Phoronix IRC Log: 2010-06-03

Galaxy|: anyone know of a way to force the CPU Frequency Panel in GNOME to keep my preference of "On Demand" vs "Performance" that it defaults to when I reboot?
maligor: Galaxy|, yeah, depends on what you use to control it tho
Galaxy|: every time i boot into Linux it defaults to Performance
maligor: do you have cpufreqd running?
Sleepy_Coder: I'll laugh if it's defaulting to Performance because it knows you have a cord out the back to a wall socket.
maligor: that's the default rules
Sleepy_Coder: *shudder8
maligor: Galaxy|, anyway, if it's using cpufreqd, the rules are in /etc/cpufreqd.conf
Galaxy|: ah so it defaults to performance if its a Desktop PC?
Galaxy|: that's odd considering my i7 can speed step to save a pretty hefty amount of power when its idle
Galaxy|: it can step all the way down to 1.6GHz from 2.67GHz to save power
GNU\colossus: is there no truly white internal optical DVDRW-drive in the whole market?
jvizzle: what is the quake 1 tournie videos?
NigeyUK: meep
RambJoe: steam for linux confirmed yet?
NigeyUK: unoficially oficially :p

RambJoe: 2.6.32-22
NigeyUK: yups
RambJoe: is that newer :S
RambJoe: how do i list what kernals i have intalled, an uninstall old ones?
NigeyUK: check in /boot
RambJoe: yeah
RambJoe: 2.6.34 :S
NigeyUK: :o
RambJoe: why's an old one in update manager then :S
NigeyUK: not sure, kinda weird :S
RambJoe: if i install the updtes will it start using that older kernel?
NigeyUK: yep, but you can edit grub to keep using the newer 1
RambJoe: oh cool :)
RambJoe: grub always adds the old kernals back though lol
NigeyUK: should just be able to change the boot order, set the newer 1 to 0 so itll boot that first
RambJoe: ok thanks
RambJoe: grub.cfg?
NigeyUK: if you dont have grub 2 yup
RambJoe: i think i have grub 2 :S
NigeyUK: fk knows which 1 u edit in grub 2, its got so many idiotic files
RambJoe: they're in the grub.cfg
RambJoe: but it says # DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE at the top
RambJoe: and if you edit it, it will just update it self and revert the changes back
MPX: Uhm
MPX: You should edit the 40_custom something file
NigeyUK: thats the 1, cheers MPX
RambJoe: where's that
MPX: np
NigeyUK: what an assache though, i miss grub.cfg :(
NigeyUK: in /etc/grub.d
RambJoe: thanks :)
JEEB: uhh... RambJoe -- which distro are you using?
RambJoe: ubuntu
JEEB: ok, then you can remove kernels without extra work if you've installed them from deb packages
RambJoe: the only uncommented line in that file is exec tail -n +3 $0
JEEB: you can remove/purge the linux-image-2.6.XX files of the kernels you want to remove (old ones etc.)
RambJoe: in /boot?
JEEB: nope
JEEB: sudo aptitude remove/purge name-of-package
NigeyUK: oo apt purge ?
NigeyUK: didnt think you could do that for the kernel packages
JEEB: you can
JEEB: I've been doing it for some time now :V
NigeyUK: sweet! that makes life alot easier
JEEB: just make sure you don't remove the one you want to actually run with
RambJoe: thanks :)
NigeyUK: lol yeah RambJoe do a uname -a b4 hand just incase :P
RambJoe: 2.6.34-020634-generic
NigeyUK: :D
MPX: Nice...kernel upgrade from 22.33 to 22.35
MPX: Anywhere I can read a changelog?
JEEB: also, if there are version specific linux-headers that you don't need, you can remove those too. As I said, be cautious with these packages though
JEEB: removing the wrong one might just end you up with a non-booting syste
JEEB: *system
NigeyUK: yeah RambJoe nice knowing ya fella .. see ya after ya reinstall..lol
JEEB: and yeah, you can use aptitude search and/or tab autocompletion to get where you need to be :V
RambJoe: lol
NigeyUK: hey christian_lappy
RambJoe: it is linux-image-2.6.3........ right?
christian_lappy: NigeyUK: hey guy
NigeyUK: yuhuh
NigeyUK: hey dude, all good ?
christian_lappy: yeah, holiday today :-9
christian_lappy: :-)
JEEB: RambJoe, something like that -- see aptitude search linux-image for a list
NigeyUK: holiday? lazy git :p lol
christian_lappy: hehe..holiday in bavaria :-)+
MPX: I run 32 bit with pae kernel
MPX: I've had alot of trouble with 64 bit linux before so...
NigeyUK: where the fook is bavaria? :|
MPX: 32Bit pae uses all my ram anyways
RambJoe: i used synaptic lol
NigeyUK: MPX, i still dont run 64 bit linux
christian_lappy: NigeyUK: are you crazy ?
christian_lappy: NigeyUK: Bavaria Germany
s_20: NigeyUK: a southern german state
NigeyUK: serious, im an astronomer, not a geologist..lol
NigeyUK: ahhhh
NigeyUK: ello s_20!!
s_20: hi!
RambJoe: brb restart then
NigeyUK: hope he removed the right 1 lol
JEEB: I would guess
JEEB: If he wasn't completely out of his mind
NigeyUK: lol
s_20: soon enough he'll know
NigeyUK: grub....FAIL
s_20: i'm not a big fan of grub2
s_20: it doesn't like my usb keyboard
s_20: freezes when i try to load the module
NigeyUK: i hate it, whats with the ridiculous amount of mod files ffs !
s_20: so if i want to boot anything other than my current default setting i have to get an old ps2 keyboard
MPX: s_20, sure it's not an bios issue?
s_20: MPX: i'm not sure, no, i only saw that once i loaded the module in grub shit hit the fan
RambJoe: gnome takes forever to boot up :(
NigeyUK: lol least ya made it back fella :D
MPX: takes about 7 secs here
RambJoe: once the desktop is on the screen
RambJoe: the gnome panel takes about 20 to 30 seconds
RambJoe: lol
MPX: That is, full system boot takes about 7 :p
RambJoe: ssd?
NigeyUK: mines about 15 secs, prolly be about 10 if i wasnt using dhcp on the lan
MPX: RambJoe, You bet...fast ram too
RambJoe: mine takes like over a minute :(
NigeyUK: dam dude :(
RambJoe: i dont even know why
s_20: debian + kde <3
MPX: I installed ubuntu on my sisters computer the other day...normal hdd...I was amazed at how slow it was :p
RambJoe: lol
RambJoe: i need an ssd
MPX: It's better to wait now
RambJoe: how fast should it boot with a Phenom II 940 clocked at 3.4GHz?
MPX: You know...with the sand controllers and what not
MPX: I donno rambjoe...
NigeyUK: bleh gtg do more gardening, back later peeps!
MPX: Mines a 955 at 3.6 ghz.,....I'm running at 300 fsb though
MPX: So it should be slightly faster then your regular Multiplier overclock
RambJoe: whats your multiplier on
MPX: 12
RambJoe: i need to clock mine more lol
MPX: If you don't have a proper cooler, and a proper PSU, don't mess with the FSB unless you know what you're doing
RambJoe: with amd overdrive i got to 3.8
MPX: http://computershopper.com/var/ezwebin_site/storage/images/slideshow/ces-2009/cooler-master-cyberpower-party-thursday-january-8-2009/cooler-master-v10-cooler/189589-1-eng-US/cooler-master-v10-cooler_imagelarge.jpg
MPX: This is my cpu cooler
RambJoe: i have thermalright true black with two 38mm fans :P
MPX: You clock thru software? Not good man :S The only way to do it is thru the Bios
RambJoe: no i'm using bios atm
RambJoe: overdrive was for windows
MPX: RambJoe, http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/02/ocz-reveals-consumer-level-revodrive-pcie-ssd-blazing-fast-hsdl/
MPX: This is why you should wait buying an ssd :)
RambJoe: :|
RambJoe: 480GB
MPX: ...the solution combines an industry standard SAS connector with an OCZ-built PCIe board in order to enable transfer rates as high as 20Gbit/sec....
MPX: =d
RambJoe: damnn
MPX: I got a Corsair 64 GB startup disk
MPX: 2 tb storage
RambJoe: how long till thsoe things drop in price?
MPX: Not long I think
MPX: wait until the end of 2010
MPX: Anyway, I'm just waiting for the Amiga days to return :D
RambJoe: http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/03/microsoft-updating-live-app-suite-declares-windows-better-than/ lol
GNU\colossus: unless we get rid of SATA and allow for raw flash to be attached to our boxen, SSD innovation won't get us that far, anyway
RambJoe: has google got the 1gbps isp up yet
MPX: I donno
MPX: I'm getting 50/50 next month :D
RambJoe: i have 20 down 1 up :(
Daekdroom: I have 3 down 0,5 up D:
Daekdroom: well, actually it is 640kbps up xD
MPX: I have 10 down and 0.5 up
MPX: :P Hate the small up's
Daekdroom: Yeah.
