Phoronix IRC Log: 2009-10-26

mtc: have been looking at the -radeon and -radeonhd packages in ubuntu karmic
mtc: noticed the -radeon driver is heavily favored
mtc: made me wonder what advantages the -radeonhd driver has, since the http://wiki.x.org/wiki/RadeonFeature shows -radeon even more feature complete
Kano: michaellarabel: why do you think you need to reboot when you install the experimental mesa drivers?
Kano: michaellarabel: that works LIVE
Kano: after install it directly works, if you want to use compiz restart gdm
Kano: for testing quakelive you only need to install that
Kano: mesa is userspace not kernel related
michaellarabel: Kano: I just reboot for simplicity sake
michaellarabel: rather than just logging out and logging back in
Kano: i avoid reboots if possible
Kano: because i prefer testing other distros live only
michaellarabel: I avoid reboots on my main systems, but my test systems I just don't care
Kano: you can test that without install
Kano: thats the purpose
Kano: http://alt.fedoraproject.org/pub/alt/nightly-composes/desktop
Kano: fedora is just too stupid to call the image always the same
Kano: not even a symlink
Kano: hi redeeman
redeeman: hello
Kano: btw. tested grub2 a bit yesterday and found this issue
Kano: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lupin/+bug/460740
Kano: maybe fixed with final
Kano: did you ever use grub2 loopback mode?
redeeman: nope
redeeman: i didn't know it supported loopback
Kano: well it even supports vars
Kano: informer you had to use ${var}, now you can use $var too
Kano: http://kanotix.com/files/fix/grub2/config/70_ubuntu_iso.not-shown
Kano: that works now
Kano: the example is just old, for karmic you need initrd.lz now
Kano: 9.04 needs initrd.gz
Kano: does not work today with ext4 however
Kano: leave out hte de overrides if you want english
redeeman: i don't have any system using ext4
Kano: i like speed ;)
redeeman: i like filesystem integrity
Kano: i rsync to other hds/systems
Kano: but i do not backup just pure linux install with temp data
Kano: those can use ext4
mtc: what is the brand-and-model of a solid R500-chipset based card in wide availability that has the most support from the -radeon drivers, at this time?
Kano: would be really stupid to buy anything older than r700 now
Kano: if it has to be ati
mtc: spent a year waiting for support for the r600 chip and now looking at more errors in ubuntu karmic
Kano: nvidia is the way to go
mtc: wanting to use the free software drivers kano
Kano: you have got r600 already?
mtc: yes
Kano: then you dont need to buy anything
Kano: fedora is more easy to use 3d however
Kano: there it even works live
mtc: karmic comes with the -radeon drivers, do you think I will have better support with the -radeonhd drivers
Kano: no
redeeman: ubuntu has probably fucked up the drivers
redeeman: the radeon driver should be fine
Kano: no, they did not update the drm
redeeman: and should have R600/700 now with suffeciently new kernel and version
Kano: fedora did
Kano: thats the diff
mtc: ubuntu disabled the r600 3d driver
Kano: 2.6.31 is too old for 3d on r600+
Kano: if you want to use 3d with 31 it you have to merge an experimental git repo
mtc: on the other hand, I could probably get an R500 chipset card for thirty bucks
Kano: why?
Kano: if it must be ubuntu use that xorg-edgers-ppa
mtc: that way I would not have to fiddle around with experimental git repos to get 3d
Kano: and maybe a mainline kernel
mtc: yeah - that is what the edgers website says, 2.6.32-rc5 kernel
Kano: did you try it
mtc: did not try it
Kano: then do before you buy crap
zooko: Dear Phoronix folks: way to go on marrying PTS and git bisect! Whoo!
Riotta: hi
Riotta: any phoronix editor around?
Riotta: is it possible you will review something I would like personally you to review (some piece of hardware)?
Riotta: like some fairly new motherboard
Kano: then buy it *g*
fireboot: Hi
fireboot: I own a eeepc 1005HA-M coming with an intel IGP. I'm a bit lost with all these video decoding API's (vdpau, va-api, xvmc, etc...). Is there any way to offload video decoding with my IGP ?
bkero: If it has a GMA950, no. If it has an X4500M-HD(maybe not -HD), yes.
fireboot: bkero: it has a GMA450
fireboot: there is no way to offload (even partially) the video decoding process ?
bkero: YOu can try building vaapi support
bkero: xv already offloads part of it
fireboot: sorry, it's a GMA945GME
bkero: That's a GMA950.
bkero: You're shit out of luck.
fireboot: even vaapi doesn't work ?
bkero: No
bkero: Shitty old intel video hardware
fireboot: bkero: :(
bkero: Hey, blame intel
bkero: and asus
bkero: and microsoft
fireboot: microsoft ?
fireboot: why?
bkero: They set hardware limitations on what they sell XP on
bkero: One of the limitations is DX9 integrated hardware. The 950 is the last DX9 integrated thing Intel made. Back in...2005?
michaellarabel: hi bkero
bkero: yo
michaellarabel: Have you been able to finish off that gnupg patch yet?
bkero: Not yet. I've got a half finished patch.
bkero: Deciding how I want to handle temporary installation of the two dependency packages.
