Phoronix IRC Log: 2010-06-14

FliPPeh: Mhh
FliPPeh: Repeating the same mistake as last year
FliPPeh: I've only had vacation for a week and I already spent a whole night playing TF2
kurros: lol
FliPPeh: Damn wine!
FliPPeh: Both the drink and program!
FliPPeh: Both are headache inducing when overconsumed :)
kurros: i like the concept of TF2 i just suck at shooters
FliPPeh: Well, play engineer :D
kurros: unless there is aim-assist :)
FliPPeh: Let something shoot FOR you!
FliPPeh: There's really not much to aim
FliPPeh: 99% of the weapons are either explosive OR spread-shot
FliPPeh: Makes it even more fun, because there's not really any cracks blowing off your toenail around 5 corners over 60 miles
mikeplus64: I've never played TF2 but it seems when all else fails in FPS's - spam rockets or grenades.
FliPPeh: Hey...
FliPPeh: That's normal!
mikeplus64: lol
kurros: yeah when played i was a solider that spray and prayed the ground with rockets
kurros: but people got mad at me
FliPPeh: It's much more complex than that
FliPPeh: You sometimes have to aim roughly near the target
FliPPeh: 7:36 AM, no sleep
FliPPeh: Current time: 27.401 kiloseconds
FliPPeh: yay for kiloseconds
kurros: what would we do without them
FliPPeh: panic
skyhirider: if i format both drives that use raid 1 or remove all the partition on both disk, will it remove the raid array config?
skyhirider: got a problem while setting up a raid array: the kernel was unable to read the partition table on dev/md0, anyone knows how can i fix this?
Terrax121: Hi
Terrax121: Anyone know why I can't write to the channel #radeon?
FliPPeh: 50ks!
SilverCode: does anyone know if there is a way to write to memory mapped io without requestion the region from the kernel?
FliPPeh: uhm
FliPPeh: /dev/[k]mem ?

Sleepy_Coder: (14:43:40) < meGenius> http://tcs-security-blanket.blogspot.com/2010/06/broken-links-in-linux-file-systems-can.html <-- I was kind of sad because I didn't see anything new :(
Sleepy_Coder: Well, aside from the part about SELinux enforcing inode comparison on symbolic links, that part was interesting.
Sleepy_Coder: Otherwise, LOLTROJAN
FliPPeh: grr
FliPPeh: I can't get this to center!
Sleepy_Coder: That's what she said.
FliPPeh: :|
Sleepy_Coder: Would have been nice to see the OCZ SSD compared to Intel's for random read/write
Sleepy_Coder: Though I can understand the need to point out OCZ is more than worth while.
Sleepy_Coder: hides
skyhirider: when im setting up raid1 and i want to have grub on the mainbootrecord, do i need to manually copy it to both drivers or will the raid array automatically set up grub on both disks?
FliPPeh: int n, i, d;
FliPPeh: Man
FliPPeh: I'm not gonna undetand any of it tomorrow
mjr: software raid? it doesn't touch MBR, you'll need to install grub on both drives if you want both to be bootable
skyhirider: well, if i select mbr during install it will install grub on my usb key
skyhirider: and i have no idea how to install grub on both drives from the installer
mjr: you don't
skyhirider: well then lets say i installed grub on my usb key and booted from it to my system, what then?
mjr: personally I wouldn't bother, just have a recovery media handy to fix the boot sector on the secondary drive in case
mjr: oh?
skyhirider: problem is i cant get grub to work on even one drive
mjr: well, if you boot from your usb key, actually it shouldn't matter which drive you have
mjr: ah :)
mjr: anyway, if you can get the usb key to work at all, it should work from either
skyhirider: ideally, i could setup grub on both disks somehow from a live usb but i dont know how to do it
skyhirider: well, booting from the key launches grub, booting from any of the disks show a white linking line like when youre waiting to type something
skyhirider: im puzzled
skyhirider: when i run grub-install and the name of the device, it will write grub to the mbr ?
mjr: last I tried, installing ubuntu on a software raid-1 went nicely (from the alternate installer that supports raid); installs grub only on the first drive I believe but at least it worked.
mjr: I've no experience with other things
mjr: yes
mjr: do recall that you'll want the raw disk device, not eg. the md device
skyhirider: well, trying the newest Debian netinstall and I ran into two problems, first it cant re-read partitioning after i write the changes during install and second is the grub
skyhirider: yeah, /dev/sda instead of /mdx
mjr: (ubuntu alternate installer is the same as debian installer, of course, but versions may vary in their bugs; there was a time where the ubuntu version was buggy as hell too...)
skyhirider: wasnt sure if there wasnt any residual old raid1 setting currputing the disk so im running dd if=/dev/zzero of/dev/sda in the background
skyhirider: yeah, read up that what i experienced was and old bug that resurfaced froma bout 8 years of slumber
skyhirider: talk about bad luck
FliPPeh: C is strange
FliPPeh: Python: (120 - 44) / 2 = 38
FliPPeh: C: (120 - 44) / 2 = 68
mjr: I don't think so...
