michaellarabel2: Ivanovic
Ivanovic: jupp
Ivanovic: michaellarabel2: what can i do you for?
michaellarabel2: Ivanovic: You are correct, AMD will be updating its legacy driver quarterly.
Ivanovic: for linux, too?
Ivanovic: then the choice IMO is really okay to drop support from the one released on a monthly basis
Ivanovic: as in "updating to support new kernels and xorg versions" is meant
Ivanovic: ;)
Ivanovic: michaellarabel2: you got the stuff i posted in a query to michaellarabel about 30mins ago?
michaellarabel2: Ivanovic: No I didn't
michaellarabel2: Ivanovic: No, not for Linux
michaellarabel2: In a meeting again all day, but was just contacted by AMD just now about the Windows quarterly support
Ivanovic: ah, okay
Ivanovic: just posted some comments about the powerusage article
Ivanovic: uhm, in your article about power consumptions the graphics are *bad*
Ivanovic: they do not state explicitly which one is for what and there is no "time" bar...
Ivanovic: (time bar as in "one of those two axis had no values attached to it, so you have no idea about the scale")
Ivanovic: lovely, so for windows they continue supporting the old hardware, in linux it is effectivly gone from the blob and will be "open source only"
Ivanovic: has ubuntu planned to use xorg-server for 9.04?
Ivanovic: this might get interesting...
Ivanovic: ^^
michaellarabel2: X Server 1.6 is in Ubuntu 9.04
Ivanovic: okay, then there will be *many* rants about the speed in 3d apps with ati cards
michaellarabel2: Yep...
redeeman: it seems like a rather sane choice to me
redeeman: unlike many of ATIs brilliant ideas
Ivanovic: redeeman: it is a sane choice to drop the support from the driver activly improved
Ivanovic: since no improvements will take place for this hardware anyway
Ivanovic: not updating the blob to support a "just released" xorg server on the other hand is, hmm, problematic
Ivanovic: (the legacy blob that is)
Ivanovic: in general i think it is a good idea to make users move to the open driver(s)
Ivanovic: though it *might* have been a better idea to wait till gallium 3d and thus "some speed" is available in a released version
Ivanovic: of mesa and drm that is
Ivanovic: at least till this is the case i would prefer an update every 6 month (or something like this) just to make it possible to use the driver with the latest released xorg-server and latest released kernel
Ivanovic: i am off for some hours, cu
raevol: that post about UT3 is hugely misleading
raevol: it should be titled "New Cedega released, doesn't suck quite as much as it used to"
maligor: how about: "I think I'll use wine instead"
mattmatteh: waits for native versions
maligor: heh, yes, I don't use wine for anything
maligor: or cedega for that matter
redeeman: mattmatteh: you'll probably be waiting for a while
maligor: redeeman, how long do you figure?
redeeman: you should probably expect ballmer to stick a vista dvd up his ass on MTV first
maligor: damn lock button
raevol: i'll wait for native or virtualbox d3d support
mattmatteh: redeeman, yup. i dont play many games
monreal: raevol: that's not the first missleading post title abou UT3 on phoronix :/
mattmatteh: redeeman, so the windows only crap doesnt bother me. but i will not use windows or wine to play
mattmatteh: i would really like gta4 for linux :-D
maligor: I'd really like Supreme Commander and Empire: Total War, gta4 is crap ;)
mattmatteh: maligor, what is wrong with gta4 ?
mattmatteh: good think i didnt go out and get a ps3 to play it :P
maligor: it sort of lost touch
raevol: monreal: it seems like they're trying to incite people to complain about the UT3 delay, which i support, but it's the wrong way to go about it
Deanjo: michaellarabel, you around?
Deanjo: http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?p=65615#post65615
michaellarabel: To anyone on the list, does http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=amd_r500_power&num=1 the top horizontal ad at the top display.
Deanjo: They also updated the 71.xx series driver michaellarabel
michaellarabel: Okay. Will have an article up soon. BTW, at Phoronix.com are the 728 x 90 horizontal ads at the top loading for you?
Deanjo: Ya they are michaellarabel
michaellarabel: K good. Thanks Deanjo.
michaellarabel: IDG still driving me nuts and the top leaderboard ad I haven't seen appear most of the day myself.
Deanjo: browser/flash bug perhaps?
Deanjo: I use the 64-bit plugin so maybe it's a wrapper issue
mattmatteh: michaellarabel, i dont see any ads. i do not ( and will not) have any java or flash. i am not objecting to ads exactly ( so long as they are not the annoying kind) perhaps something is needed for those without java or flash
