Phoronix IRC Log: 2009-03-13

Garfeild: hi all
Garfeild: can anybody help with specviewperf?
Garfeild: i have error when i'm tryng to run ./Configure: http://pastebin.com/d7ed3df13
Garfeild: hm...(
Garfeild: or maybe some help about fbconfig error of startup?
Kano: hi michaellarabel , could you test how many monitors work with the firegl cards compared to standard radeon cards - maybe using 2 of em to connect 4
Kano: specviewperf is nice, but not everybody needs it
Garfeild: Kano: why?
Kano: Garfeild: because there must be some differences, as multi monitor support (more than 2) was somehow restricted to firegl
Kano: there was a demo with 6 or 8 monitors
Kano: but with firegl cards
Kano: 8 monitors: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=brG3-yyvv9Q
Garfeild: hm...what alternative for opengl benchmark must i use?
Kano: 4 monitors: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iPO-9sf8HJ0&gl=US
Kano: i want know at least the diff for 4 monitors
Garfeild: Kano: what can i use for opengl benchmark?
Kano: anything
Kano: do you use pts?
Garfeild: nope
Kano: it is nice to use
Kano: http://phoronix-test-suite.com/
Garfeild: hm...can i use it without php?
Kano: no
Kano: it is controlled with command line
Kano: a gui will be there too for next version
Kano: what distro do you use
Garfeild: hm...specific on specific processor architecture
Kano: what do you want to compare?
Garfeild: i need to compare how full graphic library was ported to this architecture
Garfeild: i'm back)
Garfeild: so, what test can i use for my task?
Garfeild: Kano: hm...i have another problem - gcc isn't aviable on that test machine(
Garfeild: fbconfig - what is it?
Garfeild: eh
Kano: hi maligor
Garfeild: Kano: can you help me?
Garfeild: fbconfig error on i386 machine(
Kano: depends, if you use i386/amd64 i can give you my distro
Kano: if you use something else it is up to you to get a gcc
Garfeild: Gentoo on i386
Kano: gentoo without a gcc is impossible
Ivanovic: on gentoo you *always* have a gcc
Garfeild: Kano: yep))) now i'm talking about another machine)
Garfeild: i want to see, what SPECViewperf makes
Kano: then say the specs of the that one
Garfeild: so..i need to start it)
Garfeild: but i see fbconfig error
Kano: maligor: do you have got a cool opengl 3 demo running?
Garfeild: so?
Garfeild: hm...maybe my problem in my video card? in my machine it's nvidia with nv driver
Garfeild: sigh
Ivanovic: fbconfig sounds like "framebuffer config"
Ivanovic: so yeah, something grpahics related
Garfeild: so...nobody know(
cxo: michaellarabel: wine-1.1.7
cxo: sorry, never mind
bkero: Sweet. Monitor gets delivered today :D
cxo: yay, what monitor did you get?
bkero: 3007WFP-HC
bkero: Tossing it in between 2 rotated 22s
cxo: is that a 30.07" screen? with Wifii and HTPC features?
bkero: Just a 30" screen
cxo: what brand?
bkero: It's so bare, it doesn't have VGA input. Just 1 DVI input, a usb hub, and a card reader.
bkero: Dell
cxo: but doesnt dell suck balls?
bkero: It's not like they make the panel.
redeeman: they do however have lousy quality control on their monitors
cxo: probably not, but they ask for the cheap ones, like the quality of the display, really sucks
bkero: They make the controller, which seems to get good reviews. And it's an LG-Philips panel, which is also used in the HP LP3065, and the 3008WFP
redeeman: so one often has to get it replaced many times to not have a crappy one
cxo: LG sucks too
redeeman: they make the best panels
redeeman: S-IPS
bkero: It's an S-IPS panel
bkero: Also $800
cxo: i bought an LG for my sister once, and put it besides my Samsung, and it really sucked, looked bleached, as if gamma was too high, messing with the controls didnt sort it
bkero: Everybody makes a few shitty panels
redeeman: LG also makes crappy TN monitors
bkero: Some people make some good panels
bkero: This monitor is REALLY basic. No OSD, just 3 buttons. Power, and 2 brightness up, brightness down
bkero: I'm stealing a monitor calibrator from the media communications lab here
Ivanovic: has a now ancient dell 2405 and is really satisfied with it
Ivanovic: not a single problem over the by now three years i got it
bkero: Dell is much more hands-off with their monitors
Ivanovic: and a friend of mine bought the 30" about a month ago and really likes it, too
cxo: gets no
bkero: I'm doing some triple head xinerama between an 8800gt and 6800gto
cxo: wants a 30" Samsung T model (305T?)
