Phoronix IRC Log: 2010-05-25

mastertheknife: I'm so glad i relocated my project from googlecode to github
mastertheknife: so much easier to just use git directly instead of using git to upload into google code's svn
Rednaxela: I like github in some ways, except for the following: It's notion of forks is a little... ridged, and 1) doesn't present things nicely when a "fork" becomes the "official"/"main" version, 2) Doesn't make it easy to see the full relations between branches/forks, 3) Doesn't give a nice way to distinguish between branches that plan to eventually get pulled by the main repository, and 'hostile' branches that don't
Rednaxela: I mean, simply as a git host, it works, but I wouldn't like it for larger projects
mastertheknife: oh
mastertheknife: for big project its better to have your own server and repository ;)
Rednaxela: That's what one would think... but the way github markets it's paid private services... it would not indicate that as being how they view it... :P
mastertheknife: I actually like how they let you host opensource for free
mastertheknife: its the way to go
Rednaxela: Yeah, agreed, though the way they market their paid service does strike me as, maybe slightly tacky and unappealing
Rednaxela: Hm, there was one time I hosted something on github. A "mirror-on-write" fuse filesystem. There were some remaining known issues though.... not the least of which is it does the normal and mirrored writes sequentially and speeds will be terrible. Were I do have a need again for that... I'd redesign the "mirror-on-write" system as an inotify-based script rather than fuse filesystem
mastertheknife: Rednaxela: mirror on write filesystem is a great idea
Rednaxela: Occasionally useful yes :)
Rednaxela: But I ended up losing my use for it so I stopped working on it, an I decided the fuse-based approach isn't so great anyway, and that an inotify-based approach would be easier to manage. It couldn't block writes till the mirroring is done, but it would just be plain easier to architecture and manage, also easier to use I think since it wouldn't require mounting over anything
Rednaxela: (It used a funny approach of mounting over a non-empty directory, and keeping a file descriptor for the original directory open, as to allow it to pass reads/writes through into the directory hidden by the mounting... :)
Rednaxela: (psst, founder gone, party on?)
mastertheknife: lol party :P
kurros: pizza party?
riisen: omg Partay ;D
mikeplus64: Are the ATI drivers for Mac OS X any good?
robotti^: it depends from apple. Because Apple write their own drivers
robotti^: GPU drivers
robotti^: I think
mastertheknife: Why Apple writes their own drivers?
mastertheknife: Wouldn't it be better if they used nvidia\ati drivers?
Galaxy|: Apple collaborates with the manufacturer to write the drivers
Galaxy|: but they are very posh about that and prefer to have that done in-house by their own developers
mastertheknife: that explains why OpenGL support is so lagging behind
Galaxy|: i dont think apple will give the licensing leeway to ATI or NVIDIA to write the drivers for them
Galaxy|: its apple's way or the highway and that very logic got them kicked to the curb by nvidia a few years ago
mastertheknife: Its why we have OpenGL 4.0 already supported here in linux with drivers from nvidia and ati
mastertheknife: while in OS X supports OpenGL 2.1
Galaxy|: it supports OGL 3.0 now
Galaxy|: as of 10.6.3
Galaxy|: 4.0 should be done by 10.6.5
Galaxy|: if they keep on track
mastertheknife: Well 10.6.2 is 2.1
Galaxy|: yep
mastertheknife: I heard that valve is putting pressure on them
Galaxy|: putting pressure on apple is like beating a dead horse
mastertheknife: I think porting the engine to linux will be far smoother
Galaxy|: that's even _if_ they will do it
mastertheknife: Our OpenGL is not just newer but probably also faster
Galaxy|: their linux manifest still 403s
mastertheknife: Yeah.. we can only hope they are working on it :P
alexander1: they have to solve the case sensitive issue first
mastertheknife: thats minor
mikeplus64: I was thinking earlier that if Apple thought "Hum... This open source ATi driver could have potential compared to our drivers." and started developing/funding development it could be good for 'everyone'.
Galaxy|: lol
Galaxy|: not gonna happen sadly
Galaxy|: im not entirely sure what their deal is with the drivers but i am fairly certain they do them themselves
Galaxy|: not sure why they don't let nvidia or ati code them or at least participate in coding them or whether they do or don't
eddieate: hey, anyone used sliTaz before?
giselher: I hope VALVe starts an open beta on Wednesday :)
giselher: eddiate: Yes, but not the slitaz 3
Galaxy|: steam updates have slowed to a trickle
Galaxy|: there was only one yesterday evening
Galaxy|: before that a few days of silence
eddieate: ok
eddieate: well i spose its more of a gparted question
eddieate: im trying to format an old swap partition
eddieate: but if i try 'swapoff' then it tells me it can't deactiveate swap invalid option -- 'v'
mastertheknife: hmm.. weird
giselher: maybe it isn't swapped on :D
eddieate: i think it is :s
eddieate: if i just do 'swapoff -a' it says that drive and not permitted
mastertheknife: eddieate: do you see it in swapon -s
eddieate: mastertheknife: it kindly informs me that -s is an invalid option
eddieate: i might download an ubuntu livecd, im not convinced by slitaz
mastertheknife: eddieate: very strange
eddieate: i think its the live disc im using
mastertheknife: eddieate: /sbin/swapon -s
eddieate: its actually a password cracking tool, just the only livecd with gparted i had laying around
eddieate: i shall try that thx
eddieate: nah no luck :/
mastertheknife: why do you need a password cracking tool, you forgot root password?