Daekdroom: Any kind of P2P will just skyrocket your ping
RambJoe: uk suck we're meant to get like 40/100 download by 2012 or something
RambJoe: when everyone else is getting 1gbps
MPX: We got 100/100 here
MPX: We've had that for quite some time
MPX: And you know, by 2012 the world ends anyway :D
RambJoe: lol
RambJoe: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7820988.stm wtf is this
MPX: Sounds like something my gf would buy
RambJoe: lol
MPX: Man, I can never forget walking into the computer store when I was a kid, and there was shelfs dedicated to amiga software and hardware mmmm
MPX: I'll always live on that dream :)
MPX: In the same shopping mall there were arcade machines, mostly by Sega aswell :D
RambJoe: lol
RambJoe: i love this song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eKB5Yqr2ae4
MPX: Seriusly though, I walk into the same shop today, they only sell Playstation and Xbox 360 games, a small number of pc games, and somewhat other things
MPX: I hate the lack of choice
RambJoe: the pc section in my local game is like 2 foot wide
MPX: Yeah I know, it's the same all over
RambJoe: dont they think pc retail market will be gone by next year beacuse of steam lol
MPX: I don't know
MPX: What I DO wan't though is the monopoly the windows market has to dissapear
MPX: Amiga to rise again, sega to release dreamcast 2
MPX: I want to be able to go there and pick up a cheap copy of Ubuntu you know :P
RambJoe: no linux to rise
MPX: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9mg6wrYCT9Q
MPX: Linux is already on the highway, and it's getting there
RambJoe: portal still alive
MPX: It's amazing these days how these alternative operating systems are picking up pace
MPX: with USB and Wifi support....and the best part? Mesa, with accelerated graphics
RambJoe: fuck flash crashed
Daekdroom: The best part being Mesa?
Daekdroom: What did you smoke?
RambJoe: mesa on linux?
RambJoe: black mesa?
RambJoe: steam for linux confirmed :D
MPX: Daekdroom ?
Daekdroom: Mesa is nowhere near being the best part D:
MPX: http://www.mesa3d.org/
Daekdroom: Maybe when Gallium goes mainstream.
MPX: Daekdroom, true
MPX: Either way, what I'm trying to say is that it isn't that long ago, most hardware configs were unsupported on xyz operating system
RambJoe: does xfce load faster than gnome?
MPX: Not to talk about wifi
MPX: RambJoe, yes
RambJoe: what do you use?
MPX: (It don't matter to me though ner ner)
MPX: Gnome.....ssd remember?
RambJoe: oh lol
RambJoe: my pc probably takes longer to check USB devices than yours does to boot :(
Tazer: that is
Tazer: enormously tragic
MPX: Yeah....sounds like a kernel problem rather then gnome though
MPX: Hey Tazer :D
MPX: Did ya hear? Steam for linux confirmed!
Tazer: Yo~
Tazer: omgomgomgomg
RambJoe: i mean in the bios post
Tazer: Again!?
MPX: Haha No just kidding again
Tazer: >w>
RambJoe: befroe even grub loads
Tazer: will cut you
MPX: =)
MPX: RambJoe, Oh....check your bios settings?
MPX: Update your bios?
RambJoe: um
RambJoe: can you disable all those checks
MPX: Well, there should be an option for fast boot :P
RambJoe: i think its inititalizing usb controllers or something like that
RambJoe: i think that as enabled lol
RambJoe: brb going to chck
RambJoe: system policy prevents rstarting the system when other users are logged in lol wut
MPX: And off he went, never to be seen again...
MPX: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CmGUzuSW5PU&feature=related nf nf nf nf
MPX: welcome back
MPX: Figure it out?
RambJoe: um it was set to boot from cd drive first lol
MPX: :)
MPX: Also, update your bio
Tazer: the saddest thing
MPX: s
Tazer: but you fixed it, yay
RambJoe: and i had the image thing up instead of post
Tazer: questions
Tazer: any update on your steam post?
RambJoe: another thing though is compiz doesn't load properly
RambJoe: like sometimes i have no bars on the windows and no shadows lol
RambJoe: http://i.imgur.com/NRxay.png
RambJoe: i have to alt f2 then compiz --replace to fix it
MPX: make a startup in your sessions dialouge :p
RambJoe: lol
RambJoe: well sometimes it works
RambJoe: sometimes it doesn't
RambJoe: its like compiz has half loaded as cube and stuff still works
Daekdroom: That means it might have crashed
RambJoe: steam is on my synaptic :|
RambJoe: sTeam provides a technical platform which allows groups of students, lecturers and any other groups to construct and arrange their individual and cooperative learning and working space.
RambJoe: http://bpoilnews.com/gulf-oil-spill/bp-oil-spill-suggestion-box-oil-spill-suggestion-hotline-now-open/ :|
Azalyn: how about "stop failing"
Azalyn: how's that for a suggestion
GNU\colossus: hehe
GNU\colossus: you gotta let them know I think!
Azalyn: the government(s) should have stormed in and assumed control *immediately* when this happened...
RambJoe: i wanna watch the steam lol
RambJoe: http://www.bp.com/liveassets/bp_internet/globalbp/globalbp_uk_english/homepage/STAGING/local_assets/bp_homepage/html/rov_stream.html
RambJoe: it doesn't work
Azalyn: this is just unacceptable
RambJoe: how big is the hole
s_20: Azalyn: and how do you suggest that works?
s_20: obama uses his magic anti oil wand?
s_20: blaming him for this now is ridiculous
GNU\colossus: I'd just slam BP executives' bodies into the leak at ludicrous speed
GNU\colossus: and I wouldn't stop until the leaking is over
asraniel: Azalyn: there is nothing the american governement can do, they don't have the tools / experts to fix that. the only hope is BP itself. and the fault is defenitively not in the current american government
RambJoe: winder id they'll go bank corrupt lol
RambJoe: from the press of the button
RambJoe: it takes 2 minutes 36 for the gnome panel to show up lol
RambJoe: and i alsa get errors like ata5: softreset failed
Daekdroom: Good lord. All those PPA's finally bit me..
Daekdroom: Now Transmission freezes when I use a magnet link and Software Channels freezes whenever I touch the repo list :P
ryan22: lol
viridari: wishes a pox on corporate accountants
cmol: Hi. Do anybody know if there's any official steam on linux news from valve?
monreal: yes. there is none
asraniel: none at all
cmol: Damn.. I hoped I was wrong
monreal: you hoped phoronix was right :)
cmol: I just wanna see something from valve before jumping up and down ;)
Tazer: I'm still waiting~
Tazer: All bets placed on Linux tag
Tazer: and E3
cmol: Uhh.. E3! Did you read that GaDoS removed valves presentation?
DonScott: It think the surprise at E3 will be Half Life 3.......but it'd be cool if they throw a linux plug in too.
DonScott: I not It
cmol: Half life 2 episode 3 maybe?
DonScott: Valve has a lot of things on their plate right now , but they are rather ambitious... so I think it's more a matter of when for a linux client not if.
cmol: That sounds reasonable.. And they are the only big gaming company, doing anything for linux, so lets just hope :)
monreal: well, valve had a near-complete mac port of hl1 at some point and did not release it, some 10 years later they now pushed steam to osx... never say never?
cmol: I just want to get rid of that xp partition and play games on linux!
ryan22: feel lucky. i have a mac and can't really triple boot :P
cmol: Can't grub do that? ;)
ryan22: the efi bootloader has issues with grub
cmol: Ahh.. I really don't know much mac :
cmol: :)
ryan22: its a dark art
ryan22: used by the cult of steve jobs
cmol: I'd rather have a lenovo with me in a fight than a mac :P
ryan22: you could use the shiny
ryan22: perhaps kill some ants
cmol: dying just by seeing it! :O
cmol: well.. Gotta go practice.. Those drum aren't playing themself.. Bye :)
Azalyn: s_20 & asraniel : way to completely miss the point... what makes you think i am even focusing on the US government? i am saying that BP was too incompetent to be left in charge when this problem affects everyone. even if someone else took control, the company's own experts would still be there, the company just wouldn't have the authority.
Azalyn: and if you think for a second that there is no one else on the planet outside of the company's staff that has the knowledge to deal with this problem, then that is ridiculous.
Azalyn: bp was incompetent enough to not have emergency valves in place to shut it off in case of an emergency to begin with, why should anyone trust their "expertise" now?
asraniel: i would not critizise BP for how they try to fix it now. i think they do their best, it's also in their interest. BUT, they made TONS of errors before, and for that they should be punished hard
Azalyn: and i didn't even mention obama. i don't give a shit about him. the usa isn't the center of the fucking universe. heh
DonScott: since when ?
DonScott: lol
mastertheknife: Girls.. am i the only one who finds the phone calling games annoying?
mastertheknife: their*
MPX: mastertheknife, gkr.s
Wiplash: phone calling? like prank calling? Call the police that'l stop em
MPX: *girls are the biggest nerds of them all
MPX: Life is just a game to them :P
mastertheknife: Wiplash: lol no, but have them call you completely in random intervals, and if you call yourself, they might not answer
mastertheknife: weird games
mastertheknife: MPX: Seems like they are too confused
Wiplash: well dont pick up in the frequency that they dont
Wiplash: or ignore it entirely and have another beer
mastertheknife: Treat them mean and keep them keen works?
Wiplash: not really treating them mean, just doing your thing belive me you dont want them to start thinking your at their beck and call :/ you have things to doo too
Wiplash: (even if you dont)
mastertheknife: yeah..
DonScott: I think the real question is " should you stay with her or look for another ?"
