Phoronix IRC Log: 2008-08-14

shital__: I got splashtop working on Pendrive fully
shital__: now i want to install it on Hard disk partition, its not taking that partition, can any body help me?
Ivanovic: moin
Xemanth: starkmjolk: okay very nice, the mobo which i ordered is sold out
starkmjolk: :(
Xemanth: life's hard :D
Xemanth: same mobo, but with sideport memory, ultra durable 2 and dual bios has better availability
Xemanth: but costs 90e
Kano: hi
shital__: Hello
shital__: Kano: I installed Splashtop on usb stick its working good
Kano: fine
Kano: best replace the bs-apache.sqx by the one from 1.2.8.0 - otherweise it has a nice http server for all data via usb ;)
shital__: ok
Kano: well the 1.2.8.0 variant is not fully secure but much better
Kano: if you like repack the va-photo - or delete it if you dont need it
shital__: if suppose i want to install other packages to it, then i shold only copy and paste *.sqx file to DVMUSB partition right?
Kano: yes
shital__: i believed that, *.sqx files can be created after compilng a source package and installing it to some seperate directory then mksquashfs it, am i right?
shital__: and ofcourse creating a vactl script in it
Kano: well i only compiled kernel modules
shital__: ok, but is that the process to create *.sqx files?
Kano: shital__: http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11610
shital__: ok fine
shital__: Kano: I tried installing splashtop on a seperate hard disk partition with the same script used for USB, but i did not get the result
shital__: the partition name it was giving was /dev/sda3, this i changed to DEVICE=/dev/sda3
Kano: that will never work
Kano: because the script PARTITIONS the device
shital__: yess
Kano: i could give you a mod for hd install if you really want it
shital__: yess i want it
shital__: i am trying lot
Kano: grub or syslinux?
shital__: grub
Kano: i write a script that uses a preformatted partition
shital__: ok
Kano: will use grub-install instead
shital__: ok fine, i am familiar with grub
shital__: thank you i will try now
Kano: basically you can use any grub to load the fake kernel, if it does not work try to set that partition active
Kano: ups last line wrong
Kano: wait
Kano: shital__: the umount is wrong in the first variant, there still is ${DEVICE}1 at the end and not $PARTITION
shital__: u r telling about this line? umount $PARTITION $INPUT where it should be ${DEVICE}1 in place of $PARTITION ??
Kano: yes
Kano: i wanted to give you updated script but you did not accept it
shital__: ok fine i will change that
shital__: Kano: i am sorry i did not see that
shital__: plz resend it
Kano: http://forums.slizone.com/index.php?showtopic=24054
Kano: i want that, maybe using wine...
Kano: there is already initial cuda support for wine
Kano: http://www.winehq.org/?issue=350#CUDA%20Followup:%20it%20works!
shital__: Kano: i have already running ubuntu on my machine with grub, will this script overwrite that??
Kano: that script installs grub in partition, you could chainload it,but wait ther is another error, one second
shital__: ok fine
Kano: accept it
shital__: shall i try now?
Kano: yes
shital__: ok
shital__: here only i need to change is the PARTITION right?
Kano: basically you should be able to use a ext2/3 partition too
Kano: in theory
shital__: yess its ext2 partition only
shital__: do i need it to format to other fs?
Kano: dont know if ce_bz is looking at ext2, if not use ntfs or fat
Kano: try it as ext2 first
shital__: ok fine i will format it to fat32
shital__: ok ok i will do it
Kano: did somebody try 2.6.27 yet?
