Phoronix IRC Log: 2009-06-21

rainbyte: hi
vadi2: has anyone gotten dx9 working on vb with a linux host? I thought that was supported w/ 3.0 beta, but it's not getting enabled here
xcdfgkjhgcv1: Has anyone managed to get OpenGL or DX9 working on Virtual Box with a Linux hosts yet?
michaellarabel: EXT3 vs. EXT4 vs. Btrfs vs. NILFS2 on HDD and SSD testing coming up next week on phoronix
xcdfgkjhgcv1: michaellarabel: On what SSD?
michaellarabel: Just a Super Talent SSD
xcdfgkjhgcv1: michaellarabel: That's not exactly relevant to the owners of Eee PC Netbooks. :(
michaellarabel: Well if ASUS would let me keep the Eee netbooks that are tested, I would be able to run some tests on the Eee, but with no longer having such hardware, there's nothing I can do about it.
xcdfgkjhgcv1: michaellarabel: It will be interesting to see how EXT4 and Btrfs compare to EXT3 on SSDs if you're going to make the comparison.
maligor: and not NILFS2?
xcdfgkjhgcv1: maligor: I don't know enough about that FS to be interested in it.
maligor: heh
xcdfgkjhgcv1: michaellarabel: I know what would make a really good Phoronix article! How about you compare how much of a chick magnet each Netbook is?
xcdfgkjhgcv1: I got my Eee PC 901 because it's a small and shiny laptop and seemed to be the best chick magnet.
maligor: qualcomm snapdragon smartbooks would be attract more chicks
xcdfgkjhgcv1: maligor: Yeah, I've been following them closely.
maligor: especially when combined with Windows CE! :P
xcdfgkjhgcv1: maligor: I bet Nvidia Tegra, if Nvidia ever allow Linux to run on it, would be an excellent platform for turning into a chick magnet.
xcdfgkjhgcv1: maligor: Windows CE is a POS
maligor: heh
xcdfgkjhgcv1: I can't ever imagine a cute girl at my school telling me "ohhhh lets share viruses together"
xcdfgkjhgcv1: NO! Girls like cute little penguins.
maligor: normal windows viruses wouldn't run on CE/ARM
xcdfgkjhgcv1: And protection from viruses.
xcdfgkjhgcv1: maligor: "Windows" is not a brand I want to be associated with.
xcdfgkjhgcv1: She wouldn't let me stick it in her otherwise she might catch a virus.
xcdfgkjhgcv1: maligor: Have you heard about Nvidia Tegra? It has a TDP of 1W and can play 1080p video without a problem and has a battery life of 25 days.
xcdfgkjhgcv1: maligor: ARM CPU system on a chip.
xcdfgkjhgcv1: I want to grab one and install Ubuntu on it.
maligor: 25 days maybe on standby
xcdfgkjhgcv1: maligor: 25 days playing audio.
maligor: that's nearly standby :P
maligor: it can probably shutdown the cpu for that
xcdfgkjhgcv1: maligor: Are you not impressed with 1080p video on a system as small as a USB drive with a TDP of 1W?!?!?
maligor: no, because I'm a amd fanboy
xcdfgkjhgcv1: With a six cell battery, it'd last for AGES.
xcdfgkjhgcv1: maligor: Fanboyism is gay.
xcdfgkjhgcv1: I use whatever best suits my needs at any given time.
xcdfgkjhgcv1: Be it Intel, ARM, AMD, ATI, or Nvidia.
maligor: AMD/ATI Should go into opensource lowpower gpu's too :P
xcdfgkjhgcv1: maligor: Intel already has that area covered.
maligor: no, they don't
xcdfgkjhgcv1: maligor: GMAs
xcdfgkjhgcv1: They're too slow for my liking though.
maligor: their lowpower solution is PowerVR SGX
xcdfgkjhgcv1: maligor: By GPUs you mean IGPs too?
xcdfgkjhgcv1: Or graphics cards?
maligor: the poulsboI mean the poulsbo chipset
maligor: it has a powervr
xcdfgkjhgcv1: maligor: Poulsbo isn't Intel.
xcdfgkjhgcv1: It's Tungsten Graphics.
xcdfgkjhgcv1: And has a shit driver.
maligor: tungsten graphics doesn't make or design hw
xcdfgkjhgcv1: I'd rather have the much faster and lower power Nvidia Tegra than Poulsbo.
maligor: they're a sw house
xcdfgkjhgcv1: maligor: Okay, maybe I got the wrong firm.
maligor: poulsbo is intel on powervr
xcdfgkjhgcv1: But it isn't Intel.
xcdfgkjhgcv1: But the opensource Intel driver doesn't work with it.
maligor: so?
xcdfgkjhgcv1: maligor: So it's unusable.
xcdfgkjhgcv1: maligor: The crappy poulsbo driver is useless.
maligor: nvidia tnt wasn't made by nvidia because nvidia driver doesn't work on it anymore?
maligor: unless someone knows better, poulsbo is a intel chipset with a powervr graphics
xcdfgkjhgcv1: maligor: But the Intel driver doesn't work. So it's crap.
xcdfgkjhgcv1: The Poulsbo driver is crap.
maligor: the intel drivers are pretty crappy too
xcdfgkjhgcv1: maligor: They seem fine to me.
xcdfgkjhgcv1: They work with 2D and 3D.
xcdfgkjhgcv1: And video playback seems fine.
xcdfgkjhgcv1: Wine works too.
maligor: and they aren't lowpower
xcdfgkjhgcv1: maligor: That's the fault of the hardware AFAIK.
maligor: not in the SoC sense anyway
xcdfgkjhgcv1: SoC?
maligor: System-on-Chip
maligor: the typical ARM
xcdfgkjhgcv1: Yeah of course.
maligor: with most things integrated on the core
xcdfgkjhgcv1: It's a 3 chip design.
xcdfgkjhgcv1: It's not very efficient. :(
maligor: that doesn't matter much
maligor: you can't intermesh designs that much anyway
xcdfgkjhgcv1: I need to go to bed now because I don't want to look like a piece of shit when I ask out that cute girl I like at school tomorrow.
maligor: I'm sure you could separate relatively easily all the components in a ARM SoC into different chips and the power use wouldn't jump by all that much
xcdfgkjhgcv1: maligor: I'm sure you couldn't put the Atom 945GSE chipset into a SoC board.
xcdfgkjhgcv1: She's sooooooo fit.
xcdfgkjhgcv1: Anywho, off to bed I go.
xcdfgkjhgcv1: Nighty night Linuxers.
