Phoronix IRC Log: 2009-07-28
Kano: hi michaellarabel , when you prepare the tests like ffmpeg then it seems it is not compiling using make -jX
Tplane37: Um....I screwed up big time and could use some assistance in recovering the data on my 1 TB, particularly ISO, RAR, ZIP, EXE, DOC, and PDF files....ISO's and RAR are esential as this was my backup drive!
Tplane37: FYI: I Googled "IRC, Data Recovery" and your site was the first on the list :D
monreal: it may be useful if you could detail what exactly "screwed up big time" means
monreal: also, filesystem in use would be great to know
Tplane37: oh, sorry, been up all night
Tplane37: I was doing a low level format on my PC, in the process, the drive letters changed in Windows Recovery along the way. I intended to delete the Partition, create a new partition, and format my *) GB drive which was my . Along the way when Windows XP Setup loaded from the disk, it gave my External 1 TB HHD the drive designation of . I deleted the partition on my 1T, and created a new one, but stopped before formating it.
Tplane37: *)gb=80gb
Tplane37: Once I reloaded Windows XP Pro on my machine, I tried using Partition Table Doctor 3.5 and is at least recognized the drive, but the partitions it found were both Linux based (never had Linux System on my machines) and each were only 5 MB.
Tplane37: I am wondering if I should format the drive to at least get the PC to recognize the drive to access it with one of the other 7 apps I have located online. But at the same time, I am afraid that will screw up things even more
maligor: well, there's testdisk too
Tplane37: What pisses me off even more is that I have been dealing with PCs for 15+ years and I develop for Windows Mobile Devices....so I KNOW BETTER!....but there's the story, can anyone assist or reccomend a program to at least recover the file extentions I mentioned?
maligor: it can find lost partitions
maligor: dunno why phoronix would be first on data recovery tho :P
maligor: phoronix is largely a unix hardware site
maligor: or rather linux/solaris
maligor: who cares about big iron ;)
Tplane37: maybe it's trying to tell me to get away from Windows so I stop getting virii from WIndows Update causing me to wipe my drives to get rid of them?
maligor: shrugs
maligor: no tools for windows mobile on linux afaik
Tplane37: then I never would have been in that screen to screw up
Tplane37: we have been pondering getting a Linux based to run on a WinMo device though, but none of us are experienced enough in Linux base to write/modify an OS for the devices
maligor: they'd be arms probably
maligor: don't think windows mobile works on others
Tplane37: yeah, ARM Processors...ours actually run dual processors
Tplane37: dual 400's
Tplane37: 64 MB RAM :(
maligor: if you can get a serial link and preferrably jtag, it shouldn't be too hard ;)
Tplane37: "jtag"?
maligor: largely depends on what it uses for video and other stuff
maligor: jtag is a low level debugging interface standard
Tplane37: it uses a variation of WIndows Media Player for video and audio playback, and Pocket Internet Explorer/Outlook for the touchscreen and navigating the device
maligor: anyway, testdisk might help you recover the partition
maligor: but it might also totally refurbish it
maligor: since it's destructive partition recovery, the optimal way to do recovery is to make a image of the whole disk
Tplane37: we do (well did until I messed up that drive) have software to debug via a COM through USB connection...and I am DLing Testdisk now....hopefully something will happen on the positive side of the coin
Tplane37: but can I make an image of a disk that is not recognized by the OS because I did not format it afer deleting/creating new partition?
