SLAX 6.0.0 RC3

SLAX is one of our favorite Linux distributions so when SLAX 6.0 RC3 was released you can be sure that had caught our attention. New in SLAX 6.0.0 RC3 is the Linux 2.6.21.1 kernel, full NTFS write support, and upgrades to Slackware current. This mini LiveCD distribution is definitely an interesting distribution worth trying out for an older PC or if you are simply looking for a lean and efficient distribution.

Litrix v7.4 Linux LiveCD

We've never heard of this Brazilian Linux distribution but decided to give it a shot with the recent release of Litrix v7.4. The Litrix LiveCD is based upon Gentoo Linux and with the new additions in v7.4 being NTFS write support, support for wireless networking, i686 optimizations, NVIDIA's binary blob pre-installed, and Beryl integration.

Fedora 7 Test 4

Today's release marks the final test release for Fedora 7 before its final debut on May 24. Some of the changes making up this release includes the implementation of the new wireless stack, a 2.6.21-rc7 based kernel, and reverting away from the new Echo icon set. Fedora 7 has shaped up very nicely, but it hasn't become the Linux knight in shining armor we once sought.

KateOS 3.6 Beta

As was outlined in a previous Phoronix article, we have been evaluating KateOS as a possible Linux distribution to append to our arsenal of OS compatibility tests. Recently KateOS 3.6 Beta was introduced and we have went over this distribution with a fine tooth comb. KateOS 3.6 Beta is a huge improvement for the KateOS team with the improvements to the LiveCD as well as for the installation process. Shipping with this beta is everything from OpenOffice.org to Xine, making it a viable desktop distribution powered by Xfce.

Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn

With much interest by the Linux community, yesterday Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn was released onto the Internet. While the final release of Ubuntu 7.04 hasn't changed much since the testing releases that we had covered quite extensively, we have posted some additional screenshots from this extremely popular Linux desktop distribution. Kubuntu, Xubuntu, and Edubuntu were also released yesterday but Ubuntu Studio is currently missing in action.

OLPC XO Test Build (Sugar Interface)

We've heard a lot about the OLPC (One Laptop Per Child) project, which aims to provide a $100 laptop for developing nations, and we've heard a bit about its Sugar interface and other technical abilities, but recently we spent the time with QEMU and a test build of the OLPC XO operating system (Fedora based) to see how it really shapes up.