mastertheknife: if you forgot root password you can change it easily no need for any password cracking tool
mastertheknife: ohh
mastertheknife: i misread
mastertheknife: eddieate: Try ubuntu live cd, its good
eddieate: yeah i will, just didnt have one here (at work)
eddieate: and we have shitty internet
eddieate: haha no i wasnt using it for its password cracking abilities , just the only livecd with a GUI i had to hand
NigeyUK: meep fkin meep
Wipster: word
NigeyUK: ello Wipster
Wipster: lo
NigeyUK: michaellarabel, you should put an article on phoronix calling on all the linux users to boycott valve until they tell us wtf is going on !
NigeyUK:
giselher: did someone notice the big Portal update (90 MB), maybe they're getting ready for the linux version
mastertheknife: I think it will take a while
NigeyUK: yeah i noticed portal had a big update, as have the osx bins
The_Muh: news?
NigeyUK: nah just a update to portal, and the osx bins
NigeyUK: however steamonlinux.com is about to get a facelift :D
giselher: NigeyUK: you could add Mibbit IRC on steamonlinux.com with #phoronix as channel :D
NigeyUK: ooo i will do that
giselher: wo WordPress?
giselher: cool
NigeyUK: :D
giselher: no wp-config.php file?
NigeyUK: doing it now, jus on phone.
giselher: lol
NigeyUK: bloody gf..lol
s_20: thank goodness you've got your priorities straight.......
NigeyUK: lol
giselher: the valve banner in the Mac sections says, this week some multiplayer titles are coming
s_20: i wonder when they'll dare to release tf2/l4d(2)
mastertheknife: need to fix windoze :X
eddieate: that microsofts job ;)
mastertheknife: haha
mastertheknife: My windows install is broken for over half a year.. it BSODs with an error about ram, got me thinking my ram went defective.. but linux and memtest86 show it to be working perfectly.. windows is crap, the only reason im fixing it now is because i have to debug an old program there
mastertheknife: its time to do it :X
The_Muh: dont support windows-fools =)
The_Muh: (scnr)
NigeyUK: lol
giselher: NigeyUK: Why did you set up Wordpress? Is there a special reason?
NigeyUK: yeah, i got bored of the picture..lol
NigeyUK: and it'll be easier to add some updates
The_Muh: moar coffee!!!!!!111
The_Muh: 4th cup today... empty... damn
giselher: NigeyUK: But the picture also has to be on that site :)
NigeyUK: oh it will be dont worry ;)
giselher: Oh every time I reload that page, something changes :D
NigeyUK: lol
NigeyUK: This document was successfully checked as XHTML 1.0 Transitional!
NigeyUK: Result: Passed
NigeyUK: mint
NigeyUK: giselher, http://www.steamonlinux.com/
NigeyUK: lol
s_20: that's just what we need, more imbeciles coming in here going "ARE WE THERE YET?" :(
NigeyUK: lol
NigeyUK: coffee, then ill finish the site off, i hate wordpress setup, takes an age to get things how i want them :/
s_20: i am in awe about how people left and right are bastardising wordpress as a CMS
s_20: (no offence mate)
giselher: lol
Rednaxela: Like the wordpress site itself?
NigeyUK: itlol none taken, its just quick and relatively simple
NigeyUK: -it
giselher: buyed my first game on steam :)
giselher: bought*
NigeyUK: mibbit doesnt work :/
Rednaxela: On Freenode? Yeah, they block it. Use http://webchat.freenode.net/
NigeyUK: ahh that explains it, cheers dude
Nigeyy: sweet
Arse2It: moo
NigeyUK: get out gimp
giselher: steam on linux confirmed! http://www.steamonlinux.com/?p=25
NigeyUK: lol
NigeyUK: it wont let me put the chat and download links on the navbar, how fkin gay is that
meGenius: giselher: in fact, we know :P
sado1: lolwut
sado1: source?
NigeyUK: lol
meGenius: secret sources :P
NigeyUK: can some1 goto the site n checkk the youtube vid shows up ?
eddieate: steamonlinux.com?
NigeyUK: yeah
eddieate: no vid here
NigeyUK: oki 2 secs
NigeyUK: and now ?
sado1: better
NigeyUK: ty :)
eddieate: yeah that did it
NigeyUK: mustve hit preview instead of update, duh at ,me
Kame: That video doesn't even show the "full" client running :(
NigeyUK: i did notice
somename: nice arch linux ad in your vid :P
NigeyUK: mightve been before the 2nd vgui patch
NigeyUK: not my vid, just 1 i found, arch is to complicated for me lol i'll stick to ubuntu for now
somename: arch is only at the first time complicated
somename: for me ,at least
meGenius: what is the thing that is so special about arch
eddieate: its really quick
NigeyUK: i keep meaning to give it another go
meGenius: that's it
somename: its bleeding edge and it got pacman :P
eddieate: and i don't mean in the benchmark sense
NigeyUK: lol
eddieate: just feels fast
somename: not the game pacman... the [pac]age [man]ager
eddieate: but its a pain in the ass
meGenius: if it's about the speed, i would use mandriva instant on
meGenius: anyway, fedora is my paradise at the moment :P
NigeyUK: is 13 out yet ?
