Phoronix IRC Log: 2008-08-27

Ivanovic: moin
RobbieAB: Morn
Ivanovic: michaellarabel: any plans on providing a pandora test once it is available?
Ivanovic: (that is they *plan* to open pandor for preorders late september and plan shipping of the first series (3000 devices) for middle of november
michaellarabel: Ivanovic: Not sure
Ivanovic: michaellarabel: i know that eg EvilDragon (the german distributor) is really friendly in those regards and if you ask him for a "press devices" for review, he will probably lend you one
Ivanovic: at least he already did so several times for the GP2X and I don't think he will behave any different for the pandora
GNU\colossus: ED rocks, yeah =)
redeeman: he also has really great service in general
redeeman: 2 years ago(i believe it was) just before christmas i bought a gp2x from him, but the SD slot was broken, so he expressed a new to me before i had returned the old one, in time for christmas (it was a present)
redeeman: im gonna preoder the pandora once it's possible :)
Ivanovic: yeah, ed is great
Ivanovic: that is: he modded my gp2x f100 mk2 for me (modding as in "put a dpad in and place the stick click onto an extra button at the back)
Oli```: What does everybody here get in gtkperf -a -c 100? And what graphics card is that score on?
Deanjo: http://reviewage.co.uk/content/view/33/1/ :O
Deanjo: Oli```, http://pastebin.com/m1a0fd3ed
d2kx: Phenom 45nm @ 4 GHz? wtf > fake
mha: you fail.
Deanjo: Why do you say that d2kx ?
Oli```: Deanjo: blimey.. I'm at 9.64 with a 8800GTS (on the 177.68 driver). What CPU are you on?
mha: he says that wtf is bigger than fake.
Deanjo: phenom 9850
Oli```: Marginally better than my 4800+ then =) mkay
Deanjo: Well the 4800+ has the same core speed, cache is the only thing really different
cxo: $ gtkperf -a -c 100
cxo: bash: gtkperf: command not found
Deanjo: you might want to install it first :P
Oli```: cxo: http://gtkperf.sourceforge.net/
cxo: got to go to work, will try it when i get back
Oli```: The phenom is miles ahead of the X2s
Deanjo: Not when it comes to apps such as gtkperf
Deanjo: Did you apply the performance tweaks?
Oli```: Yeah
Oli```: There is also RAM speed and bus bandwidth to consider... AM2 improved on 939 by some margin
Oli```: kicks his stupid DDR1
Oli```: Oh and I'm running at 3840*1200 with compiz - That might make a difference
mha: oi oi oi
Deanjo: Ya that might make a difference, I'm just running Kwin4 effects
Deanjo: Ohhhh michaellarabel, KDE 3.5.10 is out
michaellarabel: Deanjo, I know
Deanjo: k
GNU\colossus: the changelog is very un-impressive though
GNU\colossus: not really newsworthy
michaellarabel: Yeah, that's why I didn't make a news posting out of it
GNU\colossus: michaellarabel: have you ever considered benchmarking USB/IEEE1394/SATA/Ethernet-thruput for mainboard reviews?
michaellarabel: To some extent, yes.
Deanjo: I still say we need a floppy benchmark :P
GNU\colossus: imho, that's make a whole lot more sense than benchmarking various games, becasue that's a thing the boards would actually differ (potentially) much from each other
GNU\colossus: that'd*
redeeman: perhaps you should consider that the changelog IS impressive
redeeman: seeing as though there are no bigger troubles than a few pdf bugs
GNU\colossus: yeah, kde3 is very, very mature, and i'm happy with that
GNU\colossus: however, there are some minor features missing from componentns that I'd really like to see making it into it
GNU\colossus: (like TLS auth for Kopete's XMPP component)
aravind: when I run sh ati-driver*.run --buildpkg Fedora/F9, I get error: %changelog entries must start with *. Any one know how I can get the rpms generated
ufoman: hey there
aravind: running a 2.6.15.14 kernel
aravind: X server is 1.5.0 RC 5
ufoman: maybe someone could help me with color depth problem on nv driver?
happ1: Hi. Just like to say, got E8400 based PC (built) thanks your Core2 Duo E8400 review. Nice one 8-)
michaellarabel: open-source RV770 has its first triangle :)
Ivanovic: wow
Ivanovic: hopes the specs (and with them the code) are made public at XDS
Ivanovic: :)
michaellarabel: Not at XDS :(
michaellarabel: Bridgman isn't going to XDS and now Deucher might not be going to XDS in order to spend the time instead pushing out this code into a public repo
Ivanovic: :(
Ivanovic: but in time for XDs, right?
michaellarabel: Possibly during XDS, yes.
