Phoronix IRC Log: 2008-12-02
aperson: BLARGH!
maligor: mm, these gpus are darned fast for 2d operations
maligor: ofcourse my methods are rather unscientific
GNU\colossus: maligor: which ones?
Deanjo: IIRC he's using ATI's
bkero: wants to try unloading dwarf fortress world generation onto it
bkero: Need to get the world generation source, and rewrite it in cuda.
Deanjo: It would be better to just hold off on that and do it in openCL
Deanjo: Why code for one vender when you can code for them all
bkero: Because OpenCL won't be out this year. :P
Deanjo: Ummm ya it will be
Deanjo: Specification is done
Roberth: nice, xrandr 1.2 support is underway for the nvidia linux driver!
Roberth: its high priority for them among the upcoming features!
michaellarabel: Roberth: Where you reading it?
bkero: Deanjo: It's waiting on legal reviews. DO you think they're going to be done before the end of next week? :P
Deanjo: It will be done before the end of the month bkero
bkero: Also there's no linux implementation of OpenGL even announced yet. It's OS X. :)
Roberth: michaellarabel: sent mail to that linux-bug thing at nvidia and asked abotu that and got a reply:)
bkero: Deanjo: Got a source for that?
bkero: *opencl
Roberth: michaellarabel: " Feel free to check back with us periodically, and we can provide you with an update."
Deanjo: http://www.macworld.com/article/136921/2008/11/opencl.html
cxo: Apple just wants their own DirectX 11
cxo: its like we are going back in time
Deanjo: heh, openCL was announced way before DX 11
cxo: We had huge monolithic applications that did everything, then we modularised, and now we are going back to unified API
cxo: CPU, DSP, GPU is all going to be used using the same API? wtf is going on
cxo: Deanjo, DX11 was announced way before Apple even existed!
Deanjo: uhhuh
michaellarabel: Roberth: Can you forward me what was said? michael at phoronix.com
Roberth: michaellarabel: sure
Roberth: michaellarabel: sent
cxo: feels poor
Deanjo: suggest cxo starts knocking off Salvation Army stands
cxo: I wonder if they take ATi HD4870s
Deanjo: IDK, there are a lot of them going for cheap right now in some LUG's
cxo: how much?
Deanjo: $150 or so
cxo: not bad
cxo: I paid $230 in October
Deanjo: A lot of OBO's
Milyardo: I'll take a 4850
Milyardo: I won't complain
Milyardo: Its an improvement over what I have now
Deanjo: vdpau has a lot of people switching back
cxo: They dont work on Linux
Deanjo: people patience only lasts so long
cxo: Unless you use redhat 6.0
Ivanovic: uhm, i use gentoo
cxo: Thats even worse
Deanjo: lol, well Ivanovic you have ALOT of patience :P
Ivanovic: and using the open drivers it is possible to normal work (eg with radeonhd) and with the latest fglrx i can even play videos and such
Ivanovic: that is with a 3850
cxo: yes, you will get the same performance as 1mb ISA card, sure
Ivanovic: with fglrx?
Ivanovic: no, it really works nicely over here
maligor: Deanjo, well, they're pretty simple stuff I've made
maligor: doesn't really work properly either
Ivanovic: that is i can play etqw at max details in 1920x1200
Ivanovic: what more do i need?
Deanjo: hidef porn
Ivanovic: the other linux games i own work nicely, too (ankh 1+2, penny arcade stuff, nwn, ...)
Ivanovic: Deanjo: uhm, that works nicely, too
Ivanovic: that is: my cpu ist fast enough to decode it
Deanjo: I'm talking porn filmed with a Red camera :P
Deanjo: 4900 x 2580 stuff :D
Ivanovic: ahh, okay
Ivanovic: for this my whimpy, old 24" dell is not big enough
Ivanovic: ;)
Deanjo: Ya, it's rough, I know :P
Ivanovic: that is: at least i got a devent samsung panel in it
Ivanovic: not one of those strange t+n film models...
Deanjo: I'm waiting for the HDMI --> neural implant adapters to come out
Ivanovic: hdmi?!?
Ivanovic: man, that is full of drm
Ivanovic: do you really want drm in your head?
Deanjo: The stuff in my head should be prevented from being copied :P
Ivanovic: :)
Ivanovic: for the wealth of humanity the stuff in my brain should better not make it out...
