Phoronix IRC Log: 2008-08-10
Ivanovic: moin
Kano32: hi michaellarabel , look
Kano32: Host/Kernel/OS "Kanotix" running Linux 2.6.27-1-generic i686 [ KANOTIX 2007 Thorhammer ]
Kano32: CPU Info (1) Intel Pentium D clocked at [ 2799.770 MHz ]
Kano32: (2) Intel Pentium D clocked at [ 2799.770 MHz ]
Kano32: Videocard ATI RV410 [Radeon X700] X.Org 7.1.1 [ 1600x1200 @75hz ]
Kano32: Processes 137 | Uptime 1:09 | Memory 212.6/1008.1MB | HDD Size 100GB (33%used) | GLX Renderer RADEON X700/X550 Series | GLX Version 2.1.7769 Release | Client Konversation 1.0.1 | Infobash v2.67.1
Kano32: managed to get 8-7 running with 2.6.27
Ivanovic: sweet
Kano32: the smp call i just guessed, i removed the last value
Kano32: and the paravirt fix is from the one nvidia hack patch
Kano32: http://kanotix.com/files/install-fglrx-debian.sh
Kano32: has it included as dkms patch
Kano32: so you can fetch it as 2.6.27_support.patch (needs 2.6.26_support.patch too)
Kano32: just seek for 8-7
Kano32: if you want to use it for another distro
Kano32: of course that will not fix xserver 1.5 problems ;)
Deanjo: Yay!!! pts finally finished downloading! Too bad there seems to be a bug on the game tests :P
Kano32: Deanjo: how much space was used?
Deanjo: for pts?
Kano32: yes
Deanjo: download-cache is 4.6 Gig
Deanjo: A guy is going to have to use a DVD-9 to make a live DVD for pts
Deanjo: has that on the to do list too
Kano32: thats problematic
Kano32: at least partly
Deanjo: Me making the live DVD or using a DVD-9? :P
Kano32: well the problem is when you want to use ISO9660 standard
Kano32: then you have a 2 GB size limit for single files
Kano32: well you could put it raw on disk and setup pts to use that download folder
Kano32: but i dont think that you have got enough ram to extract it all ;)
Kano32: so when you extract it you have to use tricks
Kano32: like you have to split it into parts which are less than 2gb for one squashfs file
Deanjo: heh got a MacPro yet sitting here with 16 GB
Deanjo: At least for another couple of weeks
Kano32: its not impossible, just needs more work
Deanjo: Nothing is impossible, like you said just more work
Kano32: i am sure i could do it,but nobody would pay it ;)
Deanjo: Ya I keep waiting for a cheque in the mail for every patch I've done over the years....... :P
Kano32: i guess i will create a 2.6.27 live iso for testing
Deanjo: Any plans for making a Phenom optimized Kanotix?
Kano32: nope, i do not own phenom and a kernel optimized for it will not be much faster
Kano32: or do you need a patched kernel with that tlb fix?
Deanjo: Not with the newer phenoms
Kano32: thats clear, then you dont need to optimizie anything
Kano32: you gentoo if you think your apps will run faster
Deanjo: Meh, already have the fastest math as it is with opensuse
Kano32: -O2 optimization for same games gives speed
Deanjo: http://h2np.net/pi/pi_record_e.html
Kano32: i do not own a quad
Kano32: otherwise i would beat it ;)
Deanjo: hehehe bring it on
Kano32: give me the quad
Deanjo: Threaded I really kick the comp http://h2np.net/pi/pi_thread_e.html
Deanjo: I should OC the proc again and submit new results
Kano32: there is no intel quad at 4 ghz or more ;)
Deanjo: 3.2 Ghz is no prob with my phenoms
Kano32: over 4 no problem for 9 series usually
Kano32: with a bit luck and good cooling
Deanjo: Waiting for the new AMD's with 6 meg of cache on 45 nm
Deanjo: All I use for cooling is a Thermalright 120 extreme
Deanjo: With the fan spinning at a lowly 600 RPM
Kano32: btw. amd oc its tpus by default - you see that when you compare the power needed. when you use same speed (mhz) and add maybe 10w to intel (because amd has builtin memory controller) amd still loses badly
Deanjo: Either I get really lucky with my Phenoms for OCing or the stars are in alignment because I have no problem getting them up to 3.2 where most reports say they have issues getting them over 2.7+
Deanjo: And that's with cheap Kingston Value ram
Kano32: thats easy when the cpu is unlocked
Deanjo: Wish I would have benched that Thunder n6550EX w/8360's last week
Deanjo: (wish I could of took it home even more)
Deanjo: 32 cores would have been nice for solitaire :P
Deanjo: Don't you ever sleep in michaellarabel ?
michaellarabel: Deanjo: 7:30AM is late for me
Deanjo: heh, I can't sleep once the sun is up
Deanjo: Has to be something about being brought up on a farm
Kano32: michaellarabel: now you can bench fglrx with 2.6.27
michaellarabel: ???
