't quite understand the notion of this, but it all looks pretty fishy to me. but i'm paranoid :D
christian_lappy: source perfromance seems to be shitty on mac
christian_lappy: mac drivers suck it seems
mastertheknife: Yeah
mastertheknife: they are slower
Kano: bluekoala: did you try unigine 2.1 yet
bluekoala: Nope
bluekoala: I have a hardware issue on my comp
bluekoala: Where fullscreen 3d causes my computer to freeze
bluekoala: Happenned with both ubuntu and windows XP
bluekoala: So until I change my mobo, cpu, ram, vga; I'm not playing around with 3d apps/games too much
Kano: maybe you need a better psu
bluekoala: This hardware will make a very overpowered fileserver though ;)
bluekoala: I bought a better PSU
bluekoala: 900w
bluekoala: And the issue persists
Kano: hmm
bluekoala: I stress tested the VGA and CPU; no freezes
Kano: buy nvidia then ;)
bluekoala: I tested mem; no issues
bluekoala: I don't like Nvidia to be honest
bluekoala: I find the company to be a total dickhead
bluekoala: I always root for the underdog
Kano: just tested maverick + xserver 1.8. ati 10-6 directly worked
Kano: did not notice that in the release notes
Kano: ati is no underdog
bluekoala: Sure it is
bluekoala: It's just less obvious these days
Kano: on win they sold much more dx11 cards than nv
Kano: i would not call em underdogs
bluekoala: It was a lot more obvious when Voodoo cards were around
Kano: but the linux support is less optimal
bluekoala: Right
bluekoala: But how much profit on each card though?
bluekoala: 15%?
bluekoala: 25%?
bluekoala: vs Nvidia, which is probably closer to 30%-40%?
bluekoala: I gotta admit, Nvidia is doing pretty bad these days
bluekoala: Fermi's not the godsend nvidiots were hoping for
Kano: dont know, but when you buy a high performance card for linux then nv is certainly first choice
bluekoala: I had a gf6600
bluekoala: It treated me well with wine
Kano: fermi sells very good, especially the very expensive cards for hpc
Kano: it seems due to the ecc checks they are better suited than ati cards
bluekoala: wtf?
bluekoala: Nvidia has EEC VRAM???
bluekoala: *ECC
Kano: thats emulated, but similar to ecc
bluekoala: Ah
bluekoala: I had a Geforce 2 MX 440 with bad VRAM on it
bluekoala: Ruined the whole Nvidia thing for me
Kano: i did stop to count my non working gfx cards
Kano: but ati did not last longer
bluekoala: That and "The way it's meant to be played" I find is ver Steve Jobs ish and Bill Gates ish
Kano: i hat at least a gf 6800gt which died and 2 ati x700 (pro) and some others
bluekoala: I gave away a tbird 1ghz with radeon 9000pro w/ ubuntu 8.04 on it; very solid system
bluekoala: I didn't buy in to the x trile digit series series
bluekoala: I thought it was a scam
bluekoala: *triple
Kano: basically every gfx card can die
Kano: i see no vendor perference here
bluekoala: I had fans failed a lot
bluekoala: But no real failures
bluekoala: Ever
Kano: well i replaced default ati fans on 2 cards
Kano: and used ac cooling solutions instead
bluekoala: Ever used water cooling?
christian_lappy: those damn valve guys are super busy fixinf mac erf issues ,,therfor stam will happen (if ever) 2011 at best
christian_lappy: imho
djura-san: o/
mastertheknife: http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_os.asp
mastertheknife: Mac's market share is 6.7% and Linux is 4.5%
Kano: i dont think those stats are correct
Kano: that just a snapshot on some sites
christian_lappy: i think perf wise linux would be the mucher better plattform to support
mastertheknife: yeah
mastertheknife: Kano: I think they are correct
Kano: well correct in the sense of the checked websites
Kano: but not as whole
FliPPeh_: There's still PCs without itnernet :(
mastertheknife: lol FliPPeh_
FliPPeh_: plays some Zombie Panic
SirRedTooth: hey
FliPPeh: And I thought #c was bad
FliPPeh: But #c++ is even worse
FliPPeh: "You're problem is not that you're new, your problem is that you're stupid"
FliPPeh: For not wanted to download a huge library to fool around with sockets for a small hobby project
FliPPeh: s/wanted/wanting
asraniel: FliPPeh: work with qt when using c++, it makes your life much easier
mastertheknife: asraniel: I saw your message yesterday about tf2. have you tried -dxlevel 81?
mastertheknife: asraniel: Yeah, the right tool for the job, C++ for big projects\QT, C for small tiny programs
RambJoe: fffffuuuuuuuu
RambJoe: i accidentally deleted dpkg
RambJoe: i accidentaly type sudo rm -rf /var/lib/dpkg/
RambJoe: instead of
RambJoe: i accidentaly type sudo rm -rf /var/lib/dpkg/lock
Kano: RambJoe: was stupid anyway
RambJoe: :(
Kano: becaue when you want to do something with the file you do
Kano: fuser -k /var/lib/dpkg/lock
Kano: but you never delete it!