michaellarabel: look at like encode-ogg test profile maybe? with its dependency setup
bkero: THanks for the comparison. THat'll help out a lot.
bkero: fireboot: Yes, you can blame microsoft for artificially limiting the market. http://www.vista123.net/content/maximum-hardware-specifications-small-notebook-pc-netbook-windows-7-starter-and-home-basic-c
bkero: So now ewe'll see a bunch of 10.2 inch netbooks with 1gb RAM, 250gb hard drive, and a single core processor.
bkero: Because that's what vendors will have to make to get subsidized windows.
fireboot: It's sad, because I don't windows on my eee at all
bkero: Yea, but for speccing new hardware, most vendors will go by shit like that.
fireboot: sad being limited thanks to an OS I don't even use :(
bkero: Thank Asus for following it
Riotta: is there any ati linux user here?
Kano: Riotta: all left the room ;)
Riotta: I'm wanna buy motherboard for lets say HTPC purposes wth for example ati IGP chip
Riotta: like HD4200 or 3200
Riotta: I'm wondering is there some working acceleration for HD movies on linux for those cards (don't care if it's closed or open driver really)
Kano: haha
Kano: nvidia is the way to got for this purpose
Riotta: yeah I noticied that it got vdpau
bkero: or S3 :P
Riotta: I actually got nvidia card (in my current pc) and already tested that on xbmc :P
Riotta: shame that ati didn't want to give similar feature a go
bkero: My ion box works with boxee just fine.
bkero: ATI has xvba, but it's never materialized.
Riotta: yeah ION is another thing which I'm considering
Kano: never is only correct for the normal users
Kano: it was used for oems
Riotta: good to know
Kano: vdpau is much more improved
bkero: vaapi works well if you have a dx10 intel card
bkero: although isn't in any stable versions iirc
Kano: bkero: you know that vaapi only works with mpeg2 with g/q45
Kano: so basically currently useless
bkero: Kano: Works on MPEG4 for me.
Kano: funnyly the best card to test vaapi is nvidi
Kano: bkero: gma 500?
bkero: X4500M-HD
Kano: no way
Riotta: laptop?
Kano: bkero: vainfo
bkero: It's not in any released version, but check shit out of repos and you can build it
bkero: Machine's not up right now
Kano: bkero: i tested q45
Kano: max. is MPEG2Main/Simple VAEntrypointVLD
bkero: Here's some shit. http://www.splitted-desktop.com/~gbeauchesne/mplayer-vaapi/
Riotta: btw which is better in your opinion boxee or xbmc?
Kano: bkero: i use vaapi mplayer
bkero: MPEG-4 AVC (H.264)
Kano: boot your system
bkero: I'm in class.
Kano: show me vainfo
bkero: I'm in class.
Kano: bkero: i mailed the dev of 965-video driver. he told me h264 support is planned for next year
Kano: so you must be back from the future ;)
bkero: Guess this core 2 is decoding 1080p at idle by itself then
Kano: bkero: whats the correct way to use vaapi
bkero: What do you mean?
Kano: the syntax you use it
bkero: I don't remember. Probably -vo vaapi -va vaapi
bkero: Once again, fuck off. I'm in class.
Kano: haha
Kano: well that was correct for intel
Kano: http://kanotix.com/files/fix/mplayer-vaapi-latest-1.txt
Riotta: shame he isn't from future
Riotta: :<
Kano: you can use that with nvidia
Kano: then you get even osd
Kano: if you want to use it with g45 you have to enable the use of the older snapshot
Kano: which is disabled with #
Kano: thats how i test it with karmic
Kano: the only chip that has native vaapi support is gma 500 / Poulsbo
Kano: but i can not test this one
bkero: http://cgit.freedesktop.org/libva/tree/i965_drv_video ?
Kano: yes this one, it is a bit patched when you use it from the spl. des. site
Kano: my script enables the driver to install there, which is not default
Kano: compared to vdpau even the "best" nvidia wrapper does not handle h264 level 5.1, only 4.1 and does not support deinterlace
valan: hi
soreau: Hey, I didn't even know there was a #phoronix until now ;)
soreau: Hi :)
valan: me neither!
valan: hmm is it dead in here?
soreau: I am looking for the wayland git repo which claim is made it exists on freedesktop.org here http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=xorg_wayland&num=1
soreau: Anyone know where to find the wayland code?
Zohar: hey all, im building myself a new desktop, and just for fun, i want to see how fast i can get ubuntu to boot up
Zohar: so im looking for some input on componentry.
Zohar: i figure there is 2 ways to achieve insane boot speeds: coreboot and a ssd to boot
Kano: you got a supported board for coreboot?
Zohar: i havnt bought anything yet
Zohar: i was going to go with an i7, on a gigabyte mobo, so it might be a bit difficult
Zohar: kano, they sell mobos preinstalled with coreboot, right? my concern is how flexible is it
Kano: did not see one
Kano: i7 is certainly not supported by corebot, only amd boards
Zohar: but im also interested in what filesystem i should use with a ssd
Kano: ext4
Zohar: ext4, really?
Zohar: its not optomized for solid state though...?
soreau: I found the wayland code
soreau: Thanks for no one responding to my question :P
