Phoronix IRC Log: 2009-04-08

nicark|: Hi. Is it possible to rotate a screen to the right with the radeonhd drivers and with a radeon hd 4870??
IDv3: when i run "phoronix-test-suite benchmark x-testing" i get "This test (qgears2) is already running". whats the problem?
IDv3: oh, stupid of me. you cant run those tests remotely
redeeman: you should be able to
redeeman: just export DISPLAY first
Kano: hi michaellarabel , how to combine 2 combined views or first extract one and combine it then?
michaellarabel: phoronix-test-suite merge
Kano: http://global.phoronix-test-suite.com/?k=profile&u=chm64-16534-25168-22656
Kano: http://global.phoronix-test-suite.com/index.php?k=profile&u=kano-628-6932-9485
Kano: the first is basially a i7 3200 mhz with xeon name
michaellarabel: what happens if you try to combine it right now? does it replicate the existing tests?
Kano: but even his result of parallel bzip2 is faster with kanotix / debian 5.0 as base system *g*
Kano: is u slowing it down ;)
Kano: michaellarabel: since when is the monitor reported?
michaellarabel: Version 1.8 has monitor detection code
Kano: but only for fglrx?
michaellarabel: and open-source drivers
Kano: so no nvidia-settings call
michaellarabel: NVIDIA's blob reports the monitor string in a not nice way from the logs that I have looked at.
michaellarabel: is there a nvidia-settings call to expose it? I hadn't found it in nvidia-settings --query all
Kano: well the gui shows it
michaellarabel: right
michaellarabel: but look in your nvidia-settings --query all, if you see it there, great, but I don't think it is there
michaellarabel: Kano: Just fixed your merge bug, but right now in PTS 1.8 it's not dropping out the identical results
Kano: maybe you could fix the tests which did not build in a 1.8.1 release and retest the i7
Kano: nexuiz was newer and 2 did not run
Kano: hmm 3 did not run: php, mysql, byte/drystone
Kano: for the byte test a flag is wrong or so
michaellarabel: Kano: http://global.phoronix-test-suite.com/index.php?k=profile&u=michael-5882-12915-10629 merge is now working properly for eliminating identical results
Kano: update git then
Kano: i still get the error
michaellarabel: yep, pushing still
michaellarabel: should be up now
Kano: now git does something
Kano: is it possible to rename one colum like chm to Xeon W3520 @ 3.2
michaellarabel: right now there isn't rename support since I don't know of a nice way to facilitate that from the CLI
Kano: michaellarabel: did you ever have got a msi wind? that netbook has got even oc mode in the bios
michaellarabel: Kano: Nope, no MSI Wind ever.
Milyardo: AA site suddenly when down today
Milyardo: not just the website
Milyardo: everything D:
Milyardo: IRC/ Auth servers, download servers
Milyardo: mail server is still up
Milyardo: could today be the day for AA3?
mattmatteh: just saw the news about intels atom cpu, should that mention power efficiency, i dont recall seeing it
Milyardo: http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16348
maligor: new catalyst?
maligor: hmm.. I wonder what that was
maligor: atleast vindows versions seem to be out
maligor: oh, heh, Linux is available april 17th
Erektium: what does fglrx mean? what does the letters stand for?
IDv3: "FireGL and Radeon for X"
mattmatteh: didnt know that
maligor: Does the X mark the treasure?
Ivanovic: yes
IDv3: haha
Erektium: thanks
reisi: Argh, just spend the last 6h trying to get my new system with ATI HD 4650 and two screens to work in Ubuntu Jaunty beta.. No luck, just hard lock ups.
reisi: I really thought this all, banging the head against the wall with graphic cards in Linux was history already :(
Ivanovic: reisi: which driver is used, radeonhd or radeon?
