Phoronix IRC Log: 2009-03-02
michaellarabel: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=NzEwNg
Kano: hi michaellarabel , when you press on more info, you everytime get a new window, maybe only show one window, and when this is still visable close it
Kano: also it still does not return to gui
Kano: when i try to run 7zip, it shows correct average but does nothing then
Kano: then i look what it did
Kano: then you see in test results a file showing zip compression, but then NEXUIZ?!
michaellarabel: What?
Kano: i guess it used an old pic
michaellarabel: Where did it show Nexuiz?
Kano: in the xml
Kano: there was no working index.html
Kano: i thought you wanted to fix that issue that it stops after running one test via gui?
Kano: maybe i pressed too fast ctrl-c and it used a cashed pic, but why does it break at all?
mattmatteh: does phoronix do any reviews on sane power supplies ? like 300 watt, maybe a little less or a little more ?
mattmatteh: doesnt get why someone would use 600 watts for a computer....
michaellarabel: mattmatteh: No, because manufacturers don't send out low-wattage PSUs for review
mattmatteh: michaellarabel, thats sad
mattmatteh: michaellarabel i had a hard time finding a review for my 300 watt to go with my 4850e
mattmatteh: nice that power efficient cpus are comming around (fanless would be nice), but good luck on plugging it in
mattmatteh: michaellarabel, guess that makes sense though... thanks
redeeman: well
redeeman: it's not like it really matters if you use a psu that has larger capacity
mattmatteh: redeeman, huh ?
mattmatteh: redeeman, sure it will work
mattmatteh: but then there is no point in the power efficiency
redeeman: erhm
redeeman: using a 100000 watt psu wouldn't make your computer use more
mattmatteh: since the power supply would consume any cpu savings
maligor: redeeman, actually it would
redeeman: maligor: not really
maligor: ideally it wouldn't
redeeman: efficiency is almost the same across the entire load
redeeman: very small difference
redeeman: and as i recall
mattmatteh: waits for that review
redeeman: it's most efficient at the low load end
mattmatteh: .... wait... there are none
mattmatteh: who knows
redeeman: according to corsair, their psus are max efficient at 50% load
maligor: redeeman, reference?
redeeman: http://www.corsair.com/_images/charts/vx450w_efficiency.jpg
mattmatteh: redeeman, there are a few reviews over at tomshardware ( think i found a few more)
maligor: oh.. yeah, that's probably true
redeeman: but it depends on the smps design too
redeeman: in short: don't care
maligor: but you said 100000 watt psu
maligor: 100kW
redeeman: yes
mattmatteh: is lost....
mattmatteh: is happy with his sane 300 watt power supply
redeeman: mattmatteh: to put it simple, the watt rating on a psu is just the max it CAN deliver - it actually only uses that if your motherboard+cpu etc consumes it
maligor: plus the overhead
maligor: which is <20% on recent 80plus supplies
mattmatteh: redeeman, i never doubted that. but if a power supply is 80 % efficient, then 20 % is always blown out the back as heat.
mattmatteh: but i have read that the low end is not 80 % efficient
mattmatteh: it drops off
mattmatteh: quickly
redeeman: that 20% is still just 20% of the DRAW
mattmatteh: its the drop ioff
mattmatteh: non linear
redeeman: so it would be 20% of 150watt usage whether your psu is 300 watt or 1000 watt
maligor: the corsair load charts look sucky tho
maligor: why do they only have 3 measurement points
mattmatteh: but as i was hinting to michaellarabel , a review on efficient and low power reviews to go with a 4850e would be nice
redeeman: maligor: ofcourse we don't know if they are actually sane or not, but if it were ME that had done them, i'd say the three points are just to mark which is of interrest, and then ofcourse that the extrapolated data is somewhat accurate
redeeman: but from what i know of switchmode supplies, this data doesn't surprise me
redeeman: what i however do find interresting is that the US sucky 115v stinks compared to the superior 230v :P
mattmatteh: the lower voltage is less efficient ?
redeeman: according to corsair, yes
mattmatteh: i thought i read that somewhere too, maybe the same place :P
mattmatteh: but its been a while since i did all my research on a new computer
mattmatteh: so i dont remember the details
maligor: they also have 60Hz I think
maligor: vs 50Hz on 230v system
redeeman: sometimes higher frequency can be desirable though
maligor: yes, like when you cant to synchronize it to a tv system
maligor: but that's a bit useless now ;)
mattmatteh: the US likes to hold to ancient technologies for ever..... the tv wont be going anywhere :P
mattmatteh: jk
mattmatteh: :P
maligor: got to love the digital systems, you can just dd if=/dev/dvb/device of=tvcapture.ts
maligor: not hugely practical since you need to setup the tuner tho
mattmatteh: michaellarabel, i posted in the forums about using theora video instead of proprietary flash for the reviews. all i got was a reply from a spambot. is it possible to use open video codecs on a web site that supports open source ?
