Phoronix IRC Log: 2009-01-21
dockane: hi all. nice reviews. good work. thx
michaellarabel: Thanks dockane
dockane: i am currently trying to search the forum "GA-EP45-DQ6" but the forced delay between queries is really awfull (btw: could not get over any captcha after 3 tries)
dockane: ah.. done. no matches *puh* :)
michaellarabel: dockane: Just changed that to 20 seconds instead of 45. Been meaning to change it.
dockane: i am looking for a 755 socket mainboard with a minimum of 10 sata ports and a pci express 4x lane slot. (should detach an msi board in a fileserver running ubuntu server)
dockane: the http://www.gigabyte.de/Products/Motherboard/Products_Overview.aspx?ProductID=2748 looks suitable but i do not get any information about linux compatibily (btw: the 4 gbit lan ports is unique istn it?)
dockane: *compatibility
dockane: sorry for my poor english

Kano: michaellarabel: on your website for pts you dont write anything about the extra depends for php or swf
michaellarabel: because they are optional
maligor: isn't today the fated day of new catalyst statistically
Kano: michaellarabel: then add a sentence that this is optional
Kano: more easy to remember ;)
michaellarabel: True, will add.
Kano: btw. next time you should call your beta ver~bX
Kano: not verxX
Kano: because in that case the beta is newer than the final
Kano: for a deb
Kano: now you downgrade
kronos003: i found phoronix site while researching HDMI
kronos003: whats the word on that - ive seen a few laptops with hdmi ports and am wonder should i preferr ati or nvidia or should i avoid hdmi altogether - i have an hdtv monitor that ONLY has hdmi ports - would be nice to simplify
mattmatteh: kronos003, i would go with hdmi
mattmatteh: kronos003, read up on the gpu thats in it, does it work at all with hdmi
mattmatteh: like for pcie cards
Kano: kronos003: for use with h264 i would of course go with nvidia to use vdpau for playback
Kano: nvidia 8
Kano: or 9
kronos003: i see
mattmatteh: didnt think h265 worked on nvida yet
kronos003: im going to try to stay below 1000USD
kronos003: in not a fan of HP but i think i saw one with a core2 duo T5800 and an nvidia chip of some kind
kronos003: just out of curiosity what laptop mfgr do you guys like best?
kronos003: hmm is vdpau binary only or is it opensource
Kano: mattmatteh: new enough card to try?
mattmatteh: Kano, i have nvidia 8200 now, i dont think it does h264
Kano: sure it does
Kano: if you are lucky even vc1
mattmatteh: Kano, the ati card i had, i think that did it. but had that video tearing
Kano: you need to disable composite
Kano: then there is no tearing with vdpau
kronos003: i have an ati chip in my current machine - you guys dont seem to be fans of ati
Kano: not really ;)
Kano: i write scripts for ati too, but compared to nvidia it is much more time consuming and more buggy
kronos003: i see
Kano: mattmatteh: h264 was not acc with linux + ati, only win
mattmatteh: Kano, hmm
mattmatteh: Kano, could be
mattmatteh: Kano, could have been the file i had
Kano: 720p usually works fine with cpu load
Kano: but 1080p is problematic
mattmatteh: perhaps thats why it was almost having a hard time
mattmatteh: there was a heros episode i was watching, and i think that was h264 or something 1080p
mattmatteh: has nvidia now
Kano: 180.22?
mattmatteh: 173.14.09
Kano: you have to upgrade
Kano: which distro?
mattmatteh: Kano, i stick with stable gentoo
JayF: im wondering why h.264 decoding wasn supportet by ati
mattmatteh: Kano, but..........
Kano: mattmatteh: install 180.22
mattmatteh: Kano, i did an update a few weeks ago and after, all my rendering was super slow
JayF: im watching 1080p stream with <10% load
mattmatteh: Kano, like a few seconds to show a blank page in epiphany
mattmatteh: JayF, what codec ?
mattmatteh: JayF, mpeg2 is easy
Kano: mattmatteh: hmm, did you ever disable composite?