maligor: dunno
maligor: in linux you can pretty easily by dumping the device
maligor: but it'll result in a 1TB image
Tplane37: the image from my local HHD's was on that drive LOL, I used it for my library of backups and mobile software
maligor: well, what can I say, if you don't have a spare 1tb space, you can just try it and pray or find recovery specialists
Tplane37: possibly load backtrack 4 on my flash drive and come around that way? and having a 1tb image might be a snag since it is the largest drive I have, and everything I have read states not to recover your files to the drive you a recovering from (overwrites data being recovered)
maligor: http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk is the software I referred to too
Tplane37: thanks for your help none the less. I will keep searching....I can recover some files, but the ISO/RARs hasn't been the ones recovered as of yet
Tplane37: yeah, DLed and about to try it on other PC
maligor: I've used it once successfully when I overwrote the disk header with a file once
maligor: one of those oops moments
Tplane37: If you get bored and want the challenge of attmpting to put a Linux base on a Smartphone/PDA....we are over at #forcedevelopments on freenode...you're welcome there :D
Tplane37: thanks again
maligor: I don't have any ;P
maligor: I just have symbians
Tplane37: well, somebody might....from everything I have heard about Linux and Unix, it would be unreal replacing Windows Mobile with it, and I have yet to find anyone who has tried to....or at least I haven't found anyone that will admit it
Tplane37: off to try TestDisk
maligor: android runs linux
maligor: maemo also
Tplane37: did it? hmmm, we are putting those on WinMo for some reason...now I have more to research after this fiasco. I know HTC is doing major tests with new Android based devices, and have released a couple in Europe/Asia, and awaiting FCC aproval in the US
maligor: never done anything on android but the devel demos on them look pretty fantastic
Tplane37: well, it detected the drive and the size...good start.....
maligor: heh
Tplane37: but says I have 2 Linux 5 MB Partitions LOL...that's the same thing the Partition Table Doctor came up with...no Linux on that PC or this one....
maligor: I think it has some option to discard it
Tplane37: I didn't see one...I am going to go ahead and delete the partition again and then run TestDisk again and see if it recognizes a list of deleted partitions...nothing has been written to the HHD since all of this happened
maligor: deeper search I guess
maligor: it shouldn't care about existing partition maps
Tplane37: digging in...and that was the deeper search....the quick search didn't work because it didn't list a partition in the window to search through
Tplane37: there we go...now it is at least analyzing the drive....no partitions set now....crossing fingers
maligor: seems to be a japanese only device
maligor: same 8152 tho
maligor: blah, wrong channel :P
netsurf3: anyone got a jittering in some games?
netsurf3: its a high fps but the game appears to drop frames heavily then pick them up again
Tplane37: digging deeper.....takes a long time to search 1tb...LOL
Tplane37: DLing the newest Harry Potter movie for the 7 yr old...he doesn't know it yet though
slaine_: Isn't it a bit dark for a 7yr old ?
Tplane37: oops, that last post was in the wrong channel....
Tplane37: [11:22] <@Tplane37> Found the lost partition, says it recovered, loadedback up boot sector that SEAGATE AUTO SAVED!....rebooting for changes totake effect....crossing fingers, but it even had the old drive name with it....:D:D:D:D:D
Tplane37: and it is auto playing now!
Tplane37: and confirmed....I have my 1 TB back from the grave!
sandeen: michaellarabel, FWIW it looks like i'm no longer seeing those error logs on the apache test. but also just FYI, I'd drop it as a filesystem test; it does not touch the disk
Tplane37: Thank you , thank you very much
maligor: what?
maligor: testdisk worked?
sandeen: michaellarabel, this is pretty easy to see by running the test on a separate drive, and doing "iostat /dev/sdb 1" to see that there is no io happening during the test.
Tplane37: yes maligor...worked great....just took a long time because of the size of the drive...had to use the deeper setting and delete the newly created partition
Tplane37: but it worked! (I am thrilled to death, can you tell)
michaellarabel: sadeen: Okay, thanks for the heads up with that
Tplane37: I deleted a partition and created a new partition, ended up deleting the partition and leaving it with no partition for is to find the old on I deleted in the beginning....ran it through the basic scan, then the deeper, then again after deleting the new partition....
Tplane37: it recovered the partion I orgigonally deleted with EVERYTHING, even the drive name
Tplane37: had a bad boot sector, and it fixed that too
Tplane37: That program looks so simple, but was definately very useful. That is going on all of my Flash Drives and a CD....just to be safe
Kano: hi bkero , where are your benchmarks?