NigeyUK: sooo
NigeyUK: noone talking eh
NigeyUK: farts
eddieate: nice
NigeyUK: woke u up though :p
NigeyUK: wb Daekdroom
Sleepy_Coder: blah.
NigeyUK: ello sleepy
NigeyUK: http://www.steamonlinux.com/?page_id=37
Sleepy_Coder: hola :-)
NigeyUK: wasnrt me .. honest ;)
DeathCrawler: fags dont release mah steam
DeathCrawler: =/
NigeyUK: :(
RambJoe: woh cool its a propper site now :D
RambJoe: for that about page linux steam will be cancelled :(
NigeyUK: haha nah, gabes got a sense of humour aint he? ;)
NigeyUK: i think mastertheknife is gonna do a nice steam / tux logo for it
r4_: why does gabe have a sense of humor?
r4_: whats the joke?
r4_: who owns steamonlinux.com
NigeyUK: i do
r4_: ah
NigeyUK: and wordpress is royally doing my head in :@
Nevtus: so what are you planning on doing with this website?
Nevtus: I kinda liked it more when it was just an image :P
NigeyUK: not much, just keep people updated
LibertyZero: You could write down the history of steam on linux from its first rumours in ?2007? until now. Would definitely make a good article :-)
NigeyUK: better than answering them in ere, just give em the link and they can go READ for once lol
Nevtus: couldn't you just search phoronix for that?
NigeyUK: LibertyZero, i was thinking of doing that in the about section
NigeyUK: Nevtus, you know they dont SEARCH, they just come in and ask "anything new on steam" ?
NigeyUK: etc etc
NigeyUK: and tbh, i think itd be quite handy to have 1 site thats got all the things we know about steam on linux in 1 place .. theres alot of info and history out there but its kinda scattered all over the place
christian_lappy: its damn boring without new steam client files ..:-(
NigeyUK: lol yup
Nevtus: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=ODI4NA Doesn't that email actually decrease the chances for Steam on Linux rather than improve them?
christian_lappy: is the mail from iculus or the company behind killing floor ?
christian_lappy: ah, ryan it seems
Nevtus: yeah Ryan, surely he'd know if anyone due to his long running experience porting games to linux
christian_lappy: mhhh,,if he would know about a steam client he surey woudn't be allowed to tell
maligor: you could offer him free beer's until he's drunk enough to tell!
Nevtus: he just wouldn't talk about it, not say currently there isn't one beyond the broken binaries
RambJoe: cliifs on new article?
Nevtus: phoronix jumping on every little "hint" about Steam on Linux is getting really lame. Especially when it's clear the "new lead" is sourcing an old phoronix article/forum activity
RambJoe: lol
RambJoe: so basically its an article based on an article based on an article from phoronix
Nevtus: yup
maligor: Microsoft porting Windows to Linux!
mastertheknife: NigeyUK: nice work
xorl: NigeyUK, if you need wordpress help, I am a wordpress ninja.
xorl: http://slack.in/ <--- my wordpress, doesn't even look or feel like wordpress haha
wao: hm
wao: .india tld
xorl: wao, haha, it's "slackin"
xorl: not just 'slack.in', i took advantage of the tld.
wao: i know, I can readz!
wao: :)
mamalujo: well, this was disappointing, seems I cannot buy discworld noir normally. any suggestions on sites that sell old games, tried only GoG, don't know if there are others>
NigeyUK: xorl, might take you up on that offer m8 :)
NigeyUK: mastertheknife, hows the windows going? lol
mastertheknife: NigeyUK: Took like 3 hours to fix it
NigeyUK: oh dam, what was it ?
mastertheknife: NigeyUK: I removed drivers from my system, only when i had almost no driver installed it worked
mastertheknife: so i have no idea what driver caused it
mastertheknife: maybe the nvidia one
NigeyUK: eugh, typical windows driver stability then lol
mastertheknife: then just installed them all back, fired up FS X and FS2004 to test the program and now coding the fixes for FS X
NigeyUK: excellent stuff :D
mastertheknife: by the way i think i need to correct some grammar in the program
mastertheknife: NigeyUK: whats more correct.. Operation Mode or Operating Mode ?
NigeyUK: operating mode
mastertheknife: oh ok thanks :)
NigeyUK: no probs :D
lulz: wibble wobble Gabes ate to much pie again
mastertheknife: :O
giselher: :D
alexandernst: want's some information about Steam client for linux :( ... damn 403 error
mastertheknife: heh
mastertheknife: me too :P
mastertheknife: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1282793
mastertheknife: "Sitting in a timeout".. moderators on forums are not ban happy anymore? lol
SteamOnLinux: arse!
