Phoronix IRC Log: 2009-01-06

michaellarabel: Morning
michaellarabel: Milyardo: ping
Kano: hi michaellarabel , that switching between win + hyperspace looked really cool
Kano: michaellarabel: is it possible to chainload to the hidden partition?
Kano: like is there a bootloader itself installed
Kano: which would be very logicial that they only add a small one which chainloads then
michaellarabel: Kano: Still investigating it
Xemanth: michaellarabel: is it possible that you could get Lenovo Thinkpad SL400 to test ? It looks very nice machine
michaellarabel: Xemanth: Highly unlikely since Lenovo has never sent out anything before :(
Xemanth: ah too bad :|
Milyardo: michaellarabel: pong
michaellarabel: Milyardo: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=Njk3Mg
Milyardo: :D I got that same feeling from Ryan too when I talked to him about it
Milyardo: a few months ago that is
Milyardo: I knew he knew something
Kano: well i play games that work now
Kano: anybody wants to play smokin' guns ;)
Milyardo: Unfortunately that won't make the AACMs any more friendly to Linux or Mac users
Milyardo: I never did get that extact quote from the PM Pye sent me did I? Unfortunately he never responded when I asked if I could share what he told me in the PM
Milyardo: Hey michaellarabel, does hw_gpu_frequency() support nvdia cards?
michaellarabel: Yes it does
Milyardo: I don't see a if(IS_NVIDIA_GRAPHICS) line in there
michaellarabel: Because of the els that polls hw_gpu_current_frequency()
michaellarabel: else*
michaellarabel: Due to PowerPlay, there needs to be a special case for ATI but for the rest you can use the current frequency
Milyardo: Should I add a comment on Why ATi cards get thier stock frq polled instead?
Milyardo: *freq
michaellarabel: I can add it in. If you're looking for something to work on, I know of something that would be a good starter.
Milyardo: I'm just trying to learn PTS at the moment, which is why I'm going through every function producing documentation for it
michaellarabel: Oh, nice :)
Kano: michaellarabel: did you see the hd video download page here: http://divx.com/de/downloads/divx-7-showcase
Kano: the funny thing is: none of the sizes that you read there are correct ;)
Kano: and currently it is dead slow
michaellarabel: I see
Kano: if the site would be faster maybe good for testing vdpau or so
Milyardo: michaellarabel: How do I sync my local git repository with phorogit?
michaellarabel: Milyardo: git-pull
Milyardo: git-pull http://www.phorogit.com/repo/phoronix-test-suite.git ?
michaellarabel: You shouldn't even need to specify the URL if you're within a git repository already
Milyardo: maybe I don't have this set up correctly then
Milyardo: * refusing to create funny ref 'remotes/origin/*' locally
Milyardo: No changes.
Milyardo: thats what I get without the URL
michaellarabel: Does it work with the URL?
Milyardo: Failed to fetch HEAD from http://www.phorogit.com/repo/phoronix-test-suite.git
Milyardo: :(
michaellarabel: What if you try git-pull origin
michaellarabel: Or git-pull origin/master
Milyardo: origin get me
Milyardo: * refusing to create funny ref 'remotes/origin/*' locally
Milyardo: No changes.
Milyardo: and origin/master gets me
Milyardo: Failed to fetch HEAD from http://www.phorogit.com/repo/phoronix-test-suite.git/master
michaellarabel: Did you git-clone to begin with and any git commands since then?
michaellarabel: Or does: git-pull . work?
Milyardo: Yes I used git-clone to init my repository, and I can use commit and add just fine
Milyardo: oops
Milyardo: should I have not used clone?
michaellarabel: No, clone is what you should use whenever you start the new repo
michaellarabel: But does git-pull . work?
Milyardo: no I think I know what the issue it now though
Milyardo: I just remebered that I first clone the repo on my laptop, and used rsync to sync the repo with whats on my server
Milyardo: at school
Milyardo: it seems raptor can't communicate with phorogit
Milyardo: what ports does git use?
michaellarabel: Phorogit is using port 80 over hTTP
Milyardo: oh hrmm
Milyardo: I have $http_proxy specified
Milyardo: I can wget the URL
michaellarabel: Git is using curl
Milyardo: http://pastebin.com/d55988b99
Milyardo: curl should use $http_proxy as well shouldn't it?
michaellarabel: Not sure
Milyardo: curl works fine as well
michaellarabel: hmm
michaellarabel: May want to check out Google then about git and proxies
michaellarabel: When did you initially pull?
Milyardo: I intially pulled on my laptop from home
Milyardo: then used rsync over ssh on the directory with raptor
michaellarabel: When though? If it was recently, nothing major that would affect documentation in a number of days.
Milyardo: Jan 2nd is when I cloned
michaellarabel: I think you should be mostly fine.
Milyardo: michaellarabel: http://raptor.umflint.edu/~zpowers/doxy-pts-core/html/
Milyardo: :)
michaellarabel: Nice :)
Milyardo: GOt my quake Live Beta keeeeeyyyyyy
Milyardo: win
Milyardo: WOnder if it works on Linux
Deanjo: LMAO http://www.theonion.com/content//node/92328
Milyardo: :D
michaellarabel: Milyardo: So how much of the code do you have documented right now?
Deanjo: Wonder if there is linux support for the wheel in the kernel yet Milyardo ?
Milyardo: I've done pts-functions.php
Milyardo: and I'
Milyardo: I'm working on pts-functions_system_graphics.php today
Milyardo: No quake live on Linux :(
Milyardo: I wonder if Changing my useragent string will help
Deanjo: Hmmmm, new logitech keyboard http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/gaming/pc_gaming/mice_keyboards/devices/4956&cl=us,en##
Kano: Milyardo: browsergame?
