Phoronix IRC Log: 2010-06-09
FliPPeh: Laptop and Server each ~12 :)
bkero: I meant 25W total between all 3.
Sleepy_Coder: Rawr.
Sleepy_Coder: Seems like nvidia's drivers are only getting worse T.T
Kano: Sleepy_Coder: in which way
Sleepy_Coder: oh heh I'm on Windows though ;3
Sleepy_Coder: (atm)
Kano: yes i think the 257.15 crashed my testsystem
Sleepy_Coder: I've set the fan voltage to a static 40% multiple times and kept the stock clock rates on cpu/shader/memory but it keeps trying to auto-tune the fan for the temperature
Sleepy_Coder: Despite the fact that I ran the fan at 40% for ages
Sleepy_Coder: Framerate in L4D2 seems a bit lower... but I haven't actually measured anything.
Sleepy_Coder: Just annoyed with the noise when it autotunes the fan to 100% even at the slightest temperature increase
Sleepy_Coder: Oh yes I am on 257.15
Sleepy_Coder: I wonder if I'm running the beta or it's stable
Sleepy_Coder: I know I had the fan problem on the previous version though :S
Sleepy_Coder: 197.something
Sleepy_Coder: So anyway, I swapped out my GTX 260 for my older Radeon HD 4350
Sleepy_Coder: Just to see what things would be like with a fanless GPU again <3
Kano: well it crashed even while bd burning...
Kano: no 3d game, not sure if it was the nv driver, but i updated that shortly ago, now i reverted it...
Sleepy_Coder: I don't think my GTX 260 is needed anyway, my CPU hovers just under 40C which is lovely for 4 x 4.1Ghz, none of the games I play are too demanding... I'd be happy playing with slightly less appealing settings for some peace and quiet
Sleepy_Coder: just playing around while I have some time...
Sleepy_Coder: Maybe after this I'll backtrack to a nicer Nvidia driver.
Sleepy_Coder: I mean, the performance on the 260 is lovely I guess. *but* the card is longer than my penis, it's noisier than my cat, and it sucks power like a new renter >.< Just annoyed out of my mind at that.
Kano: maybe mod the cooler on it
Sleepy_Coder: Will surely improve airflow inside the case with that behemoth gone for a while, at least temporarily.
Sleepy_Coder: I haven't ever done cooler mods on GPUs :>
Kano: i modded radeon 9700/9800 pro
Kano: with ac replacement coolers
Sleepy_Coder: I don't think it would get any shorter with a different cooler... :x
Sleepy_Coder: Might help the noise, yes...
Sleepy_Coder: if I could get their blasted driver to stop being a nitwit.
Sleepy_Coder: hmm restarting.
Sleepy_Coder: (lol windows)
Kano: http://kanotix.com/Article243.html
Kano: you can try my distro
RedPepper: i there somebody of phoronix media here ?
RedPepper: i need one for some help with phoromatic ;)
FliPPeh: Unsurprisingly, the Linux drivers are way more stable in my experience
rufnut: bogomips : 66.35 << Powa!
Sleepy_Coder: :o
mjr: bogomips is not a benchmark. Therefore we don't actually know that's slow as molasses!
rufnut: lol
Sleepy_Coder: cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep bogomips
Sleepy_Coder: 3592.83
Sleepy_Coder: 3592.83
Sleepy_Coder: 3592.83
Sleepy_Coder: 3592.83
Sleepy_Coder: :-)
Sleepy_Coder: I have a lot of slow molasses :D
Kano: cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep bogomips
Kano: bogomips : 5984.80
Kano: bogomips : 31480.75
Kano: ;)
Sleepy_Coder: that's odd :o
rufnut: well its slow as molasses compared to these guys now
Sleepy_Coder: esplain?