Deanjo: You guys hear anything if Linux is planning a 2.8 release anytime?
Kano32: Host/Kernel/OS "Kanotix" running Linux 2.6.27-1-generic i686 [ KANOTIX 2007 Thorhammer ]
Kano32: CPU Info (1) Intel Pentium D clocked at [ 2799.770 MHz ]
Kano32: (2) Intel Pentium D clocked at [ 2799.770 MHz ]
Kano32: Videocard ATI RV410 [Radeon X700] X.Org 7.1.1 [ 1600x1200 @75hz ]
Kano32: Processes 144 | Uptime 1:56 | Memory 252.5/1008.1MB | HDD Size 100GB (33%used) | GLX Renderer RADEON X700/X550 Series | GLX Version 2.1.7769 Release | Client Konversation 1.0.1 | Infobash v2.67.1
Kano32: i made a patch
michaellarabel: I have a patch too
Kano32: well you wrote you could not bench because it did not work ;)
Deanjo: 2.8 series of kernel that is
michaellarabel: That was some weeks ago I believe
Kano32: not that much ago
Kano32: when you use paravirt enabled you need an extra hack
Kano32: took that from the nvidia workaround
maligor: curious, new bios from asus and it doesn't complain about E820 bug
maligor: I wonder if it has the acpi table fixed too
Kano32: hmm i guess i removed the wrong value but it still worked ;)
Kano32: will update it
Kano32: the 3rd option not the 4th was removed of smp_call_function
redeeman: Deanjo: i just did that pi test
redeeman: it says 3.5sec
redeeman: that's with my quad @ 2.66
redeeman: i ran send.sh, so i guess the author will update the site some time
redeeman: allthough i find that test highly suspecious
redeeman: as it shows a Q6600 being twice as fast as a Q9450
Erektium: phoronix is cool
Deanjo: If you notice redeeman the Q9450 was also running 32-bit
redeeman: Deanjo: oh
michaellarabel: Deanjo, PTS 1.2 will have LAME 3.98 now that it's released (well, last month), I think you talked about it before
Deanjo: Ya, i'm waiting for the Cuda lame to be released. Interested to see how that works
Ivanovic: is looking forward to have video encoding done by the graphcis card
Deanjo: Actually I see it's been released now
Deanjo: Just wait for BigBang II Ivanovic ;D
Ivanovic: Deanjo: i don't think that nvidia is doing too much for linux support
Ivanovic: so for the moment i won't wait for anything from nvidia especially since i got an ati card
Ivanovic: (okay, intelchip in my tablet)
Deanjo: There is already a SDK for linux
Deanjo: for video
Deanjo: Besides, once openCL takes hold, you won't have to worry about what brand of videocard you have
Ivanovic: yeah, i really hope that we will soon have decent support for opencl and implemented in some great cases
Ivanovic: like eg as videoencoder in mencoder or avidemux
Deanjo: openCL should be out shortly into next year
Deanjo: of course MS couldn't be arsed with following the openCL spec
Deanjo: Now if alsa had a openCL plugin for DSP that would kick ass
Ivanovic: hehe, calculating audio on the graphics card
Ivanovic: sounds interesting...
Ivanovic: ;)
Deanjo: There was a project years ago that started to do that but it fell off the face of the earth
Deanjo: http://www.nforcershq.com/bionicfx-nvidia-gpu-audio-effect-processor/
redeeman: Deanjo: why do you care about running lame on cuda?