Xemanth: any java guru here ?
Xemanth: i need little teaching
Xemanth: :~(
Milyardo: quakelive.com
Milyardo: Xemanth: I wouldn't call myself a Guru, but I may be able to help
Xemanth: priv
Deanjo: itunes now DRM free
Kano: i will not use it anyway ;)
Deanjo: Most of my music is still my own rips in flac
Kano: the noise is so loud here, flac is really not needed ;)
bkero: What was the reason for not using iTunes before?
bkero: DRM?
Deanjo: Well, there are a few reasons, first of all you need to use the itunes app, drm, sound quality wasn't the greatest.
Kano: its not for linux?
Deanjo: Well you can run the itunes app through wine
bkero: It wines, supported under 'crossover office'
bkero: can't hear the difference between flac rips and itunes alac
Deanjo: alac is something relatively new to the itunes lifeline
Kano: prefers amarok
Deanjo: Amarok 1.4 yes. 2.0 sucks ass
Kano: i only use 1.4.10
Deanjo: They even screwed up Amarok 2's looks
Kano: never tried amarok 2
Deanjo: The play buttons for example on the default skin looks stupid as hell
Deanjo: Plus the scripts are not there yet. But that will come with time I suppose
Deanjo: Maybe by the time KDE 4.3 comes around stuff will be better
Deanjo: Right now too many key apps are still not completely ported, Amarok, k3b, kaffeine, etc
Deanjo: All of which happen to be big reasons for people to be using kde in the first place
Deanjo: At least the ktorrent crew were on the ball
Deanjo: It would be nice to have a QT4 port of xchat
Kano: konversation is fine
Deanjo: konversation isn't even QT4 yet
Kano: i dont use kde4
Deanjo: and has very limited script availability
Kano: well i only need one script and that works ;)
bkero: Amarok is too QT-tastic and too ruby-tastic for my tastes.
Deanjo: QT is one of it's nicest features :D
bkero: Kinda heavy
bkero: Especially if it's the only program you use that's QT
bkero: Then it's not really a shared library.
Deanjo: Ahhh, your one of them minimalist guys
bkero: You could say that.
Kano: Deanjo: did you ever play the smokin guns game?
Kano: or did you only find it
Deanjo: Played it for a bit
GNU\colossus: anyone of you ever played Magic: The Gathering (the collectible card game)
jim_sveta: list
jim_sveta: !list
Deanjo: http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/06/video-nec-crvd-display-hands-on/
Kano: Deanjo: could you use the precompiled binary? i needed to compile it for etch and lenny
Deanjo: Ya worked right from the start
Kano: hmm suse only or what *g*
Deanjo: Works fine on blue white too
Kano: well i compiled it for debian, even found a bug that other basedirs did not work
Deanjo: Was it segfaulting on deb?
Kano: yes
Kano: the duel mode is really cool
Deanjo: The intro movies look very 1999
Deanjo: Dare I say even Quake 1 ish
Kano: i can not see it with 16:10 ;)
Kano: only outro
Deanjo: It would really be nice if gaming on linux wasn't so limited to FPS's
jim_sveta: can I get some direction for expressgate hack
Kano: Deanjo: go for frets on fire ;)
Lightkey: there's plenty of rogue-likes! ;-)
Deanjo: lol
Kano: jim_sveta: anything you need to know
Deanjo: Milky Way galaxy Now 50% bigger!!!
Deanjo: w00t!!! More bang for the buck :P
Milyardo: http://beta.quakelive.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6556
Wyatt: Anyone have a good recommendation for a new GPU? I have to return the one that I've been borrowing.
Wyatt: PCI-E and preferably only around $50
Wyatt: I've dealt with nvidia and ati and am not super happy with either. Intel doesn't seem to make discrete parts yet...
Wyatt: I've been trying to find good recent information on this Chrome phenomenon that seems to involve Via and S3 of all people, but it's a little elusive.
Deanjo: Chrome support is crappy in any os
Wyatt: Then what would be a good one for right now?
Deanjo: For best over OS support? That still has to be nvidia
Deanjo: If you can't live with blobs then ATI
Wyatt: What about for $50?
Deanjo: Nvidia 8400/8600's fit that bill
Wyatt: ATi's actually tempting for the better KDE4 performance, if nothing else.
Deanjo: I have no issues with KDE4 performance with nv
Wyatt: Really? Huh, maybe they fixed it, then.
Deanjo: Since the 4.1 release and the 180 series have no issues with the performance
Deanjo: 180 series drivers
Wyatt: Well then, I'll see if I can't dig up a deal. About what sort of hit will I see performance-wise going to an 8600?
Deanjo: compared to what?
Wyatt: Sorry, this loaner's an 8800
Deanjo: Well the 8800GT is a far better card then the 8600
Deanjo: If your doing alot of windows gaming then the 8800GT will give a substantial increase in FPS
Wyatt: Not much. I run Audiosurf in wine, but beyond that...
Deanjo: Then you probably won't notice any difference
Wyatt: Man...the linux drivers are that bad?
Deanjo: No your just not running anything that really puts demand on a card
Wyatt: Oh! Sorry, my bad. I don't have Windows and the extent of windows games i play is pretty much that. I use it for other things, though.
Wyatt: Anyway, I'm afraid I must bow out for now. Thanks for the tips.
Wyatt: Ciao
cxo: that pheonix hyperspace shit is sloooooooooooooooooow
cxo: no review on the 9.2 beta driver??
cxo: looks surprised
cxo: finally
cxo: gave up today
cxo: bought a 4870 in october, and now its on my desk, put back the 7600gs in
cxo: i fukin hate ati
