Phoronix IRC Log: 2009-03-29

oscar: hey - i'm looking for the best driver for a radeon x800xl (R430 chipset), i am on debian - where do i start?
GNU\colossus: oscar: just use "radeon"
oscar: okay, so all this fglrx stuff is not what iw ant?
Ivanovic: depends on what you want...
oscar: well i've got basic video right now; i would like to get some 3d going as the card is more then capable
Ivanovic: what "kind" of 3d do you want?
Ivanovic: just spinning cube and stuff like this or gaming?
Ivanovic: if you want to play games like ut2k3 or such, install fglrx
Ivanovic: since the speed in 3d with the cards and mesa is not too great yet
oscar: is there some reason why I wouldnt want to install the best one?; i am not bothered where the source came from
Ivanovic: 'best' always depends on the point of view
oscar: i suppose its maybe not as clear cut as "best one"
Ivanovic: if best means "rock solid, no crash over years": use radeon
maligor: oscar, you can use fglrx but it's buggy on older cards
Ivanovic: if best means "many frames per second in 3D games though sometimes crashing the system": use fglrx
maligor: that's actually pretty rare
maligor: the crashing the system that is
oscar: alright; well i'll give fglrx a go and if its crappy then i'll change
Ivanovic: maligor: but it happens a lot more frequently than with radeon
maligor: note that catalyst 9.4 will drop support for your card
oscar: but will fglrx even support my card being an R430?
Ivanovic: 9.3 does support your card
Ivanovic: 9.4 and later will not support it anymore
oscar: where can i get the old version from will all the supporting stuff?
oscar: Debian repository seem to have 12.4?
maligor: debian should have 9.2
maligor: oh, no, 8-12
oscar: yeh i think i got a bit retarded there guys, sorry
oscar: 8-12-4 it is
oscar: how old and crumby is 8-12?
oscar: it looks like theres a few .debs in the debian ftp of v9.2 - i'll pinch them
maligor: 8.12 means it was release in 2008/12
maligor: yeah, 9.2 is in testing/unstable
maligor: I can't recommend 9.3 since it seems to have a slight issue with overlays
maligor: but dunno if it'd be an issue with r400 series
oscar: can i enable testing stuff from within synaptic?, or am i doing all this manually. I'm rather well experienced in totally screwing up my xorg.conf
maligor: http://jaqque.sbih.org/kplug/apt-pinning.html
maligor: http://wiki.debian.org/AptPinning
oscar: wow thats really cool
oscar: ok fingers crossed guys; thanks heaps for your help
cxo: After you bind a MYSQL_BIND with a MYSQL_STMT, can you change bind.buffer(*char), without re-binding before mysql_stmt_execute();
cxo: woops
Lightkey: O_RLY
mwme: bows to the creator of the PTS. awesome work :)
SlickMcRunfast: PTS?
mwme: Phoronix Test Suite
SlickMcRunfast: ah
SlickMcRunfast: that beast is great
cxo: Can someone run 20 lines of code for me to test something? (you'd need libxine-dev and libselinux.so)
michaellarabel: Hi mwme, thanks
michaellarabel: Glad to hear it :)
mwme: :D
michaellarabel: The best though is yet to come :)
mwme: the graphical interface? :)
michaellarabel: Beyond that :P
Lightkey: world peace?
mwme: world peace would be nice. and Obama might help us some :P
Lightkey: uh..
Azerthoth: HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Azerthoth: you got hopenitized
michaellarabel: Obama does so much more harm than good.
mwme: hmmm
Azerthoth: michaellarabel, not worth the effort, not enough time in the day to teach logic to the hopenitized
mwme: with china, india and africa rising we need to focus on our strong points. which is ethics and a social way of being :P
mwme: and obama is a lot smarter than the president before him
Azerthoth: http://z.about.com/d/politicalhumor/1/0/z/8/2/hopenosis.gif
mwme: he knows about the challenges and will try to get us there. the bush guy tried the old stylish system based on fear. people are not that stupid anymore to buy that
mwme: at least i hope so
mwme: and yeah, politicians are manipulating the masses. obama does that also. but he does at least try to stay away from evil
Azerthoth: really, not stupid enough to fall for a president whose greatest accomplishments so far have been appearing on late night talk shows and ESPN?
michaellarabel: mwme: Obama is such an awful president already, don't even get me started though, phoronix isn't a political site :)
mwme: the late night talk was giving us the feeling that he is one of us - and i have to mention that i am not even american
mwme: oh, sorry. i slipped into this :P
mwme: i blame it on the 2 beers :P
michaellarabel: you can continue your discussion, that's fine, I will just sit on the side and laugh.
mwme: hehehe
bkero: chortles
cxo: struggles to say mwme
mwme: ok, ok. i admit it was a really bad idea to swing political. i am sorry guys :)
mwme: please allow some drunk german to dream about world peace while he is struggeling with his geek life
mwme: i will do it silently :)
Lightkey: besser is dat
cxo: Obama obama!
michaellarabel: Romney Romney!
bkero: Ron Paul Ron Paul
redeeman: me me
cxo: Phoronix Phoronix!
