Phoronix IRC Log: 2008-12-06
Deanjo: Got a 690 board here, to fix the video playback I did the easiest fix. Put a nvidia card in it
bkero: I got it rendering some 1080p Howl's Moving Castle before I left.
bkero: Using git head :)
Deanjo: Sure but that thing is sucking the juice
Deanjo: Power consumption for a GTX280 = Idle or 2D (about 25 W), HD/DVD video (about 35 W), Sterling 3D mode (up to 236 W)
bkero: rs690 is sucking juice?
Deanjo: The CPU would be
Deanjo: Which isn't desirable in a HTPC
bkero: Where'd you get the 35w for hd playback?
Deanjo: http://ixbtlabs.com/articles3/video/spravka-gt2xx-p4.html
bkero: I wonder if it would really take 35w to render some video
Deanjo: I know the fans never kick out of their lowest fan speed playing HD on the 8800GT's
bkero: A lot of manufacturerers were a little overcompensating for the obnoxious noises that 8800GT's originally made. :P
bkero: Or was that th eother way around? The fan wouldn't kick in and they would overheat?
Deanjo: The early ones wouldn't kick down
Deanjo: Those were primarily the cards that used a external sensor that did not kick down
Deanjo: ie Asus cards
bkero: I have an evga card that does :/
Deanjo: later evga's don't
Deanjo: I've got a later one
Deanjo: Same with my palit
bkero: Mine was from the initial release
bkero: I think I paid near $220 for it
Deanjo: Ya I tend to buy my cards when the next gen is released
Deanjo: It's a lot cheaper staying 1 gen behind
bkero: I wouldn't really call 8800GT's one gen behind now
bkero: Since a 9800GT is just a fucking rebrand
Deanjo: Ya but there have been multiple steppings of the chip since then
Deanjo: I try not to buy 1st stepping / gen releases of anything
Deanjo: With the 9800GT's there are some diffences though with the newer ones. such as Hybrid power support, tri-sli and of course the die shrink
bkero: Clockspeed, shader count, and core are the same though :P
Deanjo: Well even the clock speeds have gone up a bit because of the die shrink
Deanjo: I haven't seen any of the later models stuck at 600/900
Deanjo: Your die shrunk models typically have a base of 650/1000
bkero: 600/900, 600/900, 600/900, 600/900, 650/963, 600/900, 600/900, 600/900, 600/900, 700/900, 680/1000 is the first page on newegg
bkero: 8800GT's were touted as overclockable when they were first released too. Hell, I've gotten mine up to 770/1030
bkero: that doesn't really count though, because that's under a koosah
Deanjo: Oh hell ya they clock like mad men
bkero: The RAM is usually on the brink though
Deanjo: That's dependent on the ram chips though and their cooling
Deanjo: Ram on my palit can hit 100 Mhz more then the PNY
bkero: lol did you actually buy one of the palits with 1gb?
Deanjo: No mine is a 512
bkero: the 1gb didn't do anything
bkero: Although I was thinking about using half of it as an MTD device
Deanjo: Ya well ram never really factors in unless your cranking up the res and antialiasing
bkero: I looked at a lot of benchmarks on it, and I never saw any performance gains on it
bkero: Besides in MS Flight Sim X
bkero: But...fuck that.
Deanjo: And typically those cards that come later on with larger ram usually actually have slower ram chips
bkero: That one didn't though
bkero: Which is why i didn't mention it :P
Deanjo: But hey the kids all think "More ram must be faster!!!"
Deanjo: More marketing then anything
Deanjo: Alot of kids think running cards in sli will double their memory too
Deanjo: Well I'm off to bed, night
bkero: Damn it, why'd I look at this? http://staff.osuosl.org/~bkero/bacon.jpg
bkero: Later
Milyardo: "One of his goals is to incrementally integrate synergistically combined Web 2.0-paradigms with web analytics to create horizontally scalable enterprise solutions."
Milyardo: Don't tell me you wrote that bkero
Milyardo: Nice hair by the way
Milyardo: http://www.linux.com/feature/154368
Milyardo: Let the VM benchmarking begin!
maligor: dreadful architehcture
Milyardo: lol
Milyardo: Its only VNC, how slow could it be?
Milyardo: :)
Milyardo: OpenGL renderer string: Software Rasterizer
Milyardo: Thats not the correct string for Intel cards is it?
bkero: Milyardo: Horrible shit, isn't it?
Milyardo: :(
cxo: burps
Deanjo: In the words of Napoleon Bonaparte "Brrrrrrrr, it fucking cold out!"
Azerthoth: how cold?
Deanjo: -15
Azerthoth: f/c ?
