Phoronix IRC Log: 2009-11-08

seanius: anyone here get linux/xorg working with a radeon hd 4200 igp?
seanius: i can get xvideo with the radeon driver and audio wiht the radeonhd driver, but not both...
Ivanovic: seanius: read the radeonhd manpage
Ivanovic: probably you have to force enable dri in the version of radeonhd you got
Ivanovic: without dri enabled there is no acceleration at all (no 2d/Xv)
seanius: Ivanovic: i have it enabled, but it fails to initialize
Ivanovic: ah, this sounds lovely
Ivanovic: which version of "what" are you using?
Ivanovic: as in: kernel, radeonhd, xorg-server
Ivanovic: what is the respective part of your xorg.conf and what is the log output
Ivanovic: without this info debugging things is difficult
Ivanovic: and you might be better off asking in #radeonhd
Ivanovic: that is: IIRC in plain radeon there is no support for audio via hdmi as of yet, not 100% sure though
seanius: xorg 7.4, kernel 2.6.30-1, radeonhd a bit short of master's HEAD
seanius: Ivanovic: yeah, the support matrix says "WIP" for radeon/HDMI audio
seanius: my xorg.conf: http://paste.debian.net/51006/
seanius: and i'm using the drm off git://anongit.freedesktop.org/~agd5f/drm
seanius: but if you think it's better i'll mosey over to #radeonhd :)
seanius: thanks
Ivanovic: regarding the latest radeonhd docs it should work with this config
Ivanovic: though regarding drm you should test with plain 2.6.30.x first
Ivanovic: Xv accel was already possible with this one (at least it *should* be)
Ivanovic: or you could try upgrading to 2.6.31.x, there it should most likely work, though no 3D yet
seanius: Ivanovic: yeah getting 2.6.31 might be the easiest way out here i'm thinking
seanius: you need DRI for Xv accel right?
Ivanovic: just as a test though, since it should already work with the drm included in 2.6.30 (*not* the one from agd5f but "mainline")
Ivanovic: yes, you need dri for Xv
seanius: the problem with drm was that my card's pci id wasn't in the database in any version of drm except the agd5f repo in the r6xx-r7xx-3d branch
seanius: i'll take a peek in the kernel source see if it looks different
seanius: putting together a new htpc, just in time for mythtv .22 :)
seanius: hrm... same problem: (EE) RADEONHD(0): [dri] CP_INIT failed
seanius: andi have the firmware installed
gkatsev: hey, would you guys recommend an ati radeon 48xx or an nvidia gtx 260 for best linux compatability?
Azerthoth: nvidia ... they atleast dont drop support for cards
gkatsev: Azerthoth: ok, yeah, the 5770 didnt get support in CC9.10 and i am having problems with it on windows as well. I cant change the screen resolution...
gkatsev: Azerthoth: thanks, i think will go with that
