Phoronix IRC Log: 2009-04-13

maccam-sager: michaellarabel: for a future milestone, you should think about making a cross platform version of PTS. Not all tests would be portable, obviously, but you should make a profile for tests that also work in Windows, so people can get an idea of how well their hardware is working in each OS
michaellarabel: maccam-sager: PTS is already cross-platform with Linux, Mac OS X, OpenSolaris, and the *BSDs. However, I have no intentions of making it Windows compatible without the backing of at least one vendor that would be using the Windows version.
maccam-sager: michaellarabel: ah, that's too bad. Often a lot of consumer hardware (graphics cards, *cough*) works best with Windows. benchmarking between Linux and Windows would be a useful gauge for users to see how well the hardware is being utilized, and for developers to see what needs to be optimized
Kano: hi michaellarabel
bkero: r/win 35
Milyardo: michaellarabel: lastest change on git hasn't updated yet :|
KingOfTheBongo: the phoronix linux liver its going to be based on >?
KingOfTheBongo: the phoronix linux live*
michaellarabel: Milyardo: Updated.
michaellarabel: KongOfTheBongo: Either Ubuntu or Fedora, likely
KingOfTheBongo: Fedora pls
michaellarabel: Why is that KingOfTheBongo?
Lightkey: because he is banging on his bongos
KingOfTheBongo: well i dont use ubunto , fedora either
KingOfTheBongo: i use gentoo
KingOfTheBongo: but fedora 11 is builded with gcc 4.4 and my system too
KingOfTheBongo: gcc 4.4 gives me a boost of speed with -fgraphite cflag
michaellarabel: KingOfTheBongo: But is that your only reason?
Kano: hi michaellarabel, could you please add the time depend + tag it as 1.8.1, i would like to package it
vadi2: which pts benchmark is best for measuring HDD speed?
michaellarabel: vadi2: iozone
vadi2: okay, thanks. guessed with that initially too.
Kano: that do you think about a fixed 1.8.1 version?
Kano: i dont want to package git if not needed
Kano: also could you retest nexuiz with 1.8.0 + i7?
Kano: as that test is incompatible
michaellarabel: Kano: 1.8.1 is tagged in Git but won't be out until Thursday
Kano: hmm did you fix that time thing
Kano: for byte test
michaellarabel: I think the better way is to just patch byte to not use such stupid detection
Kano: well byte itself uses time
vadi2: this result is a bit funny: http://paste.pocoo.org/show/112439/
vadi2: or is it supposed to be like that?
michaellarabel: funky
vadi2: I'll try it again and upload this time
Kano: i could cheat and preinstall time, but i dont like to
vadi2: more even now, 65, 76, 76
vadi2: http://global.phoronix-test-suite.com/index.php?k=profile&u=vadi-32332-8139-608
michaellarabel: vadi2: What's your motherboard?
vadi2: um, no idea
vadi2: it's a system76 serval 3
vadi2: which is a...
vadi2: FL90 model
vadi2: "IntelĀ® PM965 + ICH8-M Chipset Mainboard"?
vadi2: sorry, thats the chipset
vadi2: michaellarabel: got this when running pts on a server:
vadi2: This process may take several minutes.
vadi2: sudo: apt-get -y install build-essential: command not found
vadi2: however when I ran the command manually, it went through
Deanjo: It's the skill testing question portion of the test vadi2 :P
vadi2: lol
vadi2: good one
Deanjo: thinks this is gonna be a long week waiting for his Phenom II
Milyardo: You bought one? D:
Milyardo: What about waiting for the AM3 BEs?
Deanjo: I am waiting for the 955
Deanjo: My local guy is supposed to have them in stock Fri
vadi2: Ugh, what is this. 30mb/s on a host, 3mb/s in a guest vb. time for googling :(
Deanjo: http://www.lockergnome.com/it/2009/04/13/what-not-to-do-in-meetings/ <--- here I thought it was going to say stuff like "Don't lift an ass cheek and let one ripp"
Deanjo: Yawn.... Boring
Milyardo: "Don't let Deanjo come to the meeting, especially if its an IRC one"
Deanjo: w00t!!! Tornado warnings here!!! Like I haven't had enough excitement and near death experiences this year.....
Milyardo: :)
Milyardo: D:
Milyardo: I wonder why I have better performance in QW:ET than UT2k4 :|
Milyardo: *ET:QW
Milyardo: http://global.phoronix-test-suite.com/index.php?k=profile&u=milyardo-11217-28408-26718
Kano: 4800 series?
Kano: it does not show the name?
Milyardo: I guess not :|
Kano: which one is it
Kano: looks so slow
Milyardo: You search 4800 on Global it seems like alot of cards come up like that
Milyardo: Kano: its actualy a 4830
Kano: ah ok
Milyardo: Micheal's benchmark of the 4830 was higher though :|
Kano: i thinkg because of the used cpu
Kano: oc your cpu
Kano: 2.3 ghz is low for games
Milyardo: That may be it :|
