Phoronix IRC Log: 2009-11-16

bkero: michaellarabel: aye
nikolam: hi i got package update for phoronix test suite this morning (64-bit Xubuntu Hardy LTS 8.04)
nikolam: But it is saying package is not signed
nikolam: Anyone knows where I get gpg key for phoronix repository?
Fujk: is it safe to buy 5870?
redeeman: Fujk: if you're in the market for a paperweight, yes
gimzo: fglrx 11 will support it ?
redeeman: define "support"
gimzo: will xorg start, and will xv work?
gimzo: that's most important for me :)
redeeman: will GL work? will it crash randomly? will it suddenly not work with a new kernel? will they ever fix bugs?
Fujk: redeeman: can you at least get two monitors with compiz effects and stuff?
redeeman: i would imagine no
Fujk: or four monitors with xfire
Fujk: due to the drivers?
redeeman: obviously, the hardware can almost certainly do it
Fujk: if dual/compiz works I could just dualboot
redeeman: fglrx is a piece of garbage
redeeman: its worse than garbage
Fujk: what about 48xx
gimzo: it's better than before :)
maligor: 9.10 supports 5800
redeeman: if fglrx had been around when the dictionary was created, there'd be a word worse than garbage, and crap
maligor: and I wouldn't listen to redeeman
maligor: he's full of garbage
Fujk: "supports" does anyone actually RUN IT
redeeman: yeah, feel free to ignore me, I will be the one laughing when you're either hopelessly dualbooting and/or having other issues :)
maligor: redeeman, why would anyone want to run windows games on wine?
redeeman: so that they don't have to reboot before/after playing a game?
gimzo: well, I'm planning to get 5800 for games, and I'll have 4200 onboard and x700 somewhere around, so I'm covered on linux :)
maligor: Fujk, well, I have a 3870
maligor: native games tend to work fine
maligor: I can't comment on wine since I don't really use it
bkero: fglrx or radeon?
Fujk: so nobody has 5870 running on dual monitors with compiz effects on desktop mode yet
Fujk: anyone running Geforce GTX 275 / dual monitors? works with compiz etc.? I'm thinking of chosing it over ATI 4890 just to get away from driver issues.
redeeman: i don't think you can do dualmonitor with compiz properly
Fujk: really?
Fujk: what do you mean properly?
redeeman: i mean i don't think compiz supports it
Fujk: I find youtube vids with 3 monitors
Fujk: and 6
Fujk: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=6117453#post6117453
redeeman: i don't know though
Fujk: I guess it will take some tweaking, but if nvidia barely can do it, ati probably cant
redeeman: nvidia isn't just a green garden
redeeman: 2d is very slow with nvidia
Fujk: even on a monster such as gtx 275?
redeeman: yes, its driver issue
Fujk: I feel no issues with compiz on my dell laptop inspiron 1525 :S
Fujk: I need to decide on a friggin card until 5870 is cheaper and more supported
redeeman: probably because your configuration hides the real issues
redeeman: for instance, when you resize a window, does the contents gets resized as an image, or does the window get resized?
Fujk: umm not sure, don't have it with my atm
redeeman: also, given you use compiz you probably use gnome
redeeman: which doesn't really make use of 2d acceleration
Fujk: yes
Fujk: I see
redeeman: but if you fire up stuff like KDE4 and Qt4 based things, you will really see the inadequacy of the nvidia driver
redeeman: for instance
Fujk: I never use kde
redeeman: resizing the kickoff menu can take seconds