Ivanovic: ^^
Deanjo: Yup the world isn't ready for my twisted thoughts yet
Milyardo: ports SecuROM over to Deanjo's head
Deanjo: Anybody here ever try out Ridata DL media?
Milyardo: Now not even Deanjo can access it!
Deanjo: loves how DVD burners have write speeds that media can't be bought to use
maligor: mm?
maligor: they use different substrates I think
maligor: I tend to buy verbatim
cxo: I only care about 2 things. Lunch and Sleep. I dont give a shit about who makes my writable media
maligor: depends on how long you want to keep them
Milyardo: wonders why sex isn't on cxo's list
Milyardo: He's one of them! careful or you'll be assimilated
cxo: I dont care if Monday's blue, Tuesday's gray and Wednesday too, Thursday I dont care about you....
cxo: but http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxZuj77tUHk
Roberth: michaellarabel: didnt nvidia have some open source plans for this quarter?
bkero: They released some stuff for linux. Haven't heard about anything 'open source' by them.
cxo: why cant we just take the programming information by force?
cxo: People are always hacking stupid websites and what not. Even Obama's account got hacked by the guys at Verizon.
cxo: So why cant anyone put some otherwise wasted energy into hacking nvidia or ati for hardware documents
mattmatteh: cxo, the legal people would have too fun with that
cxo: what does that mean?
mattmatteh: lawsuits, IP
cxo: ?
cxo: Who do they file them against?
mattmatteh: i am not into the legal jargon...
mattmatteh: but its red tape that exist
cxo: There isnt
mattmatteh: just commenting on what you said
cxo: You cannot file a lawsuit against an unknown assailant, they can stop order the server hosting the private docs. but things spread too quickly on the internet
mattmatteh: i kinda see what you are saying
mattmatteh: not sure i agree that that is a good way
cxo: Desperate times call for desperate measures
mattmatteh: i didnt think it was desparate times ?
mattmatteh: unless you are only talking about nvidia
cxo: No, It wasn't desperate times. It _is_ desperate times
cxo: Hack them both
mattmatteh: cxo, i thought amd was opening up the docs ?
mattmatteh: after the legal jargon
cxo: No, they arent opening anything worth while
cxo: Michael just likes to have people on
mattmatteh: i thought they were, but still waiting on the legal stuff
cxo: Nah, thats just what they want you to think
mattmatteh: cxo, perhaps
mattmatteh: cxo, only the end result will tell
cxo: The end result being?
mattmatteh: cxo, but..... ati cards are more open than nvidia
mattmatteh: either we have the docs or we dont
cxo: thats not the result i want
cxo: Time is everything
mattmatteh: ohh, you want the docs now ?
cxo: If Nvidia gave you docs for 10yr old hardware, would you be happy? You seem to be happy about it when ATi did it
cxo: No,
cxo: I wanted the docs, 6 months ago
mattmatteh: cxo, well i still have older hardware
mattmatteh: and granted most has been revearsed engineered
mattmatteh: still helps
mattmatteh: and they do seem to be moving more toward open
cxo: I dont see that
cxo: Providing docs for old hardware is a spit in the face to me. Its like a patent. Its only worth some 20yrs, because it has no meaning after that duration
cxo: I think patents for computer technology should be reduced to 1yr
mattmatteh: cxo, agreed on the patents
mattmatteh: cxo, i see the docs as a step in the right direction.
mattmatteh: cxo, if they dont continue that, or stop, then yes, it could be like a spit in the face
cxo: You dont seem to understand, its already being done
cxo: Only cards with decent support are the pre r500 cards
cxo: and that support is pathetic compared to fglrx
mattmatteh: i have 3 older cards, all 3 work fine with open source drivers
mattmatteh: except one has a weird gamma issue with xv
cxo: Dude, my toothbrush also works fine
Deanjo: Being open in no "real-life" way guarantees great support nor extended support
mattmatteh: yeah, i agree with that
cxo: we are not talking about if something works or not.
