bluekoala: I bought a droid/milestone and I love it..... Soooo much :S
bluekoala: It has a better camera built in than my digital camera
bluekoala: And GPS is nice too; put a speedometer on anything that's above ground
bluekoala: Including shoes
bluekoala: <3
bluekoala: con = Doesn't come with root access
bluekoala: Haven't found a REAL reason to have root on my phone yet;
bluekoala: I give Android 2.1 4.5/5
bluekoala: Keep in mind I just came from Blackberry OS on a storm 9530
bluekoala: Heh
bluekoala: You missed my monologue
bluekoala: Consider yourself lucky this time
bluekoala: ;p
bkero: A real reason to root your phone: tethering
FliPPeh: yay, §G RAM.
FliPPeh: 3
FliPPeh: God damn them Vuvuzelas
Ivanovic: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v606/lumpbucket/31945_402423067218_599782218_455890.jpg
FliPPeh: :))
AdrianBroher: http://kyon.pl/static/img/remiq.net_16272.jpg
FliPPeh: just watched the homefront trailer
FliPPeh: This story is too real
FliPPeh: It scares me
FliPPeh: I always feared Korea.
djura-san: o/
FliPPeh: \o
FliPPeh: They still execute people in the U.S.?
FliPPeh_: hell yes
FliPPeh_: Germany failed
FliPPeh_: People finally shut up around here
Daekdroom: Germany failed?
FliPPeh_: yes
FliPPeh_: Against Serbia :)
Daekdroom: Lol
FliPPeh_: I was hoping it happened
FliPPeh_: And the flying spaghetti monster listened to my prayers!
Daekdroom: There are a lot of surprises..
FliPPeh_: :)
FliPPeh_: Time to celebrate
FliPPeh_: puts on Pendulum
asraniel: usa is failing too
FliPPeh_: :)
FliPPeh_: I hate football
FliPPeh_: I hate everything associated with it
sado1: whats the third game today?
FliPPeh_: I hate overly crazy football fans
FliPPeh_: Especially them
Daekdroom: Everything is failing.
Daekdroom: England and an African country whose name I don't know how to figure out from its initials, sado1
sado1: give me them
Daekdroom: Wouldn't work. They're initials in portuguese :P
sado1: algeria?
Daekdroom: Something like that, yeah.
Daekdroom: Can't check it because I'm tied to dialup
sado1: I've already checked
sado1: well, if england would fail that game then it would beat everything before.
Daekdroom: curses at slow internet
Daekdroom: Incluiding France and Germany?
Daekdroom: and let's not forget Spain o.o
Daekdroom: I didn't watch a single game this year but Brazil x North Korea, in which I slept during the 2nd half. :P
sado1: well switzerland isn't as bad as algeria
asraniel: sado1: we beat the europe champion... so we are really good :D
sado1: or Spain is really bad
sado1: I dunno what happened to them
sado1: they smashed my country 6:0 just before world cup
sado1: well, they're going to advance neverthless, your group is lame
sado1: I don't believe they could lose with Honduras or Chile.
Ivanovic: sado1: don't underestimate chile
sado1: why shouldn't I
Daekdroom: Kitchen explosion!
FliPPeh_: For a moment I read "Kitten explosion"
FliPPeh_: I was sad
FliPPeh_: But now I'm happy again
Daekdroom: How the hell does a explosion happen in a kitchen when whatever is heating is still cold?
Sir_Brizz: was it into hot oil?
FliPPeh_: Hmmm
FliPPeh_: C or C++ for a chat server...
asraniel: c++ ftw
FliPPeh_: hmm!
asraniel: c++ / Qt ftw even more!
FliPPeh_: Oh yes, Qt was nice
FliPPeh_: I think I'm going for C++
FliPPeh_: So I can nicely wrap up my sockets in classes
FliPPeh_: Also safer array management with vectors
nyxkn: why would you choose C rather than C++?
FliPPeh_: I know C
FliPPeh_: I don't know C++ :)
nyxkn: fair enough :)
FliPPeh_: I know basic usage like vectors and other STL classes, normal classes and most of the general OOP
FliPPeh_: Even templates
FliPPeh_: But nothing in depth
nyxkn: i see i see
nyxkn: good chance to learn then :)
FliPPeh_: Yup
FliPPeh_: But I'm a C fanboy, too :)
FliPPeh_: Linus Torvalds hates C++, I feel forced to dislike it, too
FliPPeh_: But on the other hand, as I'm going to work in the software industry anyways, I should really get to know it
monreal: just use vala :)
FliPPeh_: Na
FliPPeh_: Too exotic
FliPPeh_: If I want to go off the mainstream, I've got Haskell
FliPPeh_: :):)
nyxkn: looks up what vala is
FliPPeh_: It's interesting
FliPPeh_: IIRC it is a full featured OOP language that gets converted to readable C
nyxkn: hmm
monreal: right... c#-like syntax which gets translated into c (glib/gobject)
FliPPeh_: hates C#
FliPPeh_: imaginary replaces C# with Java
nyxkn: agrees
Sir_Brizz: I like C#
monreal: which would be basicly the same, only 10 years older and thus a bit worse syntax wise
FliPPeh_: C# itself is fine
FliPPeh_: But the runtime is bad.
nyxkn: how would new syntax be better than older one?
asraniel: monreal: you might as well use java, like c#, just more robust and better tested
FliPPeh_: And actually runs everywhere.
