Phoronix IRC Log: 2009-02-22
Wyatt: So I saw a good price and jumped on an HD2400. Now, I'm trying to figure out what driver would be best, and freedesktop.org seems to be sort of...out of date?
Wyatt: I'm running radeonhd right now and it mentions in the xorg.n.log that dri was disabled at compile time, so I'm not sure how well the R600-series is actually supported right now.
Wyatt: So between using radeon, using the radeonhd I've got (1.2.4), and installing either of the two from git, which do you guys think would work best?
Wyatt: The most stressful thing I can see myself doing for the time being is a bit of 720p video, so I'm pretty sure one of these can probably manage.
Wyatt: I'd like to avoid fglrx, if possible, because the past has shown me that it tends to be bad at cleaning up after itself and coexisting with other options.
Wyatt: (Unless this has changed recently?)
monreal: what a mess... I really hope the ati driver situation will be more clear in the future
Wyatt: Eh, could be worse.
Wyatt: They could be VIA. ;)
Wyatt: But I think that It's a bit problematic that the easily-findable public documentation hasn't kept abreast of the actual state of things.
monreal: it should all "just work"
Wyatt: Would be nice, but by all accounts things aren't buried in roses over in Windows-land either.
XaeroOne: hi
XaeroOne: I was wondering if any of you have see a comparision of gentoo vs windows anywhere
XaeroOne: I see a lot of vista/XP or ubuntu/fedora/debian comparisions
XaeroOne: nothing between linux and windows, specially gentoo
Wyatt: XaeroOne: Well, I hate to be the one to break it to you, but there's really not much of a demand for such a thing.
Wyatt: If you're wanting to know about performance, finding numbers comparing Gentoo to other distros and extrapolating from there will be your best bet, IMO.
XaeroOne: well I would have done it myself but install gentoo "properly" is not something I would be able to do, just about learing to setup debian at the moment :-)
Wyatt: These things will come in time.
XaeroOne: but I just wanted to know because there are so many linux distros that advertise the optimizing part
XaeroOne: or being light weight or fast
monreal: hehe, some more UT3 "no news"... wtf, the game is not even sold anymore in my webshop of choice, way to go, epic
Wyatt: Ahh. From what I gather (and I don't imagine this has changed recently), "building from source and omptimising for your architecture doesn't yield appreciable benefits to the end user" or something like that.
XaeroOne: I would more or less agree
Wyatt: Though I've never particularly cared about that anyway; I'm there more for the BSD trappings and community.
Wyatt: XaeroOne: Were you looking for any statistic in particular?
XaeroOne: I don't need any precise stats but would like to know if it is worth going through all the trouble of learning to use and installing and maintaining gentoo for the performance advantage :-)
XaeroOne: any kind of benchmark would do
Wyatt: Well it's not particularly "hard" to install. If you know how to work in the terminal a little, you can install it even from the minimal disk
Wyatt: There's also http://tinyurl.com/bvedbc
Wyatt: Oh, and http://agaffney.org/quickstart.php seems pretty simple too.
Wyatt: Say....does anyone here have interest in or strong opinions on filesystem design?
Wyatt: lol, fine, #wyatt
``sol: w00t
Wyatt: Whoops, wrong channel...
rainbyte: hi
Kano: michaellarabel: could you fix your bot that adds links to your forum? you always forget the &,so those links are useless
Kano: manually adding a fixed link works.
Kano: michaellarabel: http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15579
Kano: your browser is so bad that you only see 5 log entries... so you need something with more results
michaellarabel: Kano: vBulletin seems to be the thing messing it up
Kano: but it worked long time
michaellarabel: I know, I think it changed in vBulletin 3.6.0
Kano: then you only have got check what is sent to it
michaellarabel: err 3.8.0
Kano: when you manually post it
Kano: whats the problem
michaellarabel: its all automatically done using vBulletin's RSS reader
Kano: then bug em
Kano: that the & are removed
Kano: did you add the global lang override?