Kano: bkero: test against: http://global.phoronix-test-suite.com/?k=profile&u=kano-6627-14842-17066
Kano: or somebody else who likes
Kano: best use git
Kano: michaellarabel: i just tried to install universe-cli, fails with boost missing
Kano: on minion
michaellarabel: boost should be installed by PTS External Dependencies
Kano: will it does not work
Kano: http://paste.debian.net/42869
Kano: latest git code
Kano: also you might disable asking for mirror
Kano: when i selected batch mode and only configured batch mode with last 3 entries off then the default for ask for mirror was true
Kano: also in suites view you have got universe twice
Kano: i guess the libboost thing is similar to last libboost problem
Kano: that my system does NOT install recommended packages and yours does. in that case when you check for depends and then install you miss certain packages
Kano: testing depends on a system with your preconfig is bad, as it will not revail correct depends
michaellarabel: so when in batch mode you don't want mirror prompting?
Kano: of course not
Kano: do you think i want to sit in front of the pc
Kano: for minion, you create a dir without -p, clean build dir before maybe
Kano: rm -rf build
Kano: well one test...
Kano: apt-cache show libboost-dev
Kano: then you see the recommends
Kano: in theory you could need to test for easy recommends 1 file
Kano: each
Kano: to get all
Kano: of course not for the doc, but for the dev
Kano: 11 recommends
Kano: then this will never happen
Kano: minimum is the iostreams
Kano: libboost-iostreams-dev
tuxedo: nvidia-blob 190.xx sucks
Kano: tuxedo: what problems do you have got with it
tuxedo: X Server crash on every workload
maccam94: tuxedo: which card/driver version?
tuxedo: 190.18
tuxedo: video[nVidia Corporation GeForce 9500 GT @ Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] RS780 Host Bridge]
Kano: michaellarabel: maybe: /usr/lib/libboost_iostreams.so : libboost-iostreams-dev
Kano: for libboost as minimum fix for minion
maccam94: tuxedo: well your options are 190.09, 190.16, or today's 185.18.29 drivers
Kano: tuxedo: i can not verfiy that problem
Kano: maccam94: you forgot 190.18
maccam94: he's using 190.18
Kano: ok
Kano: well i have got no issues
Kano: benchmarks work ;)
maccam94: you have a 9500gt?
tuxedo: lol
Kano: http://global.phoronix-test-suite.com/?k=profile&u=kano-20279-12391-32594
Kano: no something better
maccam94: well you can't really make a comparison then
maccam94: :-\
Kano: and something slower ;)
Kano: 6800 gt runs with it too
maccam94: sometimes certain cards have issues, or certain configurations
Kano: do you get xid errors in dmesg?
tuxedo: me no
tuxedo: well i downgraded the driver to 185.18.14
tuxedo: and works very fine
tuxedo: with xorg 1.6.2.901 (10602901)
Kano: michaellarabel: hmm, it seems minion has another problem, i begins to compile, but does not finish. have to check why
tuxedo: is sick of running betas
tuxedo: back to winblows 7
maligor: mmm.. windows 7 hasn't been officially released retail yet, hence the only version you could legally be running is 'RC' :P
Kano: well why did ms provide md5sums for unofficial downloads then
maligor: heh, those are for RTM
Kano: michaellarabel: did you look at the install.sh or minion, that will not work usually when failed first time. maybe rm -rf minion-0.8.1 before extracting it
tuxedo: maligor i got my RTM-zukona-official from technet
maligor: heh, cute
maligor: does technet hand out keys too?
tuxedo: no
maligor: so it's a trial mode
tuxedo: im just testing it for 30 dayz
maligor: you can test it longer than that
Kano: you can 3x rearm it
tuxedo: lol
maligor: it's the best windows they've made tho
maligor: except for a bad case of dialog hell
tuxedo: grand theft windows
maligor: tuxedo, the rearming is built-in feature
tuxedo: yeah i know
maccam94: tuxedo: why not 185.18.29?
maccam94: that's the latest official release
tuxedo: im going to made an ebuild
tuxedo: is not in portage yet
michaellarabel: k
tuxedo: bbl
Kano: michaellarabel: i do not get it, when i try similar commands manually then it compiles, but when i use pts then i get
Kano: michaellarabel: http://paste.debian.net/42873
michaellarabel: Kano: yeah, I am not sure either
tuxedo: lol
Kano: michaellarabel: when i compile it without pts i get colored output too..