Kano: http://kanotix.com/files/kernel/kernel-update-pack-generic-next/source/2.6.27-pv_lock_ops-fix.patch
Kano: that patch should be pushed upstream best in order to be able to use paravirt enabled
Kano: for fglrx+nvidia
Kano: if somebody like to do feel free to do so
Kano: still wrong in rc3-git1
redeeman: lol
redeeman: but if it's an internal symbol
redeeman: it shouldn't be
shital__: Kano: i think its not working i got this output http://pastebin.com/m405da1ae
Kano: shital__: ok, will update it
redeeman: http://users.skynet.be/fa018426/Georgia.jpg
shital__: ok
Kano: now it should be able to copy it
Kano: i could split it into user data and other data too,but i dont think thats important
Kano: shital__: wait,one thing
Kano: forgot the /
shital__: ok ok, previous on copied but did not appear anything on the grub menu
Kano: you would need to chainload that
Kano: using
Kano: chainloader (hd0,2)+1
Kano: if you use sda3
shital__: ok ok after this command i should use "kernel /SPLASH.TOP/ce_bz" right?
Kano: nope
Kano: chainloader loads the grub IN that partition
Kano: you can install into ext2 + fat parttiions
Kano: grub
shital__: ohhh ok ok
Kano: so if ext2 does not work just use fat16 or fat32
shital__: ok
shital__: presently its fat32 only but not working
shital__: i chainloaded it
Kano: set the partition active
shital__: how i can do that?
shital__: by makeactive??
Kano: makeaktive (hd0,2)
Kano: or use root (hd0,2)
Kano: makeaktive
Kano: chainloader +1
shital__: ok
shital__: Kano: its giving Grub Error 18
Kano: form the internal or external grub
shital__: i gave above commands and its ving that error
shital__: should i change the partition to ext2??
Kano: shital__: when do you get that error
Kano: from the outside or inside grub?
shital__: inside grub
Kano: grub error 18 is really unlogical
Kano: that means that your bios is so old that it can not access beyond 120 gb (lba48) error
Kano: is the partition behind 120 gb?
shital__: that partition is of 2 gb size
Kano: no the position
Kano: show fdisk -l
shital__: http://pastebin.com/m6927ab91
shital__: can u see that?
Kano: that whole hd is 6 gb only in a new pc?
Kano: did you enabel lba in bios or not
shital__: Kano: actually its Virtual OS
Kano: vbox ?
shital__: Yess
shital__: do u mean that i am getting error because of partition size issue?
Kano: try
shital__: what?
Kano: kernel (hd0,2)/SPLASH.TOP/ce_bz
Kano: and set the parition aktive
Kano: something si really weird on your system...
shital__: ohh ok ok
shital__: in kernel (hd0, 2)/lost+found only
shital__: no SPLASH.TOP
Kano: then the script did not run
shital__: ohh, but i could see that the copying action wait i will show u the output
shital__: http://pastebin.com/m98f1e76
michaellarabel: Deanjo, hi
Kano: shital__: i guess it was not mounted
shital__: the partition??
shital__: i should need to mount it??
Deanjo: What's up michaellarabel
michaellarabel: not much, have you had a chance to try replacing the $VIDEO_WIDTH and $VIDEO_HEIGHT in the test profile to see if the graphics tests still crash>
Deanjo: Yes they still crash
shital__: Kano: Even after mounting also same thing is happening
Kano: can you install x11vnc
michaellarabel: Deanjo: That makes it even more confusing... Are you sure it
michaellarabel: it's not a system issue?
shital__: Kano: thats that?
Deanjo: it's across all the graphic tests and yes I am 100% sure
michaellarabel: what is the output generated from etqw-demo? I don't think you posted that before
Kano: shital__: to control you pc via vnc
shital__: ok,
Deanjo: same as urban terror michaellarabel
Deanjo: in my forum post
michaellarabel: Okay
Deanjo: anyhows I've got to get to work
michaellarabel: Cya
Deanjo: later, be back in 9 hours
shital__: Kano how can i use that x11vnc??
Kano: shital__: in a few min i will tell you
shital__: ok fine
redeeman: Kano: ping
Kano: shital__: so now
Kano: did you install it?
