Phoronix IRC Log: 2008-12-13

Deanjo: michaelsnicksuck, change your nick back you weenie
Erektium: ;D
Erektium: yep
Erektium: I agree
Erektium: it's too long
Deanjo: Well he is from Ottawa, they are a bit off the rocker over there
Erektium: ;D
michaellarabel: Deanjo have you tried 180.16?
Deanjo: Not yet. Just getting ready to install openSUSE 11.1
Deanjo: will use them there
Erektium: does larabel mean something?
Erektium: ;D
Erektium: just wondering
Deanjo: Gotta do some testing for Thunderbird as well when I get that done. Lots of work for me today. :D
Deanjo: had a "banner" day yesterday, new bios, new drivers, new distro, free stuff from novell, job offer for more money, won on the lottery (not the jackpot though)
Deanjo: I see the new vdpau now supports "scene" standards lol
michaelsnicksuck: s
michaelsnicksuck: its -20degC today
michaelsnicksuck: hates the fuking cold
Deanjo: pffft, wimp, it's -37 with windchill here
Deanjo: ( Operating System ) Linux openSUSE 11.1 (x86_64) Kernel: 2.6.27.7-9-default, GNU/Linux | Xorg: 1.5.2 | Desktop: KDE: 3.5.1 | IRC CLient: X-Chat v.2.8.6
mha: oh noes.
Deanjo: muhahahaha
Deanjo: is glad he rsync'd when the ftp was open
Deanjo: WTH? lol, the nv crew must be putting in OT this weekend or something
GNU\colossus: Deanjo: kde 3.5.1?
GNU\colossus: trailing zeroes matter!
Deanjo: The xchat script truncates it
Deanjo: Too lazy to fix it
GNU\colossus: you're using xchat under KDE?
Deanjo: Ya
GNU\colossus: why not konversation?
Deanjo: Because konversation sucks for scripting
Erektium: it's +4C here
Erektium: ;D
GNU\colossus: hmm I don't know what you need to have scripted, but I live very happily with konvi here. I'm an ex-xchat user.
Deanjo: Plus my prefs and that are on a ntfs drive so when in windows I have the same setup
GNU\colossus: ah I see
GNU\colossus: that's a nice benefit
Deanjo: Same with FF opera and such
GNU\colossus: (if you're using windows, that is)
Deanjo: I like consistance
Erektium: michaelsnicksuck, where are you if it's so cold
Deanjo: consistancy
Erektium: or Deanjo omg that's cold
Deanjo: heh
Deanjo: Ya, had too put on pants today
Erektium: I bet
Deanjo: Supposed to get colder tomorrow and all week is supposed to be like this
Erektium: i'm glad I live in finland we at least have +4
Erektium: atm
Deanjo: Ya well the closest ocean to me is a good 20+ hour drive away
Erektium: I have about an hour drive away
SlickMcRunfast: Will the nVidia big bang 2 every happen?
maligor: what's that?
Deanjo: thinks if he took his system outside today he could probably squeak another 500 Mhz out of the overclock
michaelsnicksuck: twas -20degC today
EruditeHermit: hi, what kind of power supply do I need to run core i7 and an ATI HD450 or NV GeForce 9800GT? What kind of wattage? Also, which is the most efficient and most power efficient power supply?
EruditeHermit: err economical
redeeman: i'd say a 450 watt should be fine
cxo: ola
Deanjo: Got off your identity crisis finally?
Deanjo: "Hi everyone. Can someone please explain how to get xsnow working with Compiz?" uhhuh like I'll waste time helping with that
cxo: hmm i'm using gaim now, so michael's nick doesnt affect me anymore
cxo: whats new?
cxo: is a good mood today
Deanjo: Nothing much, just putting the suse build service through it's paces to build some of those "questionable" rpms :D
cxo: suse is so 1997
Deanjo: pffft
Deanjo: cutting edge shit man
cxo: you're a fluorescent green on gaim
Deanjo: your green here too on xchat
Deanjo: How..... Christmassy
cxo: weird
cxo: my merc was very upset today about the cold
cxo: i drove around with a 2nd battery in the passenger footwell
Deanjo: lol
cxo: no starting the jag though
cxo: V12s dont like the cold one bit
cxo: still waiting on my magnetic heater thing
Deanjo: just has to turn a key on -30c on a chevy
cxo: yeah and what year is that engine?
