Phoronix IRC Log: 2008-08-13

Xemanth: ooh nice my 2x2GB A-Data memory kit has arrived to local post
Xemanth: ok i thought that esata connector is what i need in future and ordered GA-MA78GM-S2H
Xemanth: i really really hope that ati's linux drivers are ready for this mobo :(
Xemanth: that i don't need to let down
Xemanth: starkmjolk:
Ivanovic: moin
shital_: i want to install splashtop on seperate partition with Ubuntu OS, which file of splashtop i have to use?
shital_: can i achieve this by using .IMG file ??
Ivanovic: shital_: i don't know if anyone in here really knows
Ivanovic: you should maybe wait a little until kano joins, he will be able to tell you
redeeman: kano undoubtedly have some bootable image, yes
shital_: OK, fine
maligor: redeeman, heh, reading your forum post on "sound card considerations for htpc", I'm surprised you don't recommend balanced analog instead ;)
shital_: can u know how i can mount .IMG file? i was trying but it asked me the file type but donno which type
redeeman: maligor: if you must know, i believe that the overhead in electronics fails to do enough
redeeman: i don't have a noise problem in my analog system
redeeman: but you basically double the amount of electronics
starkmjolk: Xemanth: they have their quirks, but all hardware under linux do
starkmjolk: it has worked well for me
maligor: well, balanced audio negates induction noise in the cables
redeeman: yes but i don't have a problem
redeeman: i find that balanced does more harm than good
redeeman: the signal to noise ratio i have is already so good that no human would ever be able to hear it
redeeman: or even sense it
maligor: heh
redeeman: allthough im sure theres a slew of people having spent $10000000 on equipment that will claim to be able to
redeeman: :)
redeeman: to them i can only extend my trademarked offering
redeeman: they can come visit me, can they do good on their claim, ill pay all expenses and throw in a beer, if not, they cover the beer :)
maligor: do you require a receipt?
maligor: and does all expenses cover flights?
redeeman: if you live somewhere requiring it, i suppose it does
redeeman: but i only ever had danish people challenge me
redeeman: hint: i haven't had to give out a single beer due to this offering :P
starkmjolk: redeeman: I was there last week but you weren't home so I flew back. do I get free money now? :)
redeeman: i was home last week
redeeman: in fact i don't believe i even left the home for more than ~20 minutes each day to walk my dog
starkmjolk: why didn't you open? :P
redeeman: because that would be the job of the person living on first floor with the door, im on second floor :P
starkmjolk: j/k, and if you're in- danishland I don't need to fly :)
redeeman: :)
redeeman: i am in denmark yeah :)
redeeman: maligor: but i can certainly understand that some people need balanced
redeeman: maligor: some friends of mine has so much noise on their power lines that it's horrible without
starkmjolk: I know its called denmark, saw danishland in a bash.org quote. sounds more fun :)
shital__: I installed splashtop on usb stick and also its booting from it, but if i press any of the function buttons it is getting hanged, what may be the problem ? can any one tell me please?
Xemanth: shital__: how big stick do you have?
Xemanth: thats off topic question
shital__: 2 GB
Xemanth: nice, i would like to have splashtop on usb stick also :<
shital__: but mine one is not fully entering into OS, it is hanging once i select the button , why it is so?
Xemanth: shital__: don't know
Kano: hi, did somebody else test 2.6.27-rc3 yet? it seems e1000e and zd1211rw are problematic with it
firewing1: michaellarabel: You're in charge of phorogit, right?
michaellarabel: firewing1: Yes
firewing1: Can I submit a patch or two for rawhide/F10? (not sure if it applies or not for F9)
michaellarabel: Sure, mail it to michael [at] phoronix and I can push it in the branch and get it into the driver
firewing1: thanks
Kano: michaellarabel: cant you make a little article how stupid ati is when they are unable to fix the rss feed which i reported serveral ppl who work for ati
Kano: http://ati.amd.com/online/rss/atilinuxdriver.rss?OTC-rssfeedlinux
Kano: the 8-7 link still points to nonsense
Kano: https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/catalyst_806_linux.html
Kano: they can not even fix a simple rss feed within serveral weeks
Kano: and i reported it immediately
Kano: thats clever, isnt it
Kano: they are unable to fix the driver AND they can not fix a typo in an rss feed. that company is extra stupid
redeeman: and while you are at it
redeeman: you might also get them to finally remove the text saying fglrx for amd64 REQUIRES 32bit compatibility libs to install and work
Kano: it is impossible to tell amd anything, they dont hear anything from outside, they live in their own world
redeeman: well bridgman did awknowledge this, but have seemingly not done anything
redeeman: http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/linux64/linux64-radeon.html
redeeman: "32-Bit packages must be installed for 64-Bit Linux drivers to install or work."
redeeman: the most tragic thing is the "install or work", suggesting they don't know if it even is so, and if it is, which fails
Kano: well they help for 32 bit games of course
redeeman: yeah but that's kindof a given
Kano: and for some time the amdcccle was 32 bit
redeeman: yeah but i don't give a damn about amdccle
Kano: i still install 32 bit compat libs with my script
redeeman: and they should just release a 64bit amdccle aswell
redeeman: yeah sure kano
redeeman: im not saying the driver package shouldn't install the 32bit opengl libs
redeeman: but they shouldn't depend on external 32bit libs
Kano: i dont know if they do anymore
Kano: just run ldd, then you know more
redeeman: naturally for 64bit operation 32bit stuff is not required
redeeman: the reason i am annoyed by that text is, that gentoo's fglrx maintainer has read it
redeeman: and for some stupid reason, is parsing it as if 32bit libs better be there, or fglrx explodes
redeeman: and thus blocks fglrx install on a 64bit no-multilib install
Kano: i thought you wanted to use the oss driver only
redeeman: yeah i do
redeeman: but it still annoys me
Kano: did not notice that is is only crap or what ;)
redeeman: lol it's more stable than fglrx
Kano: thats not so hard
redeeman: the R500 driver works very well
redeeman: you seem to be forgetting i mostly don't care about cuda or 3/4 digit fps numbers
redeeman: features i do prefer: xv working (fglrx/nvidia: fail)
Kano: cuda is nvidia only
redeeman: 2d working (nvidia: fail)
redeeman: stable (fglrx/nvidia: fail)
redeeman: free (fglrx/nvidia: fail)
Kano: yesterday you got some free games with physx, dont know if that will make more games use it
Kano: also there is wine for cuda, did you notice that
Kano: well you would need gf 8 or better
redeeman: erhm, isn't it just that cuda windows stuff now works under wine?
Kano: http://www.winehq.org/?issue=350#CUDA%20Followup:%20it%20works!
Kano: well cuda for linux works since ages, there are just no apps for it basically
redeeman: and which applications do you suggest would benefit from depending on a proprietary solution only implemented by the most unstable piece of software next to windows itself?
Kano: there was a competition to make lame run with cuda
redeeman: and unless you need to encode 10 million hours into mp3, nobody gives a damn :)
Kano: http://cudacontest.nvidia.com/index.cfm?action=contest.download&contestid=2
Kano: http://cudacontest.nvidia.com/index.cfm?action=contest.leaderboard&contestid=2
Kano: only 2 sent in some code