JayF: a traile from trailers.apple.com
mattmatteh: Kano, i never enabled it
Kano: it is enabled by default
mattmatteh: hates trailers.apple.com
JayF: thought they use h.264
JayF: loves trailer.apple.com for fast download speeds
mattmatteh: JayF, i can never find the download link. and if i find a trailer from apple, it has the stupid apple logo on the lower right. F that
mattmatteh: Kano, well, i did a reinstall and its working fine now
kronos003: looks like you guys have something like sisoft sandra meets 3dmark for linux - nice
mattmatteh: Kano, not exactly a reinstall, but moved drives, so i reinstalled kinda
JayF: mattmatteh just copy the link, set a 'h' in front of the resolution and wget the trailer
mattmatteh: JayF, i dont think i can even get a link
mattmatteh: JayF, that might need javashit
mattmatteh: JayF, i dont bother
JayF: hm, possible ...never checked out
mattmatteh: JayF, i never have java enabled
mattmatteh: JayF, i close the blank web page
kronos003: dont suppose the is a phoronix test suite rpm for fedora is there/
kronos003: ?
mattmatteh: Kano, how can i check if that is enabled ?
JayF: mattmatteh: so ask me for the link next time :o)
mattmatteh: JayF, ok
Kano: xdpyinfo |grep Composite
mattmatteh: JayF, more importantly, is there a stupid ugly apple logo on the trailer ?
mattmatteh: JayF, now apple has exclusive trailers ?
mattmatteh: stays away from apple
JayF: mattmatteh: cant see any
mattmatteh: JayF, if you find some trailers that you think are good, feel free to PM me with the link :P
JayF: 1080p oder 720p? :o)
mattmatteh: JayF, 1080 should work, but give both
Kano: mattmatteh: you have to compile mplayer-vdpau then too
mattmatteh: Kano, how new is that ? i would need an ebuild
Kano: last year, but you need to install 180.22 first
mattmatteh: wolverine is using one core. was at 40 %, then is bouncing between 35 and 70 %
mattmatteh: amd 4850e 2.5 ghz
JayF: mattmatteh: so you are rendering with cpu?
mattmatteh: JayF, i think i am decoding in cpu, and using xv to render
mattmatteh: but thats a guess
mattmatteh: mplayer says thats h264
mattmatteh: but not sure how many varients of h264 there are
Kano: sure,but not vdpau
Kano: mplayer -vc help|grep vdpau
mattmatteh: Kano, right
Kano: you need -vo vdpau -vc something-with-vdpau
mattmatteh: dont have any of that
Kano: well your driver is to old, therefore: install 180.22 again
mattmatteh: Kano, well, it works for 1080p trailers, and it easily works for dvd
mattmatteh: so i dont need more at the moment
mattmatteh: Kano, not like blue ray works
Kano: michaellarabel: did you try the hyperspace installer yet?
maligor: hyperspace installer?
Kano: http://hyperspace.com/HyperSpace/Download/Download.aspx
kronos003: mattmatteh: whats wrong with apple
mattmatteh: kronos003, i am an apple fan. i dont like to dig through javascript to find a simple link to download a file. there have been a few trailers that i have seen with the apple logo on it. i have no patience for that crap :S i used to like apple, but that opinion is decreasing. but still way better than microsoft.
kronos003: mattmatteh: i agree
kronos003: i dislike vista to the point that my customers have 2 options apple or linux - usually on a dell (cheap and fairly reliable - customer service sux though)
mattmatteh: kronos003, and this afternoon, i went to their trailer site, and big sign that says some trailer was exclusive ..... i stopped right there and closed the web page. i dont like playing corporate games.
kronos003: lol
mattmatteh: kronos003, customers of what
kronos003: i fix computers for a living
Kano: michaellarabel: btw. virtualbox 2.1.2 is uploaded currently
mattmatteh: kronos003, but like i said, i still like apple, not just all of it. and i still suggest apple over windows
kronos003: im moving to a new area so dont have a shop right now
mattmatteh: kronos003, ahh. there is business without windows ?
Kano: http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/2.1.2/
kronos003: mattmatteh: i sell solutions not headaches
mattmatteh: kronos003, :D
kronos003: and ms with their latest bs is just giving me an excuse to tell my customers to jump ship
mattmatteh: kronos003, didnt think people like you existed
mattmatteh: kronos003, any good with alsa ?
kronos003: who whant to pay 600USD for a peice of bloatware
mattmatteh: kronos003, there are many fools in this world
mattmatteh: kronos003, i still see it over and over again
kronos003: mattmatteh: i live on fedora - havent had too many runnins with alsa
mattmatteh: kronos003, i cant figure out how to get my line in to work
kronos003: ive been pretty lucky - most problems i encounter i fix with the help of irc
mattmatteh: kronos003, tried that
mattmatteh: kronos003, i have a feeling it might be something with the driver and card being too new
mattmatteh: nvidia 8200
mattmatteh: alc 1200 ?
