Phoronix IRC Log: 2008-06-08
michaellarabel: Ivanovic: I can add a "remove" option, right now there is none.
Deanjo: Hey michaellarabel, would it be possible for you to add drive selection when running the IOZone bench standalone?
copper: I don't get that iozone bench
Deanjo: What don't you get about it?
copper: I get insanely high read speed values, way higher than what my drives are capable of
Deanjo: That's because it's doing the test with the cache enabled
copper: what's the point then?
Deanjo: I believe there is a switch that allows you to disable using the cache.
Kano: hi uncle_fungus
uncle_fungus: hi Kano
Deanjo: refrains from replying to "DimStar> Hi everybody... I have a problem: my mouse got stuck.." Soooooo many comebacks.....
copper: you're like Chandler… "too… many… jokes…"
Deanjo: heh, sometimes the temptation is too much
Deanjo: but usually I just think to myself "What would peeps on slashdot say to that?" and then do the exact opposite
copper: I love /. comments
copper: makes himself an espresso
Deanjo: Awwwwe..... nobody has gone off on my "Windows is just a hobbyist OS" reply yet
copper: you're transparent
Deanjo: Well really think of it. What OS has the most "hobby type" of applications ie: games, etc etc
copper: on hardware review sites you can't get past Windows + Intel + overclocking + games
Deanjo: Linux on the other hand is still primarily used for industrial, productivity, business critical uses
copper: linux? lame. AMD? suXorz. You don't overclock? Getouttahere.
copper: I could say the same about Irix :)
Deanjo: I would say Windows is more of a hobby os then any *nix
copper: ya except 90% of the world *works* on Windows
uncle_fungus: copper: amd/intel is swings and roundabouts. It used to be the other way around, and it will be again
Deanjo: 90% of the world is stupid
copper: Deanjo: you mean like the 90% of air travellers who don't mind the brand new full body scanners?
Deanjo: and just follows blindly like sheep
uncle_fungus: Deanjo: Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.
uncle_fungus: ;)
Deanjo: So true
copper: You can't call uninformed people stupid. They don't know about Windows/linux/whatever. It doesn't take a PhD to understand what a full body scan implicates though.
copper: People aren't so much stupid as they don't make use of their brains.
Deanjo: Another thing that irks me is when they say "linux is harder". Which simply isn't true. The hardest part is knowing that you have to forget what you know and look at it with a open mind
Deanjo: Same with any OS
copper: Ya, go for it, Neo! FREE YOUR MIND!
uncle_fungus: well that's it, they just got to realise the Linux is not Windows
copper: What if he makes it?
uncle_fungus: that*
copper: Nobody makes it on their first jump.
copper: Yeah but what if he does?
Deanjo: Well like I say, my 9 year old easily does her own linux installations.
copper: maybe today
copper: it took me easily two years to switch from Windows to linux completely
copper: that was in 2000-2002 though
Deanjo: Ya it took me a while too, experimented for a while, then dropped it, experimented again, then dropped it, etc
copper: And now for the completely novel question: IS LINUX READY FOR TEH DESKTOPZ?
copper: I can't believe how much Digg sucks…
Deanjo: But truth be known, back in those days, linux WAS harder. Lacking in documentation, hardware support, etc etc
copper: I feel dirty everytime I read it.
Deanjo: A lot of conceptions about linux is still being based on how it was 10 years ago
Deanjo: Some stuff though supported in the kernel could really be dropped though (such as ISA support)
Deanjo: I don't think there is really anybody running a Gravis Ultrasound on a Quad-core :D
copper: I don't know wtf AGP is still selected by default and can't be removed unless you select "EMBEDDED"
Deanjo: System is reserving ram for it copper ?
copper: also the kernel needs a database matching configurations to hardware
copper: yeah, 64 MiB
copper: I have 4 gigs, but still
Deanjo: Ya but at least there are still a ton of AGP systems out there
copper: lol, I'm tagging some albums, and stumbled on this AC/DC song: "Up to My Neck in You"
copper: so dirty :P
copper: I guess there should be a Parental Advisory for titles themselves :D
Deanjo: replies back to yet another "Can I apply a deltaiso from Suse 11.0 to Suse 10.3
Deanjo: I swear I could have been rich answering that question already
Deanjo: Think I'll just make a reply button in xchat just for that question and link it to a hotkey
copper: Deanjo: have you seen the Swingtown pilot?
