Phoronix IRC Log: 2009-04-03

nikki93: Is it worth getting an i7 now?
nikki93: How's GTX 285 with Linux?
redeeman: hmm
redeeman: what is the difference between d945gclf2 and d945gclf2d ?
peppo: question: fglrx 8.59.2 = 9.3? can someone running 9.3 check their dmesg (dmesg|grep fglrx)
peppo: ?
peppo: thanks.
maikmerten: <-- SavageX. Just in case this hasn't been communicated yet: Nexuiz 2.5 is out. http://www.alientrap.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4448
nikki93: How's GTX 285 on Linux?
Deanjo: Works fine nikki93
nikki93: Deanjo: Thanks for the quick reply
Deanjo: lol just got back from work
nikki93: Sure it works?
nikki93: I'm getting one.
Deanjo: Ya it works, I guess some people have some issues though with powermizer. Like everything else, Works for 95% and there is always 5% that seem to have issues.
Deanjo: I'll have a couple of 275's in a couple of weeks
nikki93: Damn.
nikki93: I wanna be in the 95%.
nikki93: hopes sincerely
redeeman: and does nvidia respond to the 20+ pages thread about troubles? last time was in 2008
Deanjo: They reply to emails
redeeman: basically that response was: "im afraid we cant(be bothered to even try) replicating it... tough luck, you already paid"
redeeman: i know
redeeman: i emailed them
redeeman: and roland responded
redeeman: saying he'd look into it
redeeman: but i doubt it will amount to anything
Deanjo: You got Hui?
redeeman: yes
Deanjo: He's pretty good at getting back
redeeman: yes he responded very quickly
redeeman: but will he fix it?
redeeman: i guess not
redeeman: i suspect it's some hardware design/production issue
Deanjo: Ya, he's setup a few odd ball configs to test there for me in the past
redeeman: and that nvidia is not ever going to admit it
Deanjo: ie 2x8800GT's and a 780a enabled to troubleshoot an SLI issue
redeeman: the thing is, i've now had my card swapped two times at the shop in case that was the case
redeeman: so i think the chance of that, is very low now
redeeman: i also tried some other cards
nikki93: Bah whatever. So should I get GTX 285 or not? :P
redeeman: all which works
redeeman: so this leaves either driver issue or hardware production/design flaw affecting LOTS of cards
redeeman: if it's driver issue, they should be able to replicate it fairly easily
redeeman: and make SOME workaround
redeeman: i have certainly been able to replicate on multiple boxes easily
Deanjo: The one thing that I do notice is that alot of the issues seem to appear on intel chipsets
redeeman: yes, this particular issue, however, also some are not
redeeman: so i don't think it's that easy
Deanjo: Ya I know, just an observation
redeeman: but in any case
redeeman: if nvidia told me
Deanjo: Also gentoo'ers seem to get it worse then others
redeeman: "your intel chipset is fucked"
redeeman: that would be an acceptable response
redeeman: not really
redeeman: there are more non-gentoo'ers in that thread than gentooers
redeeman: i've actually done some real analysis of the affected
redeeman: to try and find some clue
Deanjo: You got through some of those long threads and the gentoo'ers seem to make up 25+%
redeeman: yeah but many of those posting have unrelated issues
redeeman: and needs to be discounted
Deanjo: Ya it may be because gentoo is not so much a "out of the can" solution
redeeman: the bug affects both xorg server 1.3 and 1.5
Deanjo: Anyhow's how you've been keeping?
redeeman: i have been having trouble with my watercooler
Deanjo: leaking?
redeeman: it seems zalman used sub standard flow meters
redeeman: which have a design flaw
redeeman: probably korean... lol
Deanjo: lol what isn't nowdays
redeeman: stuff that works...
redeeman: but seriously
redeeman: what brilliant person fails at designing a flow meter?!
Deanjo: It's rare to see a "made in japan" sticker nowdays
redeeman: the spinning thingie
redeeman: can go out against the glass
redeeman: and fasten itself with the water suction
redeeman: lol
redeeman: they haven't been complete idiots though
redeeman: water still flows even with it jammed
Deanjo: I was in Ukraine for a few weeks, beautiful scenery, net totally sucks
redeeman: but, it then does not provide feedback
redeeman: and then the control system shuts off the pump
Deanjo: Ya, I tend to keep to the big beefy coolers for less headaches
redeeman: i have found the solution
redeeman: i will not use crappy merchandise anymore
Deanjo: Think I should own share in Thermalright by now lol
redeeman: i shall instead revert to designing solutions myself
redeeman: it's the only way.....
redeeman: that thing was $500 though
redeeman: so im a tad pissed
Deanjo: Ya, they really soak ya for that stuff
redeeman: i was happy up until it started failing
redeeman: i knew it was expensive, but i didn't care
redeeman: now i have had to go and de-recommend them to all my friends
Deanjo: Thinking of getting a phase change unit
Deanjo: They are getting hard to find nowdays
Deanjo: Hmm, I think I need to find a new mirror for my suse. Germany seems to get stuck doing the rsyncs
Deanjo: Think they should have a --smack-server-if-unresponsive for 30 secs
Deanjo: option
rainbyte: hi