Ivanovic: would be really great
Ivanovic: is really looking forward to being able to watch videos (full screen) with open drivers on his rv670 based card
michaellarabel: Hopefully XDS ends up being nice
ufoman: hi
ufoman: anyone willing to help me with nv driver?
rbrett: WRT XDS, seems the attendance list is dwindling, but I hope it's still informative and productive.
Ivanovic: rbrett: less people does not mean that it won't be productive
Ivanovic: in fact even if it was just 5 people meeting it would still be very productive
cxo: ufoman, I think there is a channel on IRC for open source nvidia support, but what are you fighting with, we maybe able to help
Ivanovic: since in RL you can solve a lot more stuff in by far less time
rbrett: Ivanovic: but less people mean less videos, and less procrastination by me, wait. maybe that's a good thing :P
Ivanovic: :)
Ivanovic: in general this summit is meant for the devs to more easily coordinate stuff and exchange knowledge
cxo: michaellarabel, how do you know the open source driver can draw its first triangle?
Ivanovic: if anyone outside of those learns something from it, it is just a bonus
Deanjo: LIES!!!! They drink beer Ivanovic
cxo: yeah Ivanovic
Ivanovic: Deanjo: uhm, have i said *what* they coordinate?
Deanjo: lol
Deanjo: beer delivery?
Ivanovic: Deanjo: they might as well coordinate free beer partys
cxo: it usually ends up like that
cxo: then at like 1am at the strip club, someone will bring up work out of the blue
rbrett: " nothing involved with X should ever be unable to find a bar"
Deanjo: I hate when that happens cxo
Ivanovic: (beside this, the main beer event is probably still fosdem as being probably the biggest open source conference in europe (the only place where you get really good beer))
rbrett: from the #dri-devel topic
Ivanovic: ^^
cxo: tell me about it
Deanjo: bugzilla and lap dances should never get together
Ivanovic: see that it is currently 1:15 over here...
cxo: its pretty bad i'm like 10yrs younger than all my colleagues
cxo: they always say "We are living vicariously through you"
Ivanovic: Deanjo: sometimes this stuff helps
Ivanovic: have you ever seen password: swordfish?
Ivanovic: ;)
Deanjo: lol
michaellarabel: cxo, because I talk to AMD
Ivanovic: she's good, isn't she?
Ivanovic: ;)
cxo: that seems strange to me
Deanjo: How come I never catch a woman sunbathing topless when I'm hacking dammit!
Ivanovic: (man, this was by far the best scene in the movie)
Deanjo: I should sue hollywood for false advertising
cxo: Why does AMD tell you what they are doing with the open source driver, before the code is in git?
Ivanovic: Deanjo: because where you are hacking, tehre is no sun
Ivanovic: women tend to not sunbath in cellars
Ivanovic: ^^
Deanjo: Hell I don't even get to see a seal laying on the ice :P
cxo: polar bear maybe
michaellarabel: cxo: So I can start typing information and know what's going on
Ivanovic: Deanjo: is there any ice (beside the little in your whiskey glass) in your cellar?
Deanjo: But of course
Ivanovic: but not enough to attract a seal
cxo: That all sounds very insider-dealing like to me
Deanjo: Must be because of the polar bears
cxo: do you "talk" to nvidia too?
cxo: where do you live Ivanovic ?
Ivanovic: their fur is probably great to warm one of the toppless ladies if ever one should climb down the 500 stairs into your cellar
Ivanovic: cxo: in the home country of beer
Deanjo: egypt?
