Phoronix IRC Log: 2009-06-17

Ivanovic: okay, initial kms for radeon <=r5xx will be in 2.6.31 (staging!)
Ivanovic: http://airlied.livejournal.com/66958.html
kuzetsa: eek help
kuzetsa: I just leaked a password
kuzetsa: ah well... let's hope nobody thinks to screw with me :(
schestowitz: Michael's review gets some press coverage: http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/1271810/linux-ion-nettop-reviewed
sarah{grr}: slaps at kuzetsa like a mindless clone attempting a cat-fight lol
sarah{grr}: logged in my other computer terminal
sarah{grr}: so who do I need to talk to about making a livecd that includes phoronix test suite? is this allowed?
sarah{grr}: I couldn
sarah{grr}: didn't rather, notice what license it's under
michaellarabel: sarah{grr} there is one already in development that will be released soon after we find hosting mirror(s)
sarah{grr}: oh, GPLv3
michaellarabel: yep
michaellarabel: http://www.pts-linux-live.com/
sarah{grr}: michaellarabel: what's wrong with using the http://www.phorogit.com/repo/ servers?
michaellarabel: Not enough bandwidth :(
sarah{grr}: oh, ok
sarah{grr}: I was talking with someone else about that last night.
michaellarabel: About bandwidth or PTS?
sarah{grr}: about PTS
michaellarabel: Ah nice.
sarah{grr}: like, I wanted to make my own livecd, but I'm starting to realize there's an awful lot of tests that require an xserver, and I have limited vision so it's tricky
sarah{grr}: brb, going to other terminal (harder to read on this one)
kuzetsa: {grr} is when I'm planning to ghost myself normally
kuzetsa: like I was saying, I don't think I can roll my own distro effectively since most people want to use it as a workstation with graphics
kuzetsa: I have an under-utilized video card from 2 years ago (geforce 8 series) so ... yeah
michaellarabel: right now PTS Linux Live is derived from Ubuntu/Debian to some extent.
kuzetsa: oh, but I thought it could run on top of other distros
kuzetsa: example: gentoo portage ebuild -- http://www.gentoo-portage.com/app-benchmarks/phoronix-test-suite
kuzetsa: and I noticed: only required dependencies for the Phoronix Test Suite on Linux systems is PHP 5.x CLI too
michaellarabel: right
michaellarabel: it can
michaellarabel: PTS Linux Live is the distribution working on that allows Live testing of PTS
michaellarabel: PTS itself will run on any Linux distro, OpenSolaris, BSD, or Mac OS X.
kuzetsa: oh, you meant the livecd in development. ok
michaellarabel: Yes
michaellarabel: what have been your motives for wanting a PTS distro?
kuzetsa: cool, cool. OK I'd love to test it without having to put it directly on hardware / hard disc because I don't have many spare machines.
michaellarabel: Ah. is this for a business interest or just personal interest in PTS/
kuzetsa: probably not business
kuzetsa: I'm disabled, been looking into finding a good open-source alternative to microsoft (dos, win32, internet explorer) ever since I was back on BBSes and got my first linux, slackware...
kuzetsa: I've mostly been using microsoft because they had such overwhelming market share and the business interests kept me there
kuzetsa: now, I did notice there's a business end of sorts attached to phoronix
kuzetsa: I was playing with slackware on the umsdos filesystem in like 94 I think hehe
kuzetsa: michaellarabel: if you know about the PTS live disc, really, I just have two questions:
kuzetsa: what window manager, and will compiz be running or not?
michaellarabel: metacity is being used right now. It's still being determined whether or not Compiz will be used.
kuzetsa: nods
kuzetsa: oh, it's gnome default now? neat
kuzetsa: ah, allows xinerama cool
Milyardo: Yawn.. Good Morning #phoronix
michaellarabel: kuzetsa: A very stripped down GNOME desktop, yes.
kuzetsa: nods
kuzetsa: thanks
kuzetsa: stripped down like... just installed the dependancies to get it to boot up gnome / xorg I'd imagine, yeah?
kuzetsa: like... if you do a gentoo stage3 install and then type "emerge gnome" or something lol
michaellarabel: almost to that extent
kuzetsa: wondering why phoronix has so many news articles / journalism / reviews
evocallaghan: michaellarabel:Do you want us to do a LiveCD for you with the test suit?
michaellarabel: kuzetsa: Because I write a lot lol
michaellarabel: evo: if you want
evocallaghan: No, I could not careless but you said you wanted a OpenSolaris based one so I was going to do it for you.
evocallaghan: ;)
kuzetsa: oh, so if there's an opensolaris one... wow, sweet
kuzetsa: I might have to try that under qemu right this second lol
evocallaghan: No, there is not
evocallaghan: I was going to do a special version for Michael based off AuroraUX
evocallaghan: But if he is not that concerned then we have very limited dev resources so I rather do more important things like fix the crap in Xorg for example upstream. We are porting that to clang this week
kuzetsa: ok, now I'm confused -- I didn't see where there was a dev stuff... phorogit? can anyone volunteer?
kuzetsa: is there a bugzilla?
michaellarabel: kuzetsa: No BugZilla at this time. phoronix.com/forums/ works/
kuzetsa: oh ok thanks
kuzetsa: phoronix.com/forums/works 404
michaellarabel: no, phoronix.com/forums/ works
michaellarabel: works isn't part of the URL
michaellarabel: Accidentally hit / after works
kuzetsa: oh lol
kuzetsa: so just look under what, general linux?
kuzetsa: I'm more interested in mobile / embedded at the moment
michaellarabel: no, under Phoronix Test Suite
michaellarabel: http://www.phoronix.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=49 PTS bugs go there
kuzetsa: oh right... k
kuzetsa: vBulletin is closed source?
michaellarabel: yes
kuzetsa: hrm... k
evocallaghan: has to go work on a AIX box
evocallaghan: Laters all