FliPPeh_: On the other had, saying that java is good because it runs on every platform is like saying anal sex is good because it works in every gender...
FliPPeh_: s/in/on.
monreal: I don't really use vala, just tried it a while ago and it still had some issues... but the concept is great and it rocks for gtk development
nyxkn: Lol!
FliPPeh_: WHY IN GODS NAME
FliPPeh_: Why does this TV Show has the right to call itself after the genius Galileo
FliPPeh_: If they do NOTHING but compare water slides for the TENTH TIME IN 2 MONTHS
asraniel: FliPPeh_: hehe, asked myself the same thing one time
FliPPeh_: Not even fun anymore
FliPPeh_: I thought they'd stop after the third time
Sir_Brizz: Java is more robust and better tested?
Sir_Brizz: is that why it runs like garbage on everything but Solaris and Windows?
asraniel: Sir_Brizz: runs like a charm on my linux machine
Sir_Brizz: you're either lucky or you don't care
FliPPeh_: OR you're not using the Sun implementation
FliPPeh_: But openjdk
Sir_Brizz: yes because openjdk works so much better?
asraniel: i use openjdk currently yes
Sir_Brizz: the only version of Java that runs well on Linux is the IBM one
Sir_Brizz: and it still eats memory like a pig
asraniel: Sir_Brizz: it works really well. what kind of problems do you have with it? i'm really interested, i use java quite a lot to develop etc, so it would be good to know if it has serious problems, perhaps in areas i use not so often
Sir_Brizz: I can't really say anything specific. In Linux it just uses tons of memory and it always feels like everything written in java is sluggish
FliPPeh_: Especially GUI
Sir_Brizz: in Windows if I run Eclipse it is running badly if it uses 32mb of ram
FliPPeh_: But that's what I get in windows, too
Sir_Brizz: in Linux I can't get it to use less than 15mb of ram on a good day
Sir_Brizz: 150mb*
asraniel: Sir_Brizz: ok.. couldn't observe that here. my last app i wrote feels quite fast. but i didn't really watch the memory consumption, because i have nothing to compare it with
Sir_Brizz: try Windows and try Solaris
Sir_Brizz: Java just works so much better there
Sir_Brizz: which makes sense because it is where Sun focuses all their attention
asraniel: needs a game to play...............
FliPPeh_: asraniel: what genre?
asraniel: FliPPeh_: hm. adventure, rpg something. exploring stuff, solving puzzles, collecting things
FliPPeh_: Azalyn: NETHACK!
asraniel: FliPPeh_: Yeah i know... i should
asraniel: FliPPeh_: but i have no numpad on my laptop, and because of that i rarely play nethack now. if i play, it's on my iphone
FliPPeh_: meh
asraniel: perhaps i should just code my own game.. but i hate start to code.. the beginning is always long and frustrating until you can see something
mastertheknife: asraniel: TF2
mastertheknife: asraniel: it does have items that you can collect and craft
asraniel: mastertheknife: i even own tf2.. but never played it. was quite slow last time i tried with wine, and always booting into windows is lame..
FliPPeh_: asraniel: What's your system?
FliPPeh_: I can play it with windows speeed
asraniel: FliPPeh_: well, has been some time. ah, my main problem was a freeze when starting the game anyway. core2 duo, nvidia 140 something
FliPPeh_: Freeze on game start?
FliPPeh_: Disabling Steam-In-Game helps
divisionmd: hello
FliPPeh_: Hellow!
FliPPeh_: Oh wow
FliPPeh_: He logged in IRC from root
FliPPeh_: Bad idea?
FliPPeh_: thinks so
nyxkn: i believe the whole "no root" thing is a bit overrated
skyhirider: well, running general scripts from root or doing anything else makes me feel nervous at best
FliPPeh_: Oh yes.
FliPPeh_: The whole "linux is secure" aspect is based on this strict rule
skyhirider: if for example, i browse the web for something on the server root is not a good idea
FliPPeh_: Root should only be used for root tasts
skyhirider: indeed
FliPPeh_: There was soooo many occasions where this saved my ass
FliPPeh_: When I mistyped a command
skyhirider: there is also selinux but that thing is heck annoying
FliPPeh_: like "dd"
skyhirider: heh, dd is dangerous if you mix somethign up, but so are many commands
FliPPeh_: dd can wipe everything without mercy and without asking or confirmation
nyxkn: but, in a home environment, i would only care about my data. and that can be easily deleted even without root. doing damage to the system isn't that much of a tragedy.
skyhirider: well, when i use console only root is fine, but when a gui is involved i dont lik e using root as you can misclick
FliPPeh_: Well
FliPPeh_: There is a tragedy if your disk is wiped because of root access
FliPPeh_: I don't like root-GUI because it doesn't have any GTK settings :x
skyhirider: ideally, you should have all your non-redownloadable data on a cloud somewhere
FliPPeh_: cloud?