Deanjo: Because I can :P
redeeman: theres no realworld benefit to normal people
redeeman: but there is a nasty dependency attached
Deanjo: I don't listen to mp3 as it is redeeman
redeeman: neither do i
Deanjo: Still, the concept is intriguing
redeeman: but this isn't 1996
redeeman: unless you have 1 million files to convert to mp3
redeeman: theres no practical reason to use cuda
Deanjo: Maybe I wanna put the entire library of congress into a audio book :P
redeeman: so?
redeeman: i think you would want to find some narrators first
Deanjo: Na, use a text to speech
redeeman: and i think you'll find that modern processors are alot faster than people can speak it in
redeeman: that would probably be somewhat error prone
Deanjo: hehe, my one buddy made himself a automator script to record his email using VoiceOver, put it into itunes and sync with his iPod
redeeman: crapple crappy products
Deanjo: Lazyness is the mother of all invention
redeeman: i would challenge that
redeeman: many things are invented due to stupidity
Deanjo: lol true
Deanjo: just take a look at any warning label
redeeman: well some warning labels are not stupid
redeeman: allthough i'd guess most american ones are
Deanjo: Ya but there are a lot that are
redeeman: "dont put cat into microwave!"
Deanjo: Caution: Coffee is hot
redeeman: but you won't find such labels on any civilized country
redeeman: which mostly equated to any country where it's not a daily fact of life to sue for 1 billion in damages
Deanjo: Heh, I can walk around any piece of farm machinery no matter where it's from and probably find 10+ of them
redeeman: not in dk you cant :P
Deanjo: looks at a tube of model glue and giggles at the "Not for ingestion" warning
redeeman: glue bottles here typically say if it's toxic or non toxic
Deanjo: I got a kick out of a fuel pump warranty too. It stated "not for usage in space"
redeeman: which i think mostly is to tell parents whether to strictly observe their young childrens usage of it
Deanjo: Ya well parents are 90% of the problem nowdays with kids
redeeman: ?
Deanjo: Bad parenting
Deanjo: or lack of
redeeman: heh, you mean the "park in front of tv" sort of thing?
Deanjo: Ya, or babysitter xbox
netsurf3: hmmm can someone give me a hand with sorting out this fglrx chaos
Deanjo: Even just letting kids roam all night out from the house
netsurf3: it worked then i misunderstood the driver version and attempted to install the binary blob by hand instead of livna
netsurf3: tried reversing changes but its now locked onto indirect rendering
redeeman: Deanjo: that would depend on how old they are
Deanjo: My younger sister finished teaching college, during her internship she was teaching a Grade 2 class. Some kid told her to "fuck off". They know they can get away with that crap nowdays
redeeman: lol yeah
redeeman: i agree, some kids are out of control
redeeman: when i was in second grade actually
Deanjo: When I was in school, you told a teacher that and you would get a good backhand
redeeman: our teacher announced she was going to be away some time, due to her having a kid
Deanjo: and then get home and get it twice as bad
redeeman: and one kid said: "so who knocked you up this time?!"
netsurf3: bastard
redeeman: there were 2 kids in our class that were really bastardish
redeeman: completely out of control
Deanjo: Nowday's the parents immediately side with their kid no matter what happened
Deanjo: and then sue
maligor: even in canada?
redeeman: haha that sounds like something in the states
Deanjo: My parents were both teachers for 35 years, they retired in 1990. Ask them if they would teach now and they both say "hell no"
netsurf3: :(
Deanjo: My younger sister decided to be a stay at home mother after she saw the attitude of kids nowdays
Deanjo: There was a case about 4 years ago where a teacher told a kid he would have to stay after school because he was acting up in class. The kid took a swing at the teacher. The teacher put him in a arm lock and the kids parents tried to sue the school.
netsurf3: christ...
Deanjo: Ya the motivation to become a teacher nowdays isn't all that great
netsurf3: my girlfriends sister is going into it
Deanjo: A couple of years ago I caught a couple of kids 12 and 16 going along the street smashing car windows to see what was in the glovebox. Chased them down, the 12 year old threw a hatchet at me and the 16 year old when searched had a home made shiv.
netsurf3: shiv?
Deanjo: Homemade knive out of metal
Deanjo: knife
netsurf3: thats crazy
netsurf3: you police or just concerned citizen
Deanjo: The 16 year old got 2 years in jail and the 12 year old got 200 hours of community service
Deanjo: Just pissed of citizen
Deanjo: off
netsurf3: understandably so
Deanjo: I was watching TV late at night around 4 am when I heard the smashing of windows. Got in the car with sweats and cowboy boots on, got the wife to come along and drive, chased them down while on the phone with the cops and the chase ended when the boys met the k-9 squad
Deanjo: 132 vehicles had their windows smashed out that night
netsurf3: nice one mate
Deanjo: I'm all for bringing back bootcamp for youths
Erektium: thank good i live in finland
Erektium: god*
netsurf3: is finland safe then?
