Phoronix IRC Log: 2009-04-29

Kano: so, just got some new rams...
Kano: pushed my Q9300 up to 3247 mhz
Kano: used nexuz 2.4.2 to compare against older results
Kano: http://global.phoronix-test-suite.com/?k=profile&u=kano-32599-15280-18069
Kano: i think 141 is a gfx card limit
Kano: fsb 433 instead of 333 is not that bad
careta: hello
careta: i have a problem with phoronix test suite: when I try to run the iozone test, it fills up my available space (7.5gb) and corrupts the whole test. how much free space I need?
wirechief: careta maybe michaellarabel can answer that question are you here mike ?
michaellarabel: wirechief: what?
wirechief: user careta had a question: i have a problem with phoronix test suite: when I try to run the iozone test, it fills up my available space (7.5gb) and corrupts the whole test. how much free space I need?
michaellarabel: what size run are you using with IOzone, it's an option that goes up to 8GB
careta: im doing a batch run
wirechief: michaellarabel: after seeing Kano's latest test i am going to download the latest tonight for testing on a jaunty 9.04 i have intel grahics and am looking to see if i get freezes
michaellarabel: careta: If doing a batch run on iozone, it will go up to the 8GB then
careta: thanks you michaellarabel and you wirechief
wirechief: careta np
wirechief: michaellarabel: the compiz has blacklisted my intel graphics card is that going to be an issue with pts ?
michaellarabel: wirechief: Why would it be an issue with PTS?
wirechief: i guess only if i crash.
wirechief: for 3rd testing
wirechief: i dont know, i guess that remains to be seen, (dumb question) i will find out later when i test.
michaellarabel: Btrfs benchmarks coming out on Phoronix tomorrow.
michaellarabel: and the tentative title is "Btrfs Is Not Yet The Performance King"
wirechief: is this Btrfs going to make it into a Ubuntu some time ? or is it still very imature
michaellarabel: It's possible we could see it as an install-time option for 9.10.
michaellarabel: Not default, of course.
wirechief: well it should make a most interesting read, i have phoronix now in my google reader, for some reason it is not updaing in my firefox
wirechief: updating
wirechief: i was under the impression that ext4 would become available in the next release of Ubuntu, the 9.10 and that they resolved the issue with file loss
wirechief: seem to be a lot of people at least trying it even though it had been reported to of had issues.
wirechief: for me though, this freeze issue with the intel graphics has been more of a concern, i have been using bug fixes from here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1130582
wirechief: so far they have worked well, no freezes...
Kano: michaellarabel: that super pi runs only on 1 core, isnt that a bit stupid
michaellarabel: super-pi isn't a test profile that I use like ever. I don't think I even wrote that profile.
Kano: btw. smoking guns branch 1.1 compiles now on 64 bit
michaellarabel: good. when do they plan to have a 1.1 release?
Kano: i dont know when there will be an official update, but this time it is multiarch
michaellarabel: k
Kano: they dont know yet
Kano: but i have got lenny binarys if you want to play it *g*
Kano: or just compile svn 1.1 branch
Kano: svn co https://smokinguns.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/smokinguns/branches/1.1 smokinguns-1.1
Deanjo: I sent micheal a opensource pi benchmark a while back
Kano: it runs ages
Deanjo: One that really exercises gmp :D
michaellarabel: Deanjo: What one was that?
Deanjo: Oh heck that was about 6 months ago, it was a modified one that I did of gmp-pi
Deanjo: Does single or multi
michaellarabel: hmm
Deanjo: sent 08/28/2008
Deanjo: I just resent it to ya
Deanjo: It also applies the intel and amd performance patches for GMP
Deanjo: It does not screw with the OS's GMP
michaellarabel: hmmm I am not sure why I haven't made a profile for gmpbench before
Deanjo: Me either :D
michaellarabel: trying now to see if I can easily make a profile of it
michaellarabel: of gmpbench
Deanjo: well gmpbench as it says is not a great benchmark, That's why I put forward gmp-pi where it actually is optimized for the procs
michaellarabel: Deanjo: GMP builds on OS X, right?
Deanjo: Ya, last time I tried
redeeman: do notice the gmp peoples kind words about xcode :)
redeeman: a great testament to the superior quality of crapple code
Deanjo: Ya well they say that about optimization patches too
Deanjo: ;
redeeman: did you read the thing?
Deanjo: The GMP crew are anal to say the least
michaellarabel: Deanjo: gmpbench test profile pushed to master
redeeman: Deanjo: you cant say what they write on that page isn't true
Deanjo: Like I said redeeman last time I compiled it on OS X it went fine
redeeman: have you heard from nvidia?
Deanjo: Not on your issue
redeeman: seems very unlikely they will ever do anything about it
Deanjo: BTW the xcode they are referring to is pretty old as well
redeeman: yes well... such bugs should NEVER have been allowed out
