Phoronix IRC Log: 2009-04-04

peppo: question: fglrx 8.59.2 = 9.3? can someone running 9.3 check their dmesg (dmesg|grep fglrx)?
Lightkey: peppo: http://www.phoronix.net/image.php?id=amd_catalyst93_composite&image=amd_catalyst93_6_lrg why not look on Phoronix instead?
reisi: new to the phoronix forums I though of stopping by and asking if anyone know if it's ok to discuss/ask tips for buying new computer on Forums > Hardware > General hardware?
reisi: hmm apparently there's someone looking for a new notebook and didn't get the thread closed, i guess it's ok
mwme: surely its okay to ask for advice
mwme: but the answers should be handled with care, as personal opinions differ a lot sometimes
reisi: yeah, i actually decided against after writing the post a bit :)
reisi: it might blow up on my amd vs. intel performance-per-buck discussion, or later with ati vs. nvidia question :D
reisi: or even both
reisi: mwme: you don't happen to own a ati card (and run linux)?
Erektium: I do
maligor: yeh, I'm running amd cards also
maligor: reisi, you'll want to google experiences on specific laptops before you buy if you intend to install linux on it tho :P
maligor: but that's true for any laptop
maligor: atleast some asus model had weird video bios and weird configuration
reisi: no laptops anymore thanks :)
reisi: i was thinking of buying a ATI RADEON HD 4650 based gfx card for the system
reisi: Erektium: maligor: you don't happen to have above 4650 with two 1280x1024 displays connected?
maligor: no, but I doubt it would have issues
maligor: aside from the typical fglrx issues
reisi: hmm at least there's a relevant ubuntu bug posted and should be fixed with the latest intrepid
maligor: like no vsync on xvideo and stuff
reisi: hmm that bug was with radeon driver; no fglrx used.. i've only got experience with nvidia drivers and fglrx way before AMD bought ati
reisi: i've read fglrx has gotten way much better than it used to, even releases are somewhat in sync with windows drivers
reisi: hmm great radeon driver supports xrandr 1.2
maligor: so does fglrx
Ivanovic: the open source radeon(hd) driver is quite okay
Ivanovic: and the propriatary and closed fglrx basically works, too
reisi: hmm ok great news :)
reisi: i was expecting something like nvidias twinview hack but xrandr support is great news
reisi: xv seems to be supported with both drivers
reisi: but with fglrx i could start using blender again..
maligor: sure, blender works okeyish
maligor: there's some minor ui issues
maligor: but they'll be pretty much gone in blender 2.50
reisi: no surprise there :) i've been using it from the 1.X series when they still had that company developing it closed-source
maligor: reisi, I mean the ui issues on ati cards will be fixed in 2.50 :P
maligor: weird.. Overlap mode in 2.50 works also now, I wonder if it's fglrx change or something in 250
redeeman: Deanjo: how long does roland typically use to get back?
Deanjo: It depends, at most usually a day or two, depending on his workload. I've only got a response from him once on the weekend
redeeman: well i was thinking after he responded to initial mail
redeeman: that was monday
Deanjo: depends on the issue and what he has on his plate I guess
redeeman: issue: ignored nvidia crashes
Deanjo: I know he's been working hard on the 185's as of late
redeeman: i think more people would apreciate bugfixes rather than many more fancy new features
redeeman: after all, they may be safe with their current card
redeeman: but then they buy a new
redeeman: and BAM
Deanjo: well for most they work
Deanjo: thus the concentration on features
redeeman: yes but it's getting really really easy to be part of those where it doesn't
GNU\colossus: so don't buy nvidia :)
redeeman: yes
Deanjo: just threw out the ati system today
redeeman: was it plagued by an nvidia chipset?
Deanjo: No, it was a ati board. Replaced it with a nv chipset and shit started working properly
Deanjo: Put in the M3N72-D and all issues were gone
GNU\colossus: HAAAAAAAAAA-LELUJA!
GNU\colossus: ;)
Deanjo: Heh, even an exorcism provided by the vatican couldn't help that ATI board
Deanjo: (can actually run vm's now without contant lockups)
Deanjo: *constant
nikki93: Can an E8500 be fine for next 2 years?
nikki93: I'm thinking of quad vs duo
GNU\colossus: my q6600 will do for me
GNU\colossus: don't know about your specific needs though
nikki93: Games.
nikki93: Graphix.
nikki93: Music tracking.
nikki93: (I make games on Linux, play games on Windows)
Ivanovic: just look back at the cpu speeds from two years ago
Ivanovic: and see how good those are still today
Ivanovic: as in: can you still play (recent) games on windows with an core2duo released in 2006 (allendale series) that has about 2GHz ?
Ivanovic: and the clear answer will most likely be: should work out nicely
Ivanovic: s/allendale/conroe
nikki93: GTX 285 seems to be a good card.
nikki93: I'll ask again, how's it on Linux?
Deanjo: We replied to that already
Deanjo: 95% have no issues and 5% do
maligor: and 90.1% of what Deanjo said is made up?
Deanjo: No, personally all the linux peeps I know in town don't have an issue
maligor: assuming the drivers state that it's supported, it'll probably work fine
Deanjo: You can't always account for hardware quirks though
Deanjo: or software
maligor: or blue smoke
Deanjo: Or naked women
maligor: opens up the case to look for the naked women
Deanjo: There is no 100% guaranteed to work part out there for any OS
Ivanovic: naked women?
Ivanovic: where?
Ivanovic: does not see any here
Ivanovic: :(
Deanjo: puts the naked women back into the closet until Ivanovic is gone
Ivanovic: will stay around varily for as long as it takes that the women are back...
Deanjo: We have stippers in here all the time when your not around
Deanjo: *strippers
Ivanovic: is around all the time
redeeman: sends log to deanjo's wife
Ivanovic: though it seems that i am blind since i never saw those women
Deanjo: They won't come in when your here. Something about a restraining order.......
Ivanovic: lies, all lies!
Ivanovic: redeeman: are you sure about the "wife" part?
Ivanovic: was it not mom?
Ivanovic: ;)
redeeman: hmmm well... for sanity reasons i didn't confirm it :P
redeeman: everyone is happier that way :P
Deanjo: Heh, It's her fault anyways. If she would have only let me hire the french maid......
redeeman: i have the solution for you
redeeman: tell her that either it's the maid that does all the work, or her
redeeman: ofcourse you do run the slight risk of sleeping on the couch, or garden
redeeman: or possibly both
redeeman: though that's rare
Deanjo: No worries, I made sure when I got married that I have all the necessities in the garage :D
redeeman: see that's the great thing with a house fully controlled with networked microcontrollers
Deanjo: heh
redeeman: you cant get thrown out, or the house gets totally nonfunctional
Deanjo: Hmmm, starting to think of getting rid of a bunch of these towers in my room and setting them up in rack
Deanjo: 4U's are pretty cheap nowdays
maligor: Deanjo, you have a server rack in the garage?
Deanjo: Ya I made one for the amps a few years back