reisi: Ivanovic: i've actually tried all three (incl. fglrx).. first two you mentioned even log that a screen resolution 2560x1024 is avail, but in X xrandr allows only 1280x1280
reisi: Ivanovic: fglrx when configured with aticonfig --initial=dual-head just hangs the system on X startup
Ivanovic: hmm, interesting
Ivanovic: a friend is using some strange agp version of such a card with two 1600x1200 screen
Ivanovic: s
Ivanovic: works nicely for him with a gentoo bug (he is using one of the open drivers, not sure which=
reisi: it'd seem that ubuntu jaunty beta is lagging one minor behind of the radeon driver
Ivanovic: that is using some virtual screen set to 3200x1200
Ivanovic: i wouldn't be suprised if my friend uses a git version
Ivanovic: (since this is dead easy in gentoo)
Ivanovic: which version of fglrx are you using, reisi?
reisi: i'll try to find a way to do the same in Ubuntu, but i know it's going to be painful :)
Ivanovic: maybe you just want to add a virtual line with the correct res spanned over both screens instead of relying on aticonfig
Ivanovic: (i don't rely on this prog, i prefer to hand edit xorg.conf)
reisi: Ivanovic: well the xorg.conf it adjusted looked plain ugly
reisi: just a sec for that version number
Ivanovic: oh, really?
Ivanovic: mine looks rather reasonable and eady to read (okay, got some experience with handling /etc by hand since i seriously started working with linux with lfs
reisi: i too got background with lfs :)
Ivanovic: short question: why do you want to use ubuntu?
Ivanovic: would maybe arch not be a better solution for you?
Ivanovic: this is IMO a lot better due to rolling releases
reisi: i bought this rig to be able to code; i'm not really interested in continious maintaining
Ivanovic: and unless you are afraid of a working on config files with a texteditor this is probably a great choice for you if you want a well working linux distro
Ivanovic: ehm, especially for coding i prefer distros without the split into -dev packages
Ivanovic: as in: arch as binary distro, gentoo as source based distro
reisi: not afraid, i just really would like to focus on doing something that brings money in :)
Ivanovic: :)
Ivanovic: i think arch could be the right thing for you
Ivanovic: yes, setting up takes some mins, but once this is done it works nicely
reisi: actually the only thing i need in an os is the latest kde 4 desktop and the latest java runtimes either from openjdk or sun :)
Ivanovic: (okay, the same for gentoo, tough there updates and installing pakages needs a little longer)
Ivanovic: uhm, you said "latest": gentoo unstable!
reisi: :D
Ivanovic: or: debian experimental
reisi: i really like the debian package management
Ivanovic: personally as a coder doing something with the system i *love* gentoo
reisi: not so interested in compiling everything by hand.. i learned a lot of the whole gnu/linux os when fiddling around with lfs, but i do not want to go bad
Ivanovic: since you can even manage "packages" right out of some svn/git/cvs/whatever with the package manager
reisi: bad/back
reisi: hmm that sure sounds interesting
Ivanovic: this is *lovely* for a coder relying on "recent packages"
Ivanovic: (eg i am using PTS right from git and manage it via my package manager)
IDv3: michaellarabel: have you some tests going on between Ubuntu, {Free,Open}BSD and OS X by chance on compareable hardware?
