Phoronix IRC Log: 2009-12-02

Kano: hi michaellarabel , did you test vaapi yet on your psb box
michaellarabel: no kano, I am probably not even going to get around to turning on that box until I have access to the Gallium3D driver.
Kano: thats a boring driver, nobody will game with it anyway
Kano: a flash player with vaapi support would be more interesting
Kano: i tried vlc vaapi lately, no go with ati at all btw. nvidia with wrong colors
Kano: so vlc is not the first choice for vaapi tests...
Kano: i could not get gnash to compile yet however
Kano: then i would have tested it too
AidanLinz: If I gamed I'd want to game wih multi pointer X
bkero: Doesn't MPX in it's current implementation only handle 2 active windows at once, not both pointers in the same window?
Kano: michaellarabel: did you mail the author of the driver you want to test?
Kano: michaellarabel: isnt it already shipped with u 8.04?
michaellarabel: Kano: I will only test when I can test both drivers at once.
Kano: i would test video playback alone if you send it to me ;)
michaellarabel: video playback will be tested when I do everything elkse, but I have plenty of other work to get done before I only partially test something.
Kano: i guess nobody would use ion to play games so why should somebody do that with psb
Kano: at least not with linux
Guest4528: hi do you know if its possible to have hdmi audio through a nvidia gt220?
Kano: Guest4528: do you have that card?
Kano: cat /proc/asound/cards
Kano: i would check then
Guest4528: id like to know before buying it
Kano: well somebody wanted to give me one to try, but did not receive yet
Guest4528: ive heard it passes the audio through the pci-e port
Guest4528: but doesnt have an audio chip
Kano: pass thru was for older chips
Kano: there you had to connect it to onboard spdif
Kano: series 9+
Guest4528: yep
Guest4528: but i heard this one passes through pci-e
Guest4528: cause its got no spdif
Kano: dont you think it works like ati?
redeeman: it just has an audio chip then
redeeman: most likely
Kano: there the cards have just itself audio support
Guest4528: but it also says its got no audio chio
redeeman: well its gotta have one or the other
Guest4528: or pass through the pci-e like it says
Kano: Guest4528: well ati cards dont have got a soundcard sticker on it too
redeeman: Guest4528: no, that is not possible
redeeman: Guest4528: it cannot route the signal from the soundcard like that
Kano: 2 [HDMI ]: HDA-Intel - HDA ATI HDMI
redeeman: so it will have its own digital soundcard
Kano: HDA ATI HDMI at 0xd0110000 irq 17
Kano: but it is there
redeeman: its probably just got a pcie registered soundcard
redeeman: like ATI does
Guest4528: it says it needs a soundcard either from the mobo or a dedicated one
Guest4528: wait a minute ill give you the link
redeeman: then the driver must do some obscenely funky shit
redeeman: which seems unbelievable
Guest4528: thats what i thought, it may not work in linux
Kano: well most likely i can check remotely tomorrow, but not now
Kano: but only if a device is there
Guest4528: http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3657&p=3
Kano: well passing audio over pci bus most likely means that it has integrated sound
Kano: Guest4528: should be simple
Kano: http://www.vdrportal.de/board/thread.php?postid=853558
Kano: if not autodetected just patch it
Kano: looks like a straight forward patch
Guest4528: thanks, so you say youll be able to test it soon?
Kano: not with hdmi
Kano: i dont have got a tv
Kano: but when you look at the patch, it is really simple
Guest4528: when i get it can you help me if i run into trouble?
Kano: ask your distro ;)
Guest4528: ill install suse on that pc
Guest4528: itll be an intel core i5 750
Kano: well wrong choice if you wanted that i would help you ;)
Guest4528: with a gigabyte p55m-ud4
Guest4528: thanks