Kano: redeeman: wahts up?
redeeman: remember my ram problem
redeeman: i've tested the ram modules in another box, no problems
redeeman: all the memtest errors are within 0.1m -> 0.6m
redeeman: i tried reordering the modules in the dimms
redeeman: but it's still in that region
redeeman: memtest counts the errors up in the order of ~2000 each second
redeeman: untill it reaches about ~50k
redeeman: then SOMETHING just beeps
Kano: raise dram voltage
redeeman: and i know it's not the pc speaker
redeeman: because it's disconnected
Kano: do you still use 1.8 v stock?
redeeman: no
redeeman: it auto sets to 2.2v
redeeman: but in the other box, i ran it at 2v
redeeman: and that worked too
redeeman: but kingston specifies 2.2v
Kano: set it to 2v then
redeeman: i have tried
redeeman: i suspect it's not the ram
Kano: maybe incompatible with your board
redeeman: it's on the list from gigabyte
redeeman: that's why i choose it
redeeman: i have a theory
redeeman: i THINK it may be my nvidia card
Kano: hmm, and with stock speeds?
Kano: ram errors due to nvidia?
redeeman: well yeah
redeeman: it's not like that's anything new
redeeman: my 6600gt does it with a few driver revision
redeeman: s
Kano: at ddr2-800 it should not need more than 1.8v
redeeman: i tried ddr2-800 and ddr2-1066
Kano: and you got errors with 800 too?
Kano: shital__: look into query
redeeman: yes but i don't think it's the ram
redeeman: why would it always be in that specific region
redeeman: even if i reorder dimms
Kano: did you ever saw a memtest error caused by a gfx card
redeeman: yes
Kano: well then put in your ati card, you bought it...
redeeman: yeah i guess i have to atleast for testing
redeeman: allthough i don't have time to get git X now
Kano: is you bios up2date?
redeeman: last i checked there werent any updates
Kano: then use vesa or fglrx
redeeman: i'd rather use paper and pen than fglrx ;)
Kano: radeonhd is also easy to compile
Kano: best try that
redeeman: but seriously, why would the errors only be in that little region?
Kano: contact problem maybe?
Kano: in one dimm slot
redeeman: wouldn't that still cause a whole lot more issues?
redeeman: the thing is, theres no sign of trouble within linux
Kano: well a memtest86 error IS critical
redeeman: yeah unless it's memtest86 bug
Kano: dont think so
Kano: is it detecting your chipset or is it running in generic mode
redeeman: it detects chipset
Kano: when the ddr speed is shown it should work correct
Kano: shital__: are you sleeping
Plouj: is there a special channel for PST?
Plouj: and phorogit
michaellarabel: Plouj: all same channel
Plouj: oh, hi michaellarabel
Plouj: it looks like the "commitdiff" link here leads to the same page: http://www.phorogit.com/index.php?p=pts-results-viewer.git
Plouj: I take it it's a custom git web viewer
michaellarabel: Plouj: Yeah, the git viewer is custom and has a few bugs currently.
Plouj: it's a minor thing, but I thought I'd let you know
michaellarabel: Yes, thank you
Plouj: I'm gonna try PST now :)
michaellarabel: Plouj: Cool, hope it works well. Feedback is appreciated :)
Plouj: humm, I'm having somewhat of a hard time figuring out the git URL for PST
Plouj: so that I can actually do a git clone
Plouj: it would be nice if it was displayed on the PST website or at least on the phorogit repository summary page
michaellarabel: git-clone http://www.phorogit.com/repo/phoronix-test-suite.git
michaellarabel: Yeah I know it's missing right now
Plouj: oh, it's HTTP
Plouj: I don't understand what command these Installation Options are for: http://www.phoronix-test-suite.com/documentation/1.0/pts_options.html
Plouj: doesn't look like it's for install-sh
michaellarabel: No, for install-sh just run it as root. Or run ./install-sh /usr/local/ if you want that prefix
Plouj: it would be nice if install-sh printed a nice message of what it does and that it require root access instead of spitting out error messages
Plouj: and it would be nice to have a list of all of the ways to install PST mentioned in the readme or on the website
Plouj: (^some things to add to the TODO list :)
michaellarabel: Yes
Plouj: so, what command are those options on the website for?