Erektium: ofc
Erektium: =)
netsurf3: i wanna go finland
netsurf3: go in a decent sauna
netsurf3: never had one before :)
Erektium: ;/
Erektium: I just had yesterday +80C
Deanjo: You guys still have mandatory armed forces enlistment in Finland don't you?
netsurf3: whats that?
netsurf3: i remember someone from finland telling me about it
Deanjo: You have to serve with the armed forces for so many years by law netsurf3
netsurf3: hmmm
netsurf3: spooky
Deanjo: It's something I would like to see done here in Canda
netsurf3: that means they can theoretically draft ANYONE
Deanjo: Canada
Erektium: yep
Deanjo: Would straighten out a lot of kids
Erektium: we do
netsurf3: that said doesnt that mean all people are trained in the art of killing?
Erektium: Deanjo, it's actually 6months minimum
Deanjo: More important they learn discipline and responsibility
netsurf3: thats not bad
netsurf3: i'd do that for the experience i think
netsurf3: few kinks in my personality i'd like to fix ;)
netsurf3: brb guys trying to fix my direct rendering
Erektium: every man has to go to army
Deanjo: Even if it was done on as a reserve forces it would help
Deanjo: I'd like to see a kid tell a CO to "fuck off"
Deanjo: They would learn fast
maligor: Deanjo, yeah, we have to serve 10 years, Erektium is telling you lies
Erektium: ;D
maligor: technically it's 12months
Deanjo: I know serving for me, ironed out a few kinks in my personality
maligor: some branches just shorten it to 6months
Deanjo: 7 years for me
Deanjo: then I got married....
Erektium: some even go to jail becaus they refuse to go to army
maligor: probably a bit different in canada
Deanjo: If I was single would still be in the services
maligor: here it was just mostly a waste of time
maligor: ancient weapons and friggen cold in the winter
Erektium: yep
Deanjo: Cold starts at -40 here :P
maligor: depends on the wind
Deanjo: heh wind here is a way of life on the prairies
Erektium: winter isn't so cold anymore
maligor: it did hit nearly -30C on one day when I was in the army camp
Deanjo: We can hit -50 during the winter and close to + 50 in the summer
maligor: probably more common up north
maligor: sounds a bit like siberia
Deanjo: Pretty much
Erektium: people always exaggerate the coldnes of finland
Deanjo: We had a couple of days two years ago with windchill was -70
Deanjo: 6 people died in that storm from exposure
maligor: the sort of days not to drink alcohol too much
Deanjo: Stupid asses left their vehicle after getting stuck
jramskov: Deanjo: where do you live?
jramskov: -40c?
Deanjo: Saskatchewan
Deanjo: in Canada
Deanjo: Electric vehicles don't do so well here lol
jramskov: it's amazing what being surrounded by water means
jramskov: hugs the gulf stream
Deanjo: The city of Saskatoon bought some hybrid buses a couple of years ago, the batteries were shot in 8 months
Deanjo: Ugggh I couldn't handle that humidity jramskov
jramskov: << denmark
Deanjo: Living at the base in Toronto damn near killed me
jramskov: tiny country surrounded by water
Deanjo: Ya, I get a kick out of watching the news when Vancouver has a cold streak getting just below freezing
Deanjo: pansies :P
jramskov: hehe
jramskov: I believe I live about as north as you do
jramskov: or at least around the same as Edmonton IIRC
Deanjo: 52° 10' N here
jramskov: but I believe the coldest ever recorded here is around -30c
Deanjo: I'm originally from a bit further up north
jramskov: 55°43′N
Deanjo: But it tends to get a bit colder going further south where there is nothing to break the wind. Up north the forests slow the wind quite a bit
jramskov: @ me
Deanjo: We have a saying here "Saskatchewan is the only place where you can watch your dog running away from home for 3 days in a row"
Deanjo: A curve in the road is a highlight here
jramskov: lol
jramskov: pretty flat there
jramskov: not that DK have any mountains
Deanjo: My older sister lives closer to the US border. When I visit her, there is a 2 hour stretch of road with absolutely no deviation from a straight line.