Ivanovic: reisi: gentoo is basically an lfs with a package manager
redeeman: not really
reisi: Ivanovic: perhaps you and I mean different things with the "latest" :) for me 1-2 months is ok
redeeman: gentoo does alot more than lfs
Ivanovic: redeeman: yeah, right, but it feels rather close
IDv3: lfs is a book not a distribution
reisi: Ivanovic: fglrx in ubuntu is 2:8.600-0ubuntu2
Ivanovic: you can configure stuff rather well
Ivanovic: uhm, this sounds strange
Ivanovic: 8-6 would be "june 2008"
IDv3: its a hands on guide on how to build a system from scratch. it does not aim to compete with a linux distribution
Ivanovic: more likely it is 9-4 regarding the news i heard
Ivanovic: IDv3: right, it is a good help to learn the linux internals
IDv3: indeed
reisi: Ivanovic: hmm 9.3 is actually the latest linxu driver release from ati
Ivanovic: though it relies solely on what the single packages offer
Ivanovic: the latest *official*
Ivanovic: the ubuntu alpha stuff rtelies on 9.4
IDv3: Ivanovic: thats the downside. it requires a lot of research that is not hinted in the book
Ivanovic: IDv3: it was a great learning experience (yeah, i am lucky, i have a friend who knows it well who helped me getting started)
IDv3: Ivanovic: when you can ask real people when you are stuck somewhere, then its really great to learn
Ivanovic: reisi: try gentoo, beside waiting a long time you might really like it
IDv3: and when you have no hurry to get a working system
Ivanovic: that is: it is *perfect* for coders since it is damn easy to get latest versions
Ivanovic: compiling always works
Ivanovic: and stuff like this
Ivanovic: like i said, a friend of mine really knows his stuff and he helped me when i installed it the first time
Ivanovic: did it several times afterwards, too (sometimes using alfs to speed getting to blfs up)
Ivanovic: at the end you know a lot about the system internals and are easily able to fix smaller stuff yourself and *understand* what you are doing
IDv3: you can gain that knowledge from using debian aswell :)
Ivanovic: IDv3: but not as easily since with lfs the stuff is described for every package
IDv3: Ivanovic: the book covers the "what" but not "why". otherwise it would be a perfect source for learning
IDv3: e.g. why do you need 3 turns of building your toolchain
IDv3: a bit more background information would be really interesting
Ivanovic: okay, i had this info due to my friend
IDv3: can we invite him to add to the book? :)
Ivanovic: i think he is busy with other stff
IDv3: too bad :(
Ivanovic: that is: he was the one getting me started on wesnoth (he is the german translation maintainer and asked me many years ago if i was willing to help him, now i am "a little more" than vice maintainer of the german translation)
maligor: jaunty has the beta 9.4 too
Ivanovic: maligor: uhm, we are talking about the ubuntun 9.4 alpha/beta/whatever
Ivanovic: so yeah, this one has the fglrx 9.4 beta
Ivanovic: IIRC 9.4 is jaunty, right?
IDv3: Ivanovic: you speak german? :)
Ivanovic: uhm, i am native german
IDv3: me too :)
Ivanovic: so yeah, i do spear "some" german
Ivanovic: s/spear/speak
IDv3: but: wir schwaben können alles außer hochdeutsch :P
Ivanovic: if my typing skills are especially bad today, this is the reason: http://www.biertest-online.de/cgi-bin/show/ebs.pl?Data=altenmuenster_maibock
Ivanovic: ah, where in southern germany are you from?
IDv3: oh, haha. cheers then :D
IDv3: stuttgart
Ivanovic: i was born in ludwigsburg, though i now live in the "pott" (where my partens are from)
IDv3: awww, they have an amazing castle at ludwigsburg
Ivanovic: my partens were maried in the chappel in this castle
IDv3: now thats awesome
Ivanovic: jupp (though i was not born at that time ;) )
IDv3: hehe :D
Ivanovic: but since i lived for ~7 years in asperg i of course was often in the "blühendes barock"
Ivanovic: really nice
Ivanovic: though i just head in #gp2x.de on efnet that the great butcher with his great "maultauschen" that was (some years ago) in the marsthallcenter has closed
Ivanovic: is really sad because of this, because those maultaschen were the best i ever had
maligor: in jaunty you'd have to use the drivers supplied in the repos
Ivanovic: maligor: and this is what i *love* about gentoo, it is so easy to "extend" the available stuff
Ivanovic: ;)
maligor: Ivanovic, personally I think gentoo is a waste of time, heh
Ivanovic: maligor: it works nicely for me especially since i can easily get packages right out of svn into the package manager
Ivanovic: i think this is rather unique for gentoo
IDv3: Ivanovic: what system did you use so far for the PTS?