mattmatteh: cxo, perhaps i am missing something
cxo: Even the most closed source proprietary piece of shit Texas instruments north bridge will *work* on linux
cxo: it works like shit, but it works
mattmatteh: cxo, of the 3 radeon cards i have, i dont have any problems
cxo: I am not disagreeing
mattmatteh: cxo, but i also dont play demanding 3d games either
cxo: We are simply talking about different things
Deanjo: shitty code is shitty code no matter it's openess. Incompetence knows no bounds
cxo: Yes
Deanjo: Thankfully, nvidia has a crew of competent developers on staff.
cxo: Oh i know, I have first hand experience with that
cxo: A close friend of mine applied for a job at ATi to write Linux drivers, and he was so insulted by the way the interviewer undertook the interview, he just walked out. He has been working for Nvidia for years now.
cxo: Friends of friends that know people at ATi say the work ethics are completely different
Deanjo: Ati's driver development has always been a weak point
Deanjo: It wasn't until recently that even their windows drivers were remotely tolerable
cxo: its still crap
Deanjo: I said remotely
cxo: ok
Deanjo: I see now they are having issues with the Vista drivers bluescreening
cxo: i have more problems
cxo: i get green/black checker squares on objects sometimes
cxo: i thought it was heat, but i took off the case, up'd the fan profile, and the card runs cooler than anything in the box, but it still has the same problem
cxo: i also get corruption when Alt+Tab'ing a game
cxo: but thats random, it only happens sometimes
cxo: ATi just makes shit, shit hardware, shit software, just plain shit
cxo: ATi hasnt made anything worth mentioning since the Radeon 9700Pro
cxo: which was actually famous, because the 9800 was shit :)
cxo: But then again, it doesnt mean Nvidia is any better. They have fallen into the same strategy as Intel. They increase performance by tiny bits, but price goes up quite a bit on each new release
cxo: Last card worth mentioning from Nvidia is the Geforce 256
cxo: at least if i was writing the book
Deanjo: I don't know about that, the GF 4 was a big jump over the 3, GF6 series was a huge jump in performance and the G92 chip made another huge jump
cxo: i dont think so, geforce 4 shit, that was Nvidia's problem years, with the 440 TI and what not
Deanjo: The 4200 was a huge jump
Deanjo: I hope your not confusing the 440 MX
cxo: Tomshardware had a nice article about Nvidia's history
cxo: check it out
Deanjo: I read it a while back
cxo: but i couldnt care less about anyone's history
cxo: everyone has problems
cxo: learning from it is what counts
cxo: Porsche made some stupid cars in their time, but they also made DTM champs
Deanjo: Take that back!!!!
Deanjo: Porsche 4 ever
cxo: what about the 944?
cxo: Even porsche fans throw up when they see those 3 numbers together
Deanjo: In my world that never existed :P
cxo: yeah, ok
Deanjo: There is only the 911 (well the 959 too)
cxo: What I like about Porsche is, the idea of putting the engine in the back was a stupid idea, it always was, it always is, it just never works on a track. Porsche tried every damn thing in the world to make it work. In the 80s they were making the front bumpers out of lead even to balance the weight. But now, 50yrs from the first design, they have perfected it. 4wd was the cure to weight distribution, they stood by their guns and they succeeded. I r
cxo: espect that
Deanjo: For me personally the 911's shape is just a timeless design
cxo: The 911 killed more businessmen, than prostitute with AIDS
Deanjo: lol
cxo: "No Lift" two words burned into anyone who has driven a 911 fast and is still alive. Let go of the accelerator on a turn and you will end up a tree
cxo: Putting the ignition closer to the door, so that the le mans drivers could get that extra few seconds, were the quirky things porsche did
Deanjo: Hell they did that in old Ford pickups :P
Deanjo: brb
cxo: But I will never forgive Porsche for killing James Dean. He bought the 550 just as a time pass while he waited for his Lotus, and it killed him
Deanjo: lol, James Dean
cxo: Problem with buying a porsche today is, you have to get the 911, or else you'll look cheap
cxo: that wasnt a problem in the 70s, 80s
Deanjo: The Boxster isn't a bad looking car
Deanjo: for a woman
cxo: might work if you are gay too
Deanjo: It's porches, miata
cxo: Mercedes's SLK 230
cxo: If i was forced to buy a new 2-door roadster, under $100k, it would be a Honda S2000
Deanjo: Seen too many rusted out honda's to hold my interest
cxo: i mean under $50k
cxo: can get a 911 for $100k
cxo: The S2000 is amazing, you have to drive one to know what i'm talking about
Deanjo: The wife's SSR cures my topless needs :D
cxo: I'd rather walk
Deanjo: BTW I have driven a S2000, didn't think it was all that
cxo: you are the minority
cxo: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_S2000#Reviews_and_awards
Deanjo: Heh, I'm a guy that enjoys low end torque
cxo: how low?