Kano: basically it is cat too much, but the output is still funny
Sleepy_Coder: what is actually in there? >.>

Sleepy_Coder: ooh how fun
Sleepy_Coder: except for the scary nvidia driver version
rufnut: I am having issues with 2.6.34 and usb sticks
Kano: rufnut: i dont
Sleepy_Coder: is still waiting for Steam on Linux before he gets around to caring and fixing his Linux install :<
Kano: Sleepy_Coder: thats no normal u kernel, thats 2.6.34-ck1
rufnut: thats handy to know your on -4
Sleepy_Coder: I hate that point where you get to being able to do anything comfortable on any OS... so then you find it hard to prefer one over the other, and you judge them not in feature comparison, but how much work you would have to do to get to any of the others
Sleepy_Coder: hides
rufnut: heh its all gone quiet again
rufnut: mjr its slo trust me
rufnut: I thought I would fire it up to see what happens
rufnut: anyone know how to list things on an ISA bus ?
mjr: yes: you don't
rufnut: aww
rufnut: :-(
rufnut: just looking for info on what is on the pc
rufnut: no wonder I had to manually modprobe stuff
FliPPeh_: I wish NetHack was network based :)
FliPPeh_: A console MMORPG
oNNy: console mmorpg? xD
oNNy: wtf
FliPPeh_: Why do companies never talk about what they're doing?
FliPPeh_: Valve knows we know about the Linux client they are writing on
FliPPeh_: Yet they remain silent of their intentions
FliPPeh_: There's no need for a huge press statement where they give an answer to that, a simple "yes" or "no" somewhere sometimes should be enough and won't hurt anyone :/
Rednaxela: FliPPeh_, Hype generation, and being able to maintain non-committal position should they change their minds
Ivanovic: FliPPeh_: the problem is that a company tends to want the attention as free advertisement
Ivanovic: if they told you right now that there will be a linux client sometime in the future there will not be a huge hype about it if it still needs some 2 months till it is released
mastertheknife: hey FliPPeh_ you got it working?
djura-san: o/
kbios: Perfect score in OpenBVE Birmingham Cross-city south! http://imagebin.ca/view/ZJ51-V.html
FliPPeh_: mastertheknife: Nope, didn't make any further attempt
MPX: I have a HDD mounted as /home/ that is failing. I have another HDD (same size) that I would like to use as home instead. Problem is, the HDD already contain files on it (although the partition is EXT4). My question is, how can I transition my home folder on my one hdd to the other without losing any files?
Azalyn: http://www.dailytech.com/Speechcrime+Netherlands+Rules+Talking+or+Writing+About+Piracy+is+Illegal/article18668.htm
Azalyn: holy fucking SHIT.
Azalyn: what the hell is THAT bullshit
Azalyn: any netherlanders here? heh
FliPPeh_: Azalyn: Are those plans or has it been realized?
Azalyn: FliPPeh_: it's a court ruling.
christian_lappy: mhh...ubuntu 10.04 simply *works*
christian_lappy: great
FliPPeh_: hates ubuntu
FliPPeh_: hides
christian_lappy: to migrate user from windows, its great
FliPPeh_: More like SuSe
christian_lappy: i installled in on my cousins lappy
FliPPeh_: Windows -> KDE -> GNOME
christian_lappy: ha ?
FliPPeh_: You are now aware that every time you swallow you hear a little crackle in your ears.
alexandernst: steam for linux!
christian_lappy: now
christian_lappy: damn it
bkero: steam?
christian_lappy: we want it *now*
FliPPeh_: DID SOMEONE SAY STEAM?
FliPPeh_: shakes again
Azerthoth: sits back and laughs while the channel starts twitching and drooling
christian_lappy: hehe
Zerb_Riss: STEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEM
christian_lappy: miiiiiiiiiiiising aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Nevtus: hmm. Portal 2 release moved to 2011. Typical Valve...
ryan22: well my letter is getting published in the paper tomorrow: http://infinityos.net/node/47
ryan22: Nevtus: a late game is good eventually. a rushed game is bad forever
Nevtus: they shouldn't have made the date. It was probably intentional to get free early press it it
ryan22: lol
thomashc1: ryan22, does infinityos include codecs and flash?
ryan22: yep
ryan22: all the gstreamer ones and mplayer
ryan22: even libdvdcss
thomashc1: "infinityOS was created due to a belief that the software used to make, distribute, and enjoy your media should be completely free (as in freedom) and open."