Ivanovic: my normal desktop system
Ivanovic: Sysinfo for 'rechner1': Linux 2.6.25.20 running KDE 3.5.10, CPU: Intel(R) Core 2 Quad CPU Q9300 @ 2.50GHz at 2000 MHz (4999 bogomips), HD: 361/1162GB, RAM: 2522/3952MB, 153 proc's, 13.40h up
IDv3: Core 2 Quad?
Ivanovic: jupp
IDv3: does that mean 2 CPUs with 2 cores each?
Ivanovic: it means a cpu with 4 cores
Ivanovic: based on the "Core2" series
IDv3: wow
Ivanovic: (thought he C2Q is basically just two core2duo die on a single "board"
IDv3: could you upload the results for the linux-system suite somewhere?
Ivanovic: the last time i really ran it is a while ago
IDv3: awww
IDv3: Ivanovic: you just dont wanna reveal that you have an old Pentium II
IDv3: grins
Ivanovic: IDv3: correct
Ivanovic: ;)
IDv3: i would be curious to see how much faster the current computers are compared to my old Athlon64
Ivanovic: do those "compiling wesnoth" results maybe make you believe me regarding having a C2Q? http://pastebin.com/mb92ce55
Ivanovic: it depends on the task
IDv3: will look around global.PTS for interesting samples
Ivanovic: eg for compiling wesnoth an athlon 64 X2 is *damn* fast and close to my c2q
Ivanovic: (probably because wesnoth uses *lots* of ram and the integrated ram controller really helps)
IDv3: true that, here i only have 2GB
Hukka: Not much, 2GB
Hukka: I have a lowly LE-edition Athlon, but still 4GB
Hukka: Then again, this laptop has C2D and 2GB, but it's not my fault that it won't take more ram
mattmatteh: anyone familiar with cpu freq on amd64 x2 ? trying to get it to slow down and conserve energy but i am getting an error. i can see 6 different speeds listed as available in /sys/.....
mattmatteh: would that be a bios option ? perhaps its disabled, but if it were, then i would expect that its not listed ?
mattmatteh: i have a 4850e
evocallaghan: mattmatteh: Hi
evocallaghan: uname -sv ?
evocallaghan: mattmatteh: Its called, Cool n Quite
mattmatteh: evocallaghan, ahh
mattmatteh: ok
mattmatteh: i think that might be disabled
mattmatteh: but...
mattmatteh: i thought that was something that the bios did
mattmatteh: i was looking at cpufreqd
mattmatteh: there a difference ? or do those work together ?
mattmatteh: or interfere
mattmatteh: Linux #1 SMP Wed Apr 8 13:50:51 CDT 2009
evocallaghan: mattmatteh:I don't know, Solaris works *perfect*
mattmatteh: i read on a forum thread that it worked in ubuntu too
evocallaghan: Have you got the latest BIOS installed?
mattmatteh: no idea
mattmatteh: i never updated it
mattmatteh: dont even know how to do that
evocallaghan: Update it !
evocallaghan: Goto your MB vendors site and check your model
mattmatteh: well, i think i might have cool and quiet disabled
evocallaghan: I would start with making sure you have the latest BIOS
mattmatteh: umm
evocallaghan: even before tweaking settings
mattmatteh: lets see if there is an update
mattmatteh: asus m3n78-em
evocallaghan: BIOS's are more important then people given them credit for.
evocallaghan: ok goto the Asus site
mattmatteh: this might be too much work. navigating that website is not easy
mattmatteh: yeah... that web site is not working
evocallaghan: Sorry can't help you.
mattmatteh: evocallaghan, well, i would like to know what cool and quiet does
mattmatteh: and if that is the problem
mattmatteh: i would rather not mess with the bios ( unless it is installing coreboot)
evocallaghan: Pfff
evocallaghan: Why does he not check the AMD website or Google
mattmatteh: evocallaghan, well that failed
mattmatteh: the bios locked up after exiting
mattmatteh: now it does turn on
mattmatteh: wonders why the x86 arch typically has to be such junk ( first gigabyte, now asus) . is it really that hard to make a working computer
evocallaghan: mattmatteh:Maybe you should have followed my advice and upgraded the BIOS before tweaking settings !
