Phoronix IRC Log: 2008-08-19

maligor: 790GX boards sure are expensive
Marox: moin
Marox: is the current .deb file for pts 1.2.0.b2 up to date ?
redeeman: Deanjo: wee! the shop says they have the atom board in stock now
redeeman: so hopefully they'll be sending today
shital_: Hi kano:
Kano: hi shital_
shital_: yestarday i tried installing splashtop on HD, i did not succeed, there was something problem with "grub-install" command, which was saying "/tmp/target file not read correctly" what would be the problem??
shital_: i tried with partition type both ext2 and fat32
Kano: hmm grub-install, i check
Kano: thats at least a minor problem you can boot the cz_be with another loader too
Kano: basically the grub-install is correct
shital_: after that i checked that particlar partition for its contents, but nothing i found
Kano: you couldnt chainlog it?
shital_: yaa i did it but, was saying "Invalid device access"
Kano: what distro are you using?
shital_: ubuntu-8.04
Kano: well thats still the wrong one ;)
shital_: even for installing splashtop on seperate HD??
Kano: if grub-install is faulty i will not fix it ;)
Kano: the commandline is correct
shital_: which thing makes it wrong?
Kano: but you can put ce_bz in your normal menu.lst, you dont need chainload
Kano: and you can be sure i will NOT debug ubuntu problems
shital_: ok no problem
Kano: i only reuse the kernel (with some extra patches)
shital_: if i use KANOTIX for HD installation will it work??
shital_: because i installed it now
Kano: i guess so
shital_: bonly grub-install is making me to go wrong right?
Kano: thats unimportant
Kano: how often should i tell you this
shital_: ohh ok
Kano: you can use any grub loader and load the ce_bz!
Kano: or syslinux,lilo whatever
shital_: ok
Ivanovic: just edit your menu.lst file and that's it
Ivanovic: and if needed you can install grub easily with calling just grub and then inserting the right commands by hand
Ivanovic: (for me grub-install tends to always fail, doing things by hand always works...)
shital_: that is is correct, but there were no any other files copied to HD while installing
Kano: shital_: thats unlogical
Kano: shital_: they must be in a sub dir
Kano: called SPLASH.TOP
Kano: mkdir -p $DIR/SPLASH.TOP
Kano: cp -av $INPUT/* $DIR/SPLASH.TOP/
shital_: ok
michaellarabel: Awesome, Sun's second PTS profile will be committed to git shortly.
Kano: shital_: is it there or not
shital_: kano: i am not at all finding anything other than lost+found in that partition
Kano: shital_: right, i see the error
Kano: there was a -o too much in the mount line
shital_: ok i will try
Kano: http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showpost.php?p=43145&postcount=51
Kano: there it is too ;)
shital_: yess Kano, now i found all of them
Kano: now the files should be in that dir too
shital_: yaa, i got it but when i see the first screen and if i select any one its getting hanged even though the memory is 1GB
shital_: wats probs?
Kano: no idea, i have got no system that would boot from hd
Kano: only use
Kano: usb
Kano: tried only the win isntallers however
Kano: but that scripts emulates this installer
shital_: ok ok
Kano: did you try fat32 right now?
Kano: active set?
shital_: no it was ext2
Kano: try fat32
shital_: shall i try it with fat32??
shital_: ok
Kano: yes and be sure it is marked active
shital_: ie by using makeactive(hd0, 2)+1 right?
Kano: for example
Kano: but no +1 for makeative
shital_: ok
Kano: you can use
Kano: root (hd0,2)
Kano: makeactive
Kano: chainloader +1
Kano: if it is sda3
shital_: yess it is sda3 only
shital_: these commands are for fat32 right?
Kano: for any filesystem
Kano: just not ntfs
shital_: ok ok
Kano: as root would have been there rootnoverfy
Kano: but grub2 can use ntfs too if you do it right
Kano: therefore i like grub2...
Kano: the syntax is a bit differnt but it is really cool
Kano: http://kanotix.com/files/fix/grub2/create-g2ldr.sh
Kano: this should work with other systems too
Kano: you just need the g2ldr.mbr too, but thats the most easy thing
Kano: http://kanotix.com/files/fix/grub2/g2ldr.mbr
Kano: then you can play with win integration - put the g2ldr.mbr in the boot.ini
shital_: Kano: Really cool, now my HD splashtop is working
Kano: and the g2ldr in the c:\ too
Kano: if somebody likes to try this with selfcompiled images
Kano: did somebody else try grub2 for starting from the win bootloader?
