February 26, 2007 -- Fedora 7 Test 2 is being pushed out the door this Tuesday (February 27), but thanks to the excellence of Pungi we decided to run our own spin. New in Fedora 7 Test 2 is the artwork along with quite a few other changes that we commented on in our Fedora 7 Preview earlier this year. In this article we have some of the first screenshots from Fedora 7 Test 2. To say the least, Fedora 7 is shaping up extremely well!

February 23, 2007 -- With Ubuntu, Kubuntu, and Xubuntu each deploying a different desktop environment (GNOME, KDE, and Xfce respectively), how do each of these distributions compare performance-wise? We have taken two systems -- one with dual Intel Clovertown processors and the other an AMD Sempron -- and tested out each of these distributions in some of our commonly used Linux benchmarks to see how the performance truly stacks up. In this article we will be presenting part one of our results.

February 16, 2007 -- A new test (Herd) release is now available from the Ubuntu camp. This is the fourth testing release in the road to Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn this April. In today's screenshots we show off a few of the changes in this release along with the improved Ubuntu Hardware Database.

February 15, 2007 -- Since the death of Mandrake we have only used Mandriva Linux once or twice a year, but with the first beta now out for 2007.1 we decided to give it another go. New in Mandriva Linux 2007.1 is GNOME 2.17, Firefox 2.0, and much more. There are some pretty nifty features found inside Mandriva Linux 2007.1 Beta 1, and it does look as if it will be a hopeful year for this distribution.

February 12, 2007 -- SLAX is one of our favorite mini Linux LiveCD distributions so when SLAX 6.0.0 Pre 3 recently came out we couldn't help but to try out the new SLAX 6. New in this third pre-release of the SLAX 6.0 LiveCD is the Linux 2.6.20 kernel, bootable LiveUSB support in both Linux and Windows, udev replaces hotplug, full sound support with ALSA 1.0.14, NTFS read and write support, and more.

February 11, 2007 -- MCNLive Virtual City is out, which is a Linux distribution that can run on a 512MB USB flash drive or CD-ROM and supports virtualization through VirtualBox OSE and a whole lot more. It also supports desktop effects through Compiz with either AIGLX or XGL. This is an interesting little distribution worth checking out.

February 08, 2007 -- Ubuntu Feisty Fawn Herd 3 is now available for download. New in this third alpha release of 7.04 Feisty Fawn is GNOME 2.17.90 and numerous other updated packages. For Ubuntu fanatics this is certainly worth trying out.

February 01, 2007 -- Earlier this week Microsoft finally shipped its Vista "Longhorn" operating system, which has been receiving a fair amount of attention from traditional media sources. However, if Windows is not your thing Fedora 7 Test 1 is now out. Originally Fedora 7 Test 1 was scheduled for release on January 30, but a delay had pushed it back to today. Fortunately this two-day delay should not push back the April final release. Many of the features for Fedora 7 were covered in our Fedora 7: The Linux Knight in Shining Armor article. However, what we have to offer today is the first screenshots of Fedora 7 along with some of our very preliminary thoughts on the Fedora Desktop LiveCD.

February 01, 2007 -- A new release of Parallel Knoppix is out, which is a Knoppix-based distribution for cluster computing using LAM-MPI and MPICH. Among the updates in Parallel Knoppix 2.3 is updates against Debian unstable, computer nodes being able to boot using copies of the CD, and other improvements. Parallel Knoppix 2.3 is also the focus of today's screenshots at Phoronix.

January 26, 2007 -- Kurumin Linux is a distribution we had never heard of prior to today's encounter. The latest Kurumin release, Light 7.0, is a mini LiveCD that is targeted for Brazilian users and is based on Debian/Knoppix. This mini LiveCD is sized at 182MB while featuring the full KDE desktop along with plenty of extra software.
