Phoronix IRC Log: 2009-02-13

rainbyte: hi
Ivanovic: so open source product of the year 2008 awards by linuxquestions.org are completed
Ivanovic: that is: of course wesnoth came in at the first position for games
Ivanovic: :)
Ivanovic: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/2008-linuxquestions.org-members-choice-awards-83/open-source-game-of-the-year-695660/
Ivanovic: all winner: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-news-59/2008-linuxquestions.org-members-choice-award-winners-704226/
maligor: wesnoth is definitely deserving
maligor: but isn't it a bit older than 2008? :P
maligor: and bzflag is practically ancient
Ivanovic: maligor: we had a stable release in 2008, too
Ivanovic: ;)
maligor: oh, you're a devel?
Ivanovic: that is: commercal games would probably have called this something like "wesnoth 3" or something like this
Ivanovic: uhm, yeah
maligor: heh, why the uhm? did you assume wesnoth implies you're universally famous? :P
Ivanovic: of course!
Ivanovic: ;)
maligor: fantastic game tho, I like the way it's infernally difficult sometimes
Ivanovic: is looking forward to getting his pandora so that he can play wesnoth when waiting at the train station...
maligor: heh, same here
maligor: the great question of number in line!
maligor: if it's the plain black plastic they've displayed in the renders, I'll probably go and paint the logo on the back with silver paint
Ivanovic: i don't think too much about how it will look at the end
Ivanovic: first i want to hold it in my hands, then i will decide on what to do about it...
Ivanovic: michaellarabel: a short news post that you will most likely be able to improve audio for the fosdem recordings via some audacity work (which just needs severel more days) might be a good thing to do
Ivanovic: that is phoronix users know that something "better" should be available soon/eventually
bkero: Ivanovic: Have pandora's been released yet?
Ivanovic: bkero: no
maligor: bkero, no
bkero: I didn't think so :(
maligor: Ivanovic, damn you.. now I'm totally tempted to play wesnoth a bit
bkero: I hear it shares a lot of hardware with a beagleboard :)
maligor: and it never stays 'a bit'
maligor: bkero, well, it shares the cpu
maligor: and it's a SoC
maligor: don't think it shares much else
bkero: Also the framebuffer I thought
maligor: that's in the SoC
Ivanovic: maligor: you are not alone with this addiction
Ivanovic: thinks back about how many swears we got from debian and kde guys...
maligor: heh
maligor: it's as good a time sink as civilization
bkero: Pretty sure it uses the same LVDS output chip that the beagle does
maligor: mm.. beagle has dvi, not lvds
maligor: I wouldn't be surprised if the SoC did LVDS directly
maligor: it integrates the whole 2d/3d chip in it
Ivanovic: bkero: pandora has some better parts than the beagle board
Ivanovic: the 256mb ram and 512mb flash for example
maligor: and wifi integrated
bkero: dvi is lvds :/
maligor: no, it's not
bkero: LVDS just stands for low voltage differential signaling
maligor: well.. yes, I suppose it is
maligor: but pandora doesn't use dvi
bkero: The beagle also doesn't have 256m yet, that's coming in the c2 revisions, which is out in march
maligor: dvi wouldn't make sense anyway
bkero: I'm sure it's like all other laptops, which use crazy-specific lvds ribbon cables
maligor: don't forget cellphones
maligor: pandora will undoubtedly use whatever the display uses
maligor: since they're not using custom made displays :P
bkero: Cell phones have the lcd soldered on the board half the time
bkero: Otherwise crazy specific lvds ribbons :P
maligor: the same display is on some archos model
bkero: Dell has started putting an entire Cortex-A9 computer in one of their laptop lines. It's for instant-on linux. They claim 2 days of battery life.
bkero: I really want to get my hands on one
maligor: didn't know Cortex-A9 was out
maligor: dell must've gotten some first class delivery
bkero: Didn't think A8's scaled to 1ghz
susikala: the pandora's really going to kick arse
maligor: they do
bkero: I suppose it does
susikala: if it ever comes out XD
maligor: susikala, oh it will
bkero: I want a laptop with 2 day battery life :(
susikala: a friend of mine paid already in nov., it keeps getting delayed
maligor: they were just overly optimistic, heh
maligor: susikala, I payed it on original too
susikala: basically, to have €250 lying half a year a pseudo trustfund isn't the best feeling in the world
susikala: in a*
maligor: really?
susikala: , he says XD
maligor: I think they were overly optimistic about the date
bkero: Mmm, looks like A9's are out of order.
maligor: first time in manufacturing
susikala: but it paid off, apparently. through the rising dollar course it now costs €300
maligor: heh
maligor: they also switched to the new chips that have 256MB ram
susikala: yep
bkero: It would be nice if the SGX had an open gl spec
bkero: It's a binary blob :/
susikala: the second batch's going to be assembled in india, it seems
susikala: I might buy me one XD
maligor: bkero, yeah, it's a shame
maligor: bkero, I won't mind it that much as long as it works
bkero: Hopefully intel does something on it
bkero: The beagle and Atom Poulsbo chipset both use the SGX
maligor: but I'll probably run it though mr. disassembler
maligor: once my other projects calm down anyway
maligor: I hope they don't scrap all symbols
maligor: or scramble them (like nvidia)
bkero: Whee!!!
bkero: I got a new wireless card, which means I can ditch the shitty proprietary broadcom blob.