Ivanovic: cxo: it is strange that it is said that dell displays would suck, especially since they tend to win most awards at "really critical" tests
Ivanovic: like eg prad.de
Ivanovic: sure, if you buy a display with a tn panel it is your own fault if it sucks, but with MVA/SPVA or even SIPS panels you should be fine at dell
cxo: its all relative Ivanovic, once you get used to a particular standard, everything else sucks
Ivanovic: cxo: hmm, i got to say that the guys at prad.de are *very* critical and set a high level before they hand out "very good" for a display
Ivanovic: ;)
cxo: All the dells i've seen, suck really badly. But all the dells i've seen is limited to the stuff we get at the office. I dont know anyone with a Dell monitor at home
Ivanovic: those you get at the office are most likely with the bad ass tn panels
Ivanovic: and those are crap from almost all manufacturers out there
cxo: whats a TN panel?
Ivanovic: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thin_film_transistor_liquid_crystal_display#Types
Ivanovic: the tn ones are basically the ones with the best reaction time but with the worst image quality
cxo: is LCD the same as TFT?
Ivanovic: jupp
cxo: do you know whats in my screen? Its an ancient Samsung 193T, but it has the best quality image i've ever seen to date
Ivanovic: cxo: seems to be a pva panel
Kano: michaellarabel: could you give me a hint what you call after the avg. fps is shown
michaellarabel: Kano: In regards to the smokin-guns problem?
Kano: it seems to affect the fps and not the seconds as result
Ivanovic: cxo: and if you have only seem tn panels in comparision, this will look "godlike" to you, sure
Ivanovic: though modern day s-ips panels should be an even better level
Kano: like gtkperf runs
cxo: can that V8700 bios be flashed on the hd4870?
Kano: cxo: for what purpose
Ivanovic: "can": most likely yes
Ivanovic: "will it work": not sure at all...
Kano: do you really use those apps, or only for benchmarking
Kano: michaellarabel: multimonitor support differences to consumer cards would be more interesting
cxo: Ivanovic: are apple cinema displays any good?
Kano: firegl vs radeon with 4 or more displays
Ivanovic: cxo: i think they got the same panel as the dell, not sure though
cxo: Kano: arent they the same chip? i thought it was just driver differences
Ivanovic: (i think both work with LG S-IPS panels)
Kano: cxo: thats correct, but some with many display connectors like that one specific 4850 x2 with 4 connectors seems to have got problems
Ivanovic: cxo: that is you could "just" go to some shops, several do show the 30" apple displays
cxo: gets carried away with the sales girls to actually look at products
cxo: hence i have to do research at home
Kano: http://www.sapphiretech.com/us/products/products_overview.php?gpid=265&grp=3
Ivanovic: that is my friend really likes his 30" dell
Kano: thats very interesting
Kano: for the price
Ivanovic: though he is not a professional user at all
cxo: i want a single slot cooler for my hd4870, dual slot is gay
mattmatteh: wants fanless
Kano: cxo: you know how fast this would have to run? thats no good idea at all...
Kano: michaellarabel: maybe you can get that sapphire card, pretty interesting specs
cxo: the 4870 with the asus bios is really tame, never goes above 55degC
Kano: mattmatteh: thats only possible for slow gpus or when you have got already a good case cooling, otherwise it will overheat. watercooling is an option however
mattmatteh: Kano, yeah.... sucks
Kano: if money does not matter get a water cooled gfx card
mattmatteh: Kano, i am more interested in efficiency and watts
mattmatteh: that has 2 extra plugs on it too
mattmatteh: obviously not for me :(
Kano: then highend cards are nothing for you *g*
mattmatteh: i would get a high end, but has to be efficienct. no space heater
raevol: are there fanless high end cards?
cxo: yeah, watercooled
raevol: oh, but not fanless or watercooled-less?
raevol: as in, none efficient enough to not need active cooling?