Deanjo: c of course. I ain't no yank. :P
Azerthoth: gah thats not cold
Deanjo: hitting -28 tonight
Azerthoth: OK thats cold
Deanjo: It's not bad, as long as there is no wind
Azerthoth: yup, but there is always wind for me
Deanjo: The wind right now is a real killer
Azerthoth: Bering Sea Coast
Deanjo: With windchill -32 right now
Azerthoth: icky
Deanjo: Ya, I don't mind -35, but once that wind gets involved....
Azerthoth: right now I have freezing rain and winds
Azerthoth: also @ -25c
Azerthoth: er -15c
Deanjo: Nice,
Deanjo: I keep waiting for that call that says "You've just won a trip to mexico!"
Deanjo: Of course ideally that would follow the winning of the lottery
bkero: More likely: "You've won a free trip to gitmo!"
Deanjo: lol I would probably win a trip to my local of living
Deanjo: Ok now this lawsuit is just plain stupid http://www.audioholics.com/news/industry-news/monster-cable-sue
cxo: you saw wallmart has the iPhone for $99
cxo: heh audioholics, i'm a member since 1979
Deanjo: That lawsuit is just plain stupid, Monster Cable should have to pay big fines for wasting court time
Deanjo: What next? Are they going to go after Monster.com?
Deanjo: Go after royalties everytime "Monster Mash" is played?
Milyardo: What are they sueing for this time?
Deanjo: The use of Monster in a company name
Deanjo: Monster Cable vs Monster Golf Carts
Deanjo: Like people would really confuse those two
Milyardo: lol?
Milyardo: That makes even less sense than that RCA lawsuit Monster had
Deanjo: The courts really have to start imposing heavy fines on stupid lawsuits like this
Milyardo: They sued some other cable comany because one of thier RCA cables looked like thier RCA cables
Milyardo: and thus violated Monster's Patent
Milyardo: How about Disbarrment for the Lawyers who push this stuff
Deanjo: Ya, lawyers need to be shot
Deanjo: It's no wonder the justice system always has a backlog
cxo: Lawyers are not evil
Milyardo: cxo is though
Milyardo: RAWR
Deanjo: cxo= Anti-Christ
cxo: Its what Managers, Government and Politicians tell them to do is what is evil
Deanjo: I agree there cxo, people bitching at DRM measures for example shouldn't be bitching at the device manufacturers that incorporate it. They should be bitching to the politicians about making it a legal requirement.
Milyardo: Tis true, in order to get an MBA at some Ivy league schools you must make a profit from your own soul
Milyardo: and its become all too easy with todays legal system
Milyardo: Proof: http://xkcd.com/501/
Deanjo: searches for a cheap ass unlocked plain cell phone
Deanjo: Dammit, I don't need all this web crap on a phone
Milyardo: lol
Milyardo: I don't need web crap either
Milyardo: though an ssh client would be l33t
Milyardo: where's my phone with an ssh client instead of a web browser?
Deanjo: I know I sound weird saying this but I just want a phone that can make and receive phone calls.
cxo: Deanjo, Weirdo!
Deanjo: Take all that extra crap out and give me good battery life. Is that so hard?
cxo: Who buys Mobiles for making telephone calls!?? duh!
Deanjo: Ya I know cxo I must be smoking cheap drugs
Deanjo: Must be that Ontario weed
cxo: haha
cxo: yeah those safety regulations it has to meet these days. not healthy anymore
Deanjo: Well you know, it was cheaper, that BC stuff catches premium prices
cxo: Don't you know that the most important thing on a phone is the Calculator and the Alarm
Deanjo: Ya Calc is welcomed
Deanjo: same with alarm
Deanjo: But I don't even want texting
Deanjo: It's annoying as hell when a drunk keeps putting in the wrong cell number texting you all the time.
Deanjo: Had one guy in China continuously calling my phone because he had the wrong number. To make matters worse he didn't understand "You have the wrong number." in english
Deanjo: After a week of it I finally got the telco to block the number
cxo: silly
cxo: you could have out sourced your hacking to him
cxo: hes paying the international charges anyways
Deanjo: lol
Deanjo: I should of did the Dude where's my car line. "And dennnnn?"
cxo: its been ages since i watched that movie, cant even remember it
Deanjo: It's the scene when they are trying to order Chinese food
Deanjo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TmMFwabrNeM
cxo: haha
Deanjo: Funniest part of the whole movie
Deanjo: The rest just plain sucked
cxo: Its actually a technique taught to sales people
cxo: for example, a car salesman might ask how much you are willing to put down, you say X, and he will say "up to?"
Deanjo: "Don't stop until they say stop"
cxo: But the whole system is designed for the uninformed
cxo: People who cannot make decisions on their own
Deanjo: I remember one time my wife's gf was buying a used car. She asked me to come check it out before she bought it. Despite her being there twice before and dealing with her, when I showed up, he immediately started doing his pitch to me.