mattmatteh: evocallaghan, well, this is kinda why i didnt want to mess with the bios at all
evocallaghan: (00:34:23) evocallaghan: I would start with making sure you have the latest BIOS
evocallaghan: (00:34:40) mattmatteh: umm
evocallaghan: (00:34:44) evocallaghan: even before tweaking settings
evocallaghan: Look, I gave you advice, you did not take it what can I do?
mattmatteh: evocallaghan, i am not saying your advice was good or bad
evocallaghan: Open the side of the case, remove the BIOS battery for 120sec and place it back in.
mattmatteh: evocallaghan, looking for a reset button
evocallaghan: Boot the system back up and press F1 if it asks you to.
evocallaghan: No, lissen to my advace and follow it.
evocallaghan: s/advice
mattmatteh: thought there was a reset button that does the same thing without taking out the battery
Deanjo: There is a jumper
Deanjo: Usually beside the battery
redeeman: Deanjo: nvidia dude haven't gotten back to me yet
Deanjo: ping him
evocallaghan: Deanjo: explaining how to find the jummper could be tricky to someone who can't follow the advice I gave.
evocallaghan: So I took the more simple version of telling him to remove the battery which does the same thing.
mattmatteh: steps away for food, will mess with the asus junk soon
Deanjo: Well evocallaghan I'm not sure why you would tell him to flash anyways without at least checking the basics. He doesn't even know if C'n'Q is enabled. (usually is by default IIRC)
Deanjo: such as more /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_available_governors
evocallaghan: Deanjo: Because that's about the first thing you should do with a x86 box doing funny things such as not scaling by default !
Deanjo: He doesn't even know if it is or not and NO that is not the first thing you do. You at least take a look at the scaling policy
evocallaghan: Deanjo: FW upgrades are under rated ! There are very important micro code erraters etc in them..
evocallaghan: Yes, it really *is* the first thing you should do.
Deanjo: Yes they may, more times then not though they are for adding new support for newer CPU's
evocallaghan: In fact, it was a rule when I was working at IBM that you did just this.
Deanjo: Ha, that explains it
evocallaghan: Deanjo:That is what the shorted change logs tell you.
Deanjo: Look at many bios upgrades and you will see that many times a BIOS has a regression in it
evocallaghan: Deanjo: Explains what.
evocallaghan: Not really.
Deanjo: Yes Really
evocallaghan: Prove it.
Deanjo: Easy
evocallaghan: taps fingers..
evocallaghan: Showing one example is not vaild btw, I would like to see a study or a doc that proves other wise else your talking out your ass.
mattmatteh: is booting again
Deanjo: Change logs from a M3N-HD for example. 901 - cured power on regression that appeared in 801, 1401 cured AMD-V regression\\
evocallaghan: Deanjo:So what your saying is they did a follow update the cured there own regression.
Deanjo: A issue that did not exist before the update
Deanjo: They had to "fix" the "fix"
Deanjo: Lets not even mention the seagate firmware fiasco
evocallaghan: You have just proved a few things here. A) Your talking out your ass with no prof or study down to validate your point about not doing BIOS updates which it its self is ridiculous point. B.) Your single example of a regression was shortly followed up with a fix so that's no problem and C) Did these updates fix other issues as well, almost def yes.
Deanjo: Blindly flashing is just plain dumb
Deanjo: lol shortly followed up? 2 weeks later 4 firmware revisions later and a whole lot of data recovery
evocallaghan: and how many companies have you worked for again Deanjo ?
Deanjo: Hmmm, Done work for IBM, Apple, Dell and some contract work for Sun as well
evocallaghan: That's your fault for buy a 'Extream Overclocking' pice of junk with crappy after market service
evocallaghan: And Apple does not upgrade the FW ay?