Wiplash: another then you can start as you mean to carry on and dont let them get into that practice!!
mastertheknife: heh its actually complicated
mastertheknife: lets say it was a girl from work and we used to sit and talk all the time so when i left we both said we'll stay in touch, she used to call me about every week until few weeks ago, which got me wondering what went wrong, but girls, you can never know i guess
sageX: hello all
mastertheknife: hi sageX
sageX: <3 linux
sageX: is there a official date for steam linux
sageX: yet?
mastertheknife: lol i wish
mastertheknife: probably not likely any time soon
sageX: :,
mastertheknife: Who knows, maybe valve cancelled the client
sageX: I wish they would just release every game with linux compatibility
sageX: researches
mastertheknife: sageX: as you probably heard, valve took the files down, they made them forbidden
mastertheknife: we cant tell now if they are working on a client or nuking it
sageX: oh
sageX: the only way to know is to probably call the devs
MPX: mastertheknife, perhaps shes waiting for you to call her
MPX: You know, theres no fun having a friend which isn't a friend back at you
MPX: Friendship is about give and take
sageX: lol
mastertheknife: MPX: The thing is, last time we talked, she had to go quickly, so i waited 3 days and called her back, no answer. waited 1 week and sent her happy holiday SMS with "when'll you find some time to call?" i guess i was being a little pushy, but i really like talking to her
MPX: Then pick up the damn phone now
mastertheknife: MPX: "when you'll find some time to call?" my bad
MPX: stop being whiney, you are a man right? :p
mastertheknife: MPX: I am not afraid of calling, i just cant be bothered to chase girls
mastertheknife: MPX: anyways that SMS was on 20th may, ever since didn't hear anything from her.. maybe its her so jealous boyfriend found out or something
mastertheknife: she'll probably call someday, girls are like that.. when you mess up their expections, they'll become confused and worried and eventually call
MPX: mastertheknife, you bet your ass it's her boyfriend finding out
MPX: I can guarantee you that :p
mastertheknife: I doubt it
MPX: Oh, I've been there tons of times
mastertheknife: I met this guy in this one year i know her, he's terrible, he is the very jealous type, he doesnt let her even open a facebook account
MPX: It's always the boyfriend putting the lid on things if a girl dissapears
MPX: Well there you have it. Now he forbids her to talk to you
MPX: BTW, from the Get/playdeb.net blog : João Pinto said...
MPX: We have no estimate for the site to be available.
MPX: We are looking for a new hosting sponsorship.
MPX: June 1, 2010 7:18 AM
MPX: :(
mastertheknife: MPX: but when we talk its never on weekends, and they 99% of the time only meet in weekends because they live far from each other
MPX: Well
MPX: If he has forbidden her, perhaps she'll honour it
MPX: I've lost plenty of friends that way
ryan22: devs: feel free to email me your package updates until getdeb comes back up. i'll add them to my repo
thomashc: hmm
mastertheknife: MPX: I dont really like talking to gils with a boyfriend, but she was an exception. If i didnt know she likes me and that shes not happy with her current boyfriend, i wouldn't bother staying in touch with her
thomashc: OpenSuSE is really nice - except KDM doesn't start automatically...
sageX: lolz
ryan22: hmm. why not?
sageX: you are doing it wrong
thomashc: Dunno why
Nevtus: mastertheknife: I know you're not going to like this advice, but I suggest you just forget about her.
MPX: I got the same issue with my GF mastertheknife
thomashc: I had to do the livecd with safe settings for it to boot
mastertheknife: Nevtus: Its actually a very good advice ;)
MPX: She spies on my facebook and Whatnot. Tries to forbid me to speak to some girls.
thomashc: now the install boots fine but I have to masnually start kdm
sageX: looooooool
mastertheknife: MPX: Personally i think that relationships need trust, and if there's no trust, whats the point?
MPX: But I tell her that they were friends with me before her, so she really hasnt got anything to say about it
MPX: Exactly mastertheknife
MPX: Anybody have ecomstation 2.0? not the rc but the final?
mastertheknife: MPX: Usually it comes from self-esteem, causing him\her to worry about losing that person and eventually becoming a jealous type
mastertheknife: from low self-esteem*
sageX: +9 self esteem
MPX: Yeah mastertheknife I know
mastertheknife: just like that girl.. no why she's staying with him, i guess its because its not easy to breakup after 3 years
MPX: But then again, I understand my GF's trust issues. I made a mistake once, so I can understand her
Nevtus: mastertheknife: do you want her to drop him for you?
mastertheknife: Nevtus: No not really, i dont think its a good idea to encourage someone to drop his\her gf\bf, just wanted to stay in touch in case that happens someday, because i know those kind of relationships eventually die
Nevtus: that's what facebook is for ;)
MPX: lol
MPX: The man speaks the truth
mastertheknife: Nevtus: The person is so jealous that when me, her and some other friends from work went to celeb my release, he also came over because he cant trust her
mastertheknife: Nevtus: Yeah, but what if her boyfriend doesnt allow her to have facebook
MPX: Then really, she should dump him
MPX: The instant a boyfriend or girlfriend claims ownership, it's time to move on
mastertheknife: they're together for 3 years
MPX: 3 years isn't a long time
mastertheknife: If she had facebook i wouldn't need the phone at all i think
mastertheknife: facebook is an awesome invention to stay in touch
mastertheknife: MPX: Yeah, but i think after 3 years people are so used to live together that it may be not easy to breakup, or she is not aware of how bad the situation is
MPX: Actually
MPX: It's when you get so used to living together
MPX: That sex is something you have less and less
MPX: and love is something that belonged the first year you were together :P
MPX: It might be easier then you think :P
viridari: if "her boyfriend doesnt allow her to" then 'rm -rf /dev/boyfriend'
Nevtus: the real question is, would you win in a fight with the boyfriend?
MPX: viridari, *laughs*
MPX: sudo apt-get remove --purge current-boyfriend
Nevtus: ping new-girlfriend
mastertheknife: Nevtus: why to even try, i just wanted to stay in touch in cas she dumps him or something
viridari: a boyfriend like that would never be a Ubuntu user. try yast.
MPX: rm -r ~/.boyfriend-leftovers
Nevtus: mastertheknife: wasn't serious
viridari: finger /dev/girlfriend
MPX: haha oh oh
viridari: mount /dev/girlfriend /media/wang
mastertheknife: I wonder if she'll ever call again.. hopefully she will, but maybe by the time shes does that ill be not interested already or taken
MPX: viridari, you are too funny :D
MPX: mastertheknife, well, that's life
viridari: just don't probe her scsi port on the first date
mastertheknife: viridari: LOL
Nevtus: mastertheknife: if she doesn't want to call you, there is no point pursuing her. She obviously already knows how you feel (she's probably known all along)
MPX: mmm yeah
mastertheknife: yeah she probably noticed hehe
MPX: It's easy to figure out if a person likes you
MPX: Well, I grew up with 5 older sisters (thank god every day that I didn
viridari: SYN SYN/ACK ACK ACK ACK ACK ACK ACK ACK FIN FIN/ACK
MPX: 'nt turn out gay)
Nevtus: you mean like stop responding and watching them bombard your phone with calls and texts? :P
viridari: I really need to stop reading man pages
MPX: Nevtus, lol
Nevtus: MPX: why would having sisters turn you gay?
mastertheknife: Nevtus: Yeah, if thats the case then yeah theres no point
viridari: and what's wrong with being gay? I'm straight as they come but my gay friends have all the fun and never have to worry about getting someone pregnant
MPX: I didn't grow up with no parents :P I didn't ONCE get dressed up in girlie clothes and I did not ONCE get put on makeup
MPX: Hey, those are your words viridari
MPX: I didn't say anything negative about being gay
MPX: I'm glad I'm not though :D
Nevtus: that wouldn't make you gay
MPX: Well, nevtus, I'm pretty sure that If I liked dressing up in girlie clothes and wearing makeup
MPX: that would not make me gay, but that would be an indication of me being gay
viridari: not really
mastertheknife: however, she has birthday in about 15-16 days, a birthday that i sadly forgot\missed last year. think i should be nice and send happy birthday SMS?
Nevtus: nope, it would mean you liked dressing as a woman
viridari: cross dressing isn't linked to sexual preference
Nevtus: yup
MPX: In my opinion, it is :p
Nevtus: also in your case, you were frightened of your sisters forcing you to cross dress
Nevtus: you wouldn't suddenly like it if you didn't already
mastertheknife: I dont have any sisters heh
MPX: Not really, they didn't want to
MPX: For us, that was not a natural thing for sisters to do with their brothers :P
mastertheknife: sometimes i wish i had a sister, too many boys in the house and mom barely coping with all the mess we do hehe
Nevtus: mastertheknife: sent her one text on the birthday and leave it at that
Nevtus: facebook would have been really handy in this situation...
mastertheknife: Nevtus: thanks.. yeah, probably
MPX: I'm glad I had sisters....I got to peek into the insane world called women
mastertheknife: we're 4 brothers, it feels kind of boring
MPX: Hmmm alot of fighting I guess
MPX: competition and whatnot?
mastertheknife: All the time! the house is a mess :)
mastertheknife: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6oAFlPLGA8
mastertheknife: good old song
MPX: mastertheknife, classic :)
mastertheknife: 1983 :(
mastertheknife: :)*
dandel: I need someone who has left 4 dead and a fairly recent video card (along with steam) to help test a patch
mastertheknife: dandel: I got L4D installed and 8800GT
MPX: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CB17uWuBrL0 this too mastertheknife
mastertheknife: dandel: 64bit gentoo
dandel: good :)
dandel: i got a peformance patch
mastertheknife: dandel: L4D is barely playable here because its locked to dx9 mode. In windows i can play it 1680x1050 all highest, but here i play 1024x768 all low windowed to get acceptable 20-50 fps
dandel: http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/444150/
mastertheknife: dandel: SWEET
mastertheknife: dandel: is there a way i can benchmark?
mastertheknife: dandel: before and after?
dandel: yea
dandel: build latest source
dandel: play
mastertheknife: dandel: I tried to do a timedemo but the game crashes when playing it
dandel: and patch
dandel: i use the first level as a test
dandel: namely the one where you start on the roof
mastertheknife: oh you just stand where it spawns you and watch fps?
mastertheknife: Yeah, the rooftop finale
mastertheknife: oh, no not that one
mastertheknife: no mercy first one then
viridari: will it run on 167MHz sun4u arch? with a serial console? :)
dandel: i get a solid 30+fps
viridari: I wonder what kind of spf that would get (fps is the wrong metric)
dandel: only bug i see is when i have multi-core rendering enabled
mastertheknife: dandel: is it possible to only build the affected dll\dlls in wine rather than recompiling all wine?
mastertheknife: dandel: also, yeah, L4D freezes all the time, so annoying
dandel: yes
dandel: i don't see any freezes
MPX: I get 60 fps anyway so
MPX: :P
ryan22: dandel: perhaps try winetricks. that always gives me a nice speed boost
mastertheknife: it just feels a little jerky
mastertheknife: i'm on wine 1.1.44
MPX: No seriously though, online play, that's when it drops for me
dandel: 800x600 with only an occasional jerk
mastertheknife: dandel: thats what i mean, occasional jerk
dandel: one sec, i'll do a timedemo
mastertheknife: MPX: that song is hardcore lol
mastertheknife: dandel: for what version of wine is that patch?