Deanjo: The car was in good shape, gave her the thumbs up and the salesman then started making out the sale too me lol
cxo: Its still a mans world Dean
Deanjo: lol check this out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_SOJ4y0PXm4
cxo: haha
cxo: here check this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3tkxLNO8Gmw
cxo: The raccoon that pushes over the trash every night doesnt look that cute
Deanjo: I think the raccoon in my vid is a result of a "pet gone rogue"
cxo: oh thats your raccoon?
Deanjo: No
Deanjo: Dealt with quite a few on the farm though. Wild ones aren't that tame
Deanjo: They are destructive little bastards
cxo: Seems like a nice pet to have, If you can
Deanjo: They love tearing through wooden shaked roofs
Deanjo: My cousin took the kits from one I shot a few years back thinking they would make good pets. Tore her place apart
Deanjo: They are really cute when young
Deanjo: loves the acronym for SUSE Linux Ultimate Terminal Server
bkero: http://www.furry.org.au/badger/gallery/w_badger.jpg
Deanjo: lol
Deanjo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hsQCb0TpljA
cxo: thats cool
Deanjo: Ya, I wonder how he keeps from getting light headed lol
cxo: wtf happened to firefox
cxo: all my fonts changed
Deanjo: Changed or bigger/smaller?
cxo: changed
cxo: its all cursive all of a sudden
Deanjo: hmmm, interesting
cxo: seems to effect only certain fonts
Milyardo: css phail
Milyardo: /exit stage right
cxo: like drop down lists, google.com, numbers etc..
cxo: no google.com is fine
cxo: youtube looks a bit weird
Deanjo: thinks it has to be an illuminati conspiracy
Milyardo: I find it interesting that on average there are 10-12 new compiz videos uploaded on youtube everyday
Milyardo: do that many people really think anyone care about seeing thier linux desktop?
cxo: Windows n00bs
cxo: We are just spoiled
Deanjo: blames the plethora of compiz video's is more illuminati propaganda
Deanjo: steals Milyardo tin foil hat
Milyardo: makes himself a paper hat
Milyardo: with three corners!
cxo: thats not possible
Deanjo: Don't believe what the illuminati tells ya cxo, it is possible
Milyardo: He has a tinfoil hat, that means what he says is true
Deanjo: Yup yup
Milyardo: unless the illuminati put that hat on him!!!!
Deanjo: Oo
Milyardo: also wonders why beryl turns up more results than compiz on youtube
Milyardo: "whats the name of this video reproductor???!!!" says one youtube commenter when asking abotu mplayer
Milyardo: *about
Milyardo: I'm so using that one from now on
Milyardo: Mplayer - Worlds first Video reproductor
Deanjo: beryl just sounded less whacky
bkero: The name Beryl was used for when the technology was new and only demonstrative.
bkero: Thus, there is more content out there with the name 'beryl' attached to it.
cxo: beryl is also a precious stone
cxo: and is widely used in jewelry
bkero: PPoop is also a widely used stone
bkero: *Poop
bkero: And is used in the finest womens clothing.
redeeman: wtf
Milyardo: This Sempron can overclock pretty far on stock cooling
cxo: overclocking is so 1999
bkero: Most AM2 stuff I've seen can hit ~2.8-3GHz
bkero: Besides phenoms :P
Milyardo: I've already gone from 2.3 to 2.8
bkero: I'm going 1.8->3.25 :)
Milyardo: without an increase in tempurature
bkero: WHat vcore are you sitting at?
Milyardo: michaellarabel: All of my warsow benchmarks end with signal 11
Milyardo: http://pastebin.com/m51e171e6
cxo: segfault
Milyardo: I know, sadface :(
cxo: whats with the crazy player names
redeeman: i just made a bet with 3 swedish friends
cxo: ^3Ch^8e^3ese!^7
redeeman: that if they can refrain from speaking swedish in an irc channel
redeeman: i will make a teletubbie costume, dress up, and post photos online
cxo: that could be a tell tail sign that something bad is happening
cxo: memory getting corrupted
Milyardo: no
Milyardo: those are color codes
cxo: ok
Milyardo: changes the text color in game
cxo: did you try run it through gdb?
Milyardo: Well Warsow runs fine for me through my distro package
Milyardo: which is why I'm letting Micheal know
cxo: lazy bastard
cxo: learn to fix it, and give him a patch
bkero: Hawt. http://www.mojang.com/notch/mario/
cxo: You guys will like this http://forums.vr-zone.com/showthread.php?t=362196
bkero: lol, IBM already sells QS20 bladecenters with PS3s in them :P
cxo: I know that. I bought 10 last year
Milyardo: :)
cxo: But those are $10k/piece
bkero: Or free if you're us :D
bkero: Everybody loves open source
Milyardo: No one gives us anythig for free
Milyardo: maybe we should change our name to Open Source Lab
bkero: :P
bkero: Open Source Review Lab
Milyardo: pft if we were gay...