redeeman: or atleast just post a link to the video file?!
maligor: silverlight!
michaellarabel: mattmatteh: When the video tag with Ogg support is widely supported, yes.
maligor: none of this evil adobe
mattmatteh: redeeman, thats what i was asking... a link to download
maligor: flash video is very sucky in linux too
redeeman: michaellarabel: why is that required? why not simply do the ugly way of embedding? or providing a link?
mattmatteh: michaellarabel, chicken or the egg. smoke or fire... which came first. seems everyone says that.
michaellarabel: redeeman: To keep visitors on the page, need the ad revenue.
mattmatteh: thinks phoronix could be first, instead of after everyone else
redeeman: michaellarabel: why do you think people would just leave after grabbing video?
mattmatteh: doesnt have flash, and has no intention of installing it
michaellarabel: redeeman: Not saying they would leave, but embedded into the page would ensure that at least they stay longer.
mattmatteh: michaellarabel, and ogg theora aside, how about a video link to mpeg2 ?
maligor: or make it a option to phoronix premium :)
redeeman: michaellarabel: well also consider this - some people might refrain from going "phoronix premium" because of the lacking video
mattmatteh: i wonder if i am missing anything... i have yet to see any of the videos from the reviews
redeeman: and some of those people(all?) probably have adblock
mattmatteh: since they are require proprietary flash :(
redeeman: mattmatteh: i haven't seen them either, it requires crappy crap :)
redeeman: mattmatteh: it is good to finally see another sane person not willing to install such crap
mattmatteh: doesnt waste his time add block ( all adds use flash)
maligor: swfdec and gnash play video flash okeyish
maligor: they're just both unstable
mattmatteh: redeeman, with an open license, something i can compile, i would consider it
maligor: swfdec less so tho
redeeman: unacceptable, flash itself is a piece of garbage
redeeman: it's vermon
mattmatteh: redeeman, but...... since flash is mostly used for adds, and not much more... there is no point now
redeeman: a pest to eradicate
mattmatteh: redeeman, the main reason i dont have that, is i listen to music while i compute. if the volume is up, i dont want the webpage blasting advertisements
redeeman: i see
redeeman: not so sane after all then :P
mattmatteh: so.... even if i liked flash.. buh bye
mattmatteh: music has priority
maligor: mattmatteh, most ads don't have audio (by default)
maligor: infact it's incredibly rare
mattmatteh: maligor, 1 is too many
maligor: I just don't like flash ads because they waste my cpu
mattmatteh: the fact that it can do that with out warning.... is enough that i dont want it
maligor: animated images should be enough
mattmatteh: maligor, oh that too. i keep forgetting all my reasons since i dont have it
mattmatteh: maligor, before my 4850e, i was using a pentium3 @ 797 mhz
redeeman: hah it's not rare
mattmatteh: there was now way i would waste any of it
redeeman: theres plenty of them that has audio
mattmatteh: anyway.....
maligor: redeeman, I must miss them
maligor: the ones with audio that I've seen were movie ads, and they were muted by default
mattmatteh: i would hope phoronix can be a leader, use theora or at least an mpeg, and have a download link
redeeman: the adobe crap flash player can also fork itself out of firefox somehow
redeeman: it happened to a guy i know
mattmatteh: a simple wget phoronix.com/
maligor: redeeman, did it evolve into a new life form and escape to the net?
redeeman: maligor: no, it just kept doing audio whilst firefox was closed
redeeman: for a few days
maligor: uh
mattmatteh: is forum user 044Andy a spambot ?
maligor: why didn't he kill it?
mattmatteh: who is a forum moderator ?
redeeman: maligor: his audio output was shut off, and he just discovered it when he connected it, and there was audio he had no clue what was
redeeman: investigation revealed it was flash that had somehow managed to break out of firefox
mattmatteh: redeeman, does that guy still use flash ?
redeeman: after that little incident, he realized it was probably a good time to purge it :P
mattmatteh: i still dont see the excitement with flash
mattmatteh: even youtube, the resolution is soo poor
mattmatteh: pointless
redeeman: it's an abomination
mattmatteh: its evil
redeeman: oh well - i guess i should connect the DG43NB
mattmatteh: does not know what that is
redeeman: intel desktop board
mattmatteh: hates intel
redeeman: why?
mattmatteh: redeeman, they make crappy cpu's ?
redeeman: lol
mattmatteh: redeeman, and microsoft married them
mattmatteh: redeeman, i am a risc fan
redeeman: intel uses a risc architecture internally
mattmatteh: redeeman, throw more instructions, require a bigger fan ?
redeeman: with elaborate firmware to expose x86
mattmatteh: redeeman, yeah, i heard that
mattmatteh: redeeman, intel is nothing special, just another monopoly
redeeman: except their stuff tend to work
mattmatteh: redeeman, compared to ?