Ivanovic: highend == lots of energy usage
raevol: mm i see
raevol: rame
Ivanovic: lots of enery used == no passive (non water) cooling possible
cxo: why are PC prices so high right now?
Kano: cxo: not higher than usual
Kano: basically you get very fast cpus for 200€ already
Ivanovic: at 200€ you can get "damn fast" cpus
Ivanovic: for 40€ you get about 4gb ram
Ivanovic: graphics card are affordable at 150€
Ivanovic: harddrives below 100€ for a 1TB drive
Ivanovic: plus 80€ for a quite good mainboard and you are basically done
Ivanovic: okay, plus case, powersupply and coolers, add about 80€ and you are done
Ivanovic: this results in a really decent computer
raevol: then stick a manufacturer logo on it, how much does that cost
Ivanovic: don't forget that you will also get an oh so great windows vista with it
Ivanovic: ;)
mattmatteh: Ivanovic, thats not always true
mattmatteh: high end == energy
mattmatteh: inefficient == lots of energy
Ivanovic: mattmatteh: not always, but often
mattmatteh: i know cpus are different
mattmatteh: and gpus can do alot of number crunching
mattmatteh: like matrices
Ivanovic: yeah, and they need lots of power for doing so
mattmatteh: but.... in the end, i do not want a fan, or any other clunky cooling device
Ivanovic: then just get yourself a beagle board and be done
mattmatteh: i can hear the cpu fan now... really thinking about removing that. i want it silent
Ivanovic: this should be a perfect no noise setup
mattmatteh: Ivanovic, i have had the beagal board discussion... thats useless
Ivanovic: or you have to get *really* huge cooling blocks
Ivanovic: but you won't find a "gamers grade" modern grpahics card with passive cooling that allows to play for >3h at a time when you have no fan at all in your case
mattmatteh: i can tolerate during load....
mattmatteh: but what manufacture does taht
mattmatteh: i am not doing anything but typing now.... and i hear the cpu fan
mattmatteh: like i said i thinking about removing it
mattmatteh: if i were doing something.... then maybe
Ivanovic: what about just adding a switch and haing this on your desktop?
mattmatteh: thats work
mattmatteh: the computer should do that
mattmatteh: well... it kinda does
mattmatteh: just doesnt go off
mattmatteh: its at the lowest speed
mattmatteh: and goes high when i compile
mattmatteh: or higher, just by a little
mattmatteh: ends the "i hate fans" rant
Ivanovic: that is what i love about my thinkpad, there i can directly write into the fan control and basically "do it myself"
Ivanovic: that is i upped the limit when the fan starts by 5°C resulting in it being off most of the time
Kano: michaellarabel: did you try to run the game you bought with wine? just saw the wine hq entry for left4dead and it should run
cxo: graphics and ram is cheap, but CPUs are expensive!
Kano: cxo: so tell me what cpu is so expensive
cxo: all of mid to high end, especially Intel ones
Kano: cxo: i dont think that you need those, buy a cheaper one, get fast ram like ddr2-1066 and good cpu cooler + oc it
cxo: i want a build a 1u gaming box
Kano: no game requires a i7 965
cxo: i'm thinking something in the Core2 line
Kano: sure, E8500/E8600 is for gamers
cxo: but its expensive!, e8600 + cheapest board = $300
cxo: well after shipping and all that crap at least
Kano: then use the 8500, much cheaper
Kano: or 8400
Kano: but get ddr2-1066 ram
Kano: with a bit luck 4 ghz should be possible
cxo: but this is what i mean, cpus are expensive these days, back when AthlonX2 was the best, you could get the 4800+ for $250
Kano: depends on the definition of expensive
Kano: if you use a E5200 + oc it very much then it is cheap *g*
Kano: a E5200 beats every dual core athlon x2
mattmatteh: Ivanovic, i wonder if i can do that here. i have asus m3n78-em. just pulled out the manual, ill read it later. unless you are familiar with this, feel free to PM me.
mattmatteh: goes to find lunch
cxo: i know that, athlonx2 is 6yrs old
cxo: but thats not the point
Kano: it is still fast enough for standard use
cxo: people's champions like the e8600, and q6600, back in 2003, like the Athlon X2 4200+ were not this expensive
cxo: Intel has raised prices like crazy of the years, i'm guessing its cos AMD cant compete
Kano: only for those cpu which are faster than the amd ones
cxo: but even the best phenom gets its ass handed to it, with mid-range Intel chips
Kano: then just buy those
cxo: but its expensive!