Plouj: phoronix-test-suite?
michaellarabel: For when running the phoronix-test-suite, yes.
Plouj: ah, indeed
Plouj: I'm glad that printed something useful :)
Plouj: humm, I started ./phoronix-test-suite install a while a go and it's saying "This process may take several minutes." However, dstat is showing no CPU, no HDD activity and under 1KB of incoming network activity
michaellarabel: What distribution?
Plouj: Ubuntu
Plouj: lenny
michaellarabel: hmmm
Kano: lenny = debian
Plouj: that's what /etc/*version says
Kano: ubuntu has hardy, intrepid or such codenames
Kano: ubuntu had lsb-release
michaellarabel: The "this may take a few minutes" occurs when it's trying to use the system's package management system
Plouj: humm
Plouj: it might have been the case that the sudo password timed out
Kano: cat /etc/lsb-release
Plouj: I killed PST and restarted it
Plouj: now I get the sudo password prompt (for the first time)
Plouj: Kano: it's hardy, apparently
Plouj: 8.04.1
Plouj: now I've got some net traffic finally
Plouj: or not
Plouj: looks like I'm back to the initial scenario
Plouj: I confused net traffic with disk activity
Plouj: which is writes at just under 1MB/sec
Plouj: tries to install the dep. packages by himself
Plouj: maybe some mirror was really slow
Plouj: looks like the manual way was better, now PST is installing the actuall tests :)
Plouj: how much space do all of the available PTS tests take up?
Plouj: I just realized that I have 400MB left :p
michaellarabel: Plouj: what are you installing?
Plouj: "stresscpu2 sqlite ramspeed pts-graph openssl mencoder memory-bandwidth md-gromacs java-scimark2 iozone gtkperf gnupg glmark ffmpeg fio espeak encode-wavpack encode-ogg encode-mp3 encode-flac compress-lzma compress-gzip compress-7zip compliance-sensors compliance-acpi bonnie build-apache"
Plouj: at least I'm hoping to install those
michaellarabel: The 30" 2560 x 1600 Samsung monitor has arrived :)
redeeman: nice
michaellarabel: Sure cost a lot though :(
redeeman: how much?
michaellarabel: $1278 USD
redeeman: you obviously have no idea what stuff costs outside of the US
redeeman: the dell 3008 costs 2800 usd in DK
Ivanovic: that monitor starts for about 1500€ in germany (that is not from dell but another shop)
redeeman: yeah i know, i found it somewhat cheaper in uk too
Ivanovic: the cheapers 30" in germany is one from LG
redeeman: at non-dell shop
Ivanovic: a flatron w3000h
Ivanovic: this starts for 1100€
redeeman: there is a daewoo 30" in dk for 1400 USD
cygoku_: Does anyone know if Intrepid Ibex will ship with EXT4 file system ?
Vegar: cygoku_: I doubt it
cygoku_: That's too bad.
redeeman: why?
redeeman: i don't recall it being marked stable yet
Kano: redeeman: did you ever encode h264?
redeeman: yes
Kano: with badaboom i can encode pal h264 with 75 fps
Kano: and 8800 gts 512
redeeman: with how high settings (equivelant to x264 settings) ?
Kano: well you can set the bitrate
redeeman: but theres alot more to it than bitrate
redeeman: _ALOT_
Kano: well the gui is pretty simple
Kano: http://www.badaboomit.com/
redeeman: with what is considered extremely high settings, i can encode ~50fps in pal resolution on my quadcore
redeeman: i somewhat doubt badaboom can match the quality
redeeman: if i go down just a tad, i can easily do ~90
Kano: i am sure it does
redeeman: x264 is considered the best encoder there is
Kano: the quality is good
Kano: just the gui is for beginners
redeeman: it would be fun to do a side by side comparisin
Kano: upload sample file and which settings you want to get it encoded
redeeman: what settings can one set in badaboom?
Kano: size, deiniterlace, bitrate, and a few other settings
Kano: it has profiles for ipod up to ps3
redeeman: can you choose deblocking and search strategies and probability for keyframes etc
redeeman: ?