redeeman: AMD
redeeman: such as... intel graphics
redeeman: intel chipsets
mattmatteh: redeeman, thats a result of the monopoly
redeeman: not really
redeeman: in fact quite the contrary
mattmatteh: they have the cash flow
redeeman: a monopoly can easier ignore small pieces of the market
mattmatteh: i dont follow what you are saying
mattmatteh: but.. dont need to
redeeman: intel is making proper linux drivers
mattmatteh: unless you want to explain
redeeman: the fact that they are big only makes them able to easier ignore linux if they wanted
mattmatteh: thats the only thing i like about intel
redeeman: since they get so much money anyway
mattmatteh: i have read up on that
mattmatteh: but... at the end of the day, its still an in efficient crappy x86
mattmatteh: has 2 ibooks, and hopes to have an arm computer soon
maligor: I have 3 arm computers
mattmatteh: was happy with apple before the married intel. openfirmware and powerpc
maligor: 2 of them are headless and the last one is my cellphone
mattmatteh: maligor, what arm computers do you have ?
maligor: oh wait..
maligor: 4 arm computers :P
maligor: the fourth is EOS 40D
mattmatteh: i wanted something for a small desktop
mattmatteh: there are a few that might work
maligor: the arm stand at some fair had a mini desktop
mattmatteh: really
mattmatteh: thinks he wants one
maligor: I think it was some video feed from ces 2009
mattmatteh: anyway....
mattmatteh: waits for the day x86 is dead :)
bkero: oh please be soon
mattmatteh: mips is dead... powerpc is dying... /me has hopes for arm ?
bkero: PPC is still pretty strong
bkero: Not on the desktop, but certainly in the living room, and the datacentre.
mattmatteh: wants it on his desktop
mattmatteh: wants it everwhere
bkero: has it on his desktop, it's great.
mattmatteh: has 2 ibooks
mattmatteh: bkero, what do you have ?
bkero: An iBook, an EFIKA, a G4 Sawtooth, and a G5 Tower.
Ivanovic: ppc is basically in all current gaming consoles (wii, xbox360 and ps3(though in this one it is called "cell")
bkero: That's why I said the living room.
mattmatteh: bkero, i am still thinking about getting an efika
mattmatteh: i think there are a few left still
bkero: Heh
bkero: Not worth it, with things like the beagleboard on the market.
mattmatteh: what graphics card does yours have >
mattmatteh: ?
bkero: Radeon 9200
mattmatteh: beagalboard is useless
mattmatteh: bkero, that fan or fanless ?
bkero: Fanless
mattmatteh: and how well does it play movies ?
bkero: How is a beagleboard useless? The proprietary gpu 3d package?
bkero: The damn efikaa can't output sound and use the network at the same time.
mattmatteh: bkero, didnt know there was something proprietary about it. that make is reall bad
bkero: I tried running mpd with nfs rooted music, and the damn thing skipped continuously.
mattmatteh: bkero, useless.... partial hdmi functionality. no digital audio out. no ether ethernet
maligor: is there a embedded 3d core with opensource driver?
bkero: No 3d with open source driver
bkero: It's poulsbo
maligor: you mean powervg sgx
bkero: Well, it's a PowerVR SGX 330, a revision before the version used in poulsbo
mattmatteh: wonders what he could do with a beagalboard missing those key features
bkero: mattmatteh: I'm building a wearable computer with HUD with one.
bkero: Stock they use less than 1 watt, and under full load I haven't been able to get it to draw more than 2 watts.
mattmatteh: bkero, thats whats nice
mattmatteh: bkero, your project seems neat. wireless would be nice
mattmatteh: i know there is usb, but that adds parts, cost
mattmatteh: size
maligor: and a direct neural interface would be nice too
bkero: Has blueooth and 802.11g. I'm trying to secure a pair of HDMI/DVI compatible glasses.
mattmatteh: like i said, if it had ethernet, and digital audio, i probably would have one
mattmatteh: bkero, it does have onboard wireless?
bkero: ethernet or digital audio would make the board bigger than 3"x3"
bkero: mattmatteh: No, for that I'm using an sdio card.
mattmatteh: bkero, i thought integrated ethernet and audio was tiny enough ?
bkero: Although I plan on making a usb module brick that includes offboard power, bluetooth, 802.11g, hsdpa, and a webcam.
bkero: There really isn't that much spare room on the PCB :(
bkero: Going to see if I can find a tiny webcam to mount on the glasses, so I can have some sweet HUD real-time OCR
mattmatteh: bkero, well, i would like something as a desktop
mattmatteh: steps away
maligor: bkero, then you can live the rest of your life with no natural light ever touching your eyes again!
bkero: ?
bkero: The glasses have transmissive panels
mattmatteh: bkero, i am back, re reading what you said about efika. sound does not work when using the network ?
bkero: mattmatteh: They both use some of the same hardware, which means when you saturdate one(with nfs transferring mp3s), it can't do another