Kano: well as you say it is working, i put the script in the first post
shital_: ok sure
shital_: Kano: u told me one day if i dont like va-photo.sqx then i should remove but, i tried deleting it but was getting error as "Installation Incomplete"
Kano: shital_: because you did not crop the version file
shital_: how i can do this??
Kano: dd of=version bs=1 seek=32 count=0
Kano: in the dir where it is
shital_: ok ok, then if any thing application i do not want this is the procedure to do, instaed of directly deleting it right??
Kano: well after cropping it then you can remove files, as there will be no check
shital_: "of=version" means of=*.sqx ??
Kano: no
Kano: in the SPLASH.TOP dir
shital_: ok
Kano: there is a file called version
shital_: ok ok
shital_: i will try now
shital_: Kano: but how i should come to know that seek=32 for va-photo.sqx??
Kano: NO for the version file
Kano: when do you get it?
Kano: http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11653
Kano: here i write about the version file too
shital_: ok i will go though
Kano: the hd script is point e) now
Kano: not really a usb install but well..
shital_: means by default if i want to remove any application then i should execute above dd command and delete that perticular file directly right??
Kano: you have to do that only once
shital_: yess
shital_: Thank you very much Kano
shital_: Kano: on which version of compiler we should compile the packages to add on to splashtop??
shital_: now i wanted to add mysql on it
Kano: shital_: use kanotix
Kano: when do you get it
Kano: then the system is not too new
Kano: and there will be no glibc errors
shital_: ok sure i will do
shital_: but i am little confusion with how to build java package with .bin installer, what u gave me yestarday
Kano: shital_: well it is more tricky than you think ;)
shital_: yaa, can u please instruct me?
Kano: basically i used make-jpkg then i added the symlinks which are usually alternates
Kano: no just the the package i gave you, it works
shital_: it will be more confusion
Kano: i have got really no interest in instructing you to build java packages!
Kano: especially when i a gave you a working one already!
shital_: yaaa true
Marox: michaellarabel: ?
michaellarabel: Hi
Marox: hi
Marox: do you want to release 1.2.0b2 soon ?
michaellarabel: 1.2.0 Beta 2 will be out tomorrow morning
Marox: ok.. i looked into +3.33V voltage thing
michaellarabel: It should be fixed
Marox: there is still a typo
michaellarabel: Where?
Marox: pts_module::save_file(".s/V3_POWER");
Marox: should be voltage , as i posted in the forum ;)
Marox: in file system_monitor.php
michaellarabel: Oops, fixed in git, thanks. 1.2.0b2 is already tagged but it will be fixed for the next beta/
Marox: and i have another big issue with monitoring
Kano: michaellarabel: http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12151
Kano: works with 2.6.27
michaellarabel: Marox: What issue is that
Marox: when i do Monitor=all ....
Marox: aticonfig --od-gettemperature
Marox: is called, right ?
Marox: well seems, that aticonfig hangs up and xorg.log grows ..
michaellarabel: Are you using ati graphics?
Marox: my log file was 600MB until i killed aticofig
Marox: yes i do
michaellarabel: What grows in the log file when you run that command?
Marox: (WW) fglrx(0) : No ADL handler for Escape code 0x00C000F
Marox: 2^n times
michaellarabel: That would be a bug with the driver itself then. I'd just recommend upgrading to the newest driver upon its availability.
Marox: i guess its a driverbug, too
Marox: seems this overdrivething is not yet stable / fully implemented for older ATI hardware
michaellarabel: What hardware are you using?
Marox: 9800pro agp
redeeman: dammit
redeeman: my brothers computer keeps breaking
redeeman: this is like the fifth time in the past 3 years i've had to buy a new for him, lol
Marox: btw. the same error in xorg.log occurs when running the new sanctuary demo
michaellarabel: ok
Kano: Host/Kernel/OS "Kanotix" running Linux 2.6.27-1-generic i686 [ KANOTIX 2007 Thorhammer ]

Kano: so kernel latest git + latest nvidia without patch
Kano: git 6 if you want
Kano: from changelog it might be faster with kde4 ;)
michaellarabel: Deanjo, what version of the NVIDIA driver are you using right now?