Deanjo: :P
Ivanovic: Deanjo: nah, in the home country of *good* beer
cxo: ah our winters make your winters look like summer
cxo: If you see a guy walking around in shorts in the middle of January in Berlin, you know he's Canadian
Ivanovic: cxo: in berlin?
Deanjo: thinks michaellarabel should add cpu cache sizes to the System hardware summary in PTS
Ivanovic: no, he is from siberia!
Ivanovic: ;)
Ivanovic: (that is by far more likely than meeting someone from canada there)
cxo: siberia pfft, we go to siberia for vacation
Ivanovic: cxo: yeah, winter vacation
Ivanovic: ^^
cxo: its not even august and the mornings have started getting cold
Deanjo: Hell, us Canucks consider anything above -30C Bikini weather :P
Ivanovic: considers everything below +15°C freezing cold...
cxo: i saw a girl running in a bikini top, and shorts yesterday
cxo: it was 14degC outside
Ivanovic: (and in germany it is 3/4 of the year freezing cold and the rest of the time just barely above)
cxo: in Canada is -15degC 3/4 of the year
Deanjo: lol
Ivanovic: cxo: and now you know why i am not in canada
Ivanovic: ;)
Ivanovic: prefers caribic weather
Ivanovic: it is just that the internet access over there is rather flacky...
cxo: i'm gonna move to europe one of these days
Ivanovic: at least on the nice and quiet beaches
cxo: carry a Sat phone
Ivanovic: cxo: yeah, this would be an option
Deanjo: It gets so damn cold in Canada during the winter we have to put block heaters on our liquid cooling systems in our computers.
Ivanovic: but you know, there is a small problem with this:
Ivanovic: my bank account lacks the millions needed for this
cxo: haha
cxo: Ivanovic, maybe take an old merc and drive it there
Deanjo: We reverse our peltier elements during the winter :D
Ivanovic: cxo: this sounds too much like work
Ivanovic: i am a student, i tend to run away when i just think that something like work might be close
Ivanovic: ;)
cxo: heh. the pain has yet to begin
Deanjo: Man it's been a bad summer for linux security
Ivanovic: Deanjo: still better than for windows security
Ivanovic: was laughing today about the ISS where they had viruses on some of their systems
Deanjo: I don't know about that for this summer anyways
Ivanovic: http://www.golem.de/0808/62017.html
Deanjo: rootkits, the whole debian screwup, redhat getting hacked, etc etc
Ivanovic: they had a worm on some of their laptops which is normally used to spie on MMO account data
cxo: doesnt redhat run SELinux and all that mambo
Ivanovic: Deanjo: there is stuff that is a lot more concerning
Ivanovic: eg the DNS security probs
cxo: if the NASA is gonna run winhoes on their boxes then we got bigger problems
Deanjo: They have been running it for years
Ivanovic: cxo: it is not only the nasa
Ivanovic: from what i heard even eg in german tanks windows2000 is running on some board systems
cxo: i thought you guys has suse
Ivanovic: and i won't be suprised if comparable stuff takes place at the us army
Deanjo: I do run suse cxo
Ivanovic: cxo: yeah, and suse (novell bought them) now deal closely with MS...
cxo: well you keep your friends close...
cxo: and your enemies...
Ivanovic: and backstab your enemies while hugging them
cxo: dog eat dog
Deanjo: The "sky is falling" effect never took place like all the screaming was about
cxo: money is the root of all evil my granmama used to say
Ivanovic: Deanjo: it happend
cxo: the sky fell?
Deanjo: how?