FliPPeh: I DO think so
FliPPeh: Because it does that
FliPPeh: But I don't know why
mjr: I'd say you're calculating something else by accident :]
FliPPeh: mvprintw(0, 50, "(%d - %d) / 2 = %d", COLS, WIDTH, (COLS - WIDTH) / 2);
FliPPeh: I'm echoing it
FliPPeh: I'm using the echo'd values
FliPPeh: Alright
FliPPeh: I found the issue
FliPPeh: WIDTH was expanded to (term) + (term)
FliPPeh: Surround it by another paranthese, and it works
FliPPeh: I hate #define :)
FliPPeh_: Yay
FliPPeh_: Bored enough to write an ncurses kiloseconds program
djura-san: im off. bais people o/
FliPPeh_: nom nom
RambJoe: http://www.gametrailers.com/e3/livefeed/microsoft
RambJoe: microsfot lol
FliPPeh_: Nanosmooth!
FliPPeh_: oh hey
FliPPeh_: It's indeed live
NigeyUK: weeeeeeee
NigeyUK: anyone watching E3 later ?
christian_lappy: when is valve ti e ?
NigeyUK: not sure
RambJoe: http://www.gametrailers.com/e3/livefeed/microsoft
RambJoe: they might be on that
RambJoe: prepare for lulz as they announce linux support with microsoft
christian_lappy: haha
Sleepy_Coder: :D
NigeyUK: lol
Nevtus: has it been confirmed Valve will be in the Microsoft conference?
NigeyUK: no..lol
NigeyUK: valve canceled their appearence altogether
asraniel: really?
Nevtus: that was just their own Portal 2 only conference
NigeyUK: Valve E3 press conference has been canceled
NigeyUK: Cynamite reports: Valve confirmed in an e-mail that there will be no press conference at this years E3. The press event has been completely canceled. (
NigeyUK: they just have a booth ..
Nevtus: they could still appear in the other larger conferences
Nevtus: the EA one would make sense
oNNy: what, steam on linux confirmed?
Nevtus: nope
oNNy: ;P
asraniel: it's funny how much phoronix needs to lie to the people, just to get some ad revenue
Sleepy_Coder: I wonder what other feeds there are.
FliPPeh_: WHAT!
oNNy: WHAOUT :O
tkmorris_: e3 live?
Nevtus: for some reason I cannot get the gametrailers feed to work
Sleepy_Coder: I love how they're making XBox the priority over PC gamers.
RambJoe: FUCK TREYARCH
Sleepy_Coder: Hear that clap?
RambJoe: not buying their pos game :@
Sleepy_Coder: That was the half-hearted fuck you clap.
RambJoe: was considering buying it too
Sleepy_Coder: orly
Sleepy_Coder: I could swear I experienced something like Kinect on Wii.
Sleepy_Coder: Fuck you marketing.
Sleepy_Coder: I wonder how we sound when we learn Japanese and go speak it over there
Sleepy_Coder: 0.o
Sleepy_Coder: would never look like that.
Sleepy_Coder: never ever.
Sleepy_Coder: good god 0.o
Sleepy_Coder: well they've re-defined gore...
tkmorris_: mplayer can't play e3 stream very well :\
Nevtus: tkmorris_: link?
Sleepy_Coder: http://www.gametrailers.com/e3/livefeed/microsoft
tkmorris_: mplayer 'rtmp://cp98557.live.edgefcs.net/live/e3_750@27739'
Nevtus: that isn't working for me
tkmorris_: it keeps on droping
Nevtus: ah thanks tkmorris_
Nevtus: I'll try it anyway
tkmorris_: you can use -loop 0
tkmorris_: it will keep reconnecting
tkmorris_: very annoying, but works
Nevtus: tkmorris_: it works okay for me
Sleepy_Coder: okay I lol'd
tkmorris_: it got stable here too
RambJoe: oh shit
RambJoe: they said everything they announce is only on 360
Sleepy_Coder: it's like... mutation = witches
Sleepy_Coder: they can do anything, even breathe fire :D
Sleepy_Coder: just boo.
