Phoronix IRC Log: 2008-07-23

Ivanovic: moin
starkmjolk: lo :)
Ivanovic: looks like the atombios branch of radeonhd was merged into git master
Ivanovic: that is: at todays update there was the new file src/atombios_crtc.c listed which was not there in master checkouts before
Ivanovic: hmm, nothing mentioned about merging of atombios branch
Ivanovic: (in the git log that is)
starkmjolk: I heard that it was expected to happen sooner or later but nothing more really...
Ivanovic: at least some part of crt control is now done via atombiaos in radeonhd master
evocallaghan: Hi
evocallaghan: I was wondering if I could be a writer for Phoronix ? This would be in regards to OpenSolaris. The following URL is my blog; http://ultravioletos.blogspot.com/
vadi2: evocallaghan: ask 'michaellarabel' when he comes on that
Zeqadious: Probably in Portland and the time is only 630 am for him if he is
evocallaghan: Ah yes..
evocallaghan: Has this IRC got a back log ?
vadi2: Yeah somewhere
evocallaghan: Good
evocallaghan: I'll leave my email and hope he reads it and gets back to me
evocallaghan: victoredwardocallaghan _AT_ gmail _DOT_ com
Kano: hi, is here somebody with a splashtop enabled board?
Kano: preferred somebody without ssd on board
michaellarabel: evocallaghan1: Are you there
Ivanovic: hi michaellarabel
michaellarabel: Hello
Ivanovic: michaellarabel: it would be *really* good to add a "real" marker when using trondheim-12
Ivanovic: michaellarabel: currently the version displayed is 1.0.4 in the results page
Ivanovic: though it is the trondheim-12 branch
michaellarabel: Yes, I have about a dozen patches sitting here on this notebook and it will call it 1.2r1 once I get back to the office. Git never likes this laptop
Ivanovic: :)
Ivanovic: already wanted to ask about my "patch" for the ut2004 demo
Ivanovic: ;)
michaellarabel: Remind me next week about that
Ivanovic: sure
evocallaghan1: michaellarabel:Hello ?
michaellarabel: Hi, you had an OpenSolaris question or something?
evocallaghan1: michaellarabel:Um no. I work on OpenSolaris and I would just like to make the offer of being a writer for your site..
michaellarabel: Ah, yes, we do accept freelance articles / guest posts.
evocallaghan1: As I am rather up to date about anything OpenSolais related. /me addictic ;)
evocallaghan1: By the way; I didn't see anything in the news about OpenSolaris2008.11 yet, apart from the new iso respin of snv93. You maybe intertested in the tracker .. here; http://defect.opensolaris.org/bz/show_bug.cgi?id=2413
michaellarabel: Not many bugs blocking it...
evocallaghan1: Ah just added quite a few just now
evocallaghan1: Its a new tracker so.. maybe over the comming weeks when people such as myself who can be bothered to stick stuff on there..
evocallaghan1: I better go to bed now.
evocallaghan1: michaellarabel:Drop me a email if you like to talk more.. We are in quite diff time zones ;)
michaellarabel: Sure, can you send an email to michael@phoronix.com? I don't have your email address written down and in the middle of a conference.
evocallaghan1: Sure, i'll drop you a quick one. However I must go to bed now. Been working on the ext3 port to solaris the whole day :p
Ivanovic: michaellarabel: any news how many months it will take until the r6xx 3d specs will be out?
Ivanovic: or is amd/ati waiting till novell has mesa/drm for r6xx ready, too
Ivanovic: ;)
Ivanovic: (i just remember that some month ago it was said "yeah, will probably be read in the next days, maybe this week...", this seems to be really over now)
michaellarabel: Ivanovic: They hit an IP snag
Ivanovic: *argh*
njdoyle: That seems to be a theme with late deliveries lately...
Ivanovic: michaellarabel: is it this bad, that is: can the problematic part not be left out for the moment?
michaellarabel: Ivanovic: It's blocking the documentation and source-code currently, yes.
Ivanovic: this just shows again why i really dislike so called "software patents"
jramskov: that sucks!
michaellarabel: I may have NVIDIA's strategy confirmed almost....
jramskov: ohhh...
jramskov: any more info about what kind of IP snag?
JanC: jramskov: what new features does it have over the previous generation?
jramskov: huh?