MPX: Talking about hardcore : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBV-FH2_SXc :P
dandel: latest git
dandel: 1.2-rc3(-ish)
mastertheknife: oh.. i prefer not to install wine manually to my system but use gentoo to maintain packages, so ill probably patch the files manually for my version (I do it by installing the ebuild manually in steps, modifying the source between the unpacking and compiling stages)
dandel: i'll use the guru3d benchmark
MPX: gah...un7-zippin' 60 | 1.2 GB files split up into 17 parts each...takes alot of times
MPX: *-s = Time
mastertheknife: the thing is, when i play a timedemo, the game crashes when its done playing
mastertheknife: and it doesnt save the fps to the stats file or cosole
mastertheknife: i guess just spawning in No Mercy and watching the fps without moving should also work
mastertheknife: i'm now updating to wine 1.2_rc1 from 1.1.44, after that ill measure fps, then apply your patch (hopefully not manually) and then measure fps again
dandel: just did a recording
dandel: 30+ fps with only 1 or 2 sudden stutters.
dandel: and that's from the start of the map to the safe room
dandel: and i have all settings as far as it can go
mastertheknife: dandel: does wine attempt to use OpenGL 3.X features and extensions to make dx9 games more playable?
dandel: yes.
dandel: that's part of what my patch does
dandel: it recreates the texture within video memory
mastertheknife: Hmm yeah i see that you added an extension
dandel: srgb framebuffer
mastertheknife: dandel: wow that opengl function you added seems complicated, where did you learn OpenGL? :)
dandel: just then
dandel: I didn't know any opengl (or very little) before that :P
mastertheknife: interesting
dandel: anyways, it needs to have better debugging and error checks added
dandel: lemme ask ya, when you have the sudden lag, is it when a swarm of zombies arrives?
dandel: I got one or two frames of lag when they arrived, but not enough to drop the frame rate enough to cause too much problems (max settings of course)
dandel: anyways, the script only recreates the pixel buffer object, and texture while avoiding the transfer from graphics memory to system memory and back
dandel: anyways, this patch can apply (manually) to the version of wine you have
dandel: and all you haft to do is rebuild the dll
wao: ttp://mozillalabs.com/conceptseries/2010/06/01/introducing-sudosocial-me/
wao: ff
christian_lappy: dandel: wine d3d speedup ?
dandel: yes
dandel: for source games (like left 4 dead)
christian_lappy: how much :-) ?
dandel: double
christian_lappy: +100% ?
dandel: it avoids copying to system memory (huge performance boost)
christian_lappy: your kidding ?
christian_lappy: does it need a special ogl version ?
christian_lappy: when will it be mainline ?
dandel: requires pbo
dandel: dunno, haven't found the right person :(
christian_lappy: dandel: juliard or stefand i would guess
christian_lappy: dandel: and pbo is what ?
RambJoe: steam for linux confirmed?
dandel: I brought this up in the correct channel.
dandel: pbo as in pixel buffer object
christian_lappy: i only knwo fbo ;-)
christian_lappy: dandel: so my gtx260 should be able to handle this
dandel: yes
dandel: and do give it a try
dandel: I've only tested against an ati card tho
christian_lappy: with 10.5 ?
dandel: yes
dandel: i'm getting a solid 30+fps with all settings maxed out
christian_lappy: 10.5 spped things up a LOT in wine it seems
dandel: but i haft to disable the threaded rendering because volume buffers are not implemented.
RambJoe: "support for Linux would prove beyond the shadow of a doubt they haven't a clue about what their fan base wants."
RambJoe: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?p=15255875#post15255875
RambJoe: RAGE
dandel: i'd much rather trade portal 2 for linux support :D
christian_lappy: me too
RambJoe: lol
RambJoe: im still raging at what he asid
christian_lappy: i would trade in EA for that
dandel: I'd rather see EA crash and burn.
dandel: with no sign of recovery
RambJoe: ahhh im being infested with sigs saying unable to mount floppy
RambJoe: now why is their a floppy in my fstab
Nevtus: RambJoe: that MADDOGGE guy is an idiot. He's constantly trolling the linux threads
RambJoe: :(
RambJoe: microsoft fanboy?
Nevtus: I think he's just a fanboy of ignorance
RambJoe: the other stuff in his post is also dumb
RambJoe: since when would people not like a new game
RambJoe: the only bit hes right about was L4D2 and that was becaues it was just too soon
MPX: When is e3 again?
ryan22: ya i still believe valve should wait a year until the apis get sorted out
Nevtus: in about two weeks
Nevtus: mid June'ish
MPX: and Linuxtag?
ryan22: the last thing we need is valve abandoning linux prematurely due to difficult maintenance
ryan22: then no game company will support linux for years
RambJoe: did i get netsplitted or something
RambJoe: what did i miss lol
Nevtus: ryan22: what makes you think Valve are having such problems?
ryan22: i see all the problems the allegro guys are having with pulseaudio
MPX: I have NO problem with pulseaudio
MPX: And even if there are, why is this Valve's concern?
ryan22: which is the framework most native game use
Nevtus: no it isn't
ryan22: pulseaudio only supports 70% of alsa functions
MPX: AFAIK, all linux apps and games, use whatever framework is available
ryan22: trust me i tested all of them
MPX: if I have ESD, it will use ESD
ryan22: sdl has issues with pulse as well
MPX: but then again...AFAIK
ryan22: i had to tell it use OSS to get a bunch of emulators to work
ryan22: even with bare alsa tbh
ryan22: these things need to be solved, as they wont be tolerated by companies spending millions on development
Nevtus: Valve aren't stupid and neither are linux users. If pulseaudio support isn't working Valve just recommends replacing it with ALSA or OSS
ryan22: im afraid they'll just give up
ryan22: if you remove pulse on ubuntu, you lose your volume controls
Nevtus: silly ubuntu
ryan22: as ubuntu has hardcoded pulse in for the per-app volume controls
RambJoe: wut why are they having problems
ryan22: RambJoe: https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel-discuss/2010-May/011343.html
ryan22: they dont care if games work
ryan22: they only care if their networked audio works so they can stream music to their kitchen
xtcx: I am booting SimplyMepis 7's livecd
xtcx: lol
RambJoe: :(
ryan22: cuz the pulseaudio devs dont play games, so its not a priority
RambJoe: so pulse audio doesn't work on games at all
ryan22: not really on native games
Nevtus: why are you acting like ubuntu is the only distro?
MPX: That's weird
MPX: You know
MPX: Enemy territory Quake wars LOVES my pulseaudio
RambJoe: its the easiet to use and will bring in the most new linux users
Modplan: eery native game I've tried has generally worked fine with pulseaudio
ryan22: and fedora, mandrake and opensuse use pulse as well
ryan22: its cuz alot of games use sudio for timing
ryan22: *audio
Modplan: "PA is happy to grant high latency by default because doing so is more
MPX: And oh...Heroes of might and magic 3....and Soldier of fortune...to name a few
ryan22: alot of them work yes
Modplan: friendly to lower power consumption. Various pulse clients (whether
Modplan: frameworks like SDL or OpenAL-soft) have been fixed to properly
Modplan: specify latency requirements and act accordingly.
Modplan: "
MPX: In fact, I have no problem what so ever with pulseaudio
Modplan: from your link
ryan22: they havent
Nevtus: tbh I'd be surprised if Canonical wouldn't jump at the chance to have a professional relationship with Valve. I could certainly see it happening and if pulseaudio isn't working it'd be fixed or dropped
ryan22: canonical is barely organized enough to do anything asside from making pretty menus
MPX: I agree Nevtus
RambJoe: i wonder id they already are working with them
MPX: ryan22, now you're trolling
ryan22: well they didn't contact me at all about improving the accesibility for my uni rollout of ubuntu
MPX: Oh boohoo :P
ryan22: i had to go to the gnome guys
ryan22: man its important
Modplan: for you
ryan22: these relationships are important
Modplan: not necessarily for canonical
ryan22: if trent adported linux, then a bunch od unis in canda might follow
ryan22: snowball effect
Modplan: I would hazard a guess they care about google and dell than they do one uni
Modplan: care more*
ryan22: the unis train the students how to use their software
MPX: I heard Mark shuttleworth was rich, So I sent him and E-Mail, asking him to donate me 10 dollars.