Kano: most likely 177.13 ;)
michaellarabel: Kano, is that what you're running?
Kano: you saw it: 177.67
michaellarabel: Right, but if anyone is running an older version, what is the NV Control version in the old version? I forgot to check before upgrading. So I know whether anything with NV Control was changed.
Deanjo: 173.14.12 at present
michaellarabel: Deanjo can you launch nvidia-settings and look at NV Control version
Deanjo: 1.16
michaellarabel: Okay, we're up to 1.17 now. Hopefully something new to play with in there :)
Kano: nvidia-settings: version 1.0 (buildmeister@builder57) Mon Aug 11 12:42:58 PDT 2008
Kano: thats the new one
redeeman: lol buildmesiter
Deanjo: brb
maligor: exactly 2000.000 MHz eh
Kano: well thats my older box i use for internet
maligor: you need a 2ghz dualcore for the internet?
Deanjo: Was recovered GPU errors in the old panel?
michaellarabel: I'm not seeing recovered GPU errors on the new panel
Deanjo: under xscreen 0
michaellarabel: oh
michaellarabel: hmmm I don't believe so
Deanjo: I don't recall seeing it either
Deanjo: Damn something disappeared under OpenGL settings and I don't remember what now
Deanjo: There was another checkbox under Misc
michaellarabel: Was it texture sharpening?
Deanjo: Ya that was it
michaellarabel: It looks like texture sharpening is enabled by default
michaellarabel: It's still in the NV Control extension and is enabled
michaellarabel: Deanjo: Looks like texture sharpening is now enabled by default as it's still in the NV Control extension
michaellarabel: GPUErrors can now be read by the NV Control extension :)
michaellarabel: Anyone running the old driver still?
Deanjo: michaellarabel, texture sharpening wasn't it, that is located under AA settings
michaellarabel: hmm
Deanjo: the uningine sli bug is resolved now with flipping
Deanjo: "but the support has finally been christened today with the 177.67 official driver release." <------ These are still beta's
Deanjo: not official
Plouj: michaellarabel: do you think I somehow can pass this kind of argument to bonnie: RAND_DELETE -s $(($SYS_MEMORY * 2)) instead of calculating the ram size when installing the test?
michaellarabel: hmm
michaellarabel: Plouj: It's calculated at run-time, not install-time
Plouj: oh right, but I still would like to move that calculation logic to a specific test suite
Plouj: so that my test suite doesn't have to follow it :p
Plouj: I think totally removing that is a solution because bonnie already uses a filesize which is double the amount of ram preset (if I don't pass any options to it)
michaellarabel: then add a check for another argument if $2 isn't present, use $SYS_MEMORY * 2 else use $2
mo0n_sniper: hi! i have a ati radeon x1150 graphics card and i've connected it threw s-video to my tv it renders my desktop but insteadead of videos it renders black can anyone help me
mo0n_sniper: i'm on windows
Ivanovic: uhm, you know that this chan is dedicated to linux and solaris, don't you?
Deanjo: lol wtf, I just noticed that sli kicks in on Flash 10
mo0n_sniper: oops sorry
michaellarabel: Deanjo, really? lol
michaellarabel: What happens if you enable the SLI HUD?
Ivanovic: wow, it really needs this much computation power?
Kano: well flash10 renders videos via opengl,so vsync for opengl is needed (fullscreen)
Kano: i dont know why flash does not set vsync as app override
maligor: Kano, so that it gets more system resources used
Deanjo: Ya it shows the hud michaellarabel
Deanjo: Took me off guard
Deanjo: Gonna be a hot one here today 39 C
Kano: maligor: before it was x11 - no accel at all!
maligor: Kano, and now it's SLI accelerated!
Kano: sure, opengl is used
maligor: SLI powered scaling quite probably
Kano: is a good thing
Kano: even the slowest card can do that, but why not via sli *g*
Kano: my 6200 can play youtube fullscreen without flickering
Kano: thats the oldest card you can use with 177.67
Deanjo: The sli green bar makes it so you can watch a 10 minute video now in 5 minutes :P
Deanjo: heh forgot about this commercial http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ldiYYJNnQUk
Kano: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=1749899&postcount=12
Oli``: The 177.67 drivers are IMMENSE
Deanjo: Please note: the 177.67 BETA release addresses several 2D performance issues; however, some of these performance improvements rely on new and/or experimental features of the driver, some of which are not enabled by default. We hope to post additional, more detailed information and configuration guidelines later today to help users get the best performance out of the current drivers.