Deanjo: lol check out a lowly M2A-VM HDMI and check the bios history
evocallaghan: I'll think your find that Apple auto flashes its EFI quite some !
mattmatteh: wow, dont know what did it. but now it seems like it might be working
mattmatteh: bios crash fixed it ?
evocallaghan: Any way, i'm wasting my time trying to explain why a upgrade is infact a good idea to someone who can't seem to get that.
Deanjo: I am quite aware of efi, and they do flash all the time the HD's in the xserves
mattmatteh: but now i wonder if i am stuck at 1 ghz
evocallaghan: mattmatteh: You got back to the BIOS default setup that ships with the MB and prob avoided whatever setting introed the problem
Deanjo: Misconfig of the CPU mattmatteh
mattmatteh: evocallaghan, Deanjo i was thinking that too
mattmatteh: there were few changes from the default ( when i got it, and now)
evocallaghan: mattmatteh: Don't lissen to Deanjo, please upgrade your BIOS to the latest rev.
mattmatteh: and i had to enable cool and quiet, the default was off
mattmatteh: evocallaghan, Deanjo i see what both of you are saying
mattmatteh: evocallaghan, i am even more hesitant to messing with the bios now
mattmatteh: unless i see a change log that suggest i need a fix
mattmatteh: i would rather not go there again.
mattmatteh: would love to see working openfirmware on this
evocallaghan: mattmatteh: Your drama is coming from the fact that your not upgrading and may of hit bugs in the old version
evocallaghan: Don't worry, please upgrade as almost any new MB have a backup rom on board
mattmatteh: evocallaghan, perhaps, but would like to know instead of guess or assume
mattmatteh: evocallaghan, if asus website was easy to navigate i would
mattmatteh: but i would like to avoid that site just as much as the bios
evocallaghan: mattmatteh: Google your MB model + the word 'BIOS' in google
mattmatteh: evocallaghan, i did, but will do again later
mattmatteh: when i booted i was at 1ghz, cpufreq-info showed steps from 1 - 2.5 ghz
mattmatteh: after starting cpufreqd, it went to 2.5, and says only 2.5 is available
Deanjo: http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&product=1&model=M2A-VM%20HDMI&type=map&f_type=3 <----- full of regressions
evocallaghan: http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us
evocallaghan: Deanjo: Almost, "full of regressions" .. that have been fixed.
evocallaghan: *plus* the other bug fixes
mattmatteh: not much happens on that site
mattmatteh: does not have any java stuff enabled
evocallaghan: Deanjo:I see mostly bug fixes and *not* regressions
evocallaghan: Do you know what a regressions is ?
Deanjo: Most of those bugs were introduced with newer updates
evocallaghan: mattmatteh good idea :)
Deanjo: Yes I do, and I have personal experience through that fucking board through and through
evocallaghan: Deanjo: sorry but your talking utter ****
Deanjo: fix one thing and break another
evocallaghan: Talk to your hardware vendor
evocallaghan: I don't care about your "personal experience"s !
Deanjo: lol Believe me, I'm on a first name basis with Asus's engineers
evocallaghan: Everyone is, they all have the same name from china
Deanjo: Hell it cost me $50 in long distance on one the issue proving to them that AMD-V was broken in a bios update
evocallaghan: Any way, I don't have time for this banter about your "personal experience"s
Deanjo: to which they had a beta bios for me the next day
evocallaghan: wow, makes you even more stupid for buying there crap and every spending extra on phone calls debugging there crap for them.
mattmatteh: Deanjo, you have the same board as i ?