JanC: jramskov: if they can't release specs for the r6xx but they can for the previous generation of GPUs, the problem must be in the new features...
jramskov: true
JanC: I only use Intel graphics, so I don't really know much about ATI (or Nvidia) stuff though ;)
jramskov: my thinkpad is with intel gfx as well :)
vadi2: my thinkpad is with ati.. my excuse is that it's too old to be supported by their binary driver though, heh.
jramskov: hehe
rramalho: oh dear... i've had a bad time with fedora 9
rramalho: :s
Asmadeus: Hello - did anyone have a chance to install the ati drivers on slackware with a 2.6.26 kernel ? (I've found a patch for this kernel and changed it a bit so it applies, but that didn't work; and I'm a bit clueless since I've had the same quality with the fglrx drivers correctly installed on OpenSuSE/Debian than when the install failed (meaning, amdcccle and aticonfig seem to work, and when the installation worked I had an horrible refresh rate (i.e.
michaellarabel: Hello
vadi2: So if you have memory-hungry apps crashing randomly, and memtest showing a bunch of memory errors (like 40k I think), what do you do? Buy new ram?
Asmadeus: If memtest shows this many, that sounds like it :(
Ivanovic: exactly
JanC: could be your motherboard too, but most likely you need new RAM...
Ivanovic: though first you could try to simply increase voltage used for ram
Ivanovic: this *might* help a little
starkmjolk: hmm, quick question. Trying to get an nvidia binary blob running after an ubuntu upgrade, but it is strugling to work
starkmjolk: I've found the problem in dmesg: API mismatch: the client has the version 173.14.05, but this kernel module has the version 71.86.04.
starkmjolk: and I want to get rid of the legacy kernel module, but can't find it and my head is tired :)
Ivanovic: it is probably in /lib/modules
starkmjolk: ok, found this path: /lib/modules/2.6.24-19-generic/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia.ko but that file has a new modification date
vadi2: Ivanovic: how can I do that?
vadi2: I also installed this ram like... just 5 months ago. :(
Ivanovic: vadi2: do into the bios of your motherboard and raise the respective voltage by 0.1V
Asmadeus: It's in your BIOS settings if it allows it, probably
Ivanovic: s/do/go
vadi2: Ok, I'll go check
Ivanovic: though you should first remove the sticks of ram one by one
Ivanovic: and check which one is the problematic one
vadi2: alright
vadi2: can I install 2 different types of ram sticks?
Ivanovic: sure
vadi2: ie, I had a pair of 2gb's and upgraded to a pair 4 gb's. still got the 2
vadi2: alright
Ivanovic: afk again
starkmjolk: ah, now its sorted. thanks for the hint Ivanovic
Milyardo: Hows OSCON micheal?
michaellarabel: Eh... Alright
Milyardo: Oh?
michaellarabel: Not too great this year.
Milyardo: How sad, did ATi make an appearance at OSCON this year?
michaellarabel: No
Milyardo: That would have made it interesting I'm Sure
Milyardo: Maybe next year
Milyardo: Drizzle thought drizzle was a moderatly intersting annoucement
michaellarabel: No, not really... the folks here aren't that technical or oriented towards X.Org, aside from one of the talks.
Milyardo: OSCON has always been enterprise oriented
Milyardo: Not surprising since it is hosted by O'Reilly
Kano: anybody here with asus boards?
kukavaan: me
Ivanovic: n8
Kano: which one
Kano: maybe asrock too
kukavaan: I've got a p5ld2 SE
vadi2: Ivanovic: I've located the troublesome stick and took it out
vadi2: Ivanovic: What should I do with it? throw it away or can something be done?
Kano: hmm a bit old, but try it if you like
Kano: do you have got an usbstick near you
kukavaan: hmm
kukavaan: yup
Kano: http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11474&page=3
Ivanovic: vadi2: check if you still got gurantee on it and ask the manufacturer
Kano: there is the script, it is for 32 bit, if you use 64 bit change the lines which cp grub stage1/2 files to correct positions
Kano: the IMG file you need is from the express gate update zip
vadi2: Ivanovic: how can I do that? I got it from a laptop vendor
Kano: has a size of 256 mb
Ivanovic: vadi2: uhm, this is a new stick or one originally shipped with the laptop?
Ivanovic: if it is new: call the shop where you bought it and tell them that this memory stick is borked
vadi2: Ivanovic: I ordered the stick from the same vendor as an upgrade heh
vadi2: so sorta both
vadi2: and ok, I guess I can do that
Ivanovic: and i am really off to bed now, n8
Kano: https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/catalyst_806_linux.html
Kano: thats what current ati rss feeds shows for 8-7 driver
Kano: maybe the live on the moon ;)
Kano: btw. it is verify, the script + extracted splashtop works with asus p5k-e...
vadi2: "Your name server, at 204.15.185.225, appears vulnerable to DNS Cache Poisoning.". Time to setup that OpenDNS I suppose...
Phr3x0r_: Hi all, what's happening?