MPX: Ofcourse that would be Pocketchange! I never heard from them again!
ryan22: its why apple targets the edu market so heavily
MPX: I think this is lame because this would have an snowball effect which would gain Cannonical alot of PR
ryan22: you cant them while they're young
MPX: I am the most important person in my life. Just sayin'
Nevtus: apple targets that market because students are stupid and rich
ryan22: *you get them while they're young
Modplan: you can't get most unis to switch to something most students won't have an idea why they need to use
xtcx: Nevtus, umm not always
ryan22: im also working with the teachers union in ontario
xtcx: most are decently intelligent and poor...
ryan22: well going to
ryan22: im rounding up funding to get the accesibility situation improved
Nevtus: xtcx: I'm a student and poor. I was generalising somewhat, but that's what Steve Jobs sees when he looked at the student market
xtcx: lol
xtcx: look, it's a company
xtcx: the OBJECTIVE is to SELL
xtcx: if they try to do that
xtcx: get over it
xtcx: :P
ryan22: http://mail.gnome.org/archives/gnome-accessibility-list/2010-May/msg00057.html
xtcx: the whole point of business is to make profit
Nevtus: xtcx: you like the idea of a money making company influencing learning educations?
ryan22: lol well thats why ive decided to start my company to take on these issues myself
xtcx: Nevtus, People should know more than one system I think.
xtcx: and then
ryan22: canonical was unwilling to help, so ill have to organize myself
xtcx: it's YOUR system
Nevtus: I agree. I never said otherwise
xtcx: so what you want with it
xtcx: if you want to take a Mac and put freedos on it
xtcx: be my guess
xtcx: just because they sell macs doesn't mean you are locked into one way of doing things
ryan22: ^man you have no idea the pain of getting a mac to dual boot
Nevtus: macs are nothing special. they are just overpriced IBM PC clones with a closed source *nix
ryan22: with linux
Modplan: ryan22 it'd probably be better not approaching canonical specifically and address Ubuntu project as a whole
xtcx: ryan22, yeah
MPX: Actually ryan22
xtcx: but it camn be done
ryan22: ive decided to address the gnome project as a whole
MPX: It might just have been that your mail got filtered
xtcx: and if you dont like how its done
ryan22: ubuntu is too tiny
xtcx: code it yourself
MPX: Or something went wrong
xtcx: :P
MPX: It does not entitle you to be an ass about cannonical
MPX: Just sayin'
ryan22: ya im just considering about the project
Modplan: SHUTTLEWORTH IS STALIN JOBS IN DISGUISE
xtcx: lol?
Modplan: HE IS BUYING OPEN SOURCE AWAY FROM THE BEARDS
xtcx: ROFL
ryan22: stuff like enabling nouveau by default is really irking me
ryan22: ive seen around 20 ppl bitching about that issue
ryan22: they arent making careful decisions and people are starting to think ubuntu problems are linux problems
Modplan: it's not like there's much of a choice. Nvidia dropped their basic driver support
GNU\colossus: don't buy shitvidia - problem solved.
ryan22: use vesa?
MPX: eeek nvidia blæææh
Modplan: nouveau generally provides a better experience
xtcx: ryan22, 20 people is actually relatively few
MPX: I had to bake my friends nvidia onboard 8400 Go chip yesterday
ryan22: its better than a blank screen
MPX: :D
ryan22: xtcx: personally
MPX: It's amazing what an oven can do with a chip
Modplan: and better than vesa
ryan22: it enough thats theres guide on how to blacklist nouveau
xtcx: lol
ryan22: i mean maybe in a year it would be apporiate
ryan22: but the justification was they needed to test it so the decided to apply it to everyone using ubuntu
Modplan: in the mean time you'd be stuck with crappier vesa
xtcx: thing is, 20 people having issues is NOT THAT many when you look at the size of the ubuntu project
ryan22: its not just 20 ppl
xtcx: 20, 200, doesn't matter
xtcx: that's still, realtively, tiny
ryan22: even so, would it have hurt them to just have waited on nouveau
ryan22: so it didnt black screen on say 2% of ppl
xtcx: but in the long run
Modplan: but then nouveau might be just as crappy because that 2% of people that had problems would never have been found
xtcx: it will be much better
xtcx: Modplan, exactly
ryan22: buit are they fixing that problem
ryan22: no theyre leaving it there for 6 months
Modplan: well, presumably bugs are being reported and nouveau guys are working on it
ryan22: so for six months 2% of users will have ubuntu black screen on them
ryan22: it would be okay if they could update the drivers
ryan22: but they cant
ryan22: because ubuntu only updates every 6 months
Modplan: in which case you're asking nouveau to be perfect
ryan22: im asking it on to black screen
Modplan: for "5 of users
ryan22: im asking for it to be maybe presented as a boot option
xtcx1: fucking net
Modplan: %2*
xtcx1: ryan22, that's because ubuntu is STABLE, if they updated that, it could break other things
ryan22: but is nouveau stable
xtcx1: for most, yes
ryan22: i wouldnt call sfowatre that black screened for 2% of users stable
xtcx1: Ubuntu can't sorry about that 2%
xtcx1: Ubuntu has to worry about that 98 %
ryan22: and what did the 98% gain
ryan22: 98% of that 98% will just install the binary drivers
xtcx1: why would they if the free ones work?
ryan22: but do the free ones work
Modplan: lol
xtcx1: yes they do
ryan22: have you see the screens of nouveau glithing on compiz
xtcx1: for 98% of people, THEY WORK
ryan22: no they do
ryan22: nt
Modplan: "Aliens don't exist."
Modplan: BUT DO THEY EXIST!!
xtcx1: ryan22, in my experience proprietary drivers suck period
MPX: I agree with Modplan and Nevtus and stuff
xtcx1: lol
Modplan: the issue is it isn't an easy choice either way
xtcx1: ryan22, for you I recommend CentOS or Debian Etch
ryan22: http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?p=1329713
xtcx1: so there is NO new software that breaks for 2% of people
xtcx1: :)
ryan22: thats not acceptable
xtcx1: ryan22, you have to realize
Modplan: you choose crappy vesa that gives you bugger all, noiveau that gives you some awesomeness at expense of that %2, or break the law and go for binary
ryan22: well i believe that the apps should be up-to-date
xtcx1: people come to furms when they have issues
xtcx1: if they dotn have issues
xtcx1: they do not post about it on forums
xtcx1: lol
ryan22: Modplan: 98% of the nouveau users are just going to install the nvidia binary drivers anyways
Modplan: not necessarily
xtcx1: ryan22, how do you know that?
ryan22: and the other 2% will just use nouveau
ryan22: http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?p=1329713
xtcx1: are you 98% of nouveau users?
xtcx1: no
xtcx1: ryan22, you posted that already
xtcx1: I repeat
xtcx1: people come to forums to COMPLAIN
ryan22: all im saying is its fine for nouveau to be INCLUDED with ubuntu
xtcx1: no one ever goes to a forum to praise
xtcx1: they look stupid
Modplan: or they get flamed
ryan22: but it better damn well not blank screen if its default
GNU\colossus: I did not install nvidia, as noveau was working perfectly fine.
xtcx1: ryan22, it doesnt
xtcx1: for 98% of people
GNU\colossus: nouveau*
ryan22: man this is a production distribution
Modplan: in the same way %2 of people are undoubtedly unhappy with binary
xtcx1: with all of the computers available
ryan22: it isnt sidux
ryan22: or arch
xtcx1: 2% breakge is pretty damn good
Modplan: well we're sorry the universe isn;t perfect
xtcx1: *breakage
ryan22: no its not
Modplan: but it's not black & white issue
GNU\colossus: xtcx1: 2% of nvidia users, mind you
Modplan: it's a trade off between different isssues, costs and benefits
xtcx1: GNU
xtcx1: * GNU
xtcx1: wtf
xtcx1: & GNU\colossus that's huge
xtcx1: lol
ryan22: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Six_Sigma
xtcx1: there are a lot of people using nvidia
MPX: Sadly
ryan22: i believe the radeon drivers should be made default'
ryan22: cuz they work and dont have glitches
xtcx1: ryan22, hmm?
Modplan: except that they do
xtcx1: the radeon drivers are default
xtcx1: seeing how I get 3D on the livecd
ryan22: they are
xtcx1: and compiz
ryan22: but nouveau doesnt properly work with compriz
ryan22: btw do you realize what a 2% failure rate means
Modplan: %98 of people are happy
MPX: Yes, that you should switch to the better, Ati!
xtcx1: 2% failure rate makes it better than windows.
MPX: Or, 3DFX :D
ryan22: if it was a web server, it would be done for 1 min each hour
ryan22: 1*down
xtcx1: ryan22, I'm not talkign per machine
xtcx1: I'm talking all machines
xtcx1: and also
GNU\colossus: nicht alles was hinkt ist ein vergleich!
xtcx1: why the hell would a web server need compiz?
AdrianBroher: hrhr, wie wahr, wie wahr
ryan22: well if your web server has an nvidia card that blank screens
ryan22: bam you cant use ubuntu
MPX: If I was to run a webserver I'd use CLI...but that's me
xtcx1: ryan22, you do realize video driver's arent used for a CLI system right?
GNU\colossus: ryan22: so? I admin it via serial console access initially, and via SSH exclusively afterwards.
sageX: lolz
ryan22: didnt ubuntu remove vesa-only mode in lucid
ryan22: on the live cd
sageX: a gpu on a server
sageX: LOLZ
ryan22: so you cant even run the live installer if nouveu blank screen
GNU\colossus: tough luck
ryan22: sageX: well you need someway to use the install
GNU\colossus: buy some usable hardware for your server next time
xtcx1: ryan22, I believe it's an option if you access the optiosn menu
GNU\colossus: not shitvida crap
MPX: Hellz yeah sageX! Why? Can't your Webserver run CRYSIS?
sageX: please tell me the onboard has vga?
xtcx1: ryan22, MOST PEOPLE USE THE SERVER CD FOR INSTALL
xtcx1: :P
MPX: the lulz
xtcx1: which doesnt have a GUI
ryan22: no but some will
xtcx1: and uses ncurses
GNU\colossus: we're discussing a non-issue here, so I'm out
MPX: It's all trolling GNU\colossus
sageX: I am sorry BUT I NEED COMPIZ FOR THIS SERVER INSTALL
ryan22: my point is that why give up 2% of users for something as simple as an unstable vid driver
ryan22: it doesnt make sense
Modplan: I NEED WOBBLY WORDPRESS
sageX: lol
sageX: I need wobbly on my 54x40
GNU\colossus: because it's HUGELY better for the other 98%, and freedom is worth it
ryan22: sageX: i saying that vesa should be used instead of nauveau
sageX: oh
sageX: ok
GNU\colossus: yup. so that all those people with their widescreen, fixed-res LCDs get their eyes clobbered in by 1024x768
GNU\colossus: and go like "ew, that ubuntu stuff - it's SO UGLY!!11!"