Deanjo: nope
copper: promising
copper: it's about a couple of swingers in the 70's :)
copper: oddly enough it's not from either HBO or Showtime
Deanjo: hmmm, anybody know if the gparted cd supports mdraid?
Deanjo: sorry dmraid
Kano: it does not
Deanjo: Well that blows
copper: So, would say that's rather gay?
Kano: well i would use cfdisk
copper: would you*
Kano: then
Kano: dmraid -an
Kano: dmraid -ay
Kano: format manually partitions then
Deanjo: meh I'll just use suse's partitioner
Kano: do so
copper: All roads lead to Suse, eh.
Deanjo: hey it works
Kano: fedora has also resize funtion for dmraid, but i prefer the manual way
Deanjo: be back in a bit. Got to setup the raid (first got to figure out which physical disk is which)
copper: I didn't realize so many AC/DC song titles refered to sex
copper: songs*
copper: er, no. Song titles.
copper: "Shake Your Foundations", "First Blood", "Sink The Pink", "Playing With Girls"… and that's only for one album
copper: Obsessed much?
Deanjo: Kano, you still here?
Kano: i am
Deanjo: You ever see this happen with dmraid? http://pastebin.ca/1042134
Deanjo: It only happens when I try to set up a raid 0 on my 500 Gig seagates
Kano: you may not try to access sdX directly.
Kano: only via /dev/mapper/xxx
Kano: these errors come from hal
Deanjo: Why only on those drives? Other drives work fine
Kano: well on the first drive there is the partition table, but the entries are for raid not for the single drive, therefore you get those errors
Kano: you have to ignore those
Kano: do not try to use single drives at all
Kano: then you want to mount a parttiion the only way to do that is to mount it via fstab or manuall over the dev/mapper/... devices
Deanjo: Ya I know, the device here is /dev/mapper/nvidia_bhiicbdd
Kano: cfdisk /dev/mapper/nvidia_bhiicbdd
Kano: create partitions
Deanjo: did that
Kano: dmraid -an
Kano: dmraid -ay
Kano: then you have the single partitons as entry too
Kano: then youcan format em
Kano: it did not get a dhcp request
Kano: err wrong channel; 9
Deanjo: K did all of that, gonna reboot see what happens
Deanjo: http://global.phoronix-test-suite.com/index.php?k=profile&u=deanjo-8897-27642-20171
Deanjo: Just a wee bit of a difference
Kano: michaellarabel: what was the problemw with fc9 and ati? the xserver?
michaellarabel: Kano: Yeah, without downgrading the X Server.
Kano: what problem is it, does ignoreabi help or xserver crash?
bulletxt: is this the official phoronix channel? at least set a topic :D
michaellarabel: bulletxt: Yes, a topic will be set once ajax does it or sets it up accordingly.
bulletxt: michaellarabel: ok I was just joking :)
maxfactor: hi
Maledictvm: Greetings.
michaellarabel: Hi
Maledictvm: Hi Michael.
dmb: hello
dmb: ajax, you should register this channel as a group
benpicco: a topic would be nice, too
michaellarabel: He's been MIA for a few days, hopefully he'll set it all up accordingly soon.
Toxicity999: Adding to autojoin. Hey people.
michaellarabel: Hi
bahadunn: hi
Toxicity999: So is it going to be strictly on topic, anything general about linux, or sort of anything goes within reason in here?
michaellarabel: Loosely managed... You're allowed to discuss anything potentially relevant. That's the way it's been going for the past couple of days at least.
bahadunn: sounds good to me
Toxicity999: Cool.
Toxicity999: Heh, feed readers are starting to pick it up.
moparx: indeed
bahadunn: I just checked my feed reader and here I am :)
michaellarabel: Great :)
mrplow: the test suite is great guys, thanks
michaellarabel: mrplow: You're welcome!
thalin: woohoo, it's public, I can talk about roadrunner breaking the petaflop barrier now :)
thalin: go 1350 super cluster team! :D
dmb: so i wonder if nvidia is ever going to competitive with amd/ati and release specs for their cards
ordchar: let the idling begin!
thalin: nobody wants to know about the world's first petaflop computer? :(
thalin: I'm so very sad
ordchar: thalin, don't be, don't be
zgold: G'day
rexy_: morning
Deanjo: Holy smokes the room exploded
zgold: linux users unite
dmb: ...
