Phoronix IRC Log: 2009-02-12

rainbyte: hi
rainbyte: sorry, I'm having problems to make phoronix-test-suite run
rainbyte: I tried to lists the different tests, suites, etc
rainbyte: but nothing is displayed
redeeman: lol im doing benchmarks on this avr32 now
michaellarabel: Deanjo: How has your hand been?
Ivanovic: michaellarabel: newsworthy? http://airlied.livejournal.com/65755.html
michaellarabel: Ivanovic: Yep, was working on it right now actually
Ivanovic: :)
Ivanovic: and the hugs amount of xv changes in the r6xx/r7xx branches looks interesting, too
Ivanovic: michaellarabel: so to test r6xx stuff on my box (xv acceleration and such) what should i really need?
Ivanovic: that is: get xf86-video-ati / xf86-video-radeonhd from the r6xx/r7xx branch
Ivanovic: get mesa/drm from the r6xx/r7xx branch
Ivanovic: what version of "plain" mesa do i need?
Ivanovic: other requirements?
michaellarabel: Ivanovic: Mesa isn't needed at this time
Ivanovic: but mesa/drm is, right?
michaellarabel: yes
Ivanovic: and it should work nicely with xorg-server 1.5.x?
Ivanovic: then i will probably try it the next days...
susikala: Ivanovic: both radeon and radeonhd work nicely for me with the latest xserver
Ivanovic: susikala: including drm for r6xx+ cards?
Ivanovic: that is: what card do you have?
susikala: yeah. I'm using hd3200
susikala: that's r6xx
Ivanovic: nice
Ivanovic: susikala: which radeonhd ebuild are you using?
susikala: I compiled it myself, and I'm on ubuntu
Ivanovic: at least in the x11 overlay there is none and i don't remember where i got mine from
Ivanovic: ah, okay
susikala: shouldn't make a difference though
michaellarabel: Ivanovic: Yeah, X Server 1.5.x is alright
susikala: ah, sorry. hd3200 is rs780, apparently
michaellarabel: phoronix-test-suite will hopefully hit Jaunty's universe any day now.
susikala: michaellarabel: do you think ubuntu's decision not to release jaunty with 2.6.29 will mean they won't introduce it into the repositories until jaunty it out?
susikala: is*
susikala: which could be kind of annoying if you don't won't to compile it, since the kernel will be out before the release
susikala: I remember them introducing 2.6.28 at rc-2 or -3
michaellarabel: It won't be in until 9.10 repositories
susikala: I wonder why they can't put it in and have linux-image continue to depend on 28...
susikala: oh well :/
bkero: lol ubuntu
rainbyte: hi
Kano: redeeman: did you try 180.29? seems to be a very good release
Ivanovic: okay, the experiment with r6xx acceleration support did not go well on my end
Ivanovic: looks like i screwed my system bad enough that it does not even want to start with plain xf86-video-ati and -radeonhd without acceleration
Ivanovic: that is: the Xorg.0.log does not look this bad, or do you see any obvious errors? http://rafb.net/p/Ec59rV40.html
Ivanovic: errors that should lead to a completely disorted screen
susikala: Ivanovic: could you paste your xorg.conf?
Ivanovic: this is what i used for this experiment: http://rafb.net/p/MNvgeQ25.html
Ivanovic: yes, i know that it is *really* ugly by now since it grew over ages
Ivanovic: in this try i had attached my dell display to one of the dvi ports and an dvi->hdmi adapter at the other port, the tv not attached to the cable
Ivanovic: the same error wether the tv is attached or not
susikala: did you try with a fresh generic xorg?
Ivanovic: no
Ivanovic: since i wanted to start recording some tv and needed my xorg to be started for this
Ivanovic: might give it some more testing tomorrow and yeah, i should cleanup my xorg.conf, i know...
mib_f47zew: Heh
mib_f47zew: michaellarabel: 4670DDR4 article
mib_f47zew: In the benchmarks
michaellarabel: The mislabel? Yes, I know.
mib_f47zew: It is stated to be a 4870 instead of a 4670
mib_f47zew: Ok okok
mib_f47zew: :P
michaellarabel: Yeah, its stated on page 3.
mib_f47zew: I missed it
michaellarabel: I had been out of the office for like a week and a half, but now that I am back I am trying to find the results file to change the name.
mib_f47zew: Cool cool
mib_f47zew: Thought I'd point it out ;)
michaellarabel: Thanks
maccam94: michaellarabel: in the amd shanghai opensolaris vs. ubuntu article, ubuntu 9.04 won 10/19 tests, not 9: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=amd_shanghai_opensolaris&num=8
maccam94: you originally counted a sunflow test as a win for opensolaris, then fixed that error but didn't fix the count of ubuntu 9.04 wins on the last page
mib_f47zew: Good observation sir
mib_f47zew: You will be awared a free toy with the purchase of a happy meal at McDonald's :P
maccam94: yayyyyyyyyyyyy
maccam94: hey wait....
maccam94: :-P
Milyardo: I think .29 finaly fixed that compisited VTE bug! \o/
Milyardo: hooray for nvidia
Milyardo: *composited
redeeman: when they think the hardlock stability issues, ill hooray
Milyardo: I've seen *less* crashing its not gone though
rainbyte: hi