MPX: GNU\colossus, Couldn't agree more >_<
ryan22: GNU\colossus: how if most of those users just use the nvidia drivers
GNU\colossus: anyway - I'm out for real now :>
MPX: CU
GNU\colossus: how if 2% of those users ditch ubuntu due to that low impression?
sageX: still loln
GNU\colossus: without ever actually trying to fix it by installing another frickin driver
GNU\colossus: /out
ryan22: why should they have to do this: http://duopetalflower.blogspot.com/2010/04/installing-and-running-nvidia-inside.html
ryan22: is that a good first impression?
ryan22: hacking grub to get video
ryan22: im not going to expect my mom to do that :P
GNU\colossus: they have to do this because nvidia chose a non-free license for their drivers. tough luck.
xtcx1: ryan22, you have to do just as bad in windows a lot
xtcx1: people do it there
ryan22: but windows is familar and theyll tolerate there
ryan22: they sadly wont tolerate it on linux
MPX: I remember when I first installed Windows 7 with my BENQ monitor and my 4850x2...using the vesa driver it would give me a black screen. Some weird bug
MPX: Oh well
MPX: I won't feed the trolls :D
ryan22: and shouldnt linux be better then windows
ryan22: and more reliable
Modplan: it is, but now you're saying one driver that doesn't work for 2% of people suddenly means everything
ryan22: it means everything when it restricts choice
xtcx1: but it doesnt
ryan22: the others can choose to use to use the nouveau or nvidia drivers
xtcx1: I mean what do you expect
xtcx1: any driver you try to work
xtcx1: 'oh this is an nvidia card, the driver isn't work, let's use ati'd driver!"
xtcx1: *ati's
xtcx1: :P
ryan22: i expect their to be a baseline drive that works for eveything and should be used to install a better one
ryan22: *driver
xtcx1: uhh
xtcx1: vesa?
xtcx1: ryan22, You don't realize this
Daekdroom: Wouldn't that be mesa running on software rendering?
xtcx1: drivers are NOT easy to code
Daekdroom: Which would be useless, because it can't run shit at reasonable FPS.
ryan22: and thats not whats used on ubuntu with nvidia cards
ryan22: you should have to choose to use nouveau as it doesnt work universally
mastertheknife: MPX: Have you tried dandel's patch? its AMAZING
Daekdroom: It's much better letting people use VESA instead of a driver that will just eat your system performance
ryan22: if what to play games, youre not using nouveau anyways
MPX: mastertheknife, no...
MPX: I'd love for it to be submitted to RC3 though
ryan22: *if you want
MPX: ryan22, why don't you email Cannonical and see if they give a rats ass
ryan22: they don't
MPX: and when they don't, come back and complain to us about how evil Cannonical is and stuff
ryan22: but i do, which is why it will not be enabled on infinityOS
RambJoe: email canonical and see if they are working with valve :P
Modplan: shuttleworth should buy valve
mastertheknife: MPX: its amazing! my fps doubled!
Modplan: make half-life exclusive to linux
ryan22: i want infinityOS to have 99.9% reliablity, not 98%
MPX: mastertheknife, Thing is, I can't be bothered compiling wine from source :S
xtcx1: ryan22, I bet you 20 dollars infinityOS will not work on my desktop
mastertheknife: MPX: I tested in No Mercy level1 spawn, went from 40-50 to 70, and when looking at floor it went from 50-60 to 120-140
xtcx1: (windows hardly works on this damn thing)
RambJoe: what would happen if google bought valve
xtcx1: :P
mastertheknife: MPX: tested again just to repeat... its amazing
MPX: mastertheknife, nice! Do you know if it will be submitted ?
RambJoe: zomg googe is written on the wall at bomb site A in de_dust google buying valve confirmed
RambJoe: de_dust2*
mastertheknife: MPX: It will probably will.. i hope he will continue to work on performance tweaks :)
MPX: Yeah! Hats off for dandel :)
MPX: The great thing for me is that we have mostly the same setup :d
mastertheknife: MPX: his patches are for the latest version from git though, but i only have 1.2_rc1 so i had to manually patch it
Flyser: mastertheknife: which patches
mastertheknife: dandel made a patch that increases fps in L4D
MPX: But only for ati cards right?
MPX: Or is it nvidia aswell?
mastertheknife: I have nvidia 8800gt
Flyser: nice :) link?
mastertheknife: I tested in No Mercy level1 spawn, went from 40-50 to 70, and when looking at floor it went from 50-60 to 120-140
Flyser: l4d2 was hardly playable on my 8400M
MPX: Nvidia : Bleh *hatred*
mastertheknife: Flyser: pm dandel.. i think hes working on a new patch now
riisen: cheese <3
mastertheknife: MPX: well if you have wine 1.2_rc1 i can just you the file from my system, should be hopefully drop in
Flyser: actually I don't want to test it right now (no time), I was just wondering what he fixed
Flyser: is it related to this bug: http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12453
mastertheknife: Flyser: he added an OpenGL extension
Flyser: huh? then he would have to patch the driver
mastertheknife: added suppor for an opengl extension to wine, my bad
mastertheknife: support*
RambJoe: is source sdk on mac yet
Flyser: mastertheknife: which extension?
mastertheknife: Flyser: framebuffer srgb i think
Flyser: nice :) He should definitly post his patch in wine bug #12453
Flyser: this will make a lot of people happy :)
MPX: mastertheknife, I use rc12
MPX: *rc2
mastertheknife: MPX: oh :/
Flyser: I am wondering if this could be merged before wine-1.2
christian_lappy: the patch from dandel <ß
christian_lappy: ?
mastertheknife: ????
mastertheknife: yeah*
Flyser: yes
christian_lappy: if it does not fix a bug, it will not get into 1.2
christian_lappy: feature freeze
Flyser: it would fix bug 12453
christian_lappy: thats a font bug
christian_lappy: not a speed up one
Flyser: how is that a font bug? http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12453
christian_lappy: Flyser: use the link you posted first :-)
christian_lappy: then you will see what i mean
Flyser: that's the same link
christian_lappy: it isnt
mastertheknife: lol
Flyser: O_o
mastertheknife: the one he posted about 20-30 lines ago is the same link
christian_lappy: lol
MPX: This is AWESOME
MPX: Zelda TP, running at 30 FPS in dolphin (ppa version)
MPX: Full sound and no graphical artifacts...it's...perfect
mastertheknife: MPX: you tried it ?
MPX: ?
mastertheknife: oh i thought you tried the patch
cmol: MPX: isen't zelda tp a game you must own?
MPX: cmol, I own both Gamecube and the Wii version
xTCx: Gamecube ftw.
cmol: MPX: I only played the wii version
MPX: I'm a console collector..
cmol: i'm missing the nes, but besides that i have all the stationary nintendo consoles :P
kurros: google chrome dev channel updated with webm and vp8 support
MPX: I also got the nes with 60 games
cmol: ahh shit! I'm waaaaay behind! :D
Sleepy_Coder: MPX: Way better than a Wii
MPX: Yep
MPX: cmol, I also got the entire Dreamcast and Saturn game library
MPX: and I also got about 70 genesis games :P
MPX: Don't get me started on gamecube :p
cmol: .......... I have a huge drum kit?
MPX: Cool. I got 3 guitars and a 67 VW Beetle 1600 Sport :p
MPX: =D
MPX: Oh wow...great idea
MPX: Install a nes in a beetle :O
cmol: haha
cmol: I have to hot girls opstairs who just invited me up for beer?
cmol: up
MPX: Well, I have a gf, that I can have sex with without being invited :p
cmol: I said two! :P
MPX: :p
MPX: Got me there
cmol: haha :P
cmol: well gotta go check it out.. bye :)
MPX: Cu :D
RambJoe: how fast do your pcs boot again?
Flyser: 22 seconds to the desktop. 16 to the login screen
RambJoe: ssd?
Flyser: yes
Flyser: otherwise a 3 years old notebook with a core 2 duo
meGenius: Flyser: which distro??
Flyser: Gentoo
GNU\colossus: about one minute from Powerbutton to kdm login screen (Gentoo on HDDs, with bridged networking via DHCP included)
Flyser: GNU\colossus: do you use openrc?
GNU\colossus: yup
GNU\colossus: i'm on ~amd64
Flyser: wow then 1 minute is really long ..
RambJoe: mine takes longer than that
RambJoe: :(
GNU\colossus: well, I got md, lvm, a bunch of services, and a rather slow DHCP to account for that ;)
MPX: RambJoe, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QMJtdvwIbK4
GNU\colossus: I don't think 1m is long btw
GNU\colossus: I usually just suspend to RAM anyway
RambJoe: lol wut i think i've seen that before
RambJoe: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1474011
MPX: Lol I can't believe the guy in the comments
MPX: It takes 16 seconds dum dum dum dum
MPX: Yeah because I forgot, Ubuntu Bios FTW. wtf is the guy made of?
RambJoe: lol
mastertheknife: L4D has a weird bug it seems
mastertheknife: stuck as hunter all around in versus mode
MPX: Nice...love being hunter
mastertheknife: this round is 20 min so far and im only hunter
mastertheknife: well its boring
mastertheknife: i like boomer and tank
MPX: It's awesome being a hunter on custom servers with custom pounces (140 max and so)
MPX: You jump from wall to wall and BAM
MPX: they lose all their HP
mastertheknife: heh im just bad with it i guess
RambJoe: wonder if valve would charge monthly for an mmo
GodofGrunts: Hows it hanging phoronix?
ytoox: Hi, I am using an ati mobility radeon hd 4300 on my laptop and I am trying to have it be less noisy, I tried the powerstates command and others but they don't seem to work. I am running ubuntu lucid
ytoox: any ideas of why this is happening?