Deanjo: 1980 350
Deanjo: 1987 350, 1967 327, 2004 5.3
cxo: 1975 5.3Litre V12, and its been sitting for the last 3years. Got it started once 2 weeks ago before it got cold
cxo: just changed the oil and plugs
Deanjo: The old dodge would have one hell of a time turning over though with it's 383
cxo: i got carbs too
cxo: some guys were suggesting to convert it to EFI, but i dont know what the real benefit is going to be
Deanjo: Heh the 87 and 2004 are the only thing with fuel injection here.
Deanjo: Well that's mine anyways, The wifes minivan and truck are as well
cxo: most...all european cars after 1980 were EFI
Deanjo: IIRC Chevy started in 1982
Deanjo: maybe 81
Deanjo: I know my old 80 Chev truck was one if not the last year for carbs
cxo: 1975 was the last yr of carbs for Jaguar.
Deanjo: It was mechanical fuel injection after right?
cxo: no, electric, i dont think jag ever used mechanical fuel injection
cxo: mercedes used mechanical in the early 70s
Deanjo: Chevy did mechanical back in 56 IIRC
Deanjo: Chevy Bel-Air
cxo: hey you heard they are going to stop selling the Ford Ranger?
Deanjo: listens to some idiot revving an engine at 4 grand to warm it up outside
cxo: haha
Deanjo: morons
Deanjo: Just waiting for that lifter rod to pop through anytime now lol
cxo: new engines will take the punishing if you service them
cxo: hey have you done any metal work before?
Deanjo: I don't care how new of an engine it is. Revving an engine @ 4k+ right off the bat is never good especially in -30 + weather
Deanjo: Oil is only so viscous at that temp
cxo: well dont run 20/50 in the winter
Deanjo: lol fuck I don't run that in the summer let alone the winter
Deanjo: Don't even run that weight in the tractors lol
cxo: haha
Deanjo: not in the block anyways
cxo: thats the recommended oil for old jags actually
cxo: but i've got 5/30 in it right now
Deanjo: Ya well they would have to have that weight other wise they are like a Harley Davidson...... leak on the showroom floor
michaellarabel: Deanjo: In the RC releases for OpenSuSE are there many debugging options enabled?
Deanjo: Ya there might me. They used too. I didn't make much notice of it when I was using them
cxo: michael is pink!
Deanjo: tries to remember what package warsow always bitches about
cxo: drops a bomb
EruditeHermit: redeeman: 450W is enough? any suggestions on a particular brand or model for best efficiency?
redeeman: well.. i think most of the good psu's have somewhat same effeciency, just look and see whether they are 90+ certified or whatever they call it
redeeman: i have a corsair PSU and im happy with it
Deanjo: 90+ efficiency is rare
redeeman: the good ones specify it
Deanjo: 80+ is usually the goal
redeeman: don't they?
redeeman: or is it 80+ ? hmm
Deanjo: It's 80, really good ones will hit like 85-87
redeeman: i don't understand that though
redeeman: granted, im by far an expert in electronics, but i have rudimentary understanding of switchmode supplies, and 90% effeciency should be too hard
EruditeHermit: and even though a PSU is rated for X Watts, that just means that is the max it uses right?
EruditeHermit: max it is capable of supplying
redeeman: yes what it's capable of supplying is what i'd guess
redeeman: so it may draw more
Deanjo: look less at watts and more at amps on the rails
EruditeHermit: larger currents that it supplies?
redeeman: well if it's a single rail supply that kindof gives itself
EruditeHermit: or lower?
redeeman: EruditeHermit: you want it to be able to supply as high current as you need, atleast
Deanjo: Not really redeeman, cheapass power supplies love to have insane 3.3 volt ratings
redeeman: lol
redeeman: i don't deal in elcheapo psu's
Deanjo: Where of course it really doesn't do any good
redeeman: EruditeHermit: i have 3 corsair supplies, singlerail, they are very nice
EruditeHermit: what is singlerail?
redeeman: only a single +12v rail
Deanjo: Plus they like to include the -V values which no modern board really uses
EruditeHermit: as opposed to +6 and -6?
Deanjo: I with I could remember the brand of powersupply a saw that when I popped it open to see why it fried I discovered a huge ass lead weight in it to give it some "feel of quality"
redeeman: that's hilarious
Deanjo: Ya, Kenwood car amps used to be the same way
Deanjo: brb
bkero: lol kenwood
bkero: lol
bkero: Less at watts and more at amps on the same voltage?
bkero: Did watts suddenly not be V*A?
redeeman: bkero: i believe he meant looking at the ratings for the specific voltage where it's of interrest
Deanjo: Yes the amperage rating of each rail
bkero: Oh, on each rail. Ok. As far as I can tell, the big 'watt' number on the box is mostly meaningless.
Deanjo: They pretty much are useless
cxo: its so quiet these days