Sleepy_Coder: to be honest, I was expecting the visual quality to be a bit nicer, I'm sure the game will be fun, but the story will be meh, the lambents that can seemingly do anything because of untold mutation will be frustrating...
Sleepy_Coder: I was interested mostly to see if the unreal engine had been majorly updated or something
Nevtus: looks like more of the same
Sleepy_Coder: I commend them on their epic beasts though
Sleepy_Coder: I wonder if CryTech is attending E3
NigeyUK: yeah, wednesday i think
Sleepy_Coder: fap fap fap.
Sleepy_Coder: I expect them to be the most visually stunning
Sleepy_Coder: it could be the worst game ever and I'd still buy it for the majesty of the visuals.
NigeyUK: haha snap
NigeyUK: ii use the new cryengine as my upgrade time
Sleepy_Coder: :D
Sleepy_Coder: "LOL BUT CAN IT PLAY CRYSIS 3?"
Sleepy_Coder: or is this 4...
Sleepy_Coder: (pretending the sub-games had numbers)
NigeyUK: lmao
NigeyUK: fable 3 looks meh
Sleepy_Coder: Hmm, not a fan of RPGs.
Sleepy_Coder: totally real footage.
Sleepy_Coder: :OOOOO
NigeyUK: omg
Sleepy_Coder: Crytek :x
Sleepy_Coder: Bloody nipples.
Sleepy_Coder: But it wasn't real game footage :(
NigeyUK: nope :( sux
Nevtus: Halo...
NigeyUK: *yawn*
Sleepy_Coder: Yes, yawn.
Sleepy_Coder: The Halo books were my favorite.
Sleepy_Coder: The first Halo I played for hours on the MAC
Sleepy_Coder: MAC MAC MAC
NigeyUK: lol
Sleepy_Coder: It felt so much more polished, I remember comparing it againsnt the Windows version
Sleepy_Coder: But anyway...
Nevtus: more of the same. AGAIN
Sleepy_Coder: Pfft, Covenant ships flying in perfect straight lines.
Sleepy_Coder: surreal
Sleepy_Coder: I want the Mastercheif to get hit by one of the pods.
Sleepy_Coder: chief*
Sleepy_Coder: I liked it when just knocking them in the head from behind was enough to kill them
Sleepy_Coder: A longer kill-from-behind animation is meh
Nevtus: I'm not a fan so I'm not sure why I know this, but this isn't Master Chief, it's a prequal to the first game
Sleepy_Coder: Oh yes
Sleepy_Coder: So this should technically be before all the new tech they added in the later games.
Nevtus: well that was boring
Sleepy_Coder: Sort of meh.
Sleepy_Coder: Playable meh.
NigeyUK: haha cue the half arsed applause
Nevtus: haha, give him a mic
Sleepy_Coder: :D
Sleepy_Coder: whoo rgb camera
Sleepy_Coder: so much better than a regular camera
Sleepy_Coder: fuck that, i love controllers.
NigeyUK: how dare you want to use your hands! lol
Nevtus: I wonder when this thing will be used for directed advertising based on your appearance/location
Sleepy_Coder: Using my hands has led me through many great experiences :p
NigeyUK: lol
tkmorris_: play super-mario would be tiresome
Sleepy_Coder: why does this remind me of a certain many from a certain console...
Nevtus: it's always watching, it's always listening. AHHHHH!
Sleepy_Coder: :D
Sleepy_Coder: if you have sex in front of it, will it post to twitter about the experience
Sleepy_Coder: ?
Nevtus: I believe that is a bullet point on the back of the box
thomashc: wutr
thomashc: I come in
thomashc: look at the screen
thomashc: and see this
thomashc: if you have sex in front of it, will it post to twitter about the experience
Sleepy_Coder: okay, they made them applaud.
thomashc: O_o
Sleepy_Coder: thomashc: watching e3 live feed?
Sleepy_Coder: (for ms-specific things)
thomashc: I'm not lol
Nevtus: yet again, this shit won't work for my accent
Sleepy_Coder: what accent is that?
Nevtus: Scottish
Sleepy_Coder: hot.
Sleepy_Coder: He has an awesome coat.
Sleepy_Coder: I want his coat.
Nevtus: I like my controllers :(
Sleepy_Coder: It's so fun being bi/gay, when you tell a braud she looks like shit she actually takes it to heart because of your supposed good taste.