GodofGrunts: ytoox: Do you mean noisy as in the fan is running loudly?
ytoox: oh yeah
ytoox: sorry
GodofGrunts: No problem.
ytoox: it is very loud, as if it was working hard all the time
GodofGrunts: Can you give me the output of the following "ls /proc/acpi/* | grep -i ati"
ytoox: I read that there are some powerstates that can be controlled of fan power but I tried some that seemed to be invalid for the aticonfig program
ytoox: ok
GodofGrunts: without the quotes
ytoox: nothing comes ouyt
GodofGrunts: Hmm
GodofGrunts: So it's not controlled by acpi then
GodofGrunts: What about just "ls /proc/acpi"
ytoox: here
ytoox: http://pastebin.ca/1876844
GodofGrunts: Well that sucks
ytoox: I read somewhere that powerstates is not supported in the linux driver anymore and that it is the laptop powerstate that would control the fan speed
GodofGrunts: Which driver are you using?
ytoox: latest one from ATI.com
ytoox: 8.732
GodofGrunts: Okay, do you have lm-sensors installed?
ytoox: checking
ytoox: ....
ytoox: yes, installed
GodofGrunts: Okay, I'm googling some stuff and pwmconfig has come up.
GodofGrunts: I'm trying to find out if it can control the GPU fan
ytoox: ok
ytoox: it could, I also read that on my laptop, processor and graphics card share the fan
GodofGrunts: They share one fan?
ytoox: that's what one article said, I cant really open my laptop to check though
ytoox: I;ve got an msi x600 laptop
GodofGrunts: Sorry if my answers are sporadic I'm at work :p
GodofGrunts: You might want to mess with the pwmconfig
ytoox: it;s all good man, thanks for taking the time
ytoox: checkinhg
ytoox: I typed pwmconfig and it says " There are no pwm-capable sensor modules installed"
GodofGrunts: Have you ran sesnors_detect or whatever it is?
ytoox: checking
GodofGrunts: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fan_Speed_Control#pwmconfig
GodofGrunts: The arch wiki seems to have a step by step
ytoox: ok, I am running the sensors-detect
ytoox: I'll paste on pastebin
ytoox: http://pastebin.ca/1876858
GodofGrunts: Okay now try the pmwconfig
ytoox: same message, no pwm-capable sensor modules installed
ytoox: should I restart?
RambJoe: what is the best package mirror for arch?
MPX: dandel, l4d freezes x after a few mins of online play still :S
GodofGrunts: ytoox: You can try, but sensors should have loaded the modules
ytoox: ok
ytoox: mmm
GodofGrunts: RambJoe: Meaning what?
RambJoe: on the arch install
GodofGrunts: Depends what you want
GodofGrunts: Oh
GodofGrunts: Where do you live?
RambJoe: what ftp server should i use
RambJoe: um UK
GodofGrunts: Oh damn dude. I could tell you about the US servers but I don't know about the UK
RambJoe: oh
RambJoe: i looked on the arch forums and people have the same problem as me who used the ftp arch iso
GodofGrunts: But your country is small enough that I wouldn't imagine that it would matter a whole lot
ytoox: brb
GodofGrunts: Oh yeah I have that issue as well
GodofGrunts: I only use http
GodofGrunts: ftp seems to break
GodofGrunts: :-/
RambJoe: ohh
RambJoe: oh yeah i'll try the http one actaully
RambJoe: as people have that same /mnt problem i did
GodofGrunts: RambJoe: What mount problem is that?
RambJoe: the files i needed weren't in /mnt
RambJoe: like /mnt/etc/rc.conf
RambJoe: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=49300
ytoox: yeah, it seems I dont have sensors that can be controlled by pwmconfig
programble: RambJoe: you are obv not installing the packages or something
GodofGrunts: programble: Welcome to the conversation
GodofGrunts: ytoox: Have you tried googling your model and the problem?
RambJoe: i am think its the ftp servers
programble: then use a different one
GodofGrunts: programble: Again, welcome to the conversation
RambJoe: yay it works
ytoox: yes, I did on the phoronix forums only
GodofGrunts: ytoox: :-/ What was the model again?
ytoox: ati mobility radeon hd 4300
GodofGrunts: Laptop model I mean
ytoox: msi x600
RambJoe: arch is installed :D
GodofGrunts: ytoox: Google shows that a lot of people (both Windows and Linux) have this problem. Seems to be related to the fact that there is only 1 fan and it has to work overtime to keep everything cool.
GodofGrunts: RambJoe: :D
RambJoe: whats a good desktop environment?
programble: anything but GNOME?
GodofGrunts: I would highly recommend you DON'T slow it down even if you can
ytoox: ok
RambJoe: is fluxbox good
GodofGrunts: RambJoe: I prefer Gnome to all else
programble: no
programble: fluxbox is complete shit
RambJoe: oh lol
GodofGrunts: RambJoe: But on slower systems I like Lxde
programble: LXDE is good
RambJoe: i might use that then as its on a VM
GodofGrunts: If you just want a WM I like openbox
ytoox: does it seem possible that I can decrease the power consumption on ubuntu and that could affect the fan power of the ati card?
GodofGrunts: ytoox: No it does not.
ytoox: ok
GodofGrunts: ytoox: That's a slim laptop from what I read. So it will suffer the same as Unibody macbooks
GodofGrunts: Running HOT AS HELL FIRE
GodofGrunts: RambJoe: Personally though I hate KDE with the passion of 1000 fiery white hot suns.
GodofGrunts: I think that Gnome is the best Managed
ytoox: no, not at all, but it does not perform as well as it does on windows
RambJoe: ok thanks :)
GodofGrunts: ytoox: Performance meaning?
RambJoe: can i install more than one?
GodofGrunts: RambJoe: Of course
ytoox: yes
RambJoe: is it like openbox --replace
ytoox: my friend has the same computer and the fan never seems to be so loud
ytoox: and the system keeps pretty cool
djura-san: im off now. have a nice chat people. good night :)
GodofGrunts: I would recommend you get a good display manager though
GodofGrunts: RambJoe: If you have a display manager (GDM KDM SLiM etc) you can choose when you login
GodofGrunts: ytoox: I don't know man. Sorry. Might try over at the Ubuntu forums or IRC.
RambJoe: thanks :D
ytoox: no worries man, it's not terribly bad, it seems at least that the drivers from amd are better with power sonsumption than the ubuntu ones
mastertheknife: hey godofgrunts :)
GodofGrunts: Hey mastertheknife
GodofGrunts: :D
RambJoe: what graphic drivers should i use with virtual box
GodofGrunts: The cirtual box one
GodofGrunts: :P
RambJoe: ok lol
RambJoe: will it be in the PPA
RambJoe: pacman
GodofGrunts: yes
GodofGrunts: wait
GodofGrunts: what?
mastertheknife: I never thought this will happen but my /home partition is full
GodofGrunts: mastertheknife: O.O What was the size?
mastertheknife: 80 GB
mastertheknife: but i have music and videos on the windows partition
GodofGrunts: :-/ Small partition is small
RambJoe: i mena can i install like pacman -S virtualboxdrivername
mastertheknife: here its just steam games i guess
mastertheknife: yeah
GodofGrunts: RambJoe: pacman -S virtualbox-additions
GodofGrunts: mastertheknife: Ah isee
RambJoe: thanks :D
RambJoe: and on my actual pc, it would be fglrx?
GodofGrunts: Do you have a newer ATI card?
RambJoe: 4870
GodofGrunts: Then yes
RambJoe: :)
GodofGrunts: Although getting it to work with Arch is a PITA
GodofGrunts: Because Arch dropped support for ATI
RambJoe: :(
GodofGrunts: >:-|
GodofGrunts: Thankfully, there is a repository that someone made to make our life easier! :D
GodofGrunts: Although I forget where they are
GodofGrunts: Okay guys, I need to go write tutorial for passing the LPIC-1
GodofGrunts: Peace
RambJoe: aww i got my mouse working but not keyboard :(
thomashc: RambJoe: still trying to do arch?
RambJoe: yeah
RambJoe: the keyboard doesn't work in X
RambJoe: but mouse does lol
thomashc: dear god ..
thomashc: does not think arch is for you
RambJoe: :(
mastertheknife: Go Gentoo :)
thomashc: rofl
thomashc: mastertheknife: or like I am right now
thomashc: :FS
RambJoe: lol
thomashc: *LFS
thomashc: :P
Sleepy_Coder: Gentoo <3
mastertheknife: Oh i didnt try LFS but i love my gentoo
thomashc: yeah
thomashc: I'm doing LFS right now
RambJoe: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/VirtualBox#Keyboard_and_mouse_between_the_host_and_the_guest
RambJoe: thats all it says =/
thomashc: Virtualbox sucks for arch
thomashc: well
RambJoe: oh lol
thomashc: las time I tried was 2008....