Deanjo: Sub 3000
Deanjo: The lower the better
cxo: thats low
cxo: i like to hear her scream first
Deanjo: To me, "there is no replacement for displacement"
Deanjo: Rice rockets are not my thing
Deanjo: Bikes on the other hand....
cxo: the power band on a R1 starts at like 6k rpm
cxo: redline is 13k rpm haha
Deanjo: I remember my buddies old RX7 and it's "pseudo redline" , just a pleasant chime from the car as he hit it
Deanjo: I used to chuckle at that
Deanjo: Now his old 442 was a beast
Deanjo: Rusted out, dented, paint missing everywhere but man did that thing kick ass when it came to a redlight drag
Deanjo: Opened a few eyes lol
Deanjo: He's got a really nice 80's Monte Carlo SS he's been fixing up now
cxo: I'm not crazy about american cars
Deanjo: We each have our likes and dislikes
cxo: I like the small block v8 engines, but the cars as a whole, the looks, suspension, interior, together i dont like it
Deanjo: NVIDIA 180.11 lol, can I call driver releases or what
cxo: 11/26/2008
Deanjo: Ya that's the build date
cxo: nope.
cxo: where the fuk are my ati drivers!
Deanjo: Still on the roadmap stage
cxo: damn them
cxo: damn them and their mothers
michaellarabel: So OpenSolaris 2008.11 is out today...
cxo: Who uses opensolaris?
michaellarabel: Just yesterday though I was told I was under embargo for OpenSolaris 2008.11 until the 10th of December... but then they go ahead and release it today.
Deanjo: I'm sure Jade would have a conspiracy theory for ya on that michaellarabel
cxo: michael likes embargos
Deanjo: wonders why nobody in the linux world has come up with a dvd burning app that can do simultaneous burning of different DVD's on different drives
cxo: because its called a for(); loop
cxo: just open up k3b twice already
Deanjo: Heh the k3b buffer does not like that
cxo: plus, how many people have a dvd burner in their pcs
cxo: i havent had an optical drive in my box for half a decade now
Deanjo: all most everybody
cxo: growisofs then
Deanjo: Na nero works fine
Deanjo: It burns fine with multiple instances opened up
cxo: ok but no one uses opensolaris
bkero: Deanjo: Because anybody serious about burning just uses multiple instances of cd record :P
bkero: I don't even have optical drives in my laptops. I just use an external on the very rare occasion that I actually need to burn something.
Deanjo: Ya, uhhuh, like I'll tell a bunch of people on a network to use cdrecord
redeeman: "on a network" ?
Deanjo: Not everybody is a cli masochist
cxo: xterm is gui!
Deanjo: lol
bkero: Masochist?
redeeman: gui isn't some magical marvellous usability invention
redeeman: it's only easier and more convenient in a few very specific cases
cxo: a short form for massage therapist
cxo: yes, like talking even
cxo: sometimes you just need to bitch slap that hoe
Deanjo: I've got a solution 1/2 coded up anyways
cxo: 1/2 coded even
cxo: Do you think if i install apt-get, and setup the ubuntu repos, i might be able to upgrade from fedora to ubuntu?
Deanjo: No that installs Vista
Deanjo: The opensource edition :P
Deanjo: wonders if they will ever fix apt-get
cxo: whats wrong with it?
Deanjo: apt-get install pr0n doesn't work
cxo: really? i thought it did
redeeman: but porn-get does
redeeman: don't you remember that one?
cxo: yeah we recommend porn-get to new users
redeeman: http://www.lesbian.mine.nu/
cxo: wants to click, but hesitates
redeeman: don't worry
cxo: whats .nu?
redeeman: a top level domain?
cxo: that looks suspicious
Deanjo: apt-get install whisky-canadian-blend doesn't work either
bkero: lesbian was based off potato, wasn't it?
cxo: whats a lesbian?
Deanjo: Carpet muncher :D
redeeman: bkero: probably, i saw it first, when potato was current stable
bkero: That was...last decade?
redeeman: around the turn
cxo: what about a carpet cleaner?
