Phoronix IRC Log: 2009-03-19
evocallaghan: low pri news, vote for Flash on FreeBSD => http://bugs.adobe.com/jira/browse/FP-1060
redeeman: lol why would i possibly want to vote for crap to be infesting freebsd?
redeeman: they have done nothing wrong to me
evocallaghan: some people may want it
jirka: hello all, i would like to register to phoronix forums, but with my best will, i am not able to recognize letters on registration captcha :-|, images in my browser are quite, um , abstract ...
jirka: could somebody give me a hint or something please?
punzada: jirka: i pointed out the same thing earlier, still hasn't been fixed apparently
punzada: no fix as of yet
jirka: hmhm, ok, i'll check it later, thank you
michaellarabel: superdump: How did your OS X PTS testing go?
superdump: i don't really have enough hdd space
superdump: i'm going to have to set it installing again targeting an external drive
superdump: i only have one of the original macbooks at the moment :)
superdump: 1.83GHz core duo, 2GB RAM, intel gma950
michaellarabel: superdump: What is the output of: phoronix-test-suite system-info So I can make sure it at least outputs right for the original MacBook
superdump: michaellarabel: http://pastebin.com/m3d7ad510
superdump: should be 2 cores
superdump: i guess the display server should be filled in with something
superdump: and it does do opengl
superdump: the rest looks correct at first glance
michaellarabel: hmmm I'll have to fire up my MacMini to see if there are some regressions in the Mac code paths
superdump: in the meantime i'll run install all
superdump: michaellarabel: how do i change the path that is used to compile and install all the tests?
michaellarabel: ~/.phoronix-test-suiste/user-config.xml
superdump: ta
Kano: hi michaellarabel , do you think it is normal that you need a login to get the ati sdk?
michaellarabel: Yes, it's normal for the developer central area, unfortunately.
Kano: example mplayer code is not in there or?
michaellarabel: mplayer code for what?
Kano: would be a bit small with 578k
Kano: well only a few sensors, who needs those...
Kano: btw. did you try the 3d acc for vbox yourself?
michaellarabel: I am actually doing that right now
Kano: it only worked with u 8.10
Kano: but while compiz worked the mouse cursor was invisable
Kano: it does not work with xserver 1.4 or 1.6 yet
michaellarabel: I am going to do some benchmarking
Kano: really? which benchmarks could you run with it
Kano: gl2benchmark only showed black or crashed
Kano: extreme tuxracer did not work too
michaellarabel: hmmm then maybe not, I am still setting it up.
Kano: did you try my 2.6.29 test image?
Kano: i have got a script for that ;)
michaellarabel: Not yet, still very busy and the X58 system is just sitting there
Kano: try it
Kano: there is an installer , for us lang it could even work, some postfixes are possible for LANG=en_US.UTF-8 overrides however
Kano: it defaults to C after install
Kano: ati should begin providing official fglrx patches for 2.6.29. the one i used is full overkill... 1700 lines or so
Kano: michaellarabel: i would not spend time for benchmarking vbox, it is not ready for that
michaellarabel: I will see once I get the system setup
superdump: michaellarabel: by the way, i get a lot of "rm: conftest.dSYM: is a directory" during the install all process
superdump: is that intended or should they be rm -r ?
michaellarabel: should be rf. I am trying to think there it would be "conftest.dSYM"\
JayF: hi, anyone knows an shell-command to generate high cpu-load for about 15 minutes?
JayF: just wanna test if my new cooling solution is enough for the cpu :o)
michaellarabel: JayF: phoronix-test-suite batch-benchmark graphics-magick :)
JayF: okay, i will test this
JayF: but is there a native command which i also can use?
JayF: just in case i would like to test a fresh installed system
JayF: michaellarabel: any ideas?
michaellarabel: No, there's no good built-in command to test.
JayF: hm, i got no 'graphics-magick' test listed
michaellarabel: What version are you using?
JayF: Phoronix Test Suite v1.4.2 (ORKDAL)
michaellarabel: JayF: that's an old version.... Try stresscpu2 then
JayF: sounds good :o)
JayF: wow! and even works!
JayF: wow! unbelivable
JayF: so its nice to see that my cooling solution has no chanca against an 125W cpu @ full load :o)
maligor: buy one of the monster sinks
JayF: got one :o)
maligor: buy a even bigger one
JayF: only the thermalright sinks are bigger
JayF: but the thermalright mounting kids are crap
maligor: heh, what do you have?