Kano: you can set fixed keyframes and such things too
Kano: well keep it simple with your settings
redeeman: but there is no "simple" with x264 :P
Kano: well just give bitrate, size and if it should be deinterlaced
redeeman: i don't really have a sample file unfortunately
Kano: then you can compare the resutls
redeeman: we should probably find some progressive sample
redeeman: as that seems most relevant
Kano: well just show me one
redeeman: ill look into it tomorow
Kano: well just got that cuda wine dll compiled, but the system is not responding when i run folding@home...
Kano: you need cuda toolkit beta 2
Kano: and you have to patch wine, that it writes nvidia as driver
Kano: michaellarabel: is there a gfx load check for nv or only coretemp?
michaellarabel: only for ATI, I know of no load indicator exposed on NVIDIA Linux
Kano: not good, folding at home runs, i just dont know what is going on on the gpu
Kano: you can only parse the log file to see how much is finished
michaellarabel: I wish they exposed some counter through NV Extension
Kano: nvidia-settings -tq GPUCoreTemp
Kano: works, but how did you find that value?
redeeman: on my 6600gt i can get the temps from lm_sensors
Kano: redeeman: try that line
redeeman: nvidia-settings: unrecognized option: "-tq"
Kano: maybe you have got a too old nvidiasettings
Kano: nvidia-settings -v
Kano: nvidia-settings: version 1.0 (buildmeister@builder63) Tue Jun 10 17:15:06
redeeman: 1.0
Kano: michaellarabel: nvidia-settings -q ShowSLIHUD
Kano: did you test that yet
Kano: redeeman: nvidia-settings -tq RefreshRate
Kano: does that work?
redeeman: nvidia-settings: unrecognized option: "-tq"
Kano: try to get a newer version
Kano: i use the one from 177
redeeman: i use one downloaded from nvidias servers 2 years ago
Kano: well thats a tiny bit outdated ;)
redeeman: cant be arsed :P it might hardlock
redeeman: it's nvidia after all
redeeman: (no, one doesent become so suspecious for no reason :P)
Kano: Tue Jun 10 17:15:06 PDT 2008
Kano: thats working
redeeman: Wed Jun 28 05:42:47 CEST 2006
Kano: how about getting a new one?
Kano: is gentoo so outdated *g*
redeeman: lol it's my own fault :P
redeeman: in gentoo i can choose either the latest from ftp or the one bundled in driver package
Kano: then choose the other one...
Kano: strings $(which nvidia-settings)|less
Kano: to see more options ;)
redeeman: but i'd rather not try run it now, i have stuff open i'd rather not have hardlock on me
redeeman: it might be easier to just read the source you know :P
Kano: q is query
Kano: does not hardlock
redeeman: but you always say that, so your hardware must be more robust :P
Kano: looks like ;)
Kano: a nv 6200 and a 8800 gts 512 work fine here *g*
redeeman: i just have normal mainstream 6600gt
redeeman: and quadro 3400
redeeman: okay ill try a newer
redeeman: redeeman@redeeman # nvidia-settings -tq GPUCoreTemp
redeeman: 67
redeeman: hmm
redeeman: it appears to just have raised like ~5 degrees after running that
redeeman: lol
redeeman: more
redeeman: i knew i couldnt trust nvidia
Kano: my 8800 has got even this
Kano: nvidia-settings -tq GPUAmbientTemp
redeeman: now it's 75deg
redeeman: ambient has 6600gt aswell
Kano: the 6200 does not
redeeman: lol ffs
redeeman: running nvidia-settings un-underclocked my gpu
Kano: well it is passively cooled
redeeman: lol nvidia cant be trusted at ANYTHING
redeeman: just requesting temperature changes clocks
redeeman: what's wrong with them?!
redeeman: i must underclock my gpu
redeeman: or xv crashes it
redeeman: (god damn nvidia)
Kano: replace cooler, i did that serveral times with ati cards, but you can find nice arctic cooling things for nv too
Kano: 2 slots wide
redeeman: are you saying nvidias reference designs arent up to the task?