RambJoe: whats the best for it
thomashc: a REAL install perhaps?
thomashc: lol
mastertheknife: Virtualbox is only getting better and better
RambJoe: lol
thomashc: wtf do you think is best
thomashc: mastertheknife: Virtualbox is awesome
mastertheknife: you heard it supports directx and opengl now? although slow
thomashc: yeah it does
mastertheknife: but maybe in a few year we wont need to dual boot windows
Sleepy_Coder: >.> I logged into my friends little webcam channel on stickam and found him masturbating :x
mastertheknife: years*
thomashc: use it all the time
thomashc: mastertheknife: I dont dualboot anyways
thomashc: lol
thomashc: Sleepy_Coder: wtf lol
mastertheknife: thomashc: how much time it takes to install LFS? it sounds very tempting and challenging
Sleepy_Coder: I think he was being weird with his gf :x
mastertheknife: Sleepy_Coder: :X
thomashc: mastertheknife: in the book there is an official count of like 190 minutes
thomashc: lol
thomashc: BUT
mastertheknife: oh thats shorter then gentoo then
thomashc: it really depends
thomashc: that only gets you a base system
thomashc: though most people install some sort of package manager
thomashc: I'm going to use pacman
Sleepy_Coder: I logged out before I think he noticed, but now I don't want to talk to him ever :x
mastertheknife: wow you even get to choose what package manager...
thomashc: Sleepy_Coder: ROFL
mastertheknife: thats awesome dude
mastertheknife: i will try it some day
thomashc: mastertheknife: you build everything from source. it's totally what YOU make your system
Sleepy_Coder: ^ <3
thomashc: nothing is automated
thomashc: NOTHING
mastertheknife: thomashc: Gentoo is pretty much almost all from source too but it installs portage and is a distro that depends on python
thomashc: lol
thomashc: LFS doesnt install everything
thomashc: unless you want to
thomashc: LFS actually isn't a distro at all
thomashc: LFS is this big book
thomashc: lol
RambJoe: what keyboard driver is arch meant to use in virutalbox
mastertheknife: but what about the init scripts and suc you make them yourself?
mastertheknife: such*
thomashc: yeah
thomashc: I mean the book tells you everything to do
thomashc: but yeah you do everything
mastertheknife: RambJoe: well i have no idea but are you member of the vbox group, and have the 3 vbox drivers loaded?
thomashc: right now I'm compiling gcc
RambJoe: vbox group?
thomashc: RambJoe: if vbox laucnhes you are in it
thomashc: lol
RambJoe: i have additions which is what you're mean to need
RambJoe: oh then yeah
mastertheknife: does Virtualbox use GTK?
thomashc: no
thomashc: it uses QT4
mastertheknife: Qt4??? it doesnt use my kde4's colors
thomashc: hmm idk
thomashc: but
thomashc: it uses QT4
Nevtus: mastertheknife: try the new betas, the stable one uses it's own bundled version of Qt that causes problems with themes (or something like that)
mastertheknife: Yeah im using the oxygen theme
mastertheknife: virtualbox 3.0.12
Rednaxela: I'm annoyed by that too as a GTK/Gnome user, as my systemwide QT config is set to match GTK, hah
Nevtus: I'm using Virtualbox 3.2.0_BETA1 and it uses my Qt theme, which matches my prefered GTK theme
mastertheknife: Rednaxela: you use qtcurve?
mastertheknife: Rednaxela: oh, nevermind
mastertheknife: Nevtus: oh i see.. thanks :)
Rednaxela: I open up qtconfig, look in the options, and under "Select GUI Style" I select GTK+, That's as far as I go as far as configuring QT :P
Nevtus: the only Qt applications I use often are smplayer and Virtualbox
Rednaxela: VirtualBox and Rosegarden here
thomashc: KDE here
thomashc: lol
thomashc: *cough*
mastertheknife: kde4 :)
RambJoe: MODULES=(vboxnetflt) does that look right for rc.conf
mastertheknife: RambJoe: edit /etc/modules.d.autoload and add vboxdrv, vboxflt and vboxnetflt to there
RambJoe: ok thanks
mastertheknife: my bad
mastertheknife: /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6 and add vboxdrv, vboxnetadp and vboxnetflt to there
mastertheknife: if you have vboxflt in your system then that too.. i dont have it
RambJoe: ok thanks
RambJoe: so its not rc.conf then?
mastertheknife: ls /lib/modules/`uname -r`/misc/
mastertheknife: well maybe its possible to do it there too
RambJoe: what is /lib/modules/`uname -r`/misc/
mastertheknife: its the folder where virtualbox modules\drivers are on my system
mastertheknife: cant hurt to verify they exist
RambJoe: it says no such file or dir
RambJoe: dw
RambJoe: i have vboxguest.ko
mastertheknife: hmm no idea :S
RambJoe: vboxvfs.ko and vboxvideo.ko
RambJoe: i dont ahve vboxdrv
mastertheknife: maybe others here know
dashcloud: hi, I need to copy everything from my USB drive (/dev/sdb2) to my hard drive (/dev/sda1)- cp -p -r -v /dev/sdb2 /dev/sda1 gives me a strange message- removed '/dev/sda1' 'dev/sdb2 -> '/dev/sda1'
thomashc: it would probably help to mount the drives
thomashc: and then copy the contents from the mounted folders
RambJoe: whats in your xorg.conf to do with keyboards?
thomashc: RambJoe:
thomashc: ARCH IS NOT FOR YOU.
thomashc: that is all.
thomashc: lol
RambJoe: :(
RambJoe: lol
r4: arch is good times
r4: i started on it
r4: you can to!
RambJoe: :)
r4: the wiki should be able to answer pretty much any question you have
r4: along with the forums and #archlinux
RambJoe: im probably not using the open source virtual box if i got it from apt am i?
r4: i didnt read much above i just saw "ARCH IS NOT FOR YOU." and wanted to mention it is possible to start on arch with no experience using linux
ryan22: i need to try out arch one of these days
thomashc: r4: possibly
thomashc: it wouldn't be pretty though
thomashc: especially if you had no help
thomashc: ryan22: I'm doing LFS
r4: well thats why i listed those resources
r4: also i installed arch via virtual machine multiple times before actually doing it
r4: and i had a working laptop online so i could pull from resources to make correct choices
thomashc: RambJoe: if you got it from the repos it's probably opensource but that depends on the fistro
ryan22: thomasHC: good luck
thomashc: ryan22: thanks, It's going good
RambJoe: um dont think it is the OSE one
RambJoe: as theirs another package called virtualbox-ose
ryan22: eh i just use vmware player
ryan22: it works
ryan22: always
thomashc: RambJoe: what distro?
r4: i use vbox-ose
r4: i use it to run windows (my hacked up version)
RambJoe: ubuntu
thomashc: RambJoe: what repos do you have?
r4: so does anyone else think google's idea of Chrome OS is ass?
ryan22: yes
RambJoe: virtualbox-3.1
ryan22: cloud computing needs a cache
r4: i think it might be good on really OLD machines that you want solely for those things
r4: but thats about it
ryan22: linux + dropbox >>>>>> chrome os
ryan22: hell i can even access my dropbox dcos on my iphone
thomashc: ryan22: totally different concepts
r4: sounds like chrome OS will bring a lot of old PCs back to life
ryan22: c >>>> ajax
thomashc: lol...
thomashc: totally different concepts
ryan22: if you really need a low power "cloud" computer
ryan22: just like run nx server on a linux install with x
RambJoe: wish you could copy paste between my actual computer and virtualbox lol
thomashc: you can
r4: ryan22: yeah you could but chrome os isnt for computer savvy ppl (especially linux ppl)
RambJoe: :|
ryan22: and like use my thin client: http://sourceforge.net/projects/trentthinclient/
r4: its for windows/mac ppl
r4: who just want things to work
thomashc: I use linux because it works
ryan22: this is easy enough for windows ppl: http://tinyurl.com/excalibur-screens
r4: linux can pretty much do everything that is coming out and it will probably be like that for quite some time
thomashc: I develop on linux because I can change everything
thomashc: :P
ryan22: r4: whats im talking about is all linux :P
r4: i use linux becuase it lets me do exactly what i want
r4: ah
ryan22: its cloud computing done right
ryan22: think of this
ryan22: protable thin clients you can buy for $50
ryan22: that connect to that server
r4: with linux i dont have to find cheap hacks that work around bugs within an OS or something stupid...i can just do what i want with very little hassle and minimal research (usually)
ryan22: and the sever is just an optimized verion of desktop linux
ryan22: thats the future
Azerthoth: the future for idiots
r4: tbh i think its nice to have devices talking to each other but i dont want a central location for everything of mine
r4: too big of a security issue
r4: someone gets access that you dont want them to...they have everything
Azerthoth: exactly right
Azerthoth: either keep your data yourself, or just post everything to facebook, the cloud is the best data mining concept ever concieved
r4: pretty much
r4: and everyone you know will end up using it :P
Azerthoth: people voluntarily give up all control and all access to some third party in faith that they will A: keep it safe ... forever B: be available forever
Azerthoth: I call those people fools when I'm feeling charitable
r4: im on facebook (regretting it at this point) but im choosing to stay out of all of those social networks now
r4: all that needs to happen is someone smart gets pissed off or wants a challenge
r4: and really bad things can happen!
RambJoe: i ran out of space on /home lol
thomashc: lol
RambJoe: lol i own a directory but im not allowed to write to it fail
thomashc: RambJoe: once again
thomashc: ARCH IS NOT FOR YOU
RambJoe: lol
RambJoe: worked it out :D
RambJoe: i only chmodded the folder not the contents of it *faceplam*
Rednaxela: heh
RambJoe: libxt for shared clipboard
RambJoe: error inserting vboxdrv invalid module format lol
ryan22: http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showpost.php?p=131917&postcount=12
programble: RambJoe: once again
programble: ARCH IS NOT FOR YOU
programble: QFE
thomashc: lol?
DonScott: is very sad now ....
DonScott: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1288141&page=3#45
Sleepy_Coder: DonScott: Volunteer Moderator, he's a weeny :p
Sleepy_Coder: Furthermore, he copied that from the Steam wiki, it doesn't look like he put any thought into it beyond recycling old responses
Sleepy_Coder: You can't say he's wrong with absolute certainty, but he's definitely not a credible source.
Sleepy_Coder: lol volunteer moderators.
Sleepy_Coder: I bet it's a Windows fanboy :p
Rednaxela: lol, a mere volunteer moderator would never hear of future plans of Valve
Rednaxela: laughs
kurros: chuckles
Sleepy_Coder: lowly vermin ;p
Sleepy_Coder: We should start another thread to laugh at Volunteer Moderators :o
Sleepy_Coder: "DUST BENEATH OUR FINGERNAILS"
