Deanjo: nVidia Corporation GeForce 8800 GT [ Screen Resolution: 8000x1200 pixels / 24 Bits | DRI: Yes ] | Sound Card: C-Media Electronics Inc CMI8788 [Oxygen HD Audio]
redeeman: Deanjo: seems seagate has a firmware fix for the 1.5tb disks now
redeeman: the question remains though, do we dare buy the disks?
Deanjo: As always, I'll give it a few months and wait and see.
redeeman: unfortunately i cannot wait that long
redeeman: for tax reasons i will buy my fileserver this year, but also, i only have enough space to last about this year out
Deanjo: Well good news is I guess is that HD's are nowhere as expensive as they used to be now days
Deanjo: or ram for that matter
redeeman: well that has always been true, except for the very first generation i assume
Deanjo: Well you don't see $500 harddrives anymore
redeeman: but i only plan for 4gb ram for the fileserver
redeeman: would have preferred 8, but the intel board only has 2 slots
Deanjo: I remember paying that for a 2.1 gig
Deanjo: Only 2 slots? What kind of board are you using?
redeeman: DG43NB
redeeman: well i haven't bought it yet, but that's my current plan
redeeman: and then some sata_sil24 extra sata controllers
Deanjo: Ahh, just using a desktop board
redeeman: well yeah
redeeman: i see no reason to go all fancy
Deanjo: Making a "poor man's" server :D
redeeman: lol
redeeman: i'd rather call it a rich mans server
redeeman: since using cheap hardware allows me to retain my money
Deanjo: lol true
redeeman: and ill bet it's every bit as good as stuff costing 10 times as much
Deanjo: That board doesn't support 4 Gig chips though?
redeeman: well.. bestbuy is 2gb elcheapo ddr
redeeman: which ill use
redeeman: and since it will ONLY be a fileserver
redeeman: serving practically only me
redeeman: i don't see a major problem
redeeman: the reason i care for much ram is that the xfsprogs has been known to like eating ram
Deanjo: 4 GB should be lots though for even that
redeeman: yeah not really
redeeman: depends on how many inodes you have
Deanjo: Well it is for personal use isn't it?
redeeman: well sorta mixed personal/business
redeeman: but yeah, i won't have insane amounts of inodes
redeeman: i will be mostly dealing with files in the ~170-16GB area
Deanjo: Ya you should be ok then
Deanjo: Been playing around with susestudio for the last week. I've got to say that they have done a far better job then rpath. Really dead simple to use.
Deanjo: They got a whole crapload of 16-way systems for it and man them suckers are fast building appliances
Deanjo: OMG, "I got some bad news guys. The only virtual environment that supports 64 bit guests is Server 2008 with Hyper-V." ...... MS idiot
redeeman: where?
Deanjo: Oh on one of my mailing lists
redeeman: i trust you will ridicule his stupidity to the apropriate degree?
Deanjo: lol and how
redeeman: im sure you can come up with something
Deanjo: Ya, was being sarcastic :P
Deanjo: According to this moron VirtualPC is the only "real" solution for virtualization
Deanjo: All of this started when I said Asus fucked up a BIOS implementation (AMD-V is disabled even though it says it's enabled in the bios)
redeeman: loool
Deanjo: FFS Amd even provides bloody utils on their site that proves the fact
Deanjo: I even made him a picture to prove it http://img519.imageshack.us/my.php?image=noamdvxd6.jpg
cxo: space man!!!!
cxo: always wanted to go into space man!