Kano: single slot ati is bad too - usually too loud
Kano: had some agp cards one, 9700 pro and 9800 pro
Kano: before i sold em
cxo: so with all this talk about ATi and drivers et al, which card does one buy?
cxo: the older r500 or the new one?
Kalafok: Kano
Kalafok: my laptop scrolls faster than my pc
redeeman: cxo: if you wanna use free drivers now, you go R500
cxo: i'm only gonna buy in Sept/Oct
cxo: back-to-school specials :)
Kalafok: its a 8800 GTS 512 with native drivers versus an intel onboard 855 with vesa drivers
Kalafok: the intel wins
cxo: my box at work has no 2d acceleration
cxo: compiz runs fine, really smooth too, but if you have lots of scrolling text on the screen, it cripples the box
Kalafok: D:
Kano: Kalafok: intel with vesa not with intel driver?
Kalafok: yeah
Kalafok: with vesa
Kano: why that?
redeeman: well :P
redeeman: everything beats nvidias 2d in 8xxx
redeeman: so well :P
Kalafok: wont run otherwise
redeeman: Kalafok: most funny, try get openoffice impress
redeeman: on the nvidia
Kalafok: oh right, i should try that :P
redeeman: and watch scrolling in a presentation
redeeman: that's _REALLY_ impressive
Kalafok: lol
redeeman: it's so slow, that a 12mhz amiga can do faster
Kano: Kalafok: i have got no scrolling problems without compiz, using ff2 and kde 3.5.5
redeeman: it takes literally seconds if you mistakenly hits the scroll button
redeeman: Kano: try resize windows in compiz
Kano: Kalafok: btw. i got folding @ home running with cuda + wine
redeeman: that's a nice slowness
Kalafok: ah
Kalafok: pwetty
redeeman: (and no, dont have it set to "rescale" the actual imap)
redeeman: image*
Kano: well that offical info is a bit weird - the 7z files you can not extract, but you can get the cuda source, then you install the cuda 2 toolkit and you can compile it then
Kano: also you need to patch wine that it reports a nvidia card
redeeman: the 2d part of nvidias 8xxx driver is seriously so bad, that if it had been winblows, they would have _NEVER EVER_ in a million years been allowed to even release it as an alpha beta preview release
Kalafok: redeeman :(
redeeman: software rendering
redeeman: inside a qemu
redeeman: in softrware emulation mode
redeeman: is faster
Kano: installing cuda is abit tricky too, wiht default path you have to add afile to ld.so.conf.d
Kalafok: currently im playing X3 on my pc
Kalafok: on xp :(
redeeman: well.. if at some point you want a laugh, try openoffice
Kano: did you try badaboom with latest physx pack?
redeeman: ofcourse afterwards you will probably be crying
Kalafok: me?
Kano: yes, pretty fast h264 encoding
Kalafok: ah
Kalafok: i neve do encoding
Kalafok: +r
Kano: well you could copy a dvd to h264 ;)
Kalafok: i dont know why nvidia is such a mess
Kalafok: i had trouble with the onboard raid controller as well
redeeman: because they know their customers will bend over
Kalafok: odds are if ati is gonna keep improving thier linux support, im switching over
redeeman: and if they ask pretty nicely for it (by making extremely expensive 8800 ultra versions), people BOTH bend over and lube up
redeeman: and praise them for it
Kalafok: my 8800 was pretty much a bargain :P
Kalafok: 175 euro's for a card this fast
Kalafok: well, thats pretty neat
redeeman: yeah very fast
redeeman: multiple seconds to scroll in a simple office document
Kalafok: except for drivers D:
redeeman: i'd say you are right on track for matching 1980 hardware
Kalafok: yes and no
redeeman: the hardware could be the fastest thing ever created
redeeman: but if the drivers arent there
redeeman: it doesent matter at all
cxo: 175 euro will get you a HD4870 here
Kalafok: its as fast as 1980 hardware, because of drivers
Kalafok: cxo, i know :O
Kalafok: too late now
redeeman: Kalafok: drivers are kindof part of the package
Kalafok: ill have to do with the 8800 for a while
Kalafok: redeeman, exactly
Kalafok: and thats why they have to be top shape to make the product any good
redeeman: but they arent
Kalafok: indeed :(
redeeman: so essentially you bought a 1980 nostalgia pack with 10000 times increased power usage
Kano: Kalafok: i guess you just use the wrong distro, it runs fine with kanotix ;)
Kalafok: redeeman, except if i use xp :P
Kalafok: Kano, ill try that too some day :P
redeeman: Kano: are you seriously telling me that if i get kanotix, openoffice will scroll properly on 8800gt or gts?