cxo: haha
Kano: then buy a xbox or ps3
Kano: much cheaper
cxo: hmm yeah
raevol: or buy stuff from 6 months ago that's way cheaper
raevol: that's what i do
cxo: steep learning curve though for me, i havent had a console since super nintendo
Kano: ps3 is really cool hardware
Kano: and if you like you could even run linux on it *g*
Kano: replacing hd seems to be easy too
cxo: sounding better
cxo: but i guess i'm gonna play windows games, and the cell driver isnt ready yet
Kano: but which win games do not run on it which you like to play?
cxo: like take RedAlert 3, how the hell do you play that without a mouse?
Kano: you can connect usb mouse+keyboard
Kano: no problem
Kano: then you can play ut3 as usual
cxo: really? sweet
cxo: how much does a ps3 go for these days?
Kano: i is too expensive for you anyway ;)
cxo: sucks
Kano: but has blueray support too
Kano: i am still thinking about a blueray drive, but did not buy it yet. did anybody else do?
cxo: i dont think i need BD, is Sony the only people that make PS3s? Like do you get Asus PS3s or EVGA PS3s?
Kano: maybe you should drink less alk ;)
cxo: i think the money you would have to put into aftermarket coolers and high end power supplies offsets the advantage of overclocking to beat a higher stock clock cpu
Xemanth: cxo: the best phenom compared to mid range intel ? woot lol
Xemanth: what is mid range in intel chips ?
Xemanth: e8xxx series ?
Xemanth: or quad q6600, q9xxx ?
cxo: q8600, q6600, yeah
cxo: (i'm just following 3d mark vantage cpu scores)
Xemanth: does intel still sell q8600 and q6600 :)
cxo: and the q8600 is almost a full year older than the AM3 Phenom 9950
cxo: not sure if intel still does, but its quite widely available ebay, newegg, etc..
Xemanth: you mean am2+ ?
cxo: sorry, yeah, i thought that was the same thing
Xemanth: nope :)
cxo: i'm talking about the 45nm chips
Xemanth: phenom ii
Xemanth: they are am3 :)
Xemanth: i think i'm going to buy phenom ii x4 925 next summer
cxo: i'm sure there would be something much better by then
Xemanth: its 95w tdp, 6 mb l3 and 2.8 ghz
Xemanth: it would be really nice chip
Xemanth: compared to my 4850e =)
cxo: i still have an athlon x2
Xemanth: i have athlon x2 4580e 45W 2.5 ghz
Xemanth: 4850e
Xemanth: <- poor student
cxo: no, i mean the really first, 90nm chip
Xemanth: someday i'll be rich engineer =)
cxo: heh
cxo: sounds like an oxymoron
Xemanth: ah then you're speaking of athlon 64 x2 ;)
cxo: yes
Kano: do you think that 2.8 ghz vs 2.5 will change much
cxo: 4200+, A8N-SLi, 7600GS, 2GB PC3200, 4x500GB, 1x80GB, and 1x HD4870 on the shelf
Xemanth: nope
Milyardo: cxo, I'll take that 4870 :)
cxo: thats my pc, got it in 2004, was really high end
cxo: got the HD4870 in October last year, sucked balls on Linux, so i took it out
Xemanth: meh 4850e, GA-MA78GPM-DS2H 780g+sb700, integrated hd 3200, 4 gb ddr2 800 mhz, 1x 320gb and Benq G2400W 1920x1200 24" :)
Milyardo: I've got a 4830 right now
Milyardo: I don't thinks its that bad
cxo: oh i have a Samsung 193T, cost $1.2k back when i got it
Milyardo: its an improvement over my Geforce 8200 at least @.@
cxo: that was my last "PC" toy, i've moved onto bigger toys now
Milyardo: cxo: Like the Jag?
cxo: yeah, like that Jag
cxo: hence the really outdated pc
Milyardo: lol
cxo: cant wait to rebuild the front end this summer
Milyardo: I just bought a Phenom 9600 as well
Kano: Milyardo: at least you got a new "supported" card for future fglrx
Milyardo: Yeah well hopefully fgrlx won't be such a big deal much longer
cxo: fglrx never "supported" anything
Milyardo: and 3D performance on radeon or radeonhd picks up soon
Kano: Milyardo: you are the first gamer who wants to use oss driver ;)
Kano: did you ever play zero ballistics? one of my favorite games for linux (only a demo but still cool)
Milyardo: Yeah I did :)
cxo: the day fglrx becomes a driver, i'll be a millionaire porn star
Milyardo: Why wouldn
Milyardo: *why woluldn't I want an OSS driver for my graphics card
Milyardo: ?
cxo: Open Sound System?