Deanjo: Not yours yours is a different model, here is your updates
Deanjo: http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&product=1&model=M2A-VM%20HDMI&type=map&f_type=3
evocallaghan: Should have spent the extra 50$ and got a Tyan
Deanjo: err
evocallaghan: mattmatteh: That's not your board
evocallaghan: please don't lissen to Deanjo else your most likely end up with a screwed up first BIOS and your need to flash again to revert
mattmatteh: i found it
Deanjo: http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&product=1&model=M3A78-EM&type=map&f_type=3
evocallaghan: That's better
mattmatteh: Deanjo, if you are on a first name basis with anyone at asus, please tell them their web site is on the top 10 worst web site designs
Deanjo: Oh I know
Deanjo: lol
Deanjo: slowest fcking servers too
Deanjo: I usually go straight to the ftp
mattmatteh: Deanjo, for example, why does the site need to go black, ask me what OS, give a list of the worst, including DOS,
mattmatteh: all for a simple list of bios updates
mattmatteh: seriously.... what sense does that make
evocallaghan: mattmatteh: just chose other or linux to put the 'usage' stats up
evocallaghan: mattmatteh: they are asking that so they find out what most people use
Deanjo: Ya, they started that in the last few months mattmatteh
mattmatteh: evocallaghan, i would rather not ever visit this site again
evocallaghan: mattmatteh: so they know what to test with in there labs before they bring product to market
mattmatteh: Deanjo, i dont thinkso, i recall this nonsence months ago when i was researching
Deanjo: Ya it was around Oct/Nov IIRc
evocallaghan: if no one picks XP and everyone picks Linux for example they will test Linux in there limited OS range in there labs before time to marker
mattmatteh: gigibytes site was just a little better, which is why i choose them first. but gigabyte was aweful too ( see forums post)
evocallaghan: s/market
mattmatteh: evocallaghan, there are only dos and dos like operating systems listed
evocallaghan: mattmatteh consider buying workstation class hardware from Tyan
mattmatteh: i do not see anything in the change log that suggest i should update the bios
evocallaghan: mattmatteh: you can pick any
mattmatteh: evocallaghan, i did. i wanted to. they didnt have much of anything for a desktop
evocallaghan: mattmatteh: I am telling you the *reason* why its there as you asked
Deanjo: ftp://ftp.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/socketAM2/ <--- might want to bookmark that
mattmatteh: evocallaghan, and i was/am more than willing to pay an extra $300USD for nice hardware
evocallaghan: mattmatteh: yes they do !
Deanjo: Usually updates show up there way before the site
mattmatteh: with openfirmware / coreboot :)
mattmatteh: evocallaghan, link ?
Deanjo: Tyan's are great mb's
Deanjo: My personal choice for servers and workstations
Deanjo: Rock solid
evocallaghan: mattmatteh: tyan.com
mattmatteh: Deanjo, omg.... that took second and was soo simple. why would asus risk loosing customers with their aweful main site
evocallaghan: mattmatteh: pick "system boards"
evocallaghan: there are only two choices "server boards" and "system boards"
Deanjo: Ya, like I say, bookmark it mattmatteh
mattmatteh: evocallaghan, those are server boards
mattmatteh: server boards are usually more than one cpu, and pcix
Deanjo: actually you should bookmark the tw server since it has the updates first ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/ASUS/mb/socketAM2
evocallaghan: mattmatteh: Because they don't speak english and don't care about there customers as they know they will come back next year for there 'Extream Overclocking with extra Extream' next year.
evocallaghan: mattmatteh: no they are not !
evocallaghan: They multi way workstation boards
mattmatteh: evocallaghan, not me. like i said, that lousy website was a reason that i choose gigabyte instead
evocallaghan: They fit the extended ATX for factor fine
evocallaghan: mattmatteh: GB have one of the worst BIOS's in the world
mattmatteh: evocallaghan, yes, i found out the hardway. and returned it
Deanjo: I think that title belongs to MSI evocallaghan
mattmatteh: asus is second to them
evocallaghan: I decompiled one for a client of mine once and it had a micro code update from *2years* ago no less !
Deanjo: Abit used to have the best back in the day....
evocallaghan: Your comparing shit from shit
evocallaghan: Who cares, return the board, go out by a tyan then spend your extra time down the pub or something..
evocallaghan: s/by/buy/
mattmatteh: i have had the asus for a while
mattmatteh: it works, so long as i dont reboot to much and dont mess with the bios
mattmatteh: i have had 50 days uptime with gentoo
evocallaghan: Upgrade your BIOS until your next upgrade
evocallaghan: lol !
mattmatteh: evocallaghan, i dont think i ever want to see that bios again
mattmatteh: its crap
mattmatteh: after several hours, i am back at 2.5 ghz
mattmatteh: that was fun
mattmatteh: waste of time
mattmatteh: junk
mattmatteh: steps out
evocallaghan: ROFL, wow 50 days !
