Phoronix IRC Log: 2010-04-27

Tommeh: michaellarabel: can you remove that stupid bloody 1minute-edit limit on your forums?
Tommeh: There's nothing gained by including it and it only serves to annoy me when I've made a typo and want to correct it.
Ivanovic: Tommeh: there is something gained
Ivanovic: Tommeh: many spambots in the phoronix forums work around the "you need 5 posts before posting links" rule by submitting empty posts or spam without links
Ivanovic: and then editing and adding links
Tommeh: Needs a better sign-up captcha then.
Ivanovic: captchas don't help
Tommeh: You shouldn't let the spam bots in - nevermind reactively restricting permissions to stop them from working.
Ivanovic: ever heard of pages that offer cracks and got a captcha?
Tommeh: They're always being improved :)
Ivanovic: those are often captchas the bots encounter and can't solve themselves
Ivanovic: so humans do solve the captchas when downloading cracks and the likes
Tommeh: From what I remember, aren't all the new forum accounts moderated on Phoronix anyway?
Ivanovic: no
Ivanovic: only when you include a link
Ivanovic: and after you got 5 posts, this is not the case anymore either
Tommeh: I wonder how other forums manage it? Bit-tech.net, kustompcs.co.uk - they both run vBulletin
Tommeh: And I do not have edit restrictions - I also don't see spam bots.
Ivanovic: no idea what they are using
Ivanovic: i just know what is the case at phoronix
Sonic1: soooo

Sonic1: I posted that around 3 hours ago
r4: they need to stop toying with us and just tell us wtf is going on :P
Sonic1: :P