Kano: i thought that http://paste.debian.net/42872 would be enough but something is weird
Kano: http://paste.debian.net/42876
Kano: manually it works...
Kano: really stupid to debug when you need nearly 5 min to compile
Kano: michaellarabel: does that never happen for you?
michaellarabel: it has happened before, but I haven't had the time to figure it out, it's something within Minion
Kano: maybe remove it from universe-cli till you figured it out
Kano: universe-x - Universe Test Suite [Type: System]
Kano: universe - Universe Test Suite [Type: System]
Kano: you need to add the X to the descritpion of the first
Kano: test that do not install will not allow to run any suite...
delemex: hi
michaellarabel: Kano: I just checked my code and when in batch mode you should not be prompted to select a mirror
Kano: michaellarabel: well it was set to true, i was using the gui
michaellarabel: did you click on "Batch Mode" from the GUI?
michaellarabel: Actually, I suppose when using the GUI, that should also disable batch mode
michaellarabel: errr disable mirror selector
Kano: well i started the gui, opened the config settings and then this was set to true
Kano: by default
Kano: michaellarabel: you made b4, thats a good idea
johannes_: hi, I am about to buy a Intel GMA X4500HD based mainboard for my htpc, I heard Intels open source graphics support is said to be great and this IGP would help playing 1080p movies like vdpau does, this article http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=intel_x4500hd&num=1 is quite old, are there any news about this?
redeeman: it will not accelerate video playback like vdpau
Kano: hard to beat nearyl 12000 in 7zip it seems ;)
redeeman: Kano: i think i got 14k
Kano: johannes_: get a fast cpu then no problem
Kano: redeeman: show
redeeman: when i had cpu at 3.2ghz
redeeman: its SOMEWHERE on pts, but i cant easily find my posts there
redeeman: the interface sucks as i recall :P
Kano: redeeman: but i am at 3800 already
redeeman: this is a q9450
Kano: http://global.phoronix-test-suite.com/?k=profile&u=kanotix-31659-31936-14248
johannes_: Kano what kind of CPU would I need?
Kano: johannes_: 3ghz about
Kano: for 1080p software
Kano: well you could oc of course too
Kano: intel usually oc fine
johannes_: single or dual core?
Kano: johannes_: nothing below intel pentium e6300
Kano: in a good board i guess you can easyly oc it to 3.5 or so
Kano: redeeman: if you would call that cpu i use with Q then it would be a Q9750
Kano: just xeon as name
Kano: could somebody send me a huge cpu cooler ;)
redeeman: get water ;)
Kano: not that portable
Kano: do you have got water cooling?
Kano: i had it running @ 4 ghz,but after sometime prime95 failed. well for one test it should work...
redeeman: yes i have watercooling
Kano: and you only use 3.2 ghz? thats default for my cpu
redeeman: actulally its just set default now
redeeman: 2.6
Kano: can yo go over fsb 400 with your rams?
redeeman: didn't try
Kano: well i have got ddr2-1066, so no problem
Kano: pts b4 in kanotix now
redeeman: me too
Kano: 3200 is 8x400
Kano: for your cpu
redeeman: yeah
Kano: similar to 9.5 * 400 for 3800
Kano: michaellarabel: did you change something for m.?
michaellarabel: m.?
Kano: minion
Kano: git pull did not get any change for that
Kano: is repo refreshed?
michaellarabel: I haven't had time to look into minion problem
Kano: well partly it is a libboost problem also the install script is unclean, but even with that changes i had problems
michaellarabel: k
Kano: redeeman: do you use ddr2 or 3?
redeeman: ddr2
sandeen: michaellarabel, I was slightly wrong on the apache test. it does a small amount of IO to the server's access_log. But still not really testing the filesystem I'd expect.