kronos003: mattmatteh: what distro you on? have you tried compiling all the alsa stuff from scratch and im guessing you would also have to recompile your kernel as well to get the newest stuff in
mattmatteh: kronos003, gentoo, and using ~ alsa-drivers
kronos003: i just heard over in fedora that the latest F10 kernel breaks support for the intel HDA or something along those lines
mattmatteh: kronos003, i am using 2.6.26-gentoo-r4
kronos003: im running F9 right now - that was problem for me when i first got my laptop - there were a few things i could do since support for my chipset was just added - the XEN kernel was a PAIN.
kronos003: i would lspci and lsusb to find your audio chipset identifier and google it
mattmatteh: kronos003, i was going to try xen, but the nvidia blob bitched
kronos003: KVM work nice
mattmatteh: when i enabled it in the kernel
kronos003: i have a winxp vm that runs almost natively
mattmatteh: kronos003, thought you didnt use windows, or is that vista only you dont ?
kronos003: dislike vista
mattmatteh: oh
kronos003: i use windows for everything i cant do in linux - like windows specific web interfaces or proprietary shipping apps or whatever i need
kronos003: honestly i only have firefox and coreldraw loaded in my xp vm
mattmatteh: kronos003, windows specific web interface ? wtf is that
kronos003: also help with those bitchy java apps that dislike my 64bit linux
kronos003: have a look at the webbased shipping console for paypal
kronos003: it runs on java and sofar doesnt like my linux java install - doesnt know what to do with the printers
kronos003: nothing a vm and cups cant solve
mattmatteh: kronos003, i havent used a vm
mattmatteh: yet
mattmatteh: kronos003, have never used paypal either
kronos003: my wife wants xp on my laptop when i upgrade - aside from my distaste for M$, this machine was made for vista and as such i cant even get XP drivers for it. so she didnt like me telling her that if she wanted xp she would have to live with a VM install
kronos003: mattmatteh: what is your cpu
mattmatteh: kronos003, amd 4850e
kronos003: btw the kernel drivers for kvm are included in the mainline kernel from what i hear
kronos003: that sounds new
kronos003: you should get kvm and try it - you might like it - you can make windows believe its running on bare hw
kronos003: nothing i hate more than crappy performance
mattmatteh: kronos003, i havent used a windows operating system in 6 years, i would rather not.
mattmatteh: kronos003, might do that for some software testing, but not ready for that yet
kronos003: i used to run xen but since their stuff held the xen kernel back and is a pain to impliment i finnally moved to kvm
mattmatteh: kronos003, but i might try that, that is one of the reasons i finally upgraded to a new comptuer
kronos003: mattmatteh: have you used vmware?
kronos003: im told kvm is almost as friendly
mattmatteh: just sucks because i am wasting more time messing with this trying to get it to work
mattmatteh: kronos003, nope
mattmatteh: trying to get my sound working now
kronos003: google your audiochip identifier and if you dont get anything useful try talking to the folks on #alsa
mattmatteh: kronos003, did that, and did that
mattmatteh: kronos003, just posted in the gentoo forums under multimedia
mattmatteh: goes to eat lunch
kronos003: bummer - i had to wait for sound (a few months i think) - guess you are in the same boat - would be nice if the mfgrs would just release source and docs - save everybody the hassle
kronos003: funny thing is that they use to do just that back in the days of the XT
kronos003: i remember using machine code to get into onboard bios on westerndigital harddrive controllers
kronos003: no f10 or esc key back then
starkmjolk: lo all
EruditeHermit: hi, anyone have tips on keeping a GPU or CPU fan quiet after a few years? They seem to get really noisly
EruditeHermit: can I use WD40 or something to lubricate it or is that a bad idea?
Milyardo: Welcome back from the otherside
Milyardo: I guess
Milyardo: >.>
kronos003: EruditeHermit: no real way to resuscitate a pc fan - their like lightbulbs - not a question of if but when
kronos003: if you peel back the sticker and VERY carefully add lube(not to much - or else the sticker wont stick) then put the sticker back on, you might buy a bit of time but not much. btw the sticker holds the lubrication in so if it doesnt stick your screwed
kronos003: you really dont want grease all over your cpu gpu or mainboard
kronos003: also - no sticker and the fan burns out really fast
EruditeHermit: kronos003: its the GPU fan that is especially bad
EruditeHermit: the main CPU fan is tolerable, not too bad
EruditeHermit: is it the same principle?