Wipster: biscuits
SteamOnLinux: munch!
mastertheknife: hmmm whos this? :)
mastertheknife: Gabe ?
SteamOnLinux: gabe .. yes .. i ate all the pies!
SteamOnLinux: dude, i tried doing a logo in gimp, and it looks like a 4 year old was let loose on it lmao!
Tazer: ?_?
Tazer: Any updates?
SteamOnLinux: only to the steaonlinux.com site .. lol
mastertheknife: heh
Tazer: yeah
Tazer: Also, I recognize it's a fan site and all and this is just a random idea, but if this gets big enough to attract attention, Valve might be more inclined to listen if you aren't cursing :u
Nevtus: Tazer: what's more professional than an image of tux on the toilet?
NigeyUK: oh we wont be cursing them, and the toilet pic is kinda cute :p
Tazer: Oh i know
Tazer: Just that him saying shit prolly isnt the best way to attract attention. I dunno I'm so desensitized to language that I don't know what is or isn't considered appropriate with companies and things
Nevtus: NigeyUK: you should have a dark background, light foreground theme similar to Steam itself
NigeyUK: Tazer, itll be changed by tomoz, im to tired to do the articles at the mo
NigeyUK: Nevtus, if you can find someone to do the theme, ill happily change it lol
Tazer: O:
NigeyUK: i should add a slogan ... Say No To WINE!
Daekdroom: Say yes to Whisky!
NigeyUK: yush!
s_20: NigeyUK: aren't you somewhat scared valve will pull an apple and send you a friendly but firm notice to take it the fuck down or risk legal action?
Nevtus: unless he starts pretending to be Valve, I doubt they'd do that
s_20: Nevtus: i think my initial thought was just that.. when i read this comment about colours and trying to make it look more similar to the "real steam"
s_20: i reckon that wouldn't be the smartest move
Nevtus: Valve haven't patented dark colour schemes
NigeyUK: s_20, i'll be taking steps to make sure they no grounds for a cease and decist against the site
giselher: NigeyUK: You could also add links to steampowered.com and valvesoftware.com
Nevtus: that's a good idea
Nevtus: and make it clear they are external sites and you aren't connecteed to them in any way
Nevtus: then use a dark theme :P
NigeyUK: yup, done them just not published the update to the links page
Nevtus: *connected
NigeyUK: Nevtus, it'll be in the footer of every page that it is now an official site connected with steam or valve software
NigeyUK: not*
Nevtus: however Gabe told you to do it in a dream
NigeyUK: :p
s_20: NigeyUK: the more the better, i think this is one of the cases where better safe than sorry definitely applies
NigeyUK: indeed, i agree, i think the site can be useful, but no use if it gets a request to be taken down
NigeyUK: right im off, thanks the ideas / criticisms / suggestions guys, ill put some content up tomorrow etc etc .. those links are updated to :D
mastertheknife: NigeyUK: good night :)
NigeyUK: night dudey! gf wants an hour cuddled up watching the tv grrr! lol
s_20: NigeyUK: what did i say about priorities.....
NigeyUK: haha dude she battered me earlier with a sock !
s_20: you're gonna be a dad?
NigeyUK: bloody hope not! lol
NigeyUK: nn!
s_20: gnight
wao: ttp://www.recordtripping.com/
alexandernst: Will rootless X will ever run on/with propietary nvidia/ati/others drivers?
Azerthoth: works just fine for me
alexandernst: Azerthoth: rootless
alexandernst: means no need to run X as root
Azerthoth: as user: X :1 -ac
Azerthoth: I know what it means
alexandernst: Azerthoth: ok, when will distros start using it as rootless?
alexandernst: (on arch and X is ran as root)
Azerthoth: alexandernst, its your distro thats shooting you in the foot
Azerthoth: been able to run this in Gentoo since I first learned of it years ago
alexandernst: bah... :(
alexandernst: Azerthoth: thanks for the info ;)
Azerthoth: yup
Sir_Brizz: LOL
Sir_Brizz: the irony
Sir_Brizz: that HL2 trailer for the Mac release
Sir_Brizz: "game ownership is no longer dictated by platform"
Sir_Brizz: yes it is, not linux
Sir_Brizz: :p
Tazer: You could totally make that into a hint for linux though
Sir_Brizz: indeed
Kame: haha, all these linux hints valve is throwing out are getting out of hand :p
jumbers: More hints?
Sir_Brizz: hehe
Tazer: Sir_Brizz
Sir_Brizz: I wonder if they are trying to see what michaellarabel will report on phoronix
Tazer: can you link me to the trailer?
Tazer: I haven't seen it
Sir_Brizz: hmm
Sir_Brizz: http://store.steampowered.com/video/220/5724
Sir_Brizz: there we go
michaellarabel: Haha
Sir_Brizz: STEAM CONFIRMED lol
michaellarabel: I do have it confirmed myself.
Tazer: Wat
Tazer: Does that translate to "I believe it with all of my heart!!!1!" or "I have secret information NONE OF YOU DO"
MPX: It would be a bad business decision not to port it to linux and Valve knows that.