Ivanovic: Deanjo: just noone who could report it survived
Ivanovic: ;)
cxo: what about that little chicken
cxo: i thought he hid somewhere
Deanjo: uhhuh, must of been in with Reiser murder too
Ivanovic: murder is a little strong
Ivanovic: let's call it "external influcted suicide"
Deanjo: OK accidental strangulation
cxo: fetish isnt it
Deanjo: "I slipped my hands, fell on her throat, and because I had crazy glue on them I couldn't let go..."
cxo: magnets
Ivanovic: nah, wrong
Deanjo: must of been
cxo: his bracelet had magnets in it
Deanjo: Or a micro blackhole located in her throat
Ivanovic: "i was in hypnosis by her and she ordered me to strangle her"
cxo: there are two places you dont fuk with in linux, vfs and vmm
cxo: they are a different bread of hackers
Ivanovic: michaellarabel: what happened to the freedesktop.org server?
cxo: breed
Ivanovic: eg http://gitweb.freedesktop.org/?p=xorg/driver/xf86-video-radeonhd;a=summary ain't working
michaellarabel: Ivanovic: been bad all day
Ivanovic: (the other git webinterfaces ain't working either, working at all that is
cxo: just git clone it man
michaellarabel: cxo: Git is down too
cxo: i guess those rootkits are running wild now
michaellarabel: I've been working on an R500 comparison and have been trying to use git all day
Ivanovic: ugh
Ivanovic: that is sad
cxo: r500? HD26xx?
Ivanovic: i hope it is up again soon so that we get a nice comparision
Ivanovic: cxo: 26xx is already r6xx
cxo: yeah thats what i meant
Ivanovic: x1xx is r500 series
cxo: oh
michaellarabel: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=NjY3OQ
cxo: jeez hardware from the dark ages
cxo: hey the images that show up oh phoronix.com come up blurred for me, i have to right click and say view image to see it clearly
cxo: are you reducing the quality in html? to reduce the bw?
Deanjo: michaellarabel, that latest PTS patch, is that to override my manually selected AA and AF?
michaellarabel: Deanjo, it already has had the support for some time. This patch just fixes a bug
michaellarabel: If you do: FORCE_AA=16 FORCE_AF=8 ./phoronix-test-suite benchmark nexuiz it will tell the NVIDIA driver to over-ride the values
michaellarabel: and restore the previous values once its done
Deanjo: OH ok
Ivanovic: michaellarabel: so soon you will be able to provide support in text profiles to directly run with those values?
Ivanovic: s/text/test
michaellarabel: Ivanovic: The support is already mostly there, yes.
Ivanovic: that is having it directly available in batch mode
michaellarabel: If you use FORCE_AA or FORCE_AF and save the results, when you run those results or use it from Phoronix Global, it will automatically apply those values
Ivanovic: okay, i got to head off to bed now, n8
Deanjo: lol http://techreport.com/articles.x/15403 I love how nvidia got the Mythbusters to take a shot at Larabee
Deanjo: pics http://picobsd.amdwebhost.com/~kbob/nvision/
cxo: is doing an online resize of his LVM+RAID5 setup
cxo: *cross fingers*
Deanjo: THANK YOU CLEMENS LADISCH!!!!!
Deanjo: Finally, analogue goodness graces my ears again!
Deanjo: can FINALLY enjoy his opamp upgrades in linux.
cxo: you made an analog amp?
Deanjo: No my sound card has upgradable opamps on it. The analogue out on this sound card kicks the crap out of most opamp/dacs found in consumer audio equipment
Deanjo: Auzentech X-Meridian with OPA 637SM opamps
cxo: wtf your sound card has opamps?
cxo: thats like saying my car has a horse in it
redeeman: not really
redeeman: basically all soundcards have opamps :P
redeeman: typically not socketed though
Deanjo: yup
redeeman: Deanjo: only problem i see with these really highend cards, is that they can impossibly clean the power enough
cxo: has an maudio1010
z3ro: hmm. I wouldn't mind getting a nice high end card, like the m-audio.
cxo: http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/Delta1010-main.html
z3ro: but it would be kind of a waste since I can't play really loud music at night on speakers. :P
cxo: tuff
z3ro: at the moment I'm on an audigy2 and headphones. :(
cxo: you live in flats?
z3ro: nope, still at home.
cxo: the fist audigy with the Crystal Systems chip was the best
cxo: first
cxo: had hardware mixing and all
z3ro: what kind of speakers do you use with that 1010?
cxo: tannoy floor standers
z3ro: never heard of those, but I guess I'm not really an audiophile... just like nice sounding music. :)
cxo: http://www.tannoy-speakers.com/s.php?product=122
cxo: i have the special edition Mercury 5, its a tad different from that one, but not much
cxo: had to import it
z3ro: nice. must have cost a bit on shipping?