Milyardo: Review Lab
Milyardo: el oh el
bkero: I see a bunch of men here
cxo: pinch one of their butts, and tell us the reaction. we will deem the gayness
Milyardo: We shoudl have a OSRL vs ACM/IEEE fight for the PS3s
Milyardo: I think we'll win
cxo: Sounds like a plan
bkero: You mean roman greco wrestling?
bkero: COmplete with body lube?
Milyardo: I'll have to adjust the odds but we can do it
Milyardo: is now taking bets
Milyardo: place em now
bkero: $10 on ME
Milyardo: you do know your odds are 20:1?
cxo: sneaks round back and loads the PS3s into a van
Milyardo: If I were to put my money on anyone
Milyardo: it would be Dakan
cxo: Have you seen the "I have X PS3s" videos on youtube?
Milyardo: So I'm not too experianced with gdb, I've used Valgrind before
Milyardo: but not gdb
bkero: The only good frontend for gdb I've found is xcode
cxo: gdb programname
cxo: run
Milyardo: at least not without some frontend
Milyardo: like eclipse
cxo: (wait till it crashes)
cxo: bt
cxo: pastebin
cxo: GDB is best used without a fronted
cxo: ^frontend
Milyardo: For fatal crashes at least, the more subtle stuff is harder to trank down
Milyardo: *track
bkero: Planned Parenthood is offering gift certificates for christmas this year.
Milyardo: ?
bkero: daily show
bkero: GDB is nice, the key might be to write less compiled code though :P
cxo: I did an introductory talk at a bootcamp on GDB last month
cxo: its very basic, but if you are interested, the video is posted online, i'll find a link
edman007: does do any of the bonnie++ tests run for anyone? they all error out on my system :( (using the latest, 1.6.0a2)
edman007: plus, it says its trying to run with 4GB, and bonnie++ says thats not enough
Deanjo: Are you running the git version of PTS?
Deanjo: There were some issues with bonnie and it has been removed in GIT
bkero: Is bonnie still part of the test suite?
edman007: oh, nope...i'll upgrade i suppose
Deanjo: No bonnie has been removed "until they update it"
Deanjo: So pretty much removed forever :P
bkero: Sad, bonnie's a really comprehensive disk test
edman007: lol, ok
Deanjo: It has it's flaws
cxo: why couldnt they just use kernel build for a compile test, its completely self sufficient, you need the most basic toolchain and it will build
edman007: cxo, i think they do...
Deanjo: They do cxo
cxo: so wtf is this bonnie++ thing?
Deanjo: bonnie++ bench is a filesystem/hd test
cxo: oh
Deanjo: It's really the only "valid" compile benchmark there is
Deanjo: the kernel on that is
Deanjo: *one
Deanjo: All other compile tests can vary depending on the packages installed on your system because they auto configure
Deanjo: not to mention additional compilation for processor feature set
Deanjo: The mplayer compile time was the worst for for that
cxo: I'm going to disagree. But i'm too tired right now to debate
cxo: There is never a fair compiler performance test. There are faaaaar too many variables involved
bkero: Just give it a nice hairy ./configure with a lot of --disable's for processor features in that case
cxo: Everyone would have to use the exact same toolchain. Which is possible if you stick to distro builds
cxo: But phoronix doesnt distinguish between them, so its unfair
edman007: Deanjo, but mplayer is an exception, its just a collection of libraries, many things can be built with almost all code self contained and very few options, FF should be good for that (but their build process sucks on multi-core)...probably boost would be a great one to do too
cxo: You want a compiler work out? try compile wine or qemu
edman007: ...heh, my system does not even get warm with those
Deanjo: wine requires way to much fucking around with specifying libraries on a 64-bit system cxo
bkero: Hah, you want a compiler workout? Try compiling the OpenEmbedded MasterMakefile
bkero: When you're done you have a 20gb folder with an entire environment and buildchain
cxo: thats why i have a 32bit pseudo toolchain made up of shell scripts
Deanjo: Again, way too much fucking around
cxo: i wasnt suggesting it as a benchmark
cxo: just as a stress test
Deanjo: Especially when building wine on a 64-bit system greatly varies from distro to distro
Deanjo: just uses the suse build service to create wine binaries
bkero: emerges wine
Deanjo: It's just so much simpler to use their build cluster :P
edman007: uses slackbuilds
edman007: Deanjo, lemme get some compile benches for you on my system....i'll do it as soon as this disk one finishes
Deanjo: Why do I want to see benchs on your machine?
chizu: Wine is easy enough to just build if you have the 32-bit libraries.
Deanjo: Not on all distro's chizu
Deanjo: http://wiki.winehq.org/WineOn64bit <---- as you can see it varies greatly distro to distro
cxo: so what if it varies?
cxo: everything bloody varies