MPX: If they are willing to bet on it is another matter
MPX: Google bets on alot of stuff and it pays off.
MPX: I saw a video of Gabe newell just now and he mentioned how Google bets on open platforms
Tazer: yess
Tazer: Come on gabe
MPX: and how they looked at others betting on open platforms
Tazer: You magnificent cocktease
MPX: And that had a role in the decision making they did
MPX: So yeah, they ARE watching
MPX: he was also talking about blogs.
Tazer: gaaaabe GIVE IT TO ME GAAAAAABEEEE WHYYYYYY
Tazer: AAAAAAAAAGHHH GAAAABEE
MPX: So they aren't completely behind the curtain community wise...I almost wrote cummunity
MPX: .... :S
Tazer: it probably had something to do with me
Tazer: that you did that
MPX: Probably...but then again, it's been a long time since I practised my English. I don't know any English speaking people
Tazer: aaaw
Tazer: cumminity is the better version of the word anyway :Sickfuck:
MPX: I hope you're right though michaellarabel. If you are, your site will have unbelivable many page hits once the news comes out as being one of the first, if not the first, to report on it
Tazer: yeah
MPX: Why? Cus they lay it down like it is?
MPX: :p
Tazer: Wait, let me see if I've got this right. michaellarabel, you own Phoronix or whatever?
Tazer: I'm new here and out of the loop, sooo
MPX: I found out about it thru reading the article on Steam
MPX: He writes the articles though...so it's a safe bet
Tazer: Ah
michaellarabel: Tazer: Both
Tazer: Ahaha, nice
michaellarabel: Tazer: Yes I own Phoronix
MPX: Seeing as you wont comment as to how you know it
Tazer: It's good to know that there's news we haven't yet heard all there is to hear on Steam, but obviously I won't ask for info on stuff you haven't released
MPX: Tells me that the sources does not want to be known
MPX: Meaning, it would get them in trouble...easy bet
michaellarabel: MPX: Not at this time
michaellarabel: Though at LinuxTag I might end up revealing bits, never know...
Tazer: Also, thanks for all the work you put into it, then! I'm relatively new to Linux and all but I have to say I heavily enjoy reading Phoronix
MPX: michaellarabel: I wish you would write longer articles though
MPX: Interesting articles..probably long enough...wish they were longer ;) Good stuff
michaellarabel: You're welcome Tazer, glad you enjoy it.
Tazer: I need to set up RSS feeds and stuff for it still
Tazer: I'm new to all the RSS stuff, haven't really figured it out
MPX: You've surely started the rumour of the decade though :D
michaellarabel: MPX: I already invest ~60 hours a week into Phoronix/PTS stuff and usually at least another 20 in other business projects. Unfortunately already doing like 3~5 news posts a day plus at least a major article everyday/every other day takes its toll for being able to write longer articles.
MPX: With steam on linux we will see better ATI/Nvidia drivers aswell...mmm
MPX: I'm not saying your not doing enough
MPX: It's just that once you taste good brownies, and you run out
michaellarabel: I'm just saying why articles aren't longer :P
MPX: You wish the person that hade made them, made twice as much ;)
Tazer: I wonder how Mac hardware will change as a result of this
michaellarabel: If there is a Phoronix bash during LinuxTag, I may consider dropping some major info then.
Tazer: O:
MPX: But you know michaellarabel, companies have stopped linux ports in the works before
Tazer: Nice c; Can I ask what LinuxTag is, exactly?
MPX: Don't wreck your rep....just some friendly advice :)
michaellarabel: LinuxTag is just a German Linux conference coming up in two weeks
Tazer: Ahhh
michaellarabel: MPX: It will come. People have already criticized since it's later than I originally reported when reporting it in 2008, but I am like 99.999999999% confident :)
MPX: michaellarabel: I have no doubt you're right. But people can be like hawks. But you probably already know that reading some of the comments...critics...
michaellarabel: Yeah
MPX: I wish Mark Shuttleworth would give a statement though
MPX: Like, Steam on linux would be great...Only has to be as easy as that
MPX: He has alot of money :) Money talks
michaellarabel: I can probably get him to say something at LinuxTag....
MPX: That would be great :)
Tazer: it would
Tazer: I feel like I picked the best time ever to join Linux seriously
MPX: He's basically the reason why my girlfriend, my mother and others I know are using Linux
Tazer: I've been using it like a month now between Ubuntu and Linux Mint, already my Windows parition is totally gone, and I spend every day excited and looking forward to announcements
MPX: The facebook surfers as I call em
Tazer: ~Only waiting for Grub2EFI to become totally independent so I can remove OS X too~
Tazer: Life ruuules~
Tazer: I have a question, though
Tazer: I use Compix(whore for glitterrrr) and I've set myself up so I can turn it on and off really easily in preparation for Steam
Tazer: Compiz*
Tazer: But does Compiz still cause a serious performance hit even when it's shut off? U:
MPX: Phoronix has an interesting article on that
Tazer: I read it~
Tazer: It was great c: But I was under the impression that that article is based on Compiz turned on
MPX: Then you should know :)
MPX: Compiz turned both on and off
MPX: comparable graphs.