Deanjo: I've had a long history with sound cards, first one I got was the Adlib Gold, then the immortal GUS, Yamaha SW1000XG, a couple crapative lab cards, m-audio 24/96, Chaintech AV-710 (awesome budget card for bit perfect), X-Plosion and the X-Meridian. When it comes to music this X-Meridian blows them all out of the water.
cxo: well compared to the cost of the speakers it wasnt too bad, its still about the same price as buying canada
cxo: in canada they charge an absurd premium for high end audio
cxo: like a $1k Rotel costs about $3k in Canada
z3ro: damn
cxo: heh i had a Yammy Sound Wave too with the Wave Table
Deanjo: Best sounding Midi there is
Deanjo: Yamaha made a booboo when they stopped the XG series
Deanjo: But the GUS was no slouch in it's day either
cxo: after the yamaha, i had a Turtle beach, then a Layla, then a creative platinum live, then maudio 192, then maudio1010
cxo: next is RME with light pipe
Deanjo: Oh ya also had a Monstersound MX-300
cxo: 8 channels, 24/192, AES
cxo: http://www.rme-audio.de/en_products_hdspe_madi.php
Deanjo: Nowdays you can't get a decent sounding midi card :( consumer level anyways
cxo: but its an expensive sucker, like $500+ depending on the config you get
cxo: and then you have to buy the DACs
cxo: Linux support is pretty descent too with RME stuff
cxo: i need 3x 500gigers to expand my raid5
cxo: is running out of disc space
Deanjo: offers cxo a 16MB thumbdrive for his cause.
cxo: you know they have these 32gb flash drives for <$100 i thought i could use one to install windows on to play games
Deanjo: lol that would be a slow load
cxo: if i get the 3x500gb, i wonder if my psu will handle booting 7 hard drivers and a HD4870,
cxo: ^hard drives
Deanjo: Poopsie Plays: Listen To Your Heart by Roxette on Greatest Hits Of the 90s [Year: 2008] [Track: 7] [Length: 5:12] [Bitrate: 204] [Size: 7.60 MB]
cxo: Poopsie?
Deanjo: hehehe this song still has a nice hard hitting baseline even in mp3
Deanjo: Ya the wife's nick for me
cxo: tips the bartender extra as he pours out a jigger of Real Sugar by Roxette from Room service
cxo: you dont know bass untill you buy an SVS
Deanjo: Ahhhh the 90's before they insisted on screwing with gains for radio play
cxo: Makes all that over hyped velodyne shit look amateur
cxo: this is my baby > http://www.svsound.com/products-sub-box-plus2.cfm
cxo: i think i showed you before...
Deanjo: Ya
cxo: its mostly off these days, the room is only 6k cubic feet
cxo: and this thing was made for 12k
Deanjo: remembers the endless hours with LEAP and TermPro designing car audio subs
cxo: i'm not too crazy about car audio, its really hard getting anything to sound good in a car because of the weird dimensions
Deanjo: Ya it's an art in itself
cxo: i'm running an Alpine MRP-F550 with Kicker RS coax in the merc
Deanjo: Enclosure A will sound great in car A and sound like crap in Car B
Deanjo: Lots of trial and error
cxo: i dont have subs, havent bothered, i know it would get expensive if i try
Deanjo: Imaging is one of the hardest thing with car audio
cxo: very good amp http://www.alpine-usa.com/US-en/products/product.php?model=MRP-F550
Deanjo: Nowdays kids just go after Boom-boom-boom bandpass crap
cxo: yeah and most people ask me why i have a 550watt amp to drive 80watt speakers
Deanjo: Ya, alpine probably is one of the rare quality japanese made car audio amps
cxo: dont forget Nakamichi
cxo: i think Audi is still using Nakamichi,
cxo: unless they moved to Bose like mercedes did
Deanjo: heh, Nakamichi has a long history of their gains not being balanced.
