raevol: is excited about the open source ati driver getting 3d support
mha: I'm not.
raevol: why not?
mha: 100 bucks the propiatary driver will work a lot better / stable / supported for the nearest 2 years to come.
mha: :D
raevol: i'm guessing the team working on the open source driver will be a lot larger though? being that it's open source?
mha: perhaps.
mha: then again it's voulantary work. ati hire coders to do professional work.
mha: while people can just stop caring companies keep paying :)
raevol: yea, and i don't think they have enough to get the job done, hence how their proprietary drivers have always been seen as sub-par
mha: agreed that the quality has been flawed. but I think that the open source effort will take time to even get where they are
raevol: of course
raevol: but how long have the specs been released? and 3d is already on its way? seems like the people working on it are getting places
mha: sure. but getting a first implementation working to actually get good performance and compatability. and most of all stability.
raevol: agreed :) but i'm still excited ;)
mha: anyhow. the reason i'm not excited is because I don't own an ATi gfx to begin with :-)
raevol: well that's silly :P
mha: and because I think that way too many people think it's a great effort single mindedly because it's open source
mha: not because of what it can actually d
mha: do*
mha: so it's always fun to confront people there
raevol: heh
mha: I use plenty of closed source components because some of them work better.
raevol: i guess the idealism of open source is something you agree with or don't
mha: I ignore license in favor of functionality
mha: most of the time atleast.
raevol: yea, and i mean i use proprietary drivers and such too, but when the open stuff is just as good i go with that
raevol: plus it'll be nice to have a decent driver bundled with distributions, instead of having to jerry-rig it post instal
raevol: being an nvidia user you must be able to appreciate that :)
bkero: Ugh
bkero: nvidia refuses to put out ppc drivers, so that's not even an option for me.
