monreal: The ATI R500 series is the best supported one in linux (using free drivers) right?
raevol: monreal: maybe get a better answer in #radeon
monreal: oh, didn't know about this chan, thx
raevol: no worries, just figured better chances of someone there knowing :)
redeeman: R500 should be pretty good supported yes
redeeman: i think it's better than R300/400
peppot: anyone have any pointers for improving 2d performance or performance overall with fglrx? running 8.6 (prerelease ubuntu version) on ubuntu jaunty with a radeon mobility hd 3470
evocallaghan: Anyone know if you can upgrade the BIOS of the new Asus MB's without Windows ?
maligor: should be possible
maligor: I think they tend to have update software in the bios itself
maligor: you just need a usb drive with fat
maligor: or you can also use FreeDOS :P
maligor: I have a 32mb CF Card with it installed for bios stuff
evocallaghan: OK
evocallaghan: BIOS's are full of bugs
evocallaghan: So that will be the first thing I will need to upgrade
evocallaghan: umm this is the board http://www.asus.com/Product.aspx?P_ID=lhJiLTN5huPfCVkW
maligor: AM3 huh?
maligor: ASUS EZ Flash 2
evocallaghan: Oh yes it says EZ-Flash 2
evocallaghan: silly me
maligor: it means it's bios built-in
evocallaghan: Yea DDR3 stuff
evocallaghan: another one of these crappy MB's
evocallaghan: lets see how it goes :/
maligor: atleast I can use usb fat32 formatted stuff with this board
maligor: it doesn't understand ext3 for some reason
evocallaghan: haha
evocallaghan: no..
evocallaghan: I hope its got a bit of speed :/
evocallaghan: Will wack SXCE111 on there.
maligor: not a clue what that is
evocallaghan: Solaris
evocallaghan: http://www.opensolaris.org/os/downloads/sol_ex_dvd_1/
evocallaghan: I got a pair of these
evocallaghan: 2 x Samsung SpinPoint F1 640GB Hard Drive SATAII 7200rpm 16MB Cache - OEM
evocallaghan: Should be nice under a zpool
maligor: oh, have a nice reinstallation ;)
maligor: if you've never used Solaris, it'll be hell
evocallaghan: haha, why is that?
maligor: you'll see
evocallaghan: Umm, no I really wont
maligor: It'll feel like hitting your own head with a very large sledgehammer for no apparent reason
evocallaghan: I used *nix for years
evocallaghan: Not really
maligor: ah.. the 'real' unices?
maligor: since linux is pretty nice and easy to use
evocallaghan: Irix, Solaris, Linux, FreeBSD, AIX and NetBSD you name it
maligor: then it'll probably be exiting to see if solaris boots
evocallaghan: Linux is for idiotes. If you think its hard to install a OS really means your not bother much to learn.
evocallaghan: I'm sure it will fly
evocallaghan: Running fine on my laptop here
evocallaghan: Infact a lot quicker then Ubuntu
maligor: I just use debian
evocallaghan: is wondering when maligor acturly used solaris and for what, how long for etc..
maligor: mmm
maligor: solaris 9 maybe? or 8?
evocallaghan: ba hahaha
evocallaghan: OK, things have greatly changed man..
evocallaghan: This is the 2000's now..
maligor: it was quite similar but some stuff were seriously braindead
evocallaghan: Pick any Linux distro from around there and its about the same or worse
evocallaghan: Maybe you should take a peak at a modern build !
maligor: pretty sure all solaris 8 was 2000's too
evocallaghan: wifi support is Solaris for example is much better then Linux.
maligor: I tried it again when they released the opensolaris
maligor: it wasn't really much better back then
evocallaghan: solaris 8 has been EOL'ed for ages now !
evocallaghan: past years old !
maligor: it might've been solaris 9 then
evocallaghan: anyway your comparing like RedHat 6 to Ubuntu 8.04
evocallaghan: Pick a recent build of SXCE
evocallaghan: The GUI installer is easier to use then ubuntu if that's what you really care about
evocallaghan: maligor: here is a picture of a modern solaris desktop and a installer off a livecd http://blogs.sun.com/tao/resource/OS2008-Review/Installation1.JPG
maligor: looks like a dreadful camera
evocallaghan: :p
maligor: and looks like the horrible gnome default setup
evocallaghan: who is sane and uses gnome ?
evocallaghan: gnomes are for gardeans !
evocallaghan: s/gardens
evocallaghan: Any way, this has been very educational i'm sure but I must rush off to eat something.
maligor: yes, correct, I'm not sane