FliPPeh_: That's even worse
FliPPeh_: This cloud hype is bad
FliPPeh_: It encourages people to put private data and some server where people can use it for ANYTHING
FliPPeh_: Like facebook
nyxkn: well, even if you wipe your disk, you would only "permanently" lose your personal data. the system can be set up again easily.
skyhirider: you can always use encryption, but i agree, only put my scripts and notes to cloud, dont have any classified data so far
FliPPeh_: GPG :)
FliPPeh_: What cloud service are you using?
skyhirider: dropbox and ubuntuone, thou ubuntu one is bugged on my system currently
skyhirider: usually just save my scripts at google docs and thats it
FliPPeh_: heh
FliPPeh_: I have my own cloud
FliPPeh_: Next to my television
FliPPeh_: A little Intel Atom board
FliPPeh_: Rigged it up as a home server :)
skyhirider: well, i have my server but still
FliPPeh_: But I don't consider it a cloud
skyhirider: well, cloud is just a new overhyped word of something that was here before
FliPPeh_: yup...
FliPPeh_: Hype is annoying
skyhirider: but necessary
skyhirider: pushes the industry forward
FliPPeh_: The industry is all about web apps now
FliPPeh_: and "liking" stuff
FliPPeh_: Youtube starts with the "like", too
FliPPeh_: Facebook is like cancer
FliPPeh_: But worse
skyhirider: heh
FliPPeh_: It doesn't kill you, it keeps you alive to hurt you even longer
skyhirider: i just cant wait for the first: ooops, we lost your private naked pics, sry
skyhirider: but people are to blame, they need to know that its not almighty
FliPPeh_: People are stupid
FliPPeh_: Users are
FliPPeh_: I learned that a while ago
skyhirider: i learned that in high school, but we can educate them if they let us
nyxkn: you can't educate people not willing to be educated :)
FliPPeh_: Another problem :/
FliPPeh_: I still think there should be a computer driving license
FliPPeh_: That's the problem when people don't know how things work
skyhirider: was thinking the same thing flippeh
FliPPeh_: It's like receiving the car drivers license for free, and blaming OTHER people for accidents
FliPPeh_: oh god my stomach hurts, too much ice tea
FliPPeh_: BUT I LOVE THE PEACH
skyhirider: haha
FliPPeh_: :
FliPPeh_: o
FliPPeh_: :o
nyxkn: :o
FliPPeh_: :O!
nyxkn: o.O
FliPPeh_: :(
nyxkn: :o? :'(
FliPPeh_: Kittens :)
nyxkn: Lol
DeathCrawler: nobody speaks of steam anymore lol
tkmorris: http://store.steampowered.com/public/client/steam_client_linux :(
tkmorris: that's why
DeathCrawler: =/
DeathCrawler: tkmorris: i know man
DeathCrawler: In E
DeathCrawler: *E3
DeathCrawler: Valve announced Steam for PS3,,, Linux? =/
tkmorris: well, if they finish it completely, with no known bugs left on all other platforms
tkmorris: but I don't really mind minor bugs
tkmorris: the only problem would be people blaming GNU/Linux for it
DeathCrawler: yea
The_Muh: valve could be the favorite game developer for thousands of people... if they release the god damn steam-client for linux
tkmorris: yeah, they've already got the indies, they do GNU/Linux
The_Muh: yup
The_Muh: with other words: they already have games for linux
The_Muh: altitude for example
Quan-Time: tkmorris: does that mean that SOME people are able to get the linux client, for testing purposes ?
tkmorris: Quan-Time: not from this same method
Quan-Time: ok.. ill rephrase my question
tkmorris: just if this file is being served from some other service
Quan-Time: that link you provided says to me that there is a some-what official linux steam client, but its closed source alpha / beta.. is this a correct assumption ?
tkmorris: it's a valid hypothesis
tkmorris: if it's a pre-alpha the devs sure have access to it
tkmorris: but I can only guess
The_Muh: why should valve put it on the public server?
The_Muh: should could use (s)ftp or something else
The_Muh: or just e-mail
tkmorris: e-mails aren't automatic
The_Muh: put in on a public place and lock it... dont make any sense
The_Muh: tkmorris: you can make it automatic ^^
The_Muh: valve == programmers
tkmorris: you can make it, but it's not reliable, so many copies of files all spread
The_Muh: but... okay, mail is stupid for that... whats about (s)ftp?
The_Muh: login, grab the file, logoff... no public viewig
Azerthoth: rsync, git, etc etc
tkmorris: there's no harm in it
tkmorris: it's all publicity
The_Muh: yup
tkmorris: we can't access it anyway
The_Muh: but why they show us "here it is, but you cant get it" - thats cruel
Azerthoth: ?!? like the peep show so far hasnt been?
The_Muh: ?
The_Muh: i should ask for donations - then i buy valve ^^
The_Muh: no cake in portal 2... damn