MPX: It seems to have a difference with Nvidia cards.
Tazer: I must've missed that, then
Tazer: maaan, that's sorta dissapointing
MPX: The ATI driver sucks though so it does not matter. :P <3 Ati
Tazer: I don't think I can drop Compiz no matter what
MPX: Just wait for driver updates
Tazer: Yeah
Tazer: Wine plays my Steam games.....I suppose bearably
Tazer: So they should run fine even with Compiz on my box
Tazer: I'm just spoiled~~
MPX: I can't play source games thru steam. Again: ATI driver
Tazer: Tragic :c
MPX: Bug with the 5000 series of ATI cards
Tazer: You can't get a new graphics card either?
MPX: Dude
MPX: I already got the newest
MPX: :p
Tazer: aah ;w;
MPX: That is, I don't like NVidia. I still have a grudge towards them and how they handled 3DFX. Nor intel because of monopoly.
MPX: I run AMD/ATI
Tazer: I wouldn't know literally anything about any of those things
Tazer: I'm really vague on the whole corporation wars
MPX: Well, before, there was Amiga, Atari, and whatnot
MPX: Cyrix and whatnot as CPU choices
MPX: Olivetti instead of Dell and such
MPX: And there was a bunch to choose from when it came to Graphic Chips
Tazer: That sounds like it was horribly easy to get a crap card o_o
MPX: 3DFX was the best. Nvidia squeezed them and others out, gained a monopoly
MPX: I like choices...that's why I run linux
Tazer: Aaah, I see
Tazer: I have to say I feel the same way
MPX: Yeah....90's gave alot of choices
Tazer: sighs
MPX: Speaking of Choices, I miss Sega
Tazer: I missed that era so completely
Tazer: it's so sad
MPX: Don't worry, you are about to enter a new one
Tazer: Yes, true
MPX: Nintendo is back on top, AMD/ATI is gaining more and more marketshare
Tazer: Some day I will be the old days
Tazer: o; I thought ATI was as established as NVidia?
MPX: And alot of other things....read up on engadget to follow some of the indie stuff :)
MPX: No....NVIDIA was squeezing them out...then AMD bought them :)
MPX: Ati was dying :S
Tazer: ah
MPX: They just need to get their act together with the linux support. :S
Tazer: Yeah
MPX: And you are also entering a new era of teh internets :P
MPX: Will there be one codec to rule them all or will we have choices?
Tazer: Lawl, I was born in the internets
MPX: I really hope google pushes thru...
Tazer: I don't honestly feel I've ever felt alive in a point of my life where I somehow lacked the internets
Tazer: I know that's an addicted and obsessive thing to say, but if it's true
Tazer: Pushes through with what?
MPX: How so? Was your moms firewall down when your dad connected his cable thru the ethernet port? With no wireless there won't be any WEP/WPA security :P
Tazer: Haha! Nah, I meant more emotionally
MPX: Ah, I fondly remember the days without Cell phones...where you would make an appointment to meet somebody at a specific place at a specific time
Tazer: Of course that could just be teenage angst
Tazer: Cell phones :/
MPX: How did we ever manage without cellphones..
Tazer: Not a huge fan.
MPX: Yeah, tons of stress that
Tazer: I don't know
MPX: But also a life saver :)
MPX: Countless people have saved their lifes and others (car accidents and whatnot) by having a cellphone
Tazer: Yes c; I just really despise the whole texting thing that cellphones seem to stress now
Tazer: fucking, tiny keyboards and I can't type the number i want to call ;o;
MPX: I want an HTC
Tazer: HTC?
MPX: Can and never will afford one though
Sleepy_Coder: I don't take my cellphone on vacations.
Sleepy_Coder: I like there being no route to host.
Sleepy_Coder: >8D
MPX: Well, someday
MPX: Well
Tazer: Aww, don't be so negative
MPX: I've known plenty of people that were happy....If they for example got a phone call that somebody was dying in the hospital (family member, etc)
Tazer: ~Anything is possible when you believe~
MPX: So they could abort the vacation and travel home in time to have those few last words
MPX: It's sad to say "plenty" but yeah really, plenty
Tazer: yeah
Sleepy_Coder: Cell phones are of course a good thing in many instances, I just don't like it these days that everyone expects you to be so well-connected, especially when you don't want to be.
MPX: I understand and see your point and I totally agree
MPX: But that's the way of todays society :)
Sleepy_Coder: Let's make babies.
Tazer: wonders if he'll ever hit a technological generation gap
Sleepy_Coder: No one has ever agreed with me :<
MPX: Sorry for my bad english btw...it's my third tounge
Modplan: People can't seem to understand that some times you don't want to be contacted
Sleepy_Coder: :D
Tazer: I agree with you totally, Sleepy_Coder
Sleepy_Coder: BABY TIME
MPX: That's what the mute button is for :)
Tazer: But my response to people like that is generally "God fucking stop calling"
MPX: I always have my phone on mute with vibrate only on.
