The 7-Zip results are largely unchanged from this Intel Sandy Bridge system with six cores plus Hyper Threading.
When looking at these early Ubuntu 12.10 power consumption results for all of the tests combined, the average power consumption of the Core i7 3960X system was 119.7 Watts. This is an increase from Ubuntu 12.04 LTS that was at 110.9 Watts, but down from the 139.6 Watt average in Ubuntu 11.04 or the 124.7 Watt average in Ubuntu 11.10. At the same time though, as the performance-per-Watt graphs illustrated, the Ubuntu 12.10 performance is improved in several areas. Overall, there is no big upset for Intel systems on Ubuntu 12.10.
As the October release of Ubuntu 12.10 nears, plus new upstream Linux kernel releases and other packages emerge (and some unrelated power regressions explored), additional Linux power consumption results from multiple other systems will be provided.