Deanjo: What a boring drive
Deanjo: It's a 200k drag strip
Deanjo: Not even a bloody hill
jramskov: hehe
Deanjo: NASA could probably use it as a reference for a straight line :P
jramskov: :p
jramskov: you can reach the shore in much less than 2 hours from anywhere in dk
Deanjo: Ironically it has to be one of the worse highways for accidents because of people falling asleep at the wheel
jramskov: :/
Deanjo: michaellarabel, I think we need a floppy disk benchmark in pts :P
Deanjo: "My teac kicks your panasonic"
Deanjo: BTW, you guys notice that flash in 64-bit leaks memory like a sieve after a while?
maligor: you mean in nspluginwrapper?
Deanjo: Ya
Deanjo: likes to leave dead processes and then leak
redeeman: wtf
redeeman: this is weird as hell
Deanjo: what's up?
redeeman: my box had ram errors
redeeman: but now when i had time to look at debugging it
redeeman: it's gone
maligor: flash is just plain buggy and nspluginwrapper a mistake
Deanjo: Power supply maybe giving issues redeeman ?
redeeman: i don't think so
redeeman: but i don't know yet
redeeman: and now i cant even debug
Deanjo: I had a system like that, under load ram would error
redeeman: this was without load
Deanjo: I would assume you factored out heat already as well
redeeman: yes the modules are not hot
redeeman: and i have watercooling on all chipset + cpu
Deanjo: Maybe your chipset just doesn't like your ram
Deanjo: seen that a few times
redeeman: X48
Deanjo: Is the ram high voltage ram?
redeeman: 2.2v
redeeman: kingston hyperx
redeeman: it's on the gigabyte qvl
Deanjo: Might be that your board is having a hard time supplying that
maligor: there are low end X48 boards?
maligor: I expect the X48 boards wouldn't have any trouble supplying 2.2v
Deanjo: Ya but it doesn't take much of a deviation to start screwing with things
Deanjo: You could try less agressive timings
redeeman: i tried
Deanjo: Maybe Gigabytes energy saving is causing the issue
redeeman: it's disabled
maligor: maybe there's a blue smoke leak somewhere
Deanjo: k, just throwing out ideas :P
Deanjo: rusty nic cables :P
maligor: I had weird memory compability issues with this board at first, fixed in bios updates
maligor: it just caused flaky startup
Deanjo: I'll never forget one tech I had, he convinced a customer that as more data gets put on the HD it gets heavier
redeeman: LOOOOOL
maligor: someone must've used a stupid metaphor
Deanjo: I damn near freaked out with my M3N-HT motherboards, it does a weird thing when you change a bios settings and save it shuts off the system and then 5 seconds later powers back up
maligor: yeah, same thing here
redeeman: gigabyte likes that aswell
redeeman: and intel boards
Deanjo: First time I thought I screwed the MB for sure
redeeman: something i never noticed on AMD boards
maligor: this also always fails to reboot with ctrl-alt-del after flashing the bios
Deanjo: you have the same MB maligor ?
maligor: P5K WS here
Deanjo: ahh
Deanjo: Nice of Asus to even mention it
maligor: mention what?
Deanjo: The powering down. Had all AMD users confused as hell for a while
Deanjo: I know there were a lot of people that RMA'd the boards because of it
maligor: probably a intel chipset design feature
maligor: I'll probably go back to AMD once they get those 45nm parts for sale
maligor: something about intel is just too greasy
Deanjo: I scored a deal on UPS batteries today, APC wanted $150 for replacement batteries, I got the same exact brand new batteries today at the local surplus store for $20
maligor: sell them to APC for $120
Deanjo: lol I should
Deanjo: Got pretty good life out of the last ones 5 years
maligor: are they propitiatory?
Deanjo: Na same damn batteries they use in home security system
Deanjo: s
maligor: err.. order them from a electronics shop?
maligor: if it's a standard form, you might be able to find them, heh
Deanjo: Ya the local electronics shop rapes you and doesn't even take you out to dinner
Deanjo: They wanted more then APC
maligor: heh
Deanjo: They are the only electronics shop in the province anymore and they take advantage of it
Deanjo: $15 for a bloody 555 timer
Deanjo: I just about fell to the floor when they told me that
Deanjo: I used to buy them by the handful for $5
Deanjo: Too bad because electronics used to be a hobby of mine
Deanjo: Too damn expensive here now
maligor: a 555 timer ic?
Deanjo: Ya
maligor: I see one for 55 cents here, too lazy to check other models
Deanjo: Oh I know they are cheap as shit, it's just because in a pinch when you need one the local electronics shop gouges you.
