johannes1: hi, which is a fairly recent chipset, that takes the least possible watt?
Paralityk_: amd/intel?
johannes1: doesnt matter
johannes1: Paralityk this wasnt meant to be sarcastic I am serious, both amd and intel offer low power processors
Paralityk: johannes1, oh sry, was afk ;D
Paralityk: so hmm, consider GF9400 (chipset+gpu)
johannes1: gpu isnt needed, I even save power by using a compact flash disk instead of an hdd
johannes1: I dont want to use an Atom board, as the used chipsets usually take too much power and I want to be able to change the cpu later
Ivanovic: johannes1: what exactly do you want to build?
Ivanovic: if you want to build some *really* low power home server: try the sheevaplug
johannes1: Ipcop/Ipfire firewall with snort and clamav
Ivanovic: johannes1: have a look at the sheevaplug at wikipedia and the links there
Ivanovic: that tiny little thing costs 100$ (plus shipping, eg to germany including shipping you end at ~100€) and has a fairly powerfull cpu (1.2ghz arm)
Ivanovic: enough ram for the stuff you want (512MB) and comes with a linux preinstalled
Ivanovic: gbit ethernet plus 1 usb2.0 plug which you can eg use with some 2.5" port powered hd
johannes1: Ill have a look at it
Ivanovic: you should end at 10W energy usage at peaks
Ivanovic: and have a well usable server for below 200$
johannes1: I heard that the firewall itself doesnt need that much processing power, but snort and clamav need a lot, so I am actually not sure if an arm cpu is capable of doing this, I would also need 3 NICs
johannes1: thanks for the link though, this might be perfect for my grandparents
Ivanovic: 3nics?
Ivanovic: hmm, what about the c3 hardware?
Ivanovic: that is via x86 boards
johannes1: red/green/orange
Ivanovic: they can be damn low power, too
Ivanovic: a friend of mine has such a system with 3 gbit ethernet ports
johannes1: those cost a lot of money, dont they?
Ivanovic: more than the sheevaplug, yeah
Ivanovic: the whole sys is probably somewhere at 300€ or the likes
johannes1: I thought about something like this: http://geizhals.at/eu/a287179.html and a low power sempron, but dont know what chipset would take the least wattage
johannes1: well, this one was a bad example as it has an igp onboard
johannes1: http://geizhals.at/eu/a215823.html I thought about this too
Ivanovic: yes, in theory the nforce boards for am2 are the way to go for low power systems
Ivanovic: *but* IIRC you should go for the 630 nforce chip
Ivanovic: some months ago i built my dad some new office pc especially ment for "low power usage", used some asrock ALiveNF7*something* board
Ivanovic: IIRC i used some athlon x2 4850e or something like this
johannes1: sounds great, I may use it with a sempron
Ivanovic: though take care to use a *good* power supply with a good efficency or your power usage will go through the roof
Ivanovic: that is: depending on the hardware you will build in it might make sense to get some 120W PSU thingie