Deanjo: looks like the openoffice rendering has been fixed
mha: what does immense mean?
Deanjo: I would assume big improvement
mha: perhaps I can start using my Nvidia gfx in my laptop now with some 2d improvements. switching desktops was quite horrible. :] It has 2 intergrated gfxes, one nvidia and one intel.
mha: the intel's 2d performance was hugely faster.
Exopaladin: I may have to try the experimental drivers then, not that I have too many 2D issues as long as I avoid KDE4 :P
Deanjo: The guide http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=118088
Milyardo: If the US Army were to start Support Linux Clients for their game again, how many do you think would play?
michaellarabel: Milyardo, a lot.
Milyardo: Sweet
michaellarabel: Why?
Milyardo: I've been talking to the Army Devs
Milyardo: If we can get enough people to post in the forums stating interest, they'd reconsider supporting a client
Milyardo: thought they still haven't told me how many post it would take
michaellarabel: If you have any more details for me, I can get a lot of posts there...
Milyardo: Well so far one dev just mentioned it in a PM
Milyardo: If they start a thread for it I'll tel ya
michaellarabel: I had a level 78 or something like that on AA years ago.
Milyardo: Same here
Milyardo: High 60s
Milyardo: AA3 Will be all new accounts
michaellarabel: Really? Why?
Milyardo: What will be espcialy interesting is that AA3 will run on the Unreal III engine, yet Epic still hasn't released a Linux Client
michaellarabel: When is AA3 coming?
Milyardo: It was supposed to be this summer, however no one has seen it yet
Milyardo: Who knows why its being held up
michaellarabel: .Linux Honor: 77. Looks like I still have my account :)
Milyardo: :)
michaellarabel: When did you communicate with this dev?
Milyardo: He PM'd me a few min ago
Milyardo: The Forum moderators aren't too friendly
michaellarabel: Why aren't they?
Milyardo: Don't know
Milyardo: Just search Linux in the forum
Milyardo: You'll see they've locked every thread relating to linux client
Milyardo: except for mine
michaellarabel: Is this one of the main devs?
Milyardo: Yeah he said right now they are discussing, thats it
michaellarabel: Want a lot of users to that thread?
Milyardo: Well I was hoping They'd create a Sticky thread just for that
Milyardo: but If getting alot of users on that will help them make up their mind
Milyardo: I don't want the Forum mod to get upset and lock it though...
michaellarabel: I would love to see that game come back to Linux.
Milyardo: Same here
michaellarabel: It just happens to be 9 months to the day since UT3 for the PC was released... Just realized that.
Milyardo: lol
Milyardo: Well I'm to sure what to do, I think I almost well for their flamebait and got that thread locked too
Milyardo: *fell
michaellarabel: Deserves a news posting to remind everyone the travesty going on...
Milyardo: You think?
michaellarabel: For 9 month UT3*
Milyardo: oh yeah
Milyardo: True
Milyardo: Its been way too long
Ivanovic: hey, almost time for the birthday celebrations
Ivanovic: though what i really think is great is, that if it eventually is released, it will be really checp
Ivanovic: s/checp/cheap
Ivanovic: that is i saw it today in a shop for 17€
Milyardo: I'd be really happy if I could buy a disk with just the Linux Installer
Milyardo: Or show in some way to Epic that my purchase is a Linux Purchase and not Windows
Milyardo: Its great that Enemy Terrirtory had a Linux Client and all, but how would they know I bought my copy for Linux
Ivanovic: jepp
Ivanovic: exactly
Ivanovic: the only thing they can see are server stats stating which OS is used
Ivanovic: since download numbers from the point installer do not count due to the linux distros mirroring everything, too
Milyardo: yep
Ivanovic: okay, i think now i deserve some good sleep
Ivanovic: that is after getting some dates for exams over the next two month, doing some sports and tagging and packaging the wesnoth 1.5.3 tarball
Ivanovic: n8
Milyardo: n8
Milyardo: I still haven't made up my mind on wether we should get more users on that thread, what do you guys think?
Milyardo: I got to go do some work, you guys should whisper me is you have an opinion