Milyardo: lol
Kano: Milyardo: it is ok for simple tasks, maybe compiz
Kano: but even for nexuiz it costs much speed
Kano: when you compare it against fglrx
cxo: which card you got?
Kano: glsl not yet possible and such things
cxo: sucks nvidia balls on my card, http://www.x.org/wiki/RadeonFeature
Kano: cxo: i tested oss vs fglrx with x700 pro bevore it died ;)
Kano: rv410
Kano: now i have got a new one, got yesterday 3450, also pretty slow
cxo: i'll put back the HD4870 when there is at least compiz support
Kano: try to find the new alpha driver, i think it is better than the official one
cxo: fglrx? it never even booted up for me
Kano: at least you read it in the forum
Kano: maybe wrong distro ;)
cxo: possibly, but i tried ubuntu and fedora *x86_64*
Milyardo: Kano: I do have fglrx installed, only because I have a Huge LAN party I'm going to tomarrow
Kano: well my distro has best support, but the script runs with u too
Xemanth: michaellarabel: is it possible to edit comments of uploaded pts global results ? it would be nice
Xemanth: in case of typoing some comments stuff etc
Milyardo: but I do look forward to helping out the readonhd project in some way
Milyardo: now that I have an ATi cad
cxo: i regret buying ATi
Milyardo: *card
cxo: even though nvidia kills kittens and makes huge ugly cards
Milyardo: So far I don't
michaellarabel: Xemanth: Not at this time
Kano: cxo: win users love it *g*
Milyardo: cxo: I can finaly use compiz in a terminal ::D
Milyardo: errr
Milyardo: terminal with compiz
Kano: Milyardo: you can use compiz with oss driver on 4xxx?
cxo: Nvidia support is like light years ahead of ATi
Milyardo: Kano: haven't tried yet
Kano: i dont use compiz, but vdpau is what i like on nvidia
Milyardo: cxo: I'm running 9.2 and most things seem to work just like it did with the nvidia card to me
cxo: but you dont play games on wine obviously, because no games work with fglrx
Xemanth: michaellarabel: i would want to see in profile my own sent stuff
Milyardo: I don't have any HD media, I was wasn't able to try vdpau on my nvidia card
Kano: and you dont have got internet right ;)
Milyardo: *try it with some HD media that is
Milyardo: I ran some low def stuff though
Milyardo: cxo: WoW works o.o
Milyardo: that and starcraft
Milyardo: only 2 games I play in Wine
Kano: Milyardo: you can dl the blender movies and trailers
Kano: Milyardo: http://www.divx.com/en/downloads/divx-7-showcase
cxo: I play 3d games
Milyardo: I do have HL2 with steam, I haven't tried it yet
Milyardo: I think I'll do that when I do home
Xemanth: michaellarabel: btw phoronix.com, the cost of unbannered version of phoronix is too high
Milyardo: My performace with America's Army does suck though
Xemanth: michaellarabel: monthly paid stuff is too high, 20e per year should be enough
Milyardo: for some reason I'm getting about the same FPS with the 4830 as the 8200 :(
cxo: my 7600GS is 30000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 times faster than my HD4870 on Linux
bkero: Has anybody confirmed vdpau working with the unstable mplayer ebuild?
Milyardo: Well the best nvidia card I have is my 8600M GT in my laptop
Xemanth: 2d speed you mean ?
Xemanth: or 3d
Xemanth: cxo: my hd 3200 is almost perfect atm, only problem which i have atm is that sometimes when changing fullscreen -> windowed movie stops
cxo: i think i saw the bug report for that
cxo: Gallium FTW!
cxo: pops another G
Xemanth: cxo: did you ?
cxo: G'd out
