Phoronix IRC Log: 2009-06-11

slaine_: ran some benchmarks against Safari 3.2 and Safari 4.0 on my iMac G5 last night
slaine_: impressive result. don't have the exact details, but from a rather sleep deprived memory, the over all score in the order of 3.4x faster
lord-carlos: Hi, i am new in the forum so i got under 5 posts. How long does it usual take untill a mod un locks a post?
Ivanovic: no unlocking needed unless you add links in your posts
Ivanovic: beside this posts are unlocked when they are unlocked
Ivanovic: ;)
lord-carlos: oh, yes. I added a link to pastebin.com
lord-carlos: I got a fresh install of debian testing, with the debian sid kernel (2.6.29) and i try to install fglrx for my HD4850, with the install-fglrx-debian.sh script. But it fails: http://pastebin.com/f72341d34
lord-carlos: "Error! Build of fglrx.ko failed for: 2.6.29-2-amd64 (x86_64)"
lord-carlos: Can some one help me with this?
lord-carlos: Ivanovic: after 18 hours still no post unlock. Do you think i should try to contact a mod? Because i am despaired with those fglrx drivers :S
Ivanovic: lord-carlos: relax and wait till michaellarabel unlocks your post
lord-carlos: i will do that :)
michaellarabel: lord-carlos: I thought I cleared all modd'ed posts last night and this morning
lord-carlos: weird :/
michaellarabel: Yeah, just checked and I see no more posts awaiting moderation.
lord-carlos: Maybe i did something wrong. I was really tired the time i wrote the post
lord-carlos: i just do it again
lord-carlos: thanks
evocallaghan: michaellarabel:Hi
michaellarabel: Hi evocallaghan
evocallaghan: News blast for you
evocallaghan: llvm/clang port to Solaris is basically complete, two bugs left. Looks like I am the new maintainer for the port :/
evocallaghan: Oh yea, and x86 asm sucks ! http://pastebin.com/m46a0eed3
evocallaghan: oh and lets not forget http://pastebin.com/m335d0e5c from this morning
evocallaghan: :( !
guhcampos: Does anybody own an Asus P5QE and can tell-me if I can fit a GTX 260 on it?
evocallaghan: michaellarabel: What's been happening at your end of town?
lord-carlos: just me or is the side down?
lord-carlos: ah, it works now
Kano: hi lord-carlos ,was that you with debian sid
lord-carlos: yes
lord-carlos: Thanks you very much
lord-carlos: the installation works fine now
lord-carlos: but kdm wont start:
lord-carlos: xorg.0.log | grep EE :
lord-carlos: (EE) fglrx(0): Given depth (8) is not supported by the fglrx driver
lord-carlos: PreInitVisual failed
lord-carlos: PreInit failed
Kano: lord-carlos: to use my script
Kano: rm -f /etc/X11/xorg.conf*
Kano: dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
Kano: then run it again
lord-carlos: i will try that
Kano: the script only works with pure xorg.conf files
Kano: if you manually changed it, it is not possible to support those
lord-carlos: i think i added "driver vesa" to the xorg.conf .. i try it with a fresh one
redeeman: anyone that tried dm-crypt threading in .30 yet?
lord-carlos: hugs Kano
lord-carlos: thanks man, it works
Kano: you will get errors in dmesg whenever you run a 3d app. can not do anything against that
lord-carlos: yay, 350fps in extreme tux racer :D
raevol: lord-carlos: what card?
lord-carlos: HD4850
maligor: I doubt anyone wants to use 256color mode these days anymore
maligor: or even 16bit :P
raevol: lord-carlos: does that mean r700 3d is working?
maligor: r700 has had 3d working since the card was released on fglrx
lord-carlos: with fglrx drivers
raevol: oh sorry wrong channel
raevol: haha
raevol: thought this was #radeon
maligor: I heard they've gotten glxgears showing stuff on the opensource r600's tho
maligor: intermittently tho
maligor: (and that it was currently broken)
timboy_: anyone know why there aren't any amd motherboards with 6 ddr3 slots? is it due to them still having an FSB?
Kano: 6 ddr3 slots are possible for i7
Kano: dual triple channel
Kano: just not every x58 board uses 6 slots
Kano: but amd does not support triple channel, so you search at the wrong end ;)
timboy_: Kano, so should I buy i7 with 6 slots or equivalent amd phenom II x4?
Kano: i7 is much faster
timboy_: ok. bummer I really wanted to support amd...
timboy_: Kano, I need at least 8 sata ports. do you think I need to get a motherboard with them all on board or can I get a pci-e sata card? am I going to see a performance hit by going pci-e?
mattmatteh: timboy_, why would you see a performace hit /
mattmatteh: ?
mattmatteh: timboy_, might see more performave
mattmatteh: c
timboy_: mattmatteh, not sure. that's what I thought.
timboy_: thx all!
mattmatteh: in the past when i have added pci cards for ide, i have always gotten faster speeds
mattmatteh: usually because the hard drive controller is newer and better
Kano: thats does not apply to sata when hds have got transferrates over 110 mb/s
mattmatteh: Kano, yeah, thats why i said with ide
mattmatteh: but.. i kinda assume that would be the same for pcie
mattmatteh: since the bus is faster
Kano: it would work with pci-e too,but usually you have got enough sata ports
Azerthoth: Kano a question if I may, have you ever run across a script that would detect and mount LVM partitions. I ask because I am looking to have that kind of functionality for rescuing systems in an upcoming release
Kano: Azerthoth: the lvm initscript does that
Kano: did you try booting kanotix?
Kano: at least you should have got the /dev/mapper/ entries
Kano: you can mount it
Azerthoth: sadly not in awhile, looking to try and set up an easy rescue from chroot for inclusion in Sabayon 5
Azerthoth: while I can do it manually, I'm want to try and make it easier for our less experianced users
Kano: should be all in /etc/init.d/lvm2 usually
Azerthoth: I'll take a looksie ... thanks
michaellarabel: Argh, still need PTS Linux Live mirrors...
Azerthoth: screams like a little girl and hides from schestowitz