thomashc1: not quite "completely"
thomashc1: XD
thomashc1: :P
thomashc1: just messing with you ;)
ryan22: we dont have software patents in canada so i can include all the codecs ;)
ryan22: mhahaha
thomashc1: lol
thomashc1: it's not so much of that really
thomashc1: I have SEVERAL licenses for media codecs
thomashc1: due to having several windows licenses
ryan22: i don't have any really
ryan22: well except coreavc
ryan22: i did buy coreavc
thomashc1: lol
thomashc1: software patents are stupid
thomashc1: ryan22, btw it's not that you can include them, thats not freedom
thomashc1: you can't MODIFY them
thomashc1: :P
ryan22: i dont include any of the bianry codecs
ryan22: except flash
thomashc1: lol
thomashc1: OH SHIT
thomashc1: KANTOIX JUST RELEASED A NEW VERSION
ryan22: if you want the windows dll stuff, you can use apt to get it on your own
thomashc1: I thought that beast had been dead since 2007
thomashc1: ryan22, windows dll stuff? huh?
ryan22: nah Kano is still around
Nevtus: flash isn't a codec
ryan22: nah not really
ryan22: its used like one though, which is a "bad thing"
thomashc1: flash is absolute shit
thomashc1: all of the decoding is done via software, not hardware
thomashc1: which is CRAP
ryan22: well there is hardware decoding on windows
ryan22: but its nowhere as good as pure vdpau
Nevtus: it's shit on anything not windows
thomashc1: yeah
thomashc1: but
thomashc1: most flash sites don't use the hardware decoder
bkero: what
Gametime: im looking for a channel about nvidia ion LE hack / netbook etc. i find the right spot here?
s_20: no new mac source release, even though it's wednesday
Sleepy_Coder: I would kidnap a Valve employee to hold hostage until they release a Mac title.
Sleepy_Coder: Weren't they going to release TF2 for the Mac this time?
s_20: or so the rumour had it
Sleepy_Coder: The news page of TF2 said it was coming soon :o
kurros: were they any new steamplay titles at all?
Sleepy_Coder: hmm what the hellthat is so wrong
Sleepy_Coder: They said the Orange Box is now available on Mac
Sleepy_Coder: But if you click on it, TF2 is still marked "Coming Soon"
kurros: omgwtfthatsbs
Sleepy_Coder: Sort of reminds me of when MS said Office supported the ODF format yet it still warned that some features might not be saved correctly and advised using their format instead. Just another supported feature that's not supported.
Modplan: Mac release is Thursday afaik
Sleepy_Coder: lol
Sleepy_Coder: quick l4d2 update
Sleepy_Coder: they fixed the problem where a survivor bot would freeze sometimes if you were smokered
Sleepy_Coder: they increased the friendly fire damage from the grenade launcher :(
Megagun: :(
Modplan: Do you regularly enjoy shooting your teammates with grenade launchers on l4d2?
Megagun: Actually, they increased self-damage
Megagun: not damage to teammates
Modplan: Well if you're that suicidal it's probably a good thing :p
Sleepy_Coder: Modplan: I am pretty good at staying clear of my teammates, I just hate those moments where you are set up with perfect aim and right at the last second a teammate dodges in front of you to try to steal the shot
Sleepy_Coder: That happens a lot. People not looking where they're going.
Sleepy_Coder: And then they yell at you.
RambJoe: portal surprise =
RambJoe: portal on linux?
Rednaxela: lolno
RambJoe: :(
RambJoe: portal 2 delated till 20100
RambJoe: delayed
Gametime: 20100? thats a while away.
RambJoe: wtf
RambJoe: i meant 2011
RambJoe: lol
RambJoe: fail
kurros: i wonder if valve will have released steam for linux in 20100
Sleepy_Coder: >.<
RambJoe: hope so
RambJoe: how come gabe has some posts on halflife2.net
RambJoe: and not on steam forums
RambJoe: or does he?
Nevtus: is there a gaben on the forum?
RambJoe: um
Nevtus: that would probably be his offical account if he had one
RambJoe: oh he does
RambJoe: 3 posts
RambJoe: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/member.php?u=48372
RambJoe: he should post more
mastertheknife: heh
mastertheknife: it seems tf2 is coming to mac tomorrow
dashcloud: so benchmarks tomorrow night or friday?
DonScott: soooo portal 2 is delayed until 2011.....HL2:ep3 not happening yet......what dare i say shall we say is Valves surprise announcement ?
Rednaxela: That Portal 2 delay is a lie like cake?
Rednaxela: Or perhaps the surprise is cake for everyone that comes?
DonScott: that'd be funny
sudokode: hello phronoxy people
sudokode: wait, phronixy*
sudokode: nvm, I obviously can't spell