Deanjo: After that I requested a product sample from TI and they sent me 100 of them for free lol
maligor: well, that's the local electronics shop here :P
maligor: $15 would be ridiculous
Deanjo: At least when Radio Shack was still open here it kept their prices in check. Even though at that time they were still selling them for $3
maligor: why don't you just order from digikey or something?
Deanjo: Same situation is here for small motor parts. 1 supplier in the province and he soaks you for the parts
Deanjo: Heh, I needed one and needed it today
Deanjo: couldn't wait for a mail order
Deanjo: otherwise I would have
Deanjo: The ILS system at my home town airport blew the one it had. Needed it pretty much immediately. 4 hours driving for a 555 timer
Deanjo: Back to the overhaul kit for my lawn mower.... the local guy wanted $200 for a kit, brand new engine cost $170
Deanjo: Ordered it straight from briggs and straton for $35
maligor: depressing isn't it
Deanjo: Ya it is
Deanjo: Especially when I see the $75 an hour labour charge for small motor mechanics lol
maligor: probably the problem is warehouses when supplying a large area with few people
maligor: or a part of it
Deanjo: ya that's a big part of it. Saskatchewan has massive land area and less then a million people
Deanjo: Although that is changing quickly. We are having a oil boom here and property values are going insane
maligor: only one electronics shop for a million people?
Deanjo: A house that sold for 80,000 3 years ago is going for $300k now
maligor: mad.. if it's friggen cold there too
Deanjo: Ya that's it maligor 1 shop
maligor: who'd want to live in a icebox ;)
Deanjo: People are getting approved for $200k mortgages and can't find anything to buy
maligor: they could move farther north
Deanjo: Hell the fast food joints don't stay open past 9 pm anymore because they can't find employees to work that late even @ $17 an hour
Deanjo: One fast food place is offering 4 weeks paid vacation and a $3000 after trip to Mexico after working only 6 months
Deanjo: Local strip club is offering free breast implants after 3 months lol
maligor: going for the free breast implants?
redeeman: free breast implants?
redeeman: did i miss something?
Deanjo: That's what the local strip club is offering to the waitresses after 3 months because employees are at a shortage here
maligor: oh.. not to waiters
Deanjo: lol never asked about that
Deanjo: althought the local gay bar may have something like that as well
redeeman: wth
Deanjo: lol I've got a buddy here that runs a nightclub, his head bouncer is a crossdresser, when I asked why he said "Because no guy wants to admit they got beaten up by a guy in a skirt."
redeeman: LOL
redeeman: where the hell do you live?!
Deanjo: Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada
redeeman: i always suspected canadians were insane
Deanjo: They don't call us Crazy Canucks for nothing
Deanjo: It still throws you back when you see this 300 pound guy at the door with a Catholic school girls uniform :P
niklauz: does anyone on chan have a favorite linux-based san/nas ? i'm looking for advice
redeeman: what exactly do you mean?
redeeman: a finished system or?
niklauz: i'm not sure, redeeman, i'm trying to figure an intelligent way to virtualize my storage
redeeman: i personally like NAS
niklauz: thats my bigger question, but the one i was asking was more toward a pre-rolled distro, but now i'm wondering if i should try to build it myself
redeeman: imo it's such a simple task that you won't find a "pre-rolled nas dist"
redeeman: atleast not one that seems suited for your use
niklauz: i was looking at freenas, which looks good, i just prefer something based on linux, but it's not a strict requirement i guess i'm just more familiar
redeeman: freenas i think is more oriented towards media/normal usage
redeeman: or wait, what exactly was it your need was?
redeeman: what would it be used for?
niklauz: i was thinking more like nas/san/iscsi w/ volume mgmt, and revision control a/o backup mgmt
niklauz: i'd like to use it as a storage farm for a lab environment w/ a lot of vm
niklauz: so they can all run from there, but also for media, and maybe more
niklauz: i already have a raid5+lvm setup and i'd like to put it on top of that
niklauz: which is why i prefer linux, b/c im confident i can go cmdline if i ever needed to
redeeman: well revision control isn't something productions filesystems have
niklauz: :) i was thinking about playing w/ git actually
redeeman: i see
redeeman: well san/iscsi is like.. enterprise stuff
redeeman: it will cost you a heap more than nas
niklauz: i'm probably going to just run it all in a virtual machine, no extra purchases
niklauz: it will cost a lot of time (probably) but no money
niklauz: linux rox