RambJoe: oh
RambJoe: i kept getting proccessing errors though
RambJoe: like dpkg: error processing man-db (--configure):
Kano: well just install kanotix now ;)
Kano: my distro at least works ;)
RambJoe: lol
RambJoe: does pacman use dpkg?
Kano: no idea
adrian_broher: until some raises the hammer like RambJoe did?
Kano: play pacman ;)
RambJoe: is tehre a way to install dpkg though lol
RambJoe: well here it goes im going to install arch
Daekdroom: I hate blood's metallic smell
RambJoe: omfgomfofmg
RambJoe: i did update-grub
RambJoe: and it found arch linux :D
giselher: :D
Daekdroom: Did you fix dpkg? :P
RambJoe: nope lol
RambJoe: would probably be easier to reinstal ubuntu
RambJoe: in a forum i saw you had to use a live cd
Daekdroom: Or copy the dpkg folder from the livecd
RambJoe: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=197819
RambJoe: yeah might do that
Daekdroom: oh wait, wouldn't work
RambJoe: oh
Daekdroom: It's not the binary folder, is it?
RambJoe: its /var/lib/dpkg
Daekdroom: If it doesn't have any specific configuration data, I think it would work
RambJoe: :)
RambJoe: will do that once arch is setup, if i ever want to go back to ubuntu lol
Daekdroom: Hell, I've seen people copying /sbin/ from the LiveCD and see it go all smoth..
giselher: what does dpkg do?
Daekdroom: giselher, it's the debian package manager
Daekdroom: Backend of apt-get, aptitude etc
RambJoe: yeah you need it to update and install software lol
RambJoe: why cant they just release the source to compile :(
giselher: thanks :D
RambJoe: well not source but just so you can do make install
giselher: if you delete pacman in arch, you download pacman.static and reinstall it with pacman.static -S pacman :D
RambJoe: :D
Daekdroom: Dpkg is shipped in a .deb, in ubuntu, I think
RambJoe: yeah i can download the deb for it
RambJoe: problem is
Daekdroom: Which is good thanks to its updateability... however, a paradox..
RambJoe: you need dpkg to install the deb lol
Daekdroom: It's like having to compile a compiler in a system that doesn't have one
giselher: extract the deb with gzip
RambJoe: can you do that?
Daekdroom: Yeah
RambJoe: :D
Daekdroom: Copy everything to its folder and pretend it's alright
giselher: I installed a ubuntu package on arch this way
RambJoe: fixed it :D
RambJoe: i didn't think you could
RambJoe: well i googled it once and someone said you had to do some hacking
RambJoe: so i assumed it was harder than that lol
giselher: RambJoe: well, every package has the files, so why should you not unzip it and copy all files
RambJoe: oh shit i dont have the status file
RambJoe: i touched it and it worked :D
RambJoe_: hi
giselher: hy
giselher: oops :)
mastertheknife: hey giselher
giselher: hy mastertheknife
giselher: any steam news :D
mastertheknife: nah :(
mastertheknife: valve is still dead silent
giselher: I really hoped they would say something on the e3 :(
JEEB: inb4 TheCakeIsALie 2.0
mastertheknife: giselher: you got tf2 mate?
giselher: mastertheknife: nope, I am offline player :D
giselher: only play games with story (except for super smash brothers brawl)
thomashc: hello
Gnurdux: would it be safe to assume that Linux will run fine on this:
Gnurdux: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220739
Nevtus: Gnurdux: I don't see anything that immediately pops out to me as something problomatic in Linux
Gnurdux: right
Gnurdux: nor do i
Gnurdux: i dont know about like the WiFi chipset though
Nevtus: yeah, wifi can be tricky
Nevtus: tried google'ing it for anyone that's already tried Linux on it?
Gnurdux: i havent found anyone who used that entire series unfortunatel
Gnurdux: y
Gnurdux: well, i found someone complaining about ati graphics on some other model actually
RambJoe: how do i know if my video drivers installed properly on arch
RambJoe: i cant cange to 1920x1200 :(
Gnurdux: that sounds like not
RambJoe: oh i know what i did
RambJoe: or didn't
RambJoe: i made the package but didn't see i had to do the .run :$
RambJoe: k another n00b question
RambJoe: on openbox you know the apps menu on the desktop
RambJoe: us that meant to show apps you've installed?
thomashc: what do you mean?
RambJoe: like when you right click on the desktop
thomashc: whatabout it?
RambJoe: is it mean to show the programs you've isntalled
thomashc: It shows whatever you tell it too
RambJoe: as on mine it just shows programs that may or may not be installed
RambJoe: oh
RambJoe: how do i make it so it auto adds stuff i installed though :S
thomashc: You don't
RambJoe: oh :(
RambJoe: ubuntu did :(
thomashc: No they dont lol
thomashc: on ubuntu/debian I believe it uses one master list, but it's static, it doesn't change
RambJoe: :S
RambJoe: when i installed programs it would add it self to like applications > multimedia
thomashc: I don't think so...doesnt for me
RambJoe: xrandr: screen cannot be larger than 1600x1200 (desired size 1920x1200
programble: RambJoe: openbox menu is not dynamic unless you do some scripting and use pipe menus
RambJoe: ok thanks
RambJoe: anyone ever installed this