Deanjo: A lawnmower works better
bkero: What about plebian?
bkero: Only free or cheap software.
cxo: is hungry
Deanjo: ate cxo's stash of pringles
cxo: aha! but i bet you dont know where the cookies are!
Deanjo: nope but I did find your closet full of pr0n
Deanjo: Dwarf fetish eh?
cxo: dammit man, i was saving those
Deanjo: I like how you laminated the pages
cxo: I'm totally going to get you back. The Italian edition was hard to come by even
Deanjo: Try finding pr0n video's with Ukrainian sub titles
Deanjo: Now that's a real bitch to find
cxo: you mean english subtitles for ukranian pr0n
Deanjo: No other way around
cxo: why would you want ukranian subtitles?
Deanjo: It was my fist language :D
cxo: do you have a ukranian girl friend?
Deanjo: *first
cxo: was it the first language you got laid in too?
Deanjo: Plus what if my grandpa wants to watch it :P
Deanjo: You kids nowdays never thinking of your elders
bkero: Spanish here 8)
cxo: ok gonzales
Deanjo: I actually did see one japanese movie that had english dubbed and Ukrainian subtitles
Deanjo: funny as hell
cxo: asian orgasms are scary
cxo: its like they are dieing
Deanjo: I get a kick out of the censored Japanese porn
cxo: yeah, like whats the point?
cxo: do they play it on day time kids television or something?
Deanjo: I have no idea
cxo: (Do you know ncurses?))
Deanjo: "Let's get porn so we can watch blur"
Deanjo: *sigh* "Couldnt they have ported something worth while? Like Crysis, Red Alert 3, Far Cry ? " some people have no clue
cxo: Who the fuk plays Jets and Pistols?
cxo: wtf kind of game is that even
Deanjo: Old time side scroller shooter fanatics I guess
Deanjo: I've got my old Turbo-Duo console for those games when I want a fix
redeeman: what graphics card is capable of running nexuiz with full effects etc at 1920x1200?
cxo: something like a 9800gt
Deanjo: 8800GT
redeeman: 9800gtx+ cant
cxo: 9800gtx is shit
redeeman: worse than 9800gt ?
cxo: yes
redeeman: that's weird
cxo: look at a benchmark if you dont believe me
cxo: tomshardware.com
redeeman: i default to believing in weird stuff when it's with nvidia
cxo: at least its better than being completely faithless with ati
cxo: Even Deanjo's 8800gt is faster than a 9800gtx
cxo: is looking at a crysis benchmark right now
Deanjo: Well the 8800GT's and the 9800GT's are the same card
Deanjo: die shrink and tri sli support on the newer versions of it
Deanjo: That's the only difference
cxo: its about 10% faster on benchmarks
Deanjo: Alot of them are just rebranded 8800GT's
cxo: but anyhow, my 4870 pwns all your weak asses
redeeman: cxo: different clock speed
Deanjo: That's probably from the slightly higher clock rates
redeeman: lol yeah right
redeeman: cxo: without drivers, your 4870 doesn't even pwn my core2 using software rasterizer
cxo: dude you need to be packing dual 8800gt to mess with me
redeeman: lol
redeeman: cxo: btw, i cant find that comparison on tomshardware
cxo: click on charts at the top
cxo: then select Q3 2008
cxo: then choose your benchmark
Deanjo: thinks his old voodoo would compete with cxo's 4870 at this time
cxo: here http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/gaming-graphics-charts-q3-2008/benchmarks,30.html
cxo: if you want the lay man's edition its guru3d
Deanjo: refrains from pointing out how bad Toms charts are
cxo: http://www.guru3d.com/category/vga_charts_crysis/
redeeman: i chose one at random, and it didn't include 9800gt lol
cxo: just look at the 8800gt, and add 10% to the fps
redeeman: lol
cxo: its the same processor
redeeman: but 9800gtx+ isn't the same as 9800gtx
redeeman: it's clocked somewhat higher
cxo: so where do you play your card? 9800gt > 8800gt > 9800gtx
cxo: ^place
redeeman: lol?
cxo: the +sign is just to make it sell
cxo: trick the n00bs
cxo: its still the same old stuff
redeeman: well it's abit more than that, it does have higher clock by default
redeeman: but sure, you can ofcourse do that manually too
cxo: guru3d shows the 9800gtx+ is 1fps faster than the 9800gtx at Ghost Recon
redeeman: i saw other benchmarks that showed it faster than that
redeeman: but yeah, it's just higher clocked
redeeman: and 55nm
redeeman: instead of 65
Deanjo: Same clocked 8800GT's and 9800GT's are identical in speed
cxo: at 1920x1200 you need a card with lots of ram
redeeman: undoubtedly
redeeman: Deanjo: actually, isn't there like ~10 more shaders unlocked on 9800gtx than 8800gt?