Deanjo: one channel always clips way before the other
cxo: man didnt they even patent that harmonic time alignment stuff, they had 110 SNR on those stereo amps
Deanjo: Alpine amps weren't all that great until they brought out the V12 series
cxo: i think its called V-Power now
Deanjo: and their subs were real hit or miss, one year they would have an awesome sub, the next year they would bring out a piece of crap
cxo: Alpine?
Deanjo: Ya
cxo: i've been checking some JL Audios
cxo: 8" http://mobile.jlaudio.com/products_subs_pages.php?page_id=3
Deanjo: Rockfords when I was in that games was pretty much top of the line back then for subs and amps
cxo: i think they are just going on Name, like Bose is these days
cxo: i have 2 empty Infinity SM80 bookshelves, i thought of putting subs in just for fun
Deanjo: Back then it was a Alpine head unit (or Sony ES), Rockford Subs, AudioControl EQ and crossovers, usually MB Quart speaks, USD waveguides
cxo: MB Quartz really made some good stuff
Deanjo: Polk was also used heavily for speaks as well
cxo: Polk is still good
cxo: but everyone is pushing really cheap mainstream crap these days
Deanjo: ie Kenwood lol
cxo: the sorta stuff you'd find at bestbuy
cxo: anything descent, like my Alpine V, has to be bought online
Deanjo: heh yup, back then the premiere head unit was the legendary 7909
Deanjo: That head unit was used in pretty much any serious comp vehicle
cxo: i've been wanting to put a pre+proc in the car, but mounting this stuff in a merc is not easy
Deanjo: Best damn car to have a simple system in and sound great was a Honda CRX
Deanjo: Factory speaker locations were perfect for 2 MB Quart coaxials and 1 sub was all that was needed
cxo: jap cars are still great for it, apart from not having the best insulation in the back
cxo: all german cars now have their own custom stuff
Deanjo: The imaging in that car was incredible
cxo: i think i'm off to study some french
cxo: self teaching myself...
Deanjo: We used a 80's something Volvo for nationals
cxo: haha a volvo80
Deanjo: I think it was a 88 or 87
Deanjo: Shoebox with wheels
cxo: yeah i know
cxo: they had a 2 door too
Deanjo: Ya this was a 4 door
Deanjo: Bosses wife at the time lol
Deanjo: her daily driver
cxo: with $5k of sound in it, that'd be interesting
Deanjo: Oh it was a hell of a lot more then 5k back tehn
Deanjo: Think about 13 k
Deanjo: The 7909 was $1600 alone IIRC
Deanjo: Then the rest of the AI-net stuff
cxo: so you heard MS is giving blackouts to people on XP but not on Vista
Deanjo: blackouts?
Deanjo: Ohh the new WGA lol
Deanjo: I'd probably wouldn't notice it. My background is always set to black lol
cxo: ah you let your dirty secret out
cxo: we dont run windows here
cxo: but i think i'm going to soon, cos i bought an ati card
Deanjo: Have to run windows 3dsmax isn't available on anything but
Deanjo: Besides that's also for the 32-bit versions I expect as well. They don't really touch 64-bit xp
cxo: strange they havent got that working on wine
cxo: they have things like Adobe CS2 going on wine
Deanjo: CS2 doesn't have near the 3d requirements
cxo: yeah i know
cxo: have you played with the likes of blender?
Deanjo: It's just like trying to get solidworks or the windows version of Pro/E going in wine. Good luck
cxo: so weird there is not Native Linux client for ProE
Deanjo: Ya blender has a long way to go to catch up to maya and 3dsmax. Especially in it's interface
Deanjo: Ya there is a native client of Pro/E
Deanjo: That's what I run, just saying apps like that are a PITA to try to get working in wine
Deanjo: (maya's interface looks fugly too in linux)
Deanjo: Wouldn't be surprised if Maya for linux gets phased out.
Deanjo: Now that discreet owns them
cxo: i think rogers is throttling my torrents of late
Deanjo: Got to keep the 'tubes' open for all them iPhones :P
cxo: they sold a crazy amount of those phones