Sleepy_Coder: Er... I mean my sister just walked in.
Sleepy_Coder: And was promptly dispatched.
Sleepy_Coder: Back to the feed :p
NigeyUK: cruel man! lol
Sleepy_Coder: I think she likes it, she keeps coming into my room now and again...
Sleepy_Coder: You have buck teeth, girl.
NigeyUK: pmsl
Nevtus: uhhhhhhh bad acting!
NigeyUK: cringeworthy
Nevtus: why do they even bother?
Sleepy_Coder: I'm a girl, I know how to work electronics with my body language and harsh tone of voice :D
NigeyUK: lol
Nevtus: "hey, let's BING(tm) it!"
Sleepy_Coder: MORE STUFF TO TALK ABOUT :D
NigeyUK: lmao
Sleepy_Coder: It's, it's following me :OOO
christian_lappy: bing sucks
NigeyUK: will it follow sexual movements though
Sleepy_Coder: see the camera bob up and down.
Sleepy_Coder: I would laugh so hard.
Nevtus: she should have used the universal internet hello "TITS OR GTFO"
NigeyUK: yush!
Sleepy_Coder: YESSSSSSSS
Sleepy_Coder: a.... condom
Sleepy_Coder: don't need more family.
Nevtus: this is awful
Sleepy_Coder: Pfft.
Nevtus: just show the damn thing and get off the stage
Sleepy_Coder: Kill.
Sleepy_Coder: BulletStorm, I want to see it now.
Sleepy_Coder: It looked very creative, aside from the annoying death screams and excessive gore.
Sleepy_Coder: That's not HD.
Nevtus: XBOX TURN OFF
Sleepy_Coder: XBOX SAY XBOX SAY XBOX
Sleepy_Coder: buwhahahah
Nevtus: XBOX RROD NOW
Sleepy_Coder: XBOX INITIATE SKYNET TAKEOVER
Nevtus: sunglasses indoors
Nevtus: fake demonstations of a bad product. awesome
FliPPeh_: Fake demo, bad products?
FliPPeh_: You're not talking about nvidia, are ya?
RambJoe: now kids will think tigers are friendly
Nevtus: no, the xbox motion thing formally know as Natal
Nevtus: *known
Sleepy_Coder: yeesh
FliPPeh_: What's it now known as?
Nevtus: for some reason this guy reminds me of Johnny Knoxville
Sleepy_Coder: Was Johnny Knoxville an autistic manchild?
FliPPeh_: http://images.4chan.org/wg/src/1276535945716.jpg
FliPPeh_: KITTY ^_________^
NigeyUK: the new 360 is kinda cute :o
RambJoe: lol
RambJoe: brb new xbox with only new wifi and a bigger but still small harddrive
Sleepy_Coder: rage.
FliPPeh_: How big?
skyhirider: hmm, when bind9 runs as user bind after install, is there any reason to put it in a chroot jail? isnt it already in one?
Sleepy_Coder: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/columns/publishers-note/7688-Publisher-Note-10-E-for-Everyone-Except-Me <3
FliPPeh_: Looks what you people have done to me, with your kiloseconds
FliPPeh_: http://www.abload.de/img/2010-06-14-222753_799xvx5t.png
s_20: still no word on the big surprise?
Ivanovic: s_20: the big surprise is that there is no press conference at all
s_20: wait..what?
Ivanovic: you're surprised now, right?
s_20: i am indeed
FliPPeh: SURPRISE!
s_20: you're just screwing with me, right?
FliPPeh: Nope
Ivanovic: no
Ivanovic: the surprise really was that there is no conference
FliPPeh: I wonder why
s_20: that is probably among the lamest surprises ever
s_20: goddamit
FliPPeh: Drinking is good for you!
FliPPeh: I love this song
DeathCrawler: lol
RambJoe: http://www.tomshardware.com/news/Memory-DMA-Hack-PCMCIA-Windows,10646.html
RambJoe: microsfot fail
FliPPeh: Hm
FliPPeh: TF2 or Zombie Panic?
FliPPeh: Can't decide
Tallken: RambJoe: as the article says, the same thing is possible on Linux & OS X with a Firewire device
RambJoe: i thought it just said osx
Tallken: RambJoe: http://www.hermann-uwe.de/blog/physical-memory-attacks-via-firewire-dma-part-1-overview-and-mitigation , search: "Mitigation: Linux"; don't know if recent developments mitigate it on newer distros.
bluekoala: Good evening