Deanjo: 640k should be enough cxo :P
cxo: each frame is 2.3mp
Deanjo: I said 9800GT's
Deanjo: not GTX's
redeeman: oh
cxo: which is almost twice 1280x1024
redeeman: i thought you compared those to 9800gtx
cxo: who said anything about a 9800gtx?
cxo: I think you need to start buying japanese motorcycle magazines, you'll get this number business a lot better
redeeman: it was a pretty loose statement given this discussion
cxo: like the FZ1 is slower than a F1, but its got an extra letter
redeeman: either way, i still don't see any evidence that 9800gt is faster than 9800gtx+
cxo: dude, the 8800gt pwns the 9800gtx+ even
cxo: http://www.guru3d.com/category/vga_charts_graw_2_fuel_war/
redeeman: are you on drugs?
cxo: lots!
redeeman: or have you not learned to look at numbers yet?
cxo: i've got a cold
redeeman: what is biggest number? 88 or 74?
redeeman: 82 or 65?
cxo: 1280x1024, 89fps 9800gtx+, 93fps 8800gt
cxo: pwnage!
redeeman: lol so fucking what? that's a lower resolution than i've used for a decade
redeeman: look at 2560x1600 and im interrested
redeeman: at worst case ill accept 1920x1200
cxo: 9800gx2 if you can put up with the size
cxo: that was the card i was going to buy, before that fatal day
redeeman: i cant
redeeman: i have a 9800gtx+ because i took it from a shelf
redeeman: but i will not buy a new nvidia thing
redeeman: :P
cxo: where are these "shelf"s
cxo: do they take trade ins?
redeeman: on the "abandoned hardware that's too giant to put in ordinary sized computers" shelf
redeeman: one thing is scavenging unused hardware, another thing is purchasing new nvidia shite
cxo: you got something that should last you until larrabee comes out
cxo: so chillax
redeeman: except it cannot play nexuiz
cxo: thats a fag game
cxo: isnt it just quake3?
redeeman: lol
redeeman: it's based more on quake1 than quake3 :P
cxo: with different maps and weapons
redeeman: and it's not as faggy as buying a 4870 and whining about it constantly
cxo: cries silently
Deanjo: has big doubts about larrabee
redeeman: why?
Deanjo: When intel decides to do graphics they have a great history of under delivering
redeeman: lol
redeeman: they have never attempted anything quite like this before
Deanjo: Yet another good indicator to reserve judgement
redeeman: besides, the newer GMAs are quite nice
Deanjo: Come on, even the fastest GMA has a hardtime keeping up to cpu rendering
aperson: loves trolling here
cxo: Anything is possible if you throw enough money at it
cxo: Unless of course you are an insanely ugly person
Deanjo: I can see larrabee coming in at a GF7 level
redeeman: Deanjo: oh really? well how come nvidia cant even do compositing like a year old GMA then?
redeeman: why don't they just fall back to software? :P
cxo: the igp from ati and nvidia are faster than that, so i doubt it
redeeman: Deanjo: what could you possibly base that on?
cxo: the larrabee will be either blow your mammas knickers off or it will suck balls
redeeman: it's about as substantiated as the answers from amd as to when documentation will be out "real soon now!"
Deanjo: By simply looking how effecient x86 cores are now at rendering redeeman
cxo: i dont think it has a chance to be tranny
redeeman: that's a huge difference deanjo
Deanjo: Not really
redeeman: have you seen what they are speccing larrabee at?