Kano: well you can install openoffice 2.4.1 official debs or use 2.0 from etch
redeeman: and will compiz work? (aka resizing windows be smooth?)
Kano: there is no new compiz, just berly
redeeman: well.. whatever, will beryl work then?
Kano: sure it works
redeeman: with the feature of smooth resizing window?
redeeman: without xgl
Kano: just boot my live cd
Kano: then do
Kano: su
Kano: fix-unionfs
Kano: update-scripts-kanotix.sh
Kano: install-nvidia-debian.sh -ar
Kano: and test yourself
redeeman: ill have my brother do it
redeeman: he has the hardware
redeeman: he even have an abysmal nforce
Kano: if you have got lots of ram first use toram option when you boot
redeeman: 4gb
Kano: well then use toram
Kano: btw just uploaded patched wine
Kano: source for cuda for wine, link to toolkit + file for /etc/ld.so.conf.d
Kano: http://kanotix.com/files/fix/cuda/
Kano: msiexec /i folding.msi
Kano: to instlal btw
Kano: be sure not to use defalt 100% settings in adv tab, 80 is enough
cxo: what is that?
Kano: http://www.winehq.org/?issue=350#CUDA%20Followup:%20it%20works!
Kano: folding @ home works (not the viewer, but it calcs something)
Kano: running on gpu
Kano: +cpu
Kano: i just put the needed files on my website because on the original site there are wrong patches for wine also unextractable 7z files
cxo: doesnt have CUDAs
Kano: well you need geforce 8 or better
cxo: i have a 7600gs
cxo: 256mb of ultra fast performance
cxo: can beat 8x HD4870s in a row
redeeman: it can beat 8x 8800gt in 2d performance atleast :D
redeeman: hell, even 800
cxo: 7600 >> 4870
redeeman: probably
cxo: Is Stephane a boy or girls name?
Kalafok: hmmmm
Kalafok: wget url & doesnt work :P
Kalafok: especially 2 wgets at once
cxo: screen, nohup etc..?
Kalafok: uhm
Kano: wget automatically uses nohup
Kalafok: its messy, but at least kanotix is fetching
Kano: thorhammer rc7 i hope
Kalafok: yup
Kalafok: the site is still showing rc6
Kalafok: so it poops out a 404 :P
Kano: http://debian.tu-bs.de/project/kanotix/preview/KANOTIX-2007-THORHAMMER-RC7.iso
Kano: http://debian.tu-bs.de/project/kanotix/preview/KANOTIX-2007-THORHAMMER-RC7.iso.md5
Kalafok: ah, ill try that too
Kano: i have got specialized 3d benchmark isos with 3d driver auto install too
cxo: i was just reading the wine release report, and wow, i didnt even realise wine has such good support, even for things like Photoshop CS2
cxo: http://www.winehq.org/?issue=349#Weekly%20AppDB/BugZilla%20Status%20Changes
Kano: well in 12-16h i expect next wine 1.1.3 ;)
cxo: 12-16hours?
Kano: every 2nd friday
Kano: there is usually a new wine
Kano: michaellarabel: did you know that there are performance kit drivers for nvidia?
cxo: Anyone played Call of Duty before?