Deanjo: All 29 of them? :P
rexy_: actually i just came across the site while looking around how well the newer ati cards are supported
Deanjo: For some, very well, for others not so much
rexy_: well from what i gathered DRI works on radeonhd drivers, sortof
rexy_: not for all cards,it seems some documentation is still pending to be released
rexy_: but it looks quite promising at least
Deanjo: It will have to be more then "promising" before I switch to ATI
rexy_: well from what i gathered DRI wasnt enabled in the radeonhd drivers for more then one or two weeks
rexy_: ago
dandel: rexy_, the dri takes time, i believe whole heartedly that it'll be ready in about 3 or 4 months... after all most of the important features for the driver comming along within acceptable margins of time.
rexy_: dandel, oh yeah i didnt expect it to be usable, it's probably not even out of unstable, but progress seems to be rather fast
Deanjo: When they get crossfire and some good support for GPGPU then I'll switch...... maybe
dandel: yes, that's why i said 3 or 4 months for a usable driver for the most part, at least on the r500 cards.
rexy_: ah, i was looking at the 3650M
dandel: the main features i want are Doom 3/Quake 4 to be playable, TV out, and relatively good performance with wine.
rexy_: yeah
dandel: xVideo extension is already in place, from what i read, and TV out also seems to be ready.
rexy_: well poorer performance isnt a real issue, my current system is about 4 times as slow as what i'm looking at so it'll be an improvement none the less
dandel: yea, well that's expected, considering it's currently an ongoing wip.
rexy_: oh i dont have an ati now
rexy_: currently still have an old 6600 nvidia
dandel: yea, well i am using an r500 series ati card personally.
dandel: i had issues with the 8.5 driver from ati ( rendered 1600x1200 resolution unusable and had many other bugs )
ordchar: i've had pretty much every possible problem with every possible driver for my ati r500 card
ordchar: and still i'm hopeful for the future ;)
rexy_: with gflrx or the radeonhd driver or?
rexy_: dont really know what the r500 stands for,
dandel: the open source default for 8.04 ubuntu leads to white desktop for me.
rexy_: Xsomething series no doubt :P
dandel: login screen is fine, but the desktop after login is nothin but white.
Deanjo: Are you sure it just isn't a minimalist desktop :P
dandel: no.
dandel: it's not.
dandel: i changed it over to a vesa driver ( which works) and it'll login just fine.
ordchar: rexy_, i've had every driver under the sun, :)
ordchar: r500 is the chipset generation ..
dandel: i think mine is an r580... hmm... 1 sec.
dandel: oh yep... it is exactly that, the radeon x1900 :)
lightrush: hi phoronix
lightrush: :)
ordchar: hey lightrush
lightrush: what is this #phoronix :[freenode-info] if you need to send private messages, please register: http://freenode.net/faq.shtml#privmsg
lightrush: I didnt know Freenode required reg for priv msg
lightrush: :|
dmb: yup
ordchar: lightrush, yeah, an extra insentive to get people to register i'm sure
ordchar: saves a lot of drama about nick stealing
lightrush_: reg done :)
lightrush_: I usually sit in #ubuntu
ordchar: o poor you :p
lightrush_: and never had to reg but its always good to be regged
lightrush_: well lately I speak rather than ask there - but I am not there yet :)
ordchar: i don't always find #ubuntu as helpful as can be, but that's typically because i ask bad questions :)
lightrush: do u have any exp in suspend issues ?
ordchar: i basically turn to #ubuntu when i need to know the "ubuntu way" of doing something, where something typically is too exotic :D
ordchar: lightrush, limited experience with suspen
ordchar: i had to adjust some configs for fglrx to suspend/resume once
ordchar: but usually i don't find the suspend/resume stuff worth the hassle
lightrush: :D I am getting there too
lightrush: I have Intel/NV combo and cant get it to work very well and I will probably just forfeit it until Interpid Ibex and pray when it comes out
copper: morning
ordchar: oi copper