JayF: (thes words came from an ex-thermalright fanboy)
JayF: got a noctua (nh-u12p) now
maligor: one of the pipes + stacked metal sheets eh
JayF: (has a much better mountig kid :o)
JayF: jow
maligor: http://www.frostytech.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=2346 :P
maligor: they're all pretty similar size tho I guess
maligor: anyway, shouldn't those sinks drown 125W?
JayF: jo
maligor: http://www.frostytech.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=2273
maligor: hoho :P
maligor: I guess that's the bigger one you mean
maligor: oh no.. that's coolermaster
maligor: at 1kg it's bit of a monster tho
JayF: by the way: do you call them tower sinks too?
JayF: ...where ever u came frrom?
maligor: I don't talk that much about heatsinks :P
maligor: I just enjoy looking at naked heatsink porn sometimes, massive oversized sinks are always amusing :)
JayF: its kind of funny becourse i recodnise that europeans createw english words
maligor: ofcourse I have one of the massive ones too
JayF: ...that doesn't really exist (in english :o)
maligor: not a tower tho
JayF: which model do u have?
maligor: Zalman CNPS9700
JayF: bbl (eating something)
maligor: http://www.zalman.co.kr/eng/product/Product_Read.asp?idx=164
maligor: that monster
JayF: okay, going to make some changes at my fan config
JayF: cu later
Kano: hi michaellarabel , did you get 3d running with vbox
michaellarabel: No, vBox didn't even want to install Ubuntu fully (got stuck at 15% on installation)
Kano: i only tested it in live mode
Kano: the script i showed you works live
Kano: i test lots of things with vbox as you might know ;)
Kano: of course i tested 3d support
Kano: in live mode you just can not use the guest install option
Kano: therefore i download the iso the gui would give you with the addons from the net, loop mount it and then execute the installer
Kano: after that i kill x
Kano: or basically i restart gdm/kdm or whatever because in u 9.04 x kill is blocked so you have to do that
Kano: i have got 2 scripts, one for standard versions and one for the beta
Kano: http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=15524
Kano: lots of issues still
Kano: "OpenGL guest acceleration (added with 2.1) is very slow."
Kano: well it is not only slow it is incomplete, if you want to run more than glxgears you have to seek *g*
redeeman: seek?
Kano: redeeman: seek a suitable benchmark
Kano: not even tuxracer ran with it - that can be used with software opengl *g*
Kano: that means even with ati driver you can play it (without dri support), not fast but it runs
Kano: but it does not start within vbox
Kano: if somebody likes to try, get vbox 2.2.0_BETA1 and run
Kano: http://kanotix.com/files/fix/install-vbox-addons-beta.sh
Kano: inside your guest
Kano: something with xserver 1.5 preferred, newer -> no x at all, older -> no 3d
Kano: http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/2.2.0_BETA1/
raevol: what's this for?
Kano: you dont know virtual box?
raevol: i do
Kano: you used linux guests with it?
raevol: what's the addons script for? just getttting 3d?
raevol: yea
raevol: err well no, i havent done much with linux guests, just toyed around with arch
Kano: basically i wrote it for generic use
Kano: i just added the VER=.. override for that beta
raevol: ah cool
Kano: you need it for mouse integration, dynamic resizing (using VboxClient), shared folders und such things
raevol: right
raevol: cool
Kano: when you install it you can resize the client window and gnome or kde will resize too
raevol: no i've used additions, it's cool, was just wondering what in particular that script did, i came in lame
raevol: late*
Kano: raevol: well usually you select install guest addons in menu
raevol: right but with the beta that won't work
raevol: i gotcha i gotcha :)
Kano: but when you use live images then it is hard to select it in the menu
Kano: therefore it downloads the iso
raevol: i see
Kano: i wanted to dl. only the needed package, but they did not like to make the content available as extra dl. this would be much smaller than 20 mb
Kano: at least they added a LATEST.TXT file after i suggested it. if no beta is used the script can fetch always the lastest code without a change
Kano: nvidia also has got latest files, but in 99% they are outdated -> useless
slaine_: hey guys, quick pts question
slaine_: I've run some darwin benchmarks on my macbookpro using 10.5.6 and the latest 10.6 seed from apple
slaine_: Is there an easy way to compare the resulting xml file, i.e. get side by side graphs etc.
slaine_: Or do I have manually splice stuff my self with the xml result file
slaine_: michaellarabel: any suggestions ?