Sleepy_Coder: buwhahaha
Tazer: I have a really insanely obnoxious ring tone
Tazer: basically what it does is a tiny screechy voice that keeps screaming for me to take it out of my pocket
MPX: I want the intro music for Ski or Die on my cellphone
MPX: if I could get that...
MPX: Or some "Outrun" ring tone
Sleepy_Coder: It's kind of like when you join a gameserver for whichever game and just because the game supports voice chat people expect you to have a mic. This drives me insane in Left4Dead2 because sometimes I get kicked for not having a mic. Most of the players consider it so essential, yet a lot of the time the idiots are talking over the tell-tale sounds that signal an uncommon infected getting nearer.
MPX: I remember being at my friends house...he had just upgraded to a 386 SX 25, and finally....Outrun was running smoothly
MPX: I remember the CRT monitor giving off so much light it would light the entire room :D
Sleepy_Coder: hahaha
MPX: Amazing none of us have gone blind :D
Tazer: Sleepy:
Tazer: While you're right, in L4D2 atleast mics are pretty important
Tazer: I mean, you get tounged and swarmed and nobody notices
MPX: Sleepy_Coder: been there. I'm on rank 20 on a very large rank server
MPX: that is, l4d1.
Tazer: so you get to watch your person get mass raped by zombies because you have to type out "help???"
Sleepy_Coder: I think sometimes... just gets annoying when people are heckling you for not having a mic and you can't pay attention to the game because they're talking over the sound effects
MPX: If I play on another server, it does not matter if I kick ass...I sometimes hear "Kick the guy without a mic"
Sleepy_Coder: retarded teams :p
MPX: I type "Help" just as fast as somebody say it
MPX: Besides, ever heard of bind =?
Sleepy_Coder: Tbh, I consider myself a pretty quick typist and I stay with the group a lot :3 I rarely have to type help, though I can see your point for those who might not be as quick.
Sleepy_Coder: bind <3
MPX: bind f3 say "help"
Sleepy_Coder: They even have recorded player messages for calling for Help :D
MPX: True true :)
Sleepy_Coder: bind h 'vocalize PlayerHelp' or something like that
Tazer: true
Sleepy_Coder: I just really don't like people talking excessively I think ;p
Tazer: ~opposites~
Tazer: But then again I try not to talk a whole lot because I sound, like, three
Sleepy_Coder: Voice chat can be fun, but I don't like discriminate against people who don't have a mic, or encouraging people to use voice chat more :3
Sleepy_Coder: lol
MPX: I love it when my team owns (when I play with some certain people, nobody has been able to beat us)
Sleepy_Coder: encourage*
MPX: And somebody puts on techno music :D
Sleepy_Coder: lol
Sleepy_Coder: mic spam is fun if you're in the right mood for it :-)
MPX: Everybody just starts jumping around, while owning the other team...how? We watch eachothers backs :D
Tazer: has never been very good at L4D2
Sleepy_Coder: http://www.frys-electronics-ads.com/ads/2010/05/21/48056/Seagate-2TB-Serial-ATA-300-Hard-Drive I want.
Tazer: better at TF2 as a spy
Tazer: stabbity stabs~
Sleepy_Coder: die. :<
MPX: I got TF2
MPX: never played it
Sleepy_Coder: loves playing as sniper or scout in tf2
Tazer: I played it, I pretty much stopped after the spy/sniper update
Tazer: All anyone seemed to care about was hats and it was all so obnoxious
MPX: I only play l4d on steam...I got 184 games but...I love that game to death
MPX: I know every map inside out
MPX: Think I've done all ach.
Tazer: that is both the saddest and best thing
Tazer: xndidnfngksna wait what
Sleepy_Coder: I actually have been getting into playing on the few prophunt servers on TF2. You start out as a scout but when the game actually starts you randomly turn into a prop like a sign or barrel or tree, you then hide on the map, the other team is comprised of either pyros (mostly) or heavies (fewer). They spend 3 minutes trying to seek out and kill all the hidden prop-like players :-)
Tazer: Sleepy: there are 2 TB hard drives?!
Sleepy_Coder: I wish they had made that a real gametype
Tazer: FUUUUCK!
MPX: Tazer : I have alot of time for my girlfriend, washing clothes, doing the shopping, playing basketball, hanging out with my friends
Sleepy_Coder: I want it to consolidate my 2 x 500GB drives <3
MPX: I have good photo memory and ...well...I'm just good at fps games :)
Sleepy_Coder: I have fast reflexes >8D
MPX: I don't
Sleepy_Coder: Also a good shot, I think
MPX: I'm a sneaky bastard though
Sleepy_Coder: I own with the magnum in L4D2
Tazer: ooooh yes, the hide and seek games
MPX: I almost every time get perfect aims...helps
Tazer: I've wanted to play them
MPX: Tazer: Teamplay
Tazer: I played Pyro dodgeball for awhile and that was amazing fun
MPX: Most of the team distracts the others, two run on the side watching for those attacking from the air and the sides, while the other watches back n front
Tazer: the magnum is the best thing
Sleepy_Coder: I love it at the end of L4D2 matches when it displays the statistics. Usually I get an accuracy in the upper 60s (%), my headshots are always a bit low though, I aim for the chest more often.