Deanjo: Yup
cxo: what about 30x x86s
cxo: suckage x 30 = pwnage
Deanjo: That still falls short of a GPU cxo
redeeman: you are forgetting vital stuff
redeeman: like much bigger memory bandwidth and better latency
cxo: ok, what about old paint boxes? they are just x86s arent they?
redeeman: and the new vector instructions
cxo: If anyone can do it, it would be intel ok
Deanjo: Vector instructions are nothing new
redeeman: that's true
cxo: Cell Power!
Deanjo: Your CPU has vector instructions as well
cxo: Tungsten is said to be writing a gallium driver for the Cell
redeeman: Deanjo: 128bit yes
redeeman: not nearly as powerful
redeeman: they are speccing larrabee at 2 teraflops
redeeman: that's a lot more than my c2q
cxo: hd4870 is 1 terra
redeeman: 1.2
Deanjo: I'm not saying it will for sure suck, I'm just saying I reserve judgment until it's actually demonstrated
cxo: we are not a political party, we are here to burn people on a stake
Deanjo: We all know how good things can look on paper and then when it comes to execution it fails
cxo: you have to have a judgment
cxo: just remember, suckage x 30 = pwnage
Deanjo: lol
Deanjo: seems to recall pwnage talk when the p4's came out too
redeeman: lol
cxo: 423 pwn'd!
cxo: 478 sucked balls
cxo: 478b they got to 3.6ghz!
Deanjo: P4's sucked balls through their entire lifespan
cxo: when was the last time you saw a stock 3.6ghz intel processor?
redeeman: yet still slower than an athlon-xp 1.6ghz
redeeman: im in the process of upgrading my router
redeeman: from 1.8ghz p4 to 500mhz geode
cxo: you suck
cxo: mine is a 133mhz mips
Deanjo: One of the athlon based geodes redeeman ?
redeeman: i don't know
redeeman: i think it says it's i586 lol
redeeman: so yeah probably
Deanjo: If it's a newer one it probably is
redeeman: but i run i686 kernel and libc on it fine
Deanjo: Ya it sounds like a athlon based one
redeeman: there are non-athlon based geodes?
Deanjo: There was
redeeman: anyway it's a nice upgrade
cxo: call the law! Deanjo is talking bull shlackin
cxo: geode was always an AMD chip, it just wasnt called AMD back then
Deanjo: Umm no, the geode was a national semiconductor chip before that
Deanjo: There are two flavors of the geode, the GeodeNX and the GeodeGX2
redeeman: mine is LX
Deanjo: Ya that would be the newer ones
cxo: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geode_(processor)
redeeman: that's atleast what springs to mind
cxo: you are off the hook
Deanjo: http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,2845,1599384,00.asp
cxo: redeeman, why dont you just downclock your athlon and take off the sink
redeeman: it has no heatsink
redeeman: lol
redeeman: it doesn't need one
cxo: ok
Deanjo: "On Monday, AMD announced the revamped AMD Geode line, which uses the brand name and core architecture AMD picked up from National Semiconductor in August 2003"
redeeman: i wish intel made atom boards with the mobile version of the chipset
redeeman: like they use in the "netbooks"
Deanjo: It will come
Deanjo: They also have to get rid of that "PCI slot only" bullshit too
cxo: i wish my balls were licked more often
cxo: woops that didnt come out right
cxo: or maybe it did? hmmm
Deanjo: Like the old joke goes..."Why does a dog lick it's nuts?" "Because it can"
cxo: is thirsty
Deanjo: Wanna drink out of the toilet too now cxo?
cxo: go touch your 8800gt
Deanjo: I let my harem of supermodels do that for me cxo
cxo: you mean, after i'm done with them???
cxo: gross, sloppy seconds
redeeman: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/12/02/intel_denies_core_i7_tbl_issues/
cxo: tlb
cxo: not tbl
redeeman: i didn't create the url :P
Deanjo: Ya they say it was correct via the BIOS before released. Makes you wonder how much loss in performance that fix cost
cxo: my athlon x2 pwns, it doesnt even have a tlb
Deanjo: http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/GX1/index.html
redeeman: Intel spokesman George Alfs tells El Reg the incriminating paragraph relates to a Core 2 Duo issue which was fixed via a BIOS update before the launch of the Core i7.
redeeman: so apparently, if that is true, the issue was on core2, and not nehalem
cxo: songbird 1.0 is out!!!!!!!!!!!
cxo: !!!!!!!!!!!!!1111oneoneone