Deanjo: Uptime epenis's mean just a bunch of systems without security updates applied. Yummy
evocallaghan: -bash-3.2$ uptime
evocallaghan: 1:59am up 1 825 day(s), 1:09, 2 users, load average: 8.26, 8.83, 9.33
redeeman: damn you beat me
evocallaghan: Deanjo:Again you prove you know next to nothing.
redeeman: im only 1265
evocallaghan: :)
redeeman: im gonna let it run till 1337
redeeman: and replace it
redeeman: i already have the replacement
evocallaghan: hehe
redeeman: but no need to rush things :)
Deanjo: evocallaghan, there have been many security updates in the past that can only be applied with patched kernel
redeeman: evocallaghan: kernel?
evocallaghan: $ uname -s
evocallaghan: SunOS
redeeman: oh, mine is linux
redeeman: would have had a year more uptime if the box didn't need to be moved
evocallaghan: Deanjo: You can patch the kernel and bring it up without needing to reboot the old one
evocallaghan: redeeman: your doing well for a linux box
redeeman: linux is stable
redeeman: when managed properly
redeeman: ;)
evocallaghan: pats redeeman on the back
redeeman: i could reach 1825 days if i wanted :P
evocallaghan: Can be alright yea.
redeeman: really, the only thing that limits me is hardware
evocallaghan: SPARC is good
redeeman: and while i do think the maxtor disks may be a tad unhappy about the prospect of another year
redeeman: i think it could work
Deanjo: evocallaghan, ksplice is needed for that in linux
redeeman: ksplice and only do certain things though
evocallaghan: Deanjo: and?
Deanjo: Well considering that ksplice didn't even exit until about a year ago
Deanjo: exist
evocallaghan: ksplice does not look like something I would run in production thanks !
evocallaghan: My point.
evocallaghan: So who cares.
Deanjo: Well you just said that applying updates to the kernel does not need rebooting
evocallaghan: redeeman: have I seen you in avr before?
redeeman: you most probably have
evocallaghan: Deanjo we are not talking about linux
redeeman: or well - it's a possibility
Deanjo: Well that is exactly what I was referring to when I said yummy
evocallaghan: Deanjo we are talking about production systems and my uptime clearly predates any silly project. Although it does have a few good ideas there I will hand it that.
evocallaghan: redeeman: :)
evocallaghan: redeeman: I'm porting our OS to MIPS
evocallaghan: Looking for a nice JTAG.
evocallaghan: Most "security updates" you speak of that actually effect _your_ env are userland problems Deanjo. Further to this, Most proper kernels don't have too many kernel level security problems to such a degree that you need to reboot every two weeks unless you have some LinOox reverse engineered broadcom wireless driver.
Deanjo: I never said reboot every couple of weeks
evocallaghan: That was clearly a example
evocallaghan: OK, its been emotional.
evocallaghan: Laters folks
Milyardo: Am I special or something? because for the last month that I've had an ATi card, I've been able to reproduce most problems people are having with fglrx
Deanjo: lol
Milyardo: Its true
Deanjo: Murphy's Law
Deanjo: w00t!!! Mythbusters new season starts tonight
redeeman: nice
Milyardo: I have found very repeatable cases where X does crash, unlike Nvdia's driver when it seems like the driver crashes only when /dev/random % 10 == 0
Milyardo: Sweet
Deanjo: lol, na, we aren't geeks...
Deanjo: at all
Deanjo: :D
Deanjo: 2 hour episode to boot
Deanjo: Sounds good "The team test four fables which involve a demolition derby, to fulfill their need to mash some metal. "
russell_h: does xf86-video-ati support KMS on r7xx?
Milyardo: russell_h: I would assume not