Sleepy_Coder: Usually because the server lags so bad :<
MPX: I don't like l4d2 much :S
Sleepy_Coder: Hmm I hate certain things about it.
MPX: I'm not the biggest fan of the level designs :) But that's just my cup of tea :)
dandel: mpx, some of the bugs take too long on ati cards.
MPX: + I hate the crew, except for ellis
Tazer: Ellis is the most adorable thing
Tazer: is itt
MPX: dandel: I know :S I still won't go Nvidia though
MPX: I love Zoey :d
Tazer: is it bad that I secretely hope he and keith were lovers or something gay like that
dandel: ATI glsl on xbmc was broken until today when i talked to the dev and helped fix it.
Tazer: although that'd make it super sad ;~;
Sleepy_Coder: Taking too long for them to release DLCs when they promised them originally for L4D1, Hunters don't get to pounce as high anymore with their itty-bitty maps, tanks and chargers have strange areas of effect... even when you're clearly out of their range they still manage to hit you, ...
MPX: Dandel : Perhaps you can help fix this bug http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=22534
MPX: After reading some of the comments reffering to another bug
MPX: It seems like a nasty one :P
MPX: Sadly, I'm no coder
MPX: I will be one day, and my focus will be on linux.
dandel: mpx, the crash seems to be problems with texture formats
MPX: If I set it to Backbuffer, it works, but then everything is garbled because of well....the backbuffer I suppose
MPX: Waiting for a future ATI driver release is really not good enough for me.
MPX: That may mean a year from now.
MPX: Wow, sure went quiet :)
MPX: michaellarabel: Do you have any hints about steam for linux (like a candy) that you can give us at this time?
MPX: Doesn't matter how small the crumble :)
Tazer: ^aw, come on
MPX: No nagging though, I don't mind a no.
Tazer: It can't be fair to ask him to go against his practice yet :p
MPX: Haven't exactly earned anything, and you don't owe anything
Tazer: can't say he isn't curious though
MPX: I don't know what his principal on such a matter as that is up to each individual :D
MPX: I wonder what I should name my next cat :)
MPX: Got any ideas?
MPX: I'd have to run em with my GF :D My last cat got run over two days ago...her name was Chassie, named after my affection for cars (Chassis)
MPX: Never get a cat that requires to leave the house :) Small tip ^
MPX: Tazer?
Tazer: O:?
Tazer: oh!
Tazer: hmmm
Tazer: Girlcat or guycat?
MPX: Girl
MPX: Easier to play with
MPX: Guys usually are more aggressive with their claws ;)
Rednaxela: Girlcats are plenty agressive with biting though :P
MPX: I really want a British shorthair :D
MPX: aren't most girls ? :p
Tazer: I'm pretty weird with names, fair warning
Tazer: You could name her Zarite
Tazer: accent on e
MPX: I used to have one of these : http://www.katterian.se/img/norsk_skogkatt.jpg , also got run over sadly
MPX: What does that mean?
Tazer: Good question. I know it's african and it's the name of the main character in the book I'm reading right now
Tazer: The Island Under the Sea, by Isabel Allende
MPX: Ah :)
Tazer: Alternatively: Isadora :P
MPX: Hey, does Ubuntu-cola exist where you live?
Tazer: Ubuntu-cola?
MPX: I found it in a shop the other day
MPX: Yeah
Tazer: never heard of it, but I'd certainly try it :P
Tazer: Was it good?
MPX: Coke boxes :D
MPX: Yeah, it costs twice as much though
MPX: It was under the Fairtrade logo
MPX: Meaning, it's a good buy. You support something constructive
Tazer: Ah :O
MPX: It had the ubuntu logo on it and all :D The box was white, with the ubuntu logo on half the side and the Ubuntu name next to it with the fairtrade logo over it
Tazer: C:
MPX: I bought a few :P They stopped selling them here though...
Tazer: Is it affiliated to the distro or?
MPX: Must be
MPX: Used the ubuntu logo
Tazer: You can prolly get it off the Ubuntu site then
Tazer: is it tasty? :o
MPX: Don't think theyd be allowed to ship it out of the us and sell within and outside, if not :)
MPX: It tasted like cherry coke
MPX: I love DR. Pepper, so it was just up my alley :D
Tazer: awww man
Tazer: I like vanilla coke best
MPX: Never tried that one
MPX: I read it was so full of different new ingridients next to the old ones...
MPX: I consider it a hazard....lol
MPX: gOD HOW i HATE tvSHOP
MPX: Wow, caps lock
MPX: Either way, I love the Before and After pictures
MPX: In the before picture of a person, the person is pale, hair is fat and all
MPX: in the after pic you can clearly see the person has gotten a tan, dressed up, etc
MPX: Gotta love obvious marketing :D
MPX: Tazer?
Tazer: ??
Tazer: O:
Tazer: I wouldn't know
MPX: Valve just confirmed steam for Linux :OOOOOO
Tazer: wat
Tazer: What?!
MPX: No not really
MPX: Cruel joke :D
Tazer: kill you ;w;
MPX: *laughs ass off* :D
Tazer: cries
MPX: :D