Oli```: cxo: yeah
cxo: Is there missions or only online play?
Oli```: surely everybody has played one form of CoD at some point in their lives
Oli```: cxo: all the versions have had great single player
cxo: ok, and is Call of Duty 1.4 the same as Call of Duty 4 ?
Oli```: Cod4's SP was a bit short but very good.
Oli```: cxo: Probably not
Oli```: If it says call of duty 1.4, it means it's the first game, version 1.4
Kalafok: COD 4 was very good indeed :P
Oli```: If you're looking for CoD4: http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=10429
Oli```: http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=12804 even
cxo: yeah i was trying to figure out which one i should go through the pain of trying to get going
Oli```: COD1 is a great place to start
cxo: so i guess i want COD 4, version 1.7 ?
Oli```: But yeah, go with the latest version. There's a short guide on how to get it installed and running on there (you need to recompile Wine with a patch - It's really quite simple)
cxo: recompile wine!
cxo: fuk
cxo: i compiled wine once like 5yrs back, the build directory became 687mb
cxo: why is the patch not accepted in the main trunk?
cygoku_: Can anyone take 1 minute and tell me what is "BAT0" ... I see that at 164% in the "System Monitor" screenlets,...
cxo: battery?
cygoku_: Now showing 194%,...
cxo: when it gets to 235% run!!!!!!
cxo: or 911% too
cygoku_: I take it it's bad,... :(
Oli```: i compiled wine once like 5yrs back, the build directory became 687mb << it gets big but nowhere near that large IIRC. You might be able to run it without the 3dmark patch (I think I had some success) but your mileage will vary
Oli```: cygoku_: hopefully it means the battery monitor is buggy
cygoku_: Can I unbug that ?
cxo: i'm git cloning as we parle
Oli```: No idea
Oli```: cxo: there are tars of the source.. they might be a bit more stable
cxo: i'm used to living on the edge
cxo: puts his finger in his mouth and tries to look eveeel
cygoku_: I guess that power manager is what monitors the battery ?
cxo: lm_sensors i think
Oli```: cygoku_: really no idea - I use a real computer with wires and proper keyboards and massive screens =D
cygoku_: Bleh :P
Oli```: http://i.thepcspy.com/oli/newscreen.jpg no battery monitors there!
cxo: je veux un massive screen
cxo: 30" samsung T series
cxo: lusts
Oli```: Dual 30" would be too big. I have to move my head too much with these 24"ers as it is
cxo: i'd prefer one big screen at home
cygoku_: J'ai un 22" flatscreen et le tout me suffit.
Oli```: Dual screens rule for most things. The exceptions are gaming and watching media where your attention is just on one screen.
cxo: mais dans la bureau, peut-etre dual is better
Oli```: "but in your office, maybe two are better"?
cxo: yeah exactly, at work i just have a gazillion ssh windows
Oli```: My French is a little rusty
cxo: yes
cxo: at home i just single task mostly
cxo: Oli```, a few weeks with this, http://www.torrentz.com/e7f519c48bf0b3dcc4eea42a646a3aa530cb0915 and you will speak fluently
cxo: but writing is the tricky bit since that program is really designed for getting you speaking quickly
cxo: try it out, it will be well worth the bandwidth
Kano: redeeman: when i force beryl to use nvidia mode it is really smooth
redeeman: no xgl?
Kano: nope, why should somebody need xgl?
redeeman: because it's the aiglx implementation by nvidia that's slow
Kano: did you enable the benchmark mode?
redeeman: no because i never tried it with beryl, but with more modern compiz
redeeman: well actually
redeeman: i did try with beryl
redeeman: but then later upgraded
redeeman: and it was the same
Kano: nvidia mode about 75 fps, aiglx mode up to 500 fps
Kano: but it seems only nvidia is wobbling
Kano: ff2 still scrolls really fast
Kano: absolutely no performance problems here
Kano: bye
redeeman: not scrolling
redeeman: resize the window
redeeman: and watch it stutter
cxo: ugh i have to apply this patch manually