Kano: you can use the combine featur
Kano: merge-results : Merge multiple sets of results
michaellarabel: slaine_: What kano said
slaine_: cool
Milyardo: Also putting in the global ID of a previous benchmark, will automaticly compare the results of the benchmark being run to the one being inputted
Milyardo: for future use
slaine_: just trying to open the other set at the moment
slaine_: results are on a different partition
michaellarabel: slaine_: Is there a public, legal seed for 10.6?
slaine_: no, but I'm a legal seed recipient from Apple
slaine_: I obviously won't be able to release my results to you guys
slaine_: which is unfortunate
slaine_: but it might help spot regressions in seed releases etc.
michaellarabel: Ah, okay. If you could.... Run: phoronix-test-suite system-info and phoronix-test-suite diagnostics and email me the information that would be nice. Just want to make sure nothing is broken with PTS in 10.6. Nothing confidential should be in either one of those outputs in regards to apple seeds.
slaine_: ok
michaellarabel: michael [at] phoronix.com
slaine_: nod
michaellarabel: Thanks
slaine_: hmm, actually, looking at the result folder, there's a few things missing
slaine_: specifically the composite.xml
slaine_: I'll boot into 10.6 now and run those commands before I head to bed
slaine_: bbs
Milyardo: slaine_: If you have a webserver I can send you a copy my of PTS web interface I've been working on
Milyardo: damn he left
michaellarabel: Milyardo: what does your web interface look like?
Milyardo: its not very complex
Milyardo: its relies on SSH for everything
Milyardo: for running the test, and for copy test results to the webserver
michaellarabel: Mind sending it over? I have something else under development that does that, but using the PTS architecture
Milyardo: it also installs PTS with only a hostname and root pw
Milyardo: Sure
Milyardo: I'll email it when I get home
michaellarabel: Thanks
michaellarabel: michael [at] phoronix.com
dmb: so people who have r500s and bellow now HAVE to use the open source driver?
dmb: even in the next release of ubuntu?
dmb: jaunty
michaellarabel: dmb: Yes
michaellarabel: well, unless of course you selectively downgraded your X Server to version 1.5, etc.
Hxal: I wonder how shafted that made their customers feel
Milyardo: Why feel shafted?
Milyardo: I don't understand that
Milyardo: AMD said they're dirverting their efforts toweard the Open Source driver for r500 support
Milyardo: thats a good thing not bad
Milyardo: *toward
Milyardo: If they did the samething for r700 GPUs(which I have) tomarrow, I'd be estatic
Hxal: I understood that they're diverting their effort towards supporting new GPUs only; while leaving r500- to the open source driver
Milyardo: Thats for fglrx developement
Milyardo: and whats wrong with r500 support with the open source driver?
Kano: Milyardo: thats a really good thing ;) all works is done by 3-4 ppl now for oss drivers *g*
Kano: Milyardo: i would like to know how big the fglrx "team" is
Hxal: the article says "Will this move generate greater benefits within the open-source ATI stack? It does not appear AMD will be ramping up on their open-source efforts."
Milyardo: Kano: They probably only have a handful of developers like the open source drivers
Milyardo: but what they have is QA
Milyardo: and access to the hardware
Milyardo: which is something the Open Source developers have trouble with
Hxal: so basically they said "we didn't write good drivers for your cards and we now never will, sucks to be you"
Kano: dmb: for xserver 1.6+
Kano: but fglrx is a really bad driver for r600+
Kano: if you want to watch a dvd you have got switch to oss driver
Kano: what a mess
Hxal: it's really sad, because the hardware looks so hot
Milyardo: I'd help with the r700 driver development
Milyardo: but I wouldn't even know where to begin o.o
Hxal: I think most people working on the current drivers started out from the same position :P
raevol: Milyardo: #radeon ;) haha
Kano: Milyardo: i guess the mesa hack can only be done by devs with deeper knowledge
Milyardo: :)
ognirc: g'night all
evocallaghan: Kano: Howdy
